Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

He wakes up lying, and he lies all day.

Weird. Rome has an American Pope and America has a Russian President.

Petty moves from a petty man.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

The party of Reagan has become the party of Putin.

Just because you believe it, that does not make it true.

Fear or fury? The choice is ours.

I really should read my own blog.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

New McCarthy, same old McCarthyism.

We still have time to mess this up!

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Whatever happens next week, the fight doesn’t end.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

This blog will pay for itself.

But frankly mr. cole, I’ll be happier when you get back to telling us to go fuck ourselves.

Let’s bury these fuckers at the polls 2 years from now.

If you thought you’d already seen people saying the stupidest things possible on the internet, prepare yourselves.

People really shouldn’t expect the government to help after they watched the GOP drown it in a bathtub.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

It turns out that I have a hard time forgiving and forgetting a pack of self-righteous, angry, and ignorant fanatics who cursed at me and my now-wife and called us murderers over and over again. For months.

You see, after we got engaged but well before the wedding, my wife became pregnant. And at about the worst possible time – she was in her senior year of undergrad and applying to med school.

We were young, broke, and too proud to ask for help.

Planned Parenthood, when we finally called, gave us very detailed instructions for arrival. Guarded lot across the street, please don’t rise to the protestors’ bait, don’t bring much because airport-type security. (1990s version).

Sure enough, walking that gauntlet was very unpleasant at the first http://visit.to Planned Parenthood. And the second. And the sixth. And, well, all of them really.

But it wasn’t like we had a lot of choices but Planned Parenthood.

Nobody else provided prenatal care we could afford.

(Our daughter turns 25 in a couple of months.) /fin

This @RuthMarcus theory suggests that a goodly number of Republicans knew what was going down.

Which, if true, suggests today's focus on the leak is pure cover-up. https://t.co/xkklC1U5Oa

When they vote, the majority of White men and women vote for Republicans. Republicans have made it very cheat that they are forced birthers. No one should be surprised that a Conservative-heavy SCOTUS is now overturning Roe. Obergefell is next.

They obviously lied at their confirmation hearings, but were confirmed anyway. No one was fooled. They were installed on party line votes, except for our old friend houseboat Joe, who voted for all but the handmaiden. Perjury charges to impeach are vaporware unless this leads to a majority D senate.

I’m so horrified over this, but it’s not a surprise. It’s exactly what we said would happen.

We’re somewhere on the Dordogne River. We had lunch yesterday with four elderly, jolly Brits. Who laughed and asked us how “Sleepy Joe” was doing. To my surprise, I was offended not only by the appellation but also that a foreigner had the gall to use it to my face.

We’re home late Saturday, when I’ll be able to be on line for discussions. Right now, I mostly enjoy reading the threads that mock people like Madison Cawthorne.

    1.  So Scam Alito leaned in hard on the legal pronouncements of a 17th century witch-killing judge in scribbling that fetid chunk of shit. Now we know where his sympathies lie.
    2. In so doing, he also reveals an extremist form of originalism – that only the culture of the ancients, before we were even a country, matter.  Anything else becomes “not traditional” – meaning that the legal regimes of the previous 50-75 years (which is how people and businesses and local governments order their affairs) are now in a dangerous state of flux.
    3. When oral contraceptives and IUDs go up on the chopping block, this will be his further rationale in getting rid of them.
    4. This can also extend (obviously) to Oberfell and Loving.
    5. White Supremacist Peter Brimelow at VDARE (formerly NR, so he’s not specifically fringe) is practically tumescent over what this can mean regarding Brown vs Board.
    6. The Supreme Court’s Dred Scott decision was the “broken system” catalyst for the Civil War; the system was duct-taped together after that with the Reconstruction Amendments. Now that what profess was made is being chiseled away, we are perhaps in the same spot.

Technically, it is.  A miscarriage is, in medical terms, a “spontaneous abortion.”  Kay has been beating this drum for years; that the GOP banning the blanket term “abortion” is going to have all kinds of consequences for women’s health.  Plenty of women start spontaneous abortions and then go in for the medical one to finish it to save them from other conditions like, oh, infection, bleeding to death. You can bet that won’t be an option in some states going forward.

    @Enhanced Voting Techniques:

The miscarriage issue will become bigger and bigger as more states ban abortion. There are a lot of miscarriages and a lot of them require medical intervention:

    Jessica Scott
    @JessicaScott09
    ·17h
Think we’re being hysterical about #Roe? This conversation happened TODAY with one of my former students about a military spouse.

11 weeks pregnant, has a miscarriage, but it’s incomplete. Can’t get care in a Texas emergency room – no one will touch it with the 6 week abortion ban- has now spent a week trying to receive medical care for a miscarriage. The risk is infection where she could die, but there’s a secondary risk- if it isn’t treated she may not be able to have children at all.

Abortion aside, you’re taking a risk if you’re pregnant in one of these states. If something goes wrong you aren’t going to be able to get medical care. One woman was told to fly to Colorado immediately, which she had to do.

    Damned right they are.

The proxy war being waged within the Tory Party on behalf of its donor/owner factions has seen Flobalob’s formerly Teflon-coated hide stripped away by a steady stream of leaks and scandals to reveal the slimy truth beneath the Media personae.

He’s tried to choke off the threat to his position with lunatic schemes to buy (temporary) loyalty from far-Right MPs and a campaign to sabotage the electability arguments of his potential rivals, but all that’s done is ramp up the war of attrition against him to heights not even the stalwart arse-lickers of the Torygraph and BBC can reach.

So local Tories are looking around at the devastation this has wrought to the reputation of the Conservative Party and hoping they can gull enough voters into differentiating between ‘friendly neighbourhood local Conservatives’ and ‘Westminster Tories’, like there’s really a sliver of a difference between the local constituency set and the shower of greedy wankers they support for election once every five years.

I foresee a mixed bag of results, with the odd bloodbath, a lot of constituencies tottering on the edge of changing hands by a few votes and a ton of protest votes from Right and Left that will leave the Tories vainly claiming that it’s not a total wipeout, Labour falsely arguing that they never really expected to make really huge gains, and everyone else getting roundly ignored by our shite political Media.

    Flobalob is still doomed, though.

My first question for any Republican who claims to have this position would be “How is it compassionate to force a 13-year-old incest victim to bear the baby of her rapist?” “How is it compassionate to force a woman to go through 9 months of pregnancy by her rapist, making her think about him every day?” Fuck them, they see pregnant women as incubators, nothing more. I just heard on NPR that they are also saying they don’t want to go after birth control, which is another fucking lie. There was a woman high up in HHS in the Trump administration who was against all forms of hormonal birth control, and they approved of her! Just stop the fucking lying about your position on these things, Republicans – tell us what you intend to try to do to us. The lying on that side is an epidemic now. The press should just assume that they’re lying when they say things like that, but of course they won’t, they’ll nod and smile as if the person is telling the truth.

Kay you’re right, people have no idea of the ramifications of this type of decision. It’s tentacles will snake through all kinds of law. I read on Twitter that they already have a plan to do the same thing to gay marriage – after the Roe decision is released, the Texas AG will declare that Texas no longer believes it is bound by Obergefell, and will tell all county clerks to stop issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples. They want to get that to the Supreme Court, where they will rule in the same manner as they did on Roe.

So, will they quit trying to defund PP if it can no longer perform abortions?

    No.

    What would be the point?

Planned Parenthood was on the Wrong Side, and must be punished

    @Lapassionara:

I will be interested in comparing it to the final version. Will they be bold enough to leave words like “abortionists” and “egregious” in or will someone manage to temper the language. Seeing Alito as the ravening dog I now do, I’m not so sure.

Any watering-down will piss off their footsoldiers to a fare-thee-well. This Draft is such rich red meat, it’s hard to imagine how they’ll pull back the language without at least some backlash from their side — much less watering down actual impacts.

If the Right was the source of the leak, they may not have thought this through — but that’s utterly par for the course.

@Feathers: Maybe they’ll set aside money to build a memorial wall for all the good women who did what God wants them to do and die young. And another wall celebrating all the miracle births of babies who were still born and weren’t aborted but whom got restarted their heartbeats at the last minute.  A wall of miraculous births. Too bad that God judged you to be wanting and undeserving of a miracle.

@Anne Laurie:Women need to be subservient, workers need to be desperate, and the cruelty is the point.

Yes exactly. Once they are threw with the current list they will just make shit up just to have an excuse to attack everyone around them, heck, they are almost there with the way Q-anon’s baby molesting space reptiles is being mainstreamed by the Right.

@Peale: I remember when I started seeing pushback on women getting abortions because their  pregnancies would kill them. Then I recalled Gianna Beretta Molla, canonized by Pope John Paul II after dying of the cancer she refused to have treated while pregnant. You can feel she made the right choice, while also recognizing that we now have a significant portion of the population demanding that all American women be legally held to a behavior standard worthy of Catholic sainthood. This really is the whole game isn’t it.

@Dorothy A. Winsor: That was pretty cheeky. Given who their current prime minister is, no Brit has *any* standing whatsoever right now to poke fun at the US president.

BTW – Liz Warren can go fuck herself. Her performative rage has gotten stale and accomplishes nothing.

@Kay: Is there some wacko section of the Right that wants to ban mammograms?

Doubtless the ones who fancy themselves and their property (because you question their capacity to love) immune to breast cancer.
