There have been two, or possibly three, things going on lately with the Balloon Juice site.
If you don’t care about the details, know that I am working with the developers to resolve the issues. You can jump to the bottom and watch the Bob Bauer video. Bob Bauer heads Biden’s vote protection effort. After that you can click the link to listen to Letitia James (the New York AG) message to voters. You won’t regret it.

Details about the site for anyone who is interested:
The custom twitter feed plugin that automatically posts new threads in John’s twitter feed lost its mind – on or about the night of the last debate. We turned off that plugin, and the site was back to normal. We left it turned off for a few days, then turned it on again at some point that weekend. It misbehaved some more, so we turned it off again.
That’s why you don’t see John’s twitter feed in the sidebar.
I opened a ticket with the plugin developer. We will need to turn the plugin back on so they can (hopefully) catch it in the act so they can see what’s gong on. I’ll let you know when that happens so you won’t have to wonder what’s going on. I worked with them on another issue with the twitter feed plugin last December, and they were helpful then, so I have high hopes.
?
The WordPress search plugin is also acting out. I worked with our site developer on Thursday, and with their monitoring software, he was able to figure out the query in the search plugin that is causing the problem. While we were on the phone, he contacted the developer for that plugin (nice that our site developer knows him personally). The second thing the plugin developer said was “that’s a lot of comments!” I laughed. (We are at 5.9 million comments on BJ.)
The good news on that front is that developer has already looked at the problem and written some new code to fix it.
Our site developer has the new code and will be installing it and rebuilding the site index so we can see if the problem has been resolved. That should happen this weekend, or possibly on Monday.
?
Election Night
Election Night on Balloon Juice is gonna give the site a workout, so I want to share the plan for that night.
Plan A: The custom twitter feed developers fix the bug in the twitter feed plugin and the WordPress search plugin people fix their respective bugs before Tuesday, and the site stops having the slowdown issue..
Plan B: If both bugs are not fixed by Tuesday, then the offending plugin(s) will be turned off for Nov 3 and as long as the election craziness lasts. Or until the bug is fixed.
I also plan to ask our site developer to keep a special eye on the site on Tuesday night, though we obviously can’t expect him to be up all night.
?
The third thing that’s going on with the site appears to primarily affect iPads. Other tablets are possibly affected as well, but the only devices I am aware of so far are iPads. The problem with impossibly slow loading of the front page appears to be related to twitter, but we don’t know if that’s the cause or a symptom. My strong suspicion is that the WordPress search plugin issue is affecting iPads, particularly older iPads, more than other devices.
My plan is to give the Search plugin people a chance to fix their bug and then see if the iPad issue is also resolved. If the iPad issue remains after that, then I’d like to work with a few iPad peeps to do some testing to see if we can narrow down the issue. So if you’re an iPad person and you’re willing to be part of that testing, please let me know in the comments.

I got a new iPad mini a month or so ago and was shocked at how quickly everything, including tweets, loads. Doubt that’s of much help, but there it is.

If you all had one of Hunter Biden’s laptops (as I do) you’d be fine. :-D

A Headline over at Raw Story just now:
The real purpose (he would have had it there covid rules or no) is to declare victory for president while actually being president in the White House with hundreds of official looking people in attendance. Step one to overturn the election. I hope Joe wins by a huge amount.

the Bauer interview was taped ten+ days ago. I wonder what he has to say about what happened yesterday in TX? I am seeing a couple of reports that the FBI is looking into it. But that truck parade has been harassing people in that area for awhile now and the local PD and mayor aren’t either on their side or too afraid to confront them. The truck parade boasts they are ‘protected’ by local militia. Media of course are playing ‘what about antifa’ games with their coverage?
Fair Economist
Obviously you can’t fix it with all this going on but I would really like to see the ability to quotepost comments to Twitter. Every way I’ve tried only displays a header for the post.
RaflW
@patrick II: Alternatively, he knows that a national 10 point lead by Biden means that the popular vote will be embarrassingly lopsided, and that even as he will no doubt challenge PA and a couple other states, he does not want to be attempting a big ass party at his D.C. hotel, only to have maybe 200 paid staffers as the only ‘guests’, looking very glum and dejected, while a DJ spins YMCA endlessly.
Yutsano
@patrick II:
Okay stop that. He can’t overturn the election vy starting with a declaration. And let’s say there’s enough machinations to overturn, say, Pennsylvania. Biden has many more paths to victory. And his operation isn’t smart or well funded enough to overturn every electoral vote everywhere he would need to. He’s going to lose, and it’s not going to be close. Look at the number of new voters coming in. I watched an interview with Ben Wikler, and he said the huge number of new voters are skewing younger and not white. We might need a bigger word than tsunami, because we might not be ready for what’s about to happen/
Calouste
The Republicans attempt to suppress 100,000+ drive-in votes in Houston has been thrown out by the Texas Supreme Court without comment. Of course there is still a case in a federal court, but it’s a start. I get the impression that there are still some Republicans in Texas that want a functioning state. There was also a GOP state Rep that thought this was ridiculous.
Baud
Baud!? 2036!?
WaterGirl
@Fair Economist:
I don’t understand what you mean by that. Are you saying you would like to be able to take, let’s say Kay’s comment at #10 and post that on twitter?
Yutsano
@Baud: Where’s the interrobang? I thought there was going to be an earth-shattering interrobang?
JanieM
Two things:
— 5.9 million comments just made me laugh. That’s amazing, although not surprising when I think about how prolific the place is. Do any of you really keep up with every thread? I mean comments and front-pagers, either one.
— Thanks to WaterGirl for dealing with all the technical stuff. I mean, thanks to all the people who keep the place going, but the technical side is surely endless, and often a headache. Hopefully it’s fun sometimes too. (Also thanks to WaterGirl for the respite threads lately…the photo threads in particular are saving my sanity.)
Calouste
@RaflW: It would also be embarrassing that when a coked up Don Jr starts a fight with whoever the heck the current campaign manager is after he accused him of losing the election, for that to happen in a public venue in front of the TV cameras.

@Calouste: It’s going to a Dolt45 judge then to the 5th Circuit. The decision might not make to the Supreme Court since they’ll just say this was already decided, lower court ruling stand, blah blah blah. So the Fifth might be the killing blow, especially if that decision comes after the election and those voters have no remedy at that time. Which is what the Republicans are hoping for here.

I worked in IT too long to complain about much of anything, unless it is really creating problems for me. My ISP has so many problems I would hesitate to say any slowing is the fault of the site anyway.
Just a comment – the only thing that is noticeably slow for me (android phone and windows 10 slightly aging computer) are posts with lots of twitter imbeds. The post and the frames (and any plaintext) come up immediately, followed by the formatted tweet and finally any photos. This is the case for any page with a lot of tweets, and sometimes even if there is only one tweet with pictures. Even at its worst, I don’t recall having to look at the modem to see if the connection has dropped, so it is still close to sub-second response time. If I had to guess, I would put site issues at the bottom of the list of possible reasons for the slow response.
You guys all do great work. Thank you.

Only quirk I have on Android tablet or phone is dropdown ads obscure the navigation arrows, using either the mobile or desktop views, at least two browsers (Chrome and Samsung).
Load time and functionality seem fine.
WaterGirl
@Sloane Ranger: In WordPress, you can think of “Plugins” as mini programs that each handle a particular function. And they are all written/programmed by different companies.
There’s one to handle spam, there’s one to handle editing, there’s one to handle moderation of comments (approving, deleting, etc), there’s one to automatically add a post to John’s twitter feed, etc.
Two of the ones we are using started to misbehave and slow down the site.

NotMax
@trollhattan
I don’t want to make a big thing about it nor to dwell on it but will replicate it here this one time. The list which follows as typed for entry here is single spaced. If all five items in the list below show up single spaced for you, great. They don’t display that way for me. Again, only happens here, and only cropped up with the latest site rebuild.
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Ken
@WaterGirl: I see an extra space between 4 and 5. Firefox on Windows.
Are you using text mode and adding <br> at each line? That’s where I’ve seen this before, when trying to put in a poem and breaking the lines.
Same with NotMax at 63.
The HTML for NotMax’s list is:
<div class=”comment-content“>
<p>@<a href=…>…</a></p>
<p>I don’t ….</p>
<p>One<br />
Two<br />
Three<br />
Four<br />
Five</p>
</div>
When I paste that into an HTML document it doesn’t have the extra line, so I assume it’s something with the CSS for one of the containing elements.

My setup is basically stone knives and bearskins – rendering moot the majority of the problems being found and addressed – so this is just a thank-you note to WaterGirl for all you contribute toward the smooth running of this site!
WaterGirl
@dmsilev: I see what you’re saying, but when the problem happens, it’s really obvious. The site slows to a crawl and you can hear the sound of
whalingwailing and gnashing of teeth.So I think it’s safe to try it tomorrow (Monday). It’s easy enough to turn off the plugin if we need to on Tuesday. But I’m hoping the code change fixes it, and I really appreciate their quick response.

But yeah, I’m not gonna do any testing related to the iPad issue before the election. But I would like the other plugin to be functioning, so that’s worth doing before.
I’ll let everyone know when the new code is in place, with the new index, and we’ll see how the site works for computers, phones, etc.
As a bonus, it will be really obvious whether it helps with iPads or not.

@Calouste:
They know that voter backlash is real and there will be a price to be paid. As I was saying earlier, the feds cannot invalidate the votes for state and local races. They have no jurisdiction – and that means all those local GOP pols pushing for it are going to eat it in the shorts.

Hoping someone here will know!
WaterGirl
@cain: No, it’s worse than that! With the 100k votes in Texas, the ruling suggests that they might invalidate ONLY the federal races and not the rest.
Which, if it didn’t stink to high heaven before, will surely reek.

Watergirl, thanks for keeping this sanctuary of jackals running : )
I just got back from Publix. I live in a very red Florida county northwest of Tampa. I happily, proudly wore my Biden Harris shirt. I saw one person wearing a Trump shirt. I wanted to ask him in a friendly way: WTF? but I doubted my ability to sustain authentic friendliness. Three people said they liked my shirt. A fourth person had on a Biden Harris mask. We mutually complimented each other’s political garb. I hardly go anywhere now, so it was particularly nice to see allies.
Ken
Only for the next two months.
@WaterGirl: Twitter and Facebook are on top of the Flash end-of-life so their embeds should still work. We might lose some third-party ads, boo hoo.
Also end-of-life doesn’t mean the plugins stop working or the servers stop delivering flash files. I think I read that Microsoft will be disabling the Flash plugin in IE and Edge, but don’t recall anything about Firefox or Chrome. I need to read up on that. There may be some annoying inconsistencies as it gradually disappears.

I’d be happy to help test the “slow loading with iPads” issue. My wife’s and my iPads are NOT old (purchased new 2019), and BJ is nearly unusable (actually, when it is at its worst, it IS unusable…>30 sec to load MOST of the front page…post titles + twitter text, with images from Twitter either coming along later or not at all)
Also, although it isn’t as bad, slow loading is also an issue with our iPhones…

I thought BJ moved away from FYWP. FY2020!

Opera has a new browser out which is available for iPad or iPhone – “Opera Touch web browser” in the App Store.
Haven’t tried it, I use Android, but their regular browsers are great and have built in ad blocking.
WaterGirl
@Fair Economist: I am not a twitter user, so when we were working on the site, at first I asked for what you are asking for, but then I checked with the person who had said they wanted to be able to link to twitter, and they said they only wanted to be able to tweet the link to the whole post.
So we almost had that, but then we didn’t.
If we ever pay for a set of changes, maybe that can be on it.

I generally read BJ on an iPad Air 2. The site has been loading slowly but I’d wait several seconds and it would usually show up in stages, photos last. John’s Twitter feed disappeared several days ago—I’ve been thinking of inquiring where it went because I miss it.
I’m happy to help if I can but I’m not very tech savvy.
WaterGirl
@dexwood: Mine actually kind of know “It’s too early” but their tummies were speaking up loud and clear tonight.
WaterGirl
@Madeleine: The answer to the mystery of John’s tweets being missing is up top. That is one of the two plugins that have been misbehaving, so it’s turned off right now.

@WaterGirl: Firefox on Android also has spaces The site runs differently between a Galaxy Note10 and a Galaxy S10. Both running Firefox. Been crashing on the S10. makes no sense at all.
WaterGirl
@Feathers: @Madeleine:
I’ve added both of you to the list of testers. When we get to that point. thanks.
Ruckus
I listened to the Letitia James interview.
I like her, and I like what she says.
WaterGirl
@Ruckus: Me, too. I came away thinking that the AGs are all planning and strategizing together and that individual states are not on their own. I found it reassuring.
frosty
@JanieM: Do any of you really keep up with every day thread?
Raises hand. Posts and all comments. It costs me about 4+ hours a day. We are a prolific bunch.
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: My YES and NO was if the browser works. Only Chrome is working.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Then poke around in Firefox and look for something that is related to social media. I don’t use Firefox so I can’t give you directions for exactly what to look for, but I have given these vague directions several times in the past and people tell me they found the setting and now it worked the way they wanted.
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: If I disable DuckDuckGo’s privacy protection for the site, tweets load properly. Interesting.

@smedley the uncertain:
Your nexus 7 actually works? I have terrible luck with these things.
Fair Economist
@Another Scott: A link to the comment works fine for an HTML link, but on twitter it shows a splash of Tunch and the headline for the article. I think it works on clickthru, but that’s not the point of Twitter.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Great!
If it would only take a minute, you could write up where to find that setting in DuckDuckGo? I could start a collection for the various browser so I would be able to do better than say “poke around for the setting related to social media…”.
You know, now that you say “privacy setting”, i think maybe that’s what someone mentioned about Firefox. It was many months ago so I may be remembering wrong, but that definitely rings a bell.

ObOpenThread??
(An hour-by-hour prediction of state results. The thread is still being updated as I post this.)
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: I keep seeing ObOpen Thread and I don’t know what that means.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: So this is his preview of what he expects to see on Tuesday night?

I try to at least scan every thread, esp On the Road for the beauty and variety.
Some days when I go to town it doesn’t happen. Most days I stay home to avoid the Trump Plague. Those days I catch it all, the whole Balloon Juice day.
Gvg
I have been having an issue with links in people’s posts to twitter for about a month. It would say something went wrong and have blank twitter. About 2 weeks ago I discovered if I tried again the same link would work fine. I assumed it was twitter changing something and didn’t mention it here. I think I had it happen somewhere else too but now I’m not sure. I don’t really like twitter, so I didn’t care enough to wonder much.
the second time works every time. Now that I mention it, it does seem kind of odd.
Another Scott
@Another Scott:
Ouch! :-)
Cheers,

@WaterGirl: Ob = Obligatory :-) To muddy the thread.
(It’s off-topic here, but I don’t see any other recent Open Threads.)
Cheers,
Scott.

@WaterGirl: Yes! He’s doing a great service to us junkies, letting us know how to pace ourselves before we can rest knowing that Joe and Kamala actually have won.
Cheers,
Scott.
WaterGirl
@Gvg: Yeah, that is a twitter thing not a BJ thing.
It works best if you refresh the page with the error message as opposed to hitting the try again button. Page refresh works for me every time with that twitter error message.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: I originally marked this Open Thread up top, so you are all good. Not that it wouldn’t have been fine anyway.
The Lodger
@Gvg: Exact same thing has been happening to me 90% of the time. Also I am getting raw HTML code at the start of my reply. Looks good when I publish it though. ETA: I fix it the way WaterGirl @148 said. It’s very reliable.
WaterGirl
@The Lodger: What you are describing with HTML code at the start of your reply is on twitter, right, not on BJ?
The Lodger
@WaterGirl: Nope, it’s BJ. It doesn’t happen all the time, but I can’t escape it with some comments.
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl: In the DuckDuckGo browser (phone only), click on the menu button (three dots, upper right), select Disable Privacy Protection.
This apparently whitelists everything on the website you’re looking at, because now I get all the ads, but Twitter embeds load correctly. :)
WaterGirl
@The Lodger: Can you get me a screen capture next time that happens?
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: I don’t use DuckDuckGo, eems like you should be able to enable social media without whitelisting for ads.
