Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I was confident that someone would point it out and thought why not me.

Books are my comfort food!

“Let’s not pretend [Trump] wants to engage in high-minded discourse.”

Consistently wrong since 2002

Wow, you are pre-disappointed. How surprising.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

Republicans can’t even be trusted with their own money.

Proof that we need a blogger ethics panel.

The Supreme Court is corrupt. Democrats must win in November and force court reform.

Roe isn’t about choice, it’s about freedom.

If marriage is the equivalent of selling yourself into slavery, women with self respect should reject the offer.

Michigan is a great lesson for Dems everywhere: when you have power…use it!

Too often we hand the biggest microphones to the cynics and the critics who delight in declaring failure.

I know this must be bad for Joe Biden, I just don’t know how.

I did not have this on my fuck 2022 bingo card.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

I’m pretty sure there’s only one Jack Smith.

Battle won, war still ongoing.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

Can we lighten up on the doomsday scenarios?

The current Supreme Court is a rogue court. Very dangerous.

The gop couldn’t organize an orgy in a whorehouse with a fist full of 50s.

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Christmas Day Theology Open Thread: To Mike Pence & His Fellow ‘Christians’

You can believe that ‘making rich people poorer, and poor people more comfortable’ is a bad thing, or you can believe in the Jesus of the Christian Bible. It’s spelled out in your sacred text, not once but many times! Don’t just wave that Book around — read it!

Merry Christmas From Outer Space

No, I’m not in outer space, or even the stratosphere**. I am in fact in NYC with Samwise* and my husband. But we don’t all have that luxury–poor Santa has to deliver presents around the whole galaxy, if not all of spacetime. I have photographic proof:

Merry Christmas From Outer Space

I found this in a nice collection of these old Galaxy covers. It looks like Santa’s managed to relax in at least one of them. Go check it out, if it suits you; regardless, a merry Christmas to all! I’ll be doing my traditional eating of leftovers and viewing of Futurama. I especially love The Futurama Holiday Spectacular, the anthology episode featuring X-Mas, Robanukah, and Kwanzaa.

What about you?

*Speaking of Samwise…

Samwise—a real good boy for tolerating this—wishes you a merry Christmas! pic.twitter.com/lJfllP9B5Y

So This Is Christmas

This morning, this beautiful quilt arrived in my inbox from kattails:

Well This Is Christmas

The Christmas quilt I finally finished a couple of weeks ago.  The piecing was done by at least four different women, there are four names in the seam allowances on back.  Two were dated: 1989 and 1997.  I “inherited” the quilt top when a neighbor’s mother passed away, lots of stuff given away.  The top had been put together.

Quilters will notice quite a bit of “fussy cutting”  where a specific section of a printed pattern was carefully cut to repeat within the star. I’m NOT a quilter, but my own Mom just goes nuts decorating.

This year I finally put the batting and backing together, tied it, and sent it off.  Same fabric passed around for years, used in such different ways. I suspect they ran out of the dominant green border at the very end, because the upper right star contains a more recent fabric. The front: (it’s lap size, about 50 x 65”)

Well This Is Christmas 1

A closeup of the back of one of the most intricate squares, the feather star, center right in the first photo.

Going to be a quiet day here. Holiday movies, standing rib roast, writing Christmas cards, and hopefully staying offline most of the day. I’ll be so glad to see the backend of 2020….as I’m sure you all are.

Here’s a cute duck photo for you. It’s been too cold to fill their big pool, though I manage to fill the small one, but Maddie seems to prefer her water dish. Silly duck.

Well This Is Christmas 2

What are y’all up to?

On The Road - Albatrossity - New Zealand - #5 9
Okarito LagoonJanuary 1, 2016

The White Heron (Ardea modesta, kotuku) is considered by some authorities to be a subspecies of the cosmopolitan Great Egret (A. alba), but New Zealand ornithologists are notorious “splitters” and have given it species status. And there are some morphological and behavioral differences to support that decision. They are a critically endangered species in New Zealand, with one known breeding site (approximately 30 pairs of birds) in the Okarito lagoon. After the breeding season they disperse widely across the country, but since there are less than 200 of these birds in the entire population, your best bet for seeing one is to go to Okarito and take a leisurely boat tour of the lagoon.
