Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

In my day, never was longer.

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

Republicans seem to think life begins at the candlelight dinner the night before.

The arc of the moral universe does not bend itself. it is up to us to bend it.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Polls are now a reliable indicator of what corporate Republicans want us to think.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

Optimism opens the door to great things.

Second rate reporter says what?

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Following reporting rules is only for the little people, apparently.

My right to basic bodily autonomy is not on the table. that’s the new deal.

Stand up, dammit!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

Within six months Twitter will be fully self-driving.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

This must be what justice looks like, not vengeful, just peaceful exuberance.

Late Night Open Thread: Not An Election Season for the Childish

alternate take; even children know not to take the Libertarian Party seriously https://t.co/FtesEGhsQ2

— James Palmer (@BeijingPalmer) October 26, 2020

… or the perpetually adolescent.

To quote John Rogers:

“There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.”

What a clusterf..k –  just a very small example of what happens to anyone who depends on Donald J Trump.

After jumping into Air Force One and departing the state, many of the attendees, some of whom waited more than four hours to listen to him speak, stood in the freezing temperatures on a private road in the middle of the airport. …..

police officers located two groups of elderly Trump supporters shortly after the event ended who were struggling in the cold. One group was reportedly frozen in the cold and unable to move.

Queue to park, queue to get a bus, queue to get to the rally. It is a cult, a dangerous idiotic cult that exists to make dear leader feel good.

I put a couple of OmahaScanners tweets in the last thread. The traffic was all snarled up; a team of police officers was completely overwhelmed and called for help. However, the new set of police was on a different channel so couldn’t talk over the radio and were run off by the original group. One ambulance called in a possible victim of hypothermia but couldn’t say his temperature because their thermometer was broken.

The Omaha story reminded me of some reporting here about low paid trump campaign workers in Iowa who were treated like shit by the top state campaign officials. I thought at the time, I bet those officials are making a pile of money.    The trump campaign was a gravy train. After the train wrecks, when the blame shifting starts, a lot of stories are going to come out, and they won’t be pretty. Some people will be anonymous sources, because of non-disclosure agreements. But if the campaign is broke, who is going to enforce those NDAs anyway?
