Ukraine soldier from Snake Island who defied Russia and refused to surrender received a medal.
h/t to Torrey for alerting me.
I know this is the Daily Mail, but the USA Today video was filled with cheesy music and this one is more complete, and it has subtitles. The person giving the medal mentions torture, which is what I feared. I don’t care who Ukraine traded them for. These soldiers have returned home, for which I am truly grateful.
Russian Warship, Go Fuck Yourself, indeed.

FDR said it: To some generations, much is given. Of other generations much is expected. This generation has a rendezvous with destiny.
Uncle Cosmo
While the Trumpistas were having a parlez-vous with density. Manifest density.
Geminid
@Uncle Cosmo: Hey, Uncle Cosmo! I’ve been wondering if your neighbors who had that bad house fire ever moved back in. You said there were challenges.
debbie
I’m glad for the very public recognition of this man’s bravery and courage. Frankly, every citizen of Ukraine should be honored similarly. That is one very impressive population.
Ohio Mom
Such a low keyed, subdued moment — war is serious stuff and they don’t pretend otherwise.
Baud
I would like to get a medal for cursing.
NotMax
Caught it when it aired on O’Donnell’s program on Tuesday.
WaterGirl
Would it be wrong for there to be a coin with his face on it, that says “Russian Warship, Go Fuck Yourself” as the equivalent as our “In God We Trust”?

Jen’s great, but her stand-in is no slouch:

@WaterGirl:
There’s a stamp commemorating the moment. Does that count?
Howard Beale IV
My local Sinclair TV station is pushing that Hunter Biden could face indictment.
WaterGirl
@Old School: Well, it might. If they hadn’t picked one of my least favorites of the artwork that was submitted for the stamp! I really was not crazy about the one they picked
But major kudos for making the stamp with that on it! And for having the contest in the middle of the war. Just one more way in which Ukraine has told Putin to fuck off.

The Chernobyl exclusion zone maybe not a great supply and staging area?

Admit to not correctly guessing how the first TikTok war would present itself. Russia’s own goal here is a product of their throttling social media. That and I suppose the lack of results to brag about.
Also wonder if we’re seeing the beginning of the end of the front-line battle tank, dreadnought of the land. They seem too easily taken out with weapons costing less than one percent of their cost to build. A broke Russia won’t be replacing the hundreds(more?) already lost and NATO are busy flooding Ukraine with more antitank weapons, daily.
Emma from Miami
@Kelly: Sweet Jesus. I keep thinking about all the kids that were taken from their military schools and told they were going off on a training exercise… There is no forgiveness for Putin, in this world or the next.

@Kelly: From the sounds of it, most of those kids playing soldier were not around when reactor 4 went boom. Wonder if they even knew what had happened there.
Uncle Cosmo
@Geminid: Work ongoing. I hear from the son who lived there from time to time & he hasn’t mentioned a target date. Windows still boarded up – I suspect we’ll know they’re close when the boards come down & they start replacing them. But thanks for asking!
(ETA: I expect they’ll fully renovate and reoccupy it soon. These are brick row houses of 1930s vintage, with 16″ party walls, solid as rocks. Since we never actually saw flames shooting out of the place, it should be fully recoverable.)
Geminid
@Uncle Cosmo: Thanks for the report. I’m glad they may move back in. It sounds like they had lived there a while. That would be a tough way to lose a familiar home.
Ohio Mom
@Howard Beale IV: Apparently the Hunter Biden story is all over the Washington Post. That’s the (on-line) paper Ohio Dad reads and he is a bit pissed about it.
sanjeevs
@Ohio Mom: CNN had it too
Federal investigation of Hunter Biden heats up – CNNPolitics
They’re raising questions about FARA and tax and some weapons violation.
Sounds like a fishing expedition based on this story.
Martin
@trollhattan: I think the US concluded that a while ago, which is why our tanks have wings and go 1000 MPH.
But the US military isn’t designed for occupation, it’s designed to repel occupiers. The Russian military is designed for occupation. I wouldn’t expect them to change.

i’d swear joy ann reid is high tonight! or at least she was last segment.
i did a google search to see how she spelled “ann” and mistyped. Google guessed my intent when i typed joy abb reud .
Doc Sardonic
Keep in mind that the United States Attorney for the Delaware district is a Trump appointee that Biden did not Shitcan on day 1 because the investigation predated his election and inauguration. This was done to avoid the look of a politically motivated shutdown of the investigation .

@sanjeevs:
That article is some But Her Emails shit, hardcore. ‘Okay, there’s no evidence, but what if he violated this law?????’
Uncle Cosmo
@Howard Beale IV: You give any credibility to anything Stinklair spews?
WaterGirl
@Doc Sardonic: fixed the first one, approved it, and deleted the second one.
Doc Sardonic
@WaterGirl: Thank You
Baud
@Doc Sardonic:
Ah, so the investigation can never end.
Uncle Cosmo
@Geminid: They were the first neighbors I met when I took ownership of my home at Thanksgiving 1987. We go back aways.

@Baud:
That seems to be the case. The NYT article on this, that I assume launched the rest of these articles, said the investigation has completely given up on criminal charges.

In addition to sanjeev’s comment:
Meanwhile, Manhattan DA Bragg suspended Trump investigation; two top prosecutors on the team had resigned in protest because they believed that Trump is guilty and they felt the DA didn’t seem interested…
And nobody in the FBI seems interested in Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.
It drives me nuts.
For the record, I think Bragg has been bought, or threatened. Trump has many friends in dark places.
Uncle Cosmo
It noticed your fingers were one key left of where you thought they were. Wicked smaht, that Barney Google!

@trollhattan:
more than one tanker has pointed out, tanks are great, if you have an infantry screen. The RA don’t, and where in previous wars, the infantry screen had to be out 1km, now they have to be out 5km.

@Frankensteinbeck:
I wonder when the statute of limitations runs out on these things.

@NotMax:
That asshole can’t face them. Let him sweat for the shit he’s done and what he’s put them through.

@Howard Beale IV: @Ohio Mom: @sanjeevs: @Frankensteinbeck: @Doc Sardonic: @Baud: @Frankensteinbeck: Aw this is just the latest right-wing chew-toy / masturbatory fantasy, led by a recent “investigation” by the WaPo that I’m 100% confident was begun and performed without any influence outside the newsroom and entirely in accordance with the strictest journalistic ethics, most definitely excluding any notions of “access” or “influence” with the Congressional Republican leadership.
From what I can tell, yes, there is a risk of indictment for some low-level regulatory violations, plus there is a whole lot of smoke about tax evasion and money-laundering and isn’t that the most extraordinary coincidence?
It’s the old Karl Rove trick: attack your opponent at your own weak points. Then any (well-deserved) response just looks like a pro-forma copycat attack.
MagdaInBlack
@bbleh: The right wing loon machine never let go of it. Rudy brings it up every opportunity. Same with Bannon. Don Jr has had several coke fueled rants about it. Sometimes they refer to the laptop, some times a hard drive. No one has ever shown anything but copies of copies, printed out. No sign of the actual laptop.
I was wondering when it would work it’s way to the top. ( Again)

@trollhattan:
I wouldn’t take the Russian performance in Ukraine as a general lesson. They’ve had a terrible time getting their different combat arms to coordinate well, and long combat experience says tanks need good support from their own infantry, or the enemy infantry can indeed defeat them with comparatively cheap weapons. With coordination, though, tanks are still really valuable. Friendly infantry protects them from enemy infantry, and the tanks provide the infantry with fire support that’s more available than what air or artillery can give.
Dan B
@Kelly: The story is, according to workers ar Chernobyl, that the Russian soldiers had not been told about the explosion at Chernobyl and wore no masks or protection while stirring up clouds of dust in the Red Forest. This is where pines turned red from intense gamma radiation. These young guys inhaled radioactive dust. If they die their bodies will have to be in lead lined bags or coffins.

And Republicans will run a corrupt, years long, politically motivated investigation because Dems always want to win the good sportsmanship award.
Maybe someday team D can figure out that you don’t bring a policy paper to a gun fight.
WaterGirl
@Dan B: Reading that makes me feel sick. Putin is as much of a monster as Hitler was; I just hope he can be stopped before he can do as much harm.
mrmoshpotato
@Kelly:
Oops.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato: Fuck. What kind of monster sends their troops into a situation like that.
No, that is not a question. Just disgust at how little (not at all) Putin cares for his troops. It’s like he doesn’t even see them as human.
Maybe one good thing can come of this, maybe the mothers whose sons don’t come home will come to understand rather than the believe the propaganda they are being fed.
edit: I see from a comment in the next Ukraine thread that Cheryl Rofer believes that this story is unlikely to be true. I hope that’s the case.
mrmoshpotato
@WaterGirl:
Same asshole who fucked with our elections in 2016 to install his orange shitstain. Fuck him. I doubt he sees his own country(wo)men as human.
WaterGirl
@mrmoshpotato:
I dare say that you are right about that.
