Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

They were going to turn on one another at some point. It was inevitable.

The words do not have to be perfect.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

I’d like to think you all would remain faithful to me if i ever tried to have some of you killed.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

rich, arrogant assholes who equate luck with genius

Petty moves from a petty man.

There are no moderate republicans – only extremists and cowards.

Let the trolls come, and then ignore them. that’s the worst thing you can do to a troll.

This isn’t Democrats spending madly. This is government catching up.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

In my day, never was longer.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Wait, what?

“Alexa, change the president.”

You don’t get rid of your umbrella while it’s still raining.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Cancel the cowardly Times and Post and set up an equivalent monthly donation to ProPublica.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

We know you aren’t a Democrat but since you seem confused let me help you.

Speaking of republicans, is there a way for a political party to declare intellectual bankruptcy?

Speaking of Pet Photos (Open Thread)

This post is in: Open Threads

As promised, here’s a photo of Badger in his winter wear:

Speaking of Pet Photos (Open Thread)

It’s 43 degrees F right now, which is sweater weather for the Boston-by-way-of-Miramar terrier. I posted a similar pic on Twitter with the following caption: “I am Badger La Boeuf McMurtry, humiliated descendent of wolves, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.”

But the truth is, he seems okay with the sweater since it’s cold. Before I let him outside, I asked him to sit, which he did, and he did not try to wriggle away as I put the sweater on him. Our old Daisy seems disgusted by the whole thing. There’s no way she’d sit still for a sweater! But she’s got a layer of blubber that her younger companion lacks.

In political news, the madman whose lease on the White House is expiring in 50 days retweeted notable election expert “@catturd2” on Twitter. Multiple times.

Speaking of Pet Photos (Open Thread) 1

I look forward to having a president who doesn’t retweet Twitter accounts named after turds (and isn’t himself a gross, stinky lump of feces). Just 50 days. We can make it, right?

2021 Pets of Balloon Juice: Calendar A

by WaterGirl|  December 1, 20208:52 am| 76 Comments

This post is in: Pet Calendar

Good morning!

Here’s a preview of the 2021 Pets of Balloon Juice Calendar A.  Please check for your pets and make sure that all your pets are there, that the names are right, that we have the right name with the right pet, etc.

If you asked for a heart or a rainbow for a pet who is no longer with us, please check for that, too.  We may end up with all hearts.  We are using hearts and not rainbows, so I hope that isn’t too much of a disappointment for anyone.

You can check the links in the sidebar to see the month your pets are in.

Click on each image and then use Ctrl+ to enlarge so you can read everything.  Then hit the back arrow to go back to the post.

We plan to have Calendar B ready for review later today.

These are really low-resolution for posting on the blog, but the calendar itself is very high resolution.

Trigger warning:  (beautiful) snake in October

On The Road – way2blue – Cyclades

way2blue

Given the ongoing sabotage of our democratic system, I wanted to honor the ‘cradle of democracy’ with a short series of photos from a couple visits to islands in the Cyclades, the first series from 2012.  With Greece struggling with severe recession woes that year, we decided to dump a few tourist €€ into their economy.  We headed to the islands, with a Greek friend giving us tips on which islands were her favorites…

OIA, SANTORINI

First stop was Santorini (Thera) where we stayed in a cave house in Oia, the picturesque village perched on the cliffs in northernmost Santorini.  A real splurge.  Our terrace looked across the caldera.  The village filled with tourists from cruise ships during the day, but they mostly disappeared by the late afternoon.  A long, steep path led to a seafood restaurant on the water’s edge of Ammoudi Bay where we could watch the sunset.  With donkeys for those who didn’t want to trek back up on foot.

Late Night Open Thread: BeBestest Xmas

Is it just me or has Melania’s taste lightened dramatically now that she knows she gets to leave the White House for good soon? https://t.co/6HvmbRfCaJ

— The Hoarse Whisperer (@TheRealHoarse) November 30, 2020

The Horse is not wrong! Melania’s Christmas tableaus have always been strongly reminiscent of those at an upscale Midwestern mall. This year, now that she knows she’ll never have to do another one of these excruciating walk-throughs, it’s a mid-range Midwestern mall. (Perhaps she was told she could keep any funds left over from the ‘decorations appeal’.) And yet, it’s a more cheerful production than the others, even if it took someone raised outside the American and/or ‘Christian’ holiday tradition to appreciate it…
