Enough to give despicable bigots a case of the vapors.
Rusty
I am grateful to have the president call for banning assault weapons outright along with a number of other measures. For too long we on the left have been shy that this isn’t an issue that sharply divides the left and right. The gun loving right is never going to vote for a Democrat, no matter how pro-gun so it’s ridiculous to soft pedal the issue. Being bold at least gives a chance to pull in people in the middle that are horrified at the level of shootings. Of course when the SCOTUS finally releases its gun rights decision, the difference may be even more stark (and the ability to enact any meaningful legislation could be zero).
bbleh
@Rusty: True, but by joining the POLITICAL battle, there is at least a path forward to dealing with the issue eventually.
The alternative is to say “well, 60 Senate votes, SCOTUS, whatchagonnado?” and give up right from the start.
Dorothy A. Winsor
@NotMax: That’s going to ruffle some feathers. Truthfully, I’d be worried about violence

I thought Biden made a strong speech. My husband the normie was moved by it (he’s my yardstick to gauge how political events are perceived by liberal people who are not political junkies). He voiced a minor quibble about the “ban assault rifles, but if you don’t ban them, at least raise the age limit” component. He felt like asking lawmakers to raise the age limit as an alternative to a ban undermined the strength of the call for a ban. But I countered that it was a bow to reality.
And the reality still seems to be that nothing will pass at the federal level. Still, the Democratic president spoke and advocated for what the majority of the country wants. And the Democratic MOCs will vote for a package that reflects what the majority wants, and let the Republicans go on record as opposing it to accommodate the minority.
We seem to be doing more of that these days. There’s always the risk that it will make Dems look weak, but I think it’s a good thing. Let people see you try.
debbie
I wish the president had pointed out that mental illness isn’t always the culprit, but that 18-year-olds lack the developed prefrontal cortex they need to think their way through or beyond their anger. This alone should cause the minimum age to be 21, not 18.
JML
@debbie:
Probably too complex of a subject to address this way, especially in a speech about gun control? That needs to stick in something dedicated to advocacy for mental health, I think. One of the areas we get ourselves in trouble is trying to address every nuance, and losing clarity.
The point is a good one, but is a little too subtle/confusing for this environment and message set.
Geminid
If I were a Republican and I wanted to craft a strategy to counter the January 6 Commitee hearings, the last person I’d talk to is trump. He has a certain low cunning, but when it comes to broader strategic thinking he’s an idiot.

So we heard from the Maui County Police last night; they confirmed that the body they found is my husband’s son John (they have the same first name, it’s confusing). We don’t know cause of death yet; the officer said it would take two weeks for the toxicology report to come back. I have no idea what the next steps are; the officer said the morgue would contact us. John doesn’t have many possessions, and I doubt he has any bills beyond his rent. We’ll probably have the body shipped back here. I don’t know what we’ll do with his possessions; maybe have his friends box them up and ship them back here, paid for by us of course. I hate to have to travel to Maui to do this stuff, it’s not like we can just drive there! My husband is devastated, of course; he said it’s not real to him yet. I’m upset because I loved John, but I didn’t know him as well as hubby did. We did solve the puzzle of why he quit texting and calling last September; his friend said he got rid of his cell phone, so he hadn’t had one since then.
Contacting people about this is about as “fun” as you’d imagine; I’m going to call his employer when they open, around 1:00 my time. *sigh*sob

SO: the January 6th hearings begin next Thursday evening.
And, I think another massacre of schoolkids in a classroom was a bridge too far, even for Republican voters.
I think the winds are about to change.
Have been mostly offline, but am wondering if the police might wise up about assault weapons in their line of work. In Parkland and Uvalde, the police were no match whatsoever once an assault weapon came out. If memory serves, in Aurora and Sandy Hook, most of the murdering was over by the time the police were on the scene.
And: you have police officers dying from assault weapon fire. The hero cop on duty at King Soopers grocery store (was that Colorado??). The recent retired police officer, now a security officer, who died when he engaged the gunman at the Buffalo grocery store. He was entirely overmatched, but tried to stop the gunman anyway.
You have a nation alternately wincing and laughing at the cops in Uvalde, and their outright lying about what happened that day, and being caught out.
It seems it might be a lot better for police if the public did not have assault weapons. For one thing, they don’t want to be the butt of jokes. People are ridiculing the Uvalde cops, and that’s harder to take than outright injury and death.
The police also don’t want to be dead. (I think the Uvalde cops had a week to think about the hero security guy in Buffalo, who tried, and ended up dead. They did not want to be that guy.)
There is no reason to have assault weapons, in a civilized society, or in this relatively uncivilized one.
We need to break the gun lobby’s back on this one. And I know it will be very hard.
But situations change. And I think that may be in process now
Maybe we can work on the police departments, instead of just the gun lobby’s bought and paid for politicians (national and statewide).

Attendance seems to be dropping steadily. If trump’s minions try to schlapp something together without a lot of lead time they may be embarrassed by crowd size. Trump just made endorsements in the Wisconsin Governor and Arizona Senate primaries, so maybe he’ll rally in one of those states.

He’s so obvious, but too many political brainiacs think that he’s some sort of genius rather than a needy, sick, pathetic little man.
Cheers,
Scott.

@lowtechcyclist: For this reason alone, a lot of people who may either have never given transgender issues much thought — or found them confusing or awkward or just plain off (heck, that could have described me a dozen years ago, despite being a long-out gay man who used the LGBTQ label in my life and my organizing work) — will need to get at least minimally conversant and understand that for solidarity reasons, if not human kindness, the throwing of trans people under the bus has to be resisted loudly and unequivocally.
Trump (and an entire Trumpist party) will use ‘Mexican rapists’, trans athletes or anything else for their power purposes. Witness Ohio’s GOP trifecta gov’t about to pass a genital inspection law for children in sport. It’s the absolute creepiest, maximally intrusive, entirely suspicion-based attack on bodily autonomy and privacy.
Not to mention a wild entree for actual groomers (I think of all the poor gymnasts abused by a doctor in the wretched Karolyi Ranch scandal and spiral out from there).

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: Right. The GOP doesn’t actually believe that a government debt default would matter. If they control both chambers in 2023, they’ll drive over the debt limit cliff and hope that none of the risks will redound to them.
In our current environment, while I think they’re utterly wrong that default won’t matter, they’re probably all too right that “Congress and the president defaulted” will be how the crisis is covered.

Thanks for the condolences, everyone. It’s still not quite real to us yet. I talked to my husband’s daughter this morning – she called me, which is good. Perhaps she and her dad will reconcile, at least somewhat. If that happens it would be one good thing that could come out of this tragedy. I’m guessing this is massively illegal and would result in Florida losing ALL Medicaid funding as an unintended consequence, and he probably knows it.

@trollhattan: There was some other significant Navarro news last weekend. He announced that he had been subpoenaed to appear before a grand jury, and required to provide his communications with trump. I think this is a different matter than the January 6 Committee subpoena, and it’s the first indication I’ve noticed that Justice Department prosecutors are looking at conspiracy at the highest levels to overturn the Presidential election.
Navarro said he would fight the subpoena in court, and had a long list of people he’d sue to this end.

Zaktly. You can tell how much of a bodyblow the booing was to the UK News Media’s self-constructed image of Flobalob just from the shock (and a bit of well concealed pleasure) in the presenter voice.
They really do think it’s only political opponents who fail to appreciate his ‘man of the people’ appeal.
OTOH, the BBC and Sky chiefs who ordered the footage edited to add fake cheering (on the Sky clip its pretty clearly culled from an indoor event) are fully aware that their boy is a dud, but he’s their boy, and they know their job.

@Calouste: Cars are still cars, irrespective of whether they’re electric or not. I saw a similar thing with a local LED lighting outfit around these parts, the product got commoditized and the big firms with manufacturing and distribution heft took over. There’s no way Tesla can offer a full line of vehicles in the way a Ford or VW can. Most people want reliable (or at least predictable) cars that are marketed, serviced and resold through familiar channels, which is why they buy a buttload of F-150s and Camrys. Other battery manufacturers are scaling up and will beat Tesla on cost. Someone will buy Tesla IP when their stock takes a dive and harvest some tail end money from the bigs, but that won’t stop the major mfrs any more than TI was able to stop Samsung when it took over the DRAM market. In the end, Musk will still end up ridiculously wealthy.

A clarification on Navarro. There are two proceedings running in parallel.
1. He blew off a subpoena from the 1/6 committee, which voted to hold him in contempt and referred the matter to DOJ. He was indicted for contempt of Congress, and that’s what he was arrested for today.
2. He also got a subpoena from a grand jury that is investigating … something. He filed, pro se, an action attempting to quash that subpoena, making a host of procedural errors and including the sort of ridiculous rhetoric for which he is justly infamous. The judge gave him two weeks to fix it. I’m betting he won’t.
He has a chance to hit the quinella, gratuitously pissing off two different U.S. District Judges.
You do NOT want to be this guy today.
