Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

Whoever he was, that guy was nuts.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

I see no possible difficulties whatsoever with this fool-proof plan.

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

After roe, women are no longer free.

Republicans don’t want a speaker to lead them; they want a hostage.

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Schmidt just says fuck it, opens a tea shop.

When do we start airlifting the women and children out of Texas?

No one could have predicted…

The next time the wall street journal editorial board speaks the truth will be the first.

Anyone who bans teaching American history has no right to shape America’s future.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Let’s give Pelosi the biggest majority we can. Give to the fifteen Democratic challengers running in districts that are listed as toss-ups. When we hit our goal here, I’ll move on to the ones in districts listed as Lean R.

Balloon Juice House Tier 1 (15 Republican held seats that are listed as toss-up)

    Thank you for this, Doug.

I went ahead and donated directly to Dr. Cameron Webb (Virginia’s 5th District; young black physician up against a God-botherer from Liberty U; the district’s GOP kicked the incumbent lunatic to the curb for insufficient conservatism).

Thank you DougJ! There are some excellent candidates in this group!

Several of these candidates are supported by EMILY’s List. To look them up easily, Google “[Name] Emily’s list”.

Ballotpedia is also a good source of information on candidates, although it sometimes has odd search algorithms.

I donated to Ammar Campa-Najjar, who’s running in CA-50 against the odious Daryl Issa. He almost won last time in a ruby-red district when his opponent got indicted. They’re running neck and neck now. It’s California, so we’ve got a good majority, but wondering if it’s worth putting up a thermometer for this race. Getting rid of Daryl Issa would be nice, and like Doug said, we can give Nancy a bigger margin.

Just kicked in a decent amount. Also going to suggest that folks watch this short video from the GOP leader in Kansas. She says very plainly that she has a plan to redistrict KS so that all four US House seats are GOP. It’s vile.

Juicers have been giving to Bollier. Keep it up, she’ll be needed to veto this crap. (I’m also giving to Michelle De La Isla, KS-02 candidate, even if she’s a bit of a long shot in an R+10 run. Fuck these Republicans!)

@RaflW: Oops. My bad. Bollier of course is running for Senate. KS will have to rely on Gov. Kelly to veto any tortured district maps.

@evap: I hope Doug will weigh in, but my view is that campaigns make plans based on projections of how the money will keep rolling in. If the funds don’t show, they may have to scale back, or take on late-cycle debt that sucks to fundraise for after an election.

Thank you! I was heartened to drive through Webb’s district a few weeks back (Virginia wine country and rolling hills, among other areas — Liberty U Lynchburg, too) and was heartened to see a lot of Webb signs. And then — Abigail Spanberger signs as I drove closer to home.

And — last week: the Eastern shore of Virginia, with Elaine Luria signs aplenty.

I just opened up a shiny new credit card with a big spending bonus on it, so that I can give a bunch of money to all the BJ thermometers, and as a good American capitalist get something back for it.

Here’s a question I have for DougJ and all you Juicers: of the BJ candidates, who, strategically, needs a little extra cash love? Like there are a bunch of Senate seats, and I’m gonna give to all of them, but who’s in a real close fight, or otherwise would benefit from extra consideration? And should I give more to the group thermometers, like this one?

@RaflW: This was brought up before. The real threat is the Republican super-majorities in the Kansas legislature that mean Republicans can override the governor’s veto. They need to pick up, I think, 4 seats to break the super-majority.

4 votes just to break the super-majority makes me kind of sick.

And I’m feeling the urge to post a PSA – guys, HUNKER the eff DOWN! The fall surge is upon us! Now is not the time to slacken off on pandemic safeguards. Double the guard! Work remotely if you can. Mask up constantly if you can’t. No restaurants, no bars, no movie theaters. Avoid your Republican friends and relatives. Stay ALIVE!

I saw an epidemiologist on TV the other day say the fall surge is here and we could be in the midst of the explosion of new infections right now and we wouldn’t know it for two weeks.

Oh, but be sure to get your early vote in, in person (masks, masks!) or by mail. Since the GOP has decided that in person voting on election day is Republican Virtue Signaling on par with going maskless, the way we win this election is simply outliving the bastards.

    @raven: More learning for me!

    From Wikipedia

In 1969, Lennear dated Mick Jagger when Ike & Tina Turner were the opening act for the Rolling Stones on their American tour. Lennear’s relationships with Mick Jagger and David Bowie are often cited as inspiration for The Rolling Stones‘ “Brown Sugar” (1971) and Bowie’s “Lady Grinning Soul” (1973).[15][16][17] NME editors Roy Carrand Charles Shaar Murray noted in 1981 that she was “yet to reply in song to either Mick or David.”[15] However, in a 1973 article in Rolling Stone, she was quoted as saying that she wrote the song “Not At All” “to inform Mick Jagger of his dispensability”.

I love the “to inform Mick Jagger of his dispensability” quote!

My neighbor is quarantining.  Took her and her boyfriend donuts this morning.  And I am out and about in a mask, always, on limited errands.

Did not have extended contact with neighbor, but a few moments here and there, outside mostly, but sometimes within 4 feet or so of each other.  Maskless.  In front of our homes.   SO:  I take that COVID contact seriously.   I appreciate tremendously that she warned me.
