Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Seems like a complicated subject, have you tried yelling at it?

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

Hot air and ill-informed banter

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

My years-long effort to drive family and friends away has really paid off this year.

We’ll be taking my thoughts and prayers to the ballot box.

I’m sure you banged some questionable people yourself.

The truth is, these are not very bright guys, and things got out of hand.

The willow is too close to the house.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

The words do not have to be perfect.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Conservatism: there are some people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Let us savor the impending downfall of lawless scoundrels who richly deserve the trouble barreling their way.

Innocent people don’t delay justice.

Joe Lieberman disappointingly reemerged to remind us that he’s still alive.

Let’s not be the monsters we hate.

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

A lot of Dems talk about what the media tells them to talk about. Not helpful.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Late Night Open Thread: Running for Our Lives

There's an actual story here about how rural white republicans are literally terrorizing their neighbors, but it's completely obscured by the weird framing about a "toxic brand" and "ignoring their concerns" that makes it sound like it's Dems' faulthttps://t.co/EJfOY53YOe

— Hemry, Local Bartender (@BartenderHemry) February 17, 2022

‘All our best and brightest young people are moving away to the Godless cities’
has been a village complaint ever since there have been cities, but the GOP Death Cultists and their Media Village Idiot enablers have done an amazing job at marketing the resentment for their own toxic ends…

You know something has gone very wrong in your reporting when your local color is anecdotes of democrats being terrorized and yet the tone of your piece is "why did democrats make republicans do this" pic.twitter.com/KT97vfwa3D

— Hemry, Local Bartender (@BartenderHemry) February 17, 2022

I’d love for even one reporter to do a big feature on why the types of people who vote Democratic are fleeing conservative rural areas en masse, but since there’s no way to write that piece without placing the blame squarely on conservatism it’ll never get written https://t.co/jLBSPhyqsB

— seinfeld empath (@NickTagliaferro) February 17, 2022

It does doesn’t it? But if you actually name the reasons why (bigotry and intimidation) then right-wingers might feel bad and that’s not fair or balanced!!!!

— Jennifer Boeder (@jenniferboeder) February 17, 2022

One side hates masks the other doesn't want broken glass tearing up their arm as it goes into their mailbox. Confused why either are moving lol.

Things are even uglier than during the Trump years. A neighbor casually referred to masks as child abuse while standing a few feet away from my masked child and pretending to be talking in the abstract about other people.

Also, since this is an open thread I’m curious what the BJ legal beagles think of this

    https://thehill.com/regulation/court-battles/594960-judge-rules-trump-must-face-civil-suits-over-jan-6

I assume SCOTUS will come in to fuck up the concept of equal justice under the law in a hilariously public way, but until then what’s the thought?

Wise decision. This has been a LONG time coming.

I remember telling ABL and Elon James White a million years ago during a TWIB podcast that this is who they are, this is who they have ALWAYS been, and that everyone was going to eventually have to make a choice. I will admit that I didn’t see things accelerating to this degree this quickly, but we were always going to wind up here.

Either white supremacy dies, or the republic does. It is really that simple.

I have “corporate” approval to not rent to the maskholes.

Pointed out to store mgmt that if they can’t master basic safety gear like a mask ( properly worn) in a pandemic, I can’t rent them a wood chipper, because they will try to sue our asses off when they lose a child or an arm.

Mgmt took it to Corporate, Corporate took it to the lawyers, lawyers said Yurp.

I’m considering mods for Cherry and Olympia: a roller bridge for Cherry, roller saddles and string tree for Olympia. Roller saddles and string tree on a Strat help with tuning stability, I have found. A roller saddle for a Gibson-style guitar is more of a comfort issue: I hate how the sharp knife-edged saddles on the stock Tune-o-Matic bridge dig into my hand.

NPR had a piece about political sorting. A socal conservative moved outside Dallas because she disliked masks and covid protocols. A liberal from outside Indianapolis moved to Austin because someone put glass in her mailbox.

I heard that NPR piece. It was right after the piece that set up Biden to take the blame for Putin’s actions if he invades and avoid giving him any credit if Putin retreats. It also more or less said that we have to wait until the whole thing plays out to determine whether Biden is showing leadership in the US response.

These are the types of framing that make me decide not to donate. Guessing they’ll be ok since Koch is a large contributor.

That’s interesting. I never had a problem like that with my right hand until I bought a PRS. My hand hits the pickup ring corner, and I’ve never had that problem on other guitars with the same type of pickup rings. I’ve modified my hand position a bit, but I’m thinking about filing down that corner to round it out (carefully, of course).

ETA: The reason it only happens on the PRS is that the ring is taller. Not something I had ever thought about or been looking out for before. I’m apparently alone in this because I posted a message on one of the gear boards and most didn’t understand what I was talking about.

If the Republic goes down, it won’t be solely the fault of the right-wing fanatics; it’ll be largely down to those who chose to believe they could pick and choose the few things they wanted from the GOP and not suffer the  consequences of the inferno that the party enabled .
