Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Republicans cannot even be trusted with their own money.

Today in our ongoing national embarrassment…

There are consequences to being an arrogant, sullen prick.

When you’re a Republican, they let you do it.

Republicans do not pay their debts.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

When I decide to be condescending, you won’t have to dream up a fantasy about it.

“When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they’re gonna use it.”

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

75% of people clapping liked the show!

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

A thin legal pretext to veneer over their personal religious and political desires.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

He really is that stupid.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

One of our two political parties is a cult whose leader admires Vladimir Putin.

They are lying in pursuit of an agenda.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

Does someone at the White House read Balloon Juice? They did during the Obama years, I know that.

Asymmetric McMegan needs to stick to exhorting other peoples’ children to bumrush domestic terrorists, explaining how gastritis makes you bad with calculators and extolling the virtues of Himalayan pink salt.

I mean, I know she’s angling for Nooner’s role (maybe absent the drinking problem), but the thing is, people took Peggy seriously for quite a while. McMegan angled for the “rhetorically defending the wealthy against the poors” thing a bit too enthusiastically, too early. You have to nuance these things when you’re auditioning for Republican-Ms.-Manners, and she’s extremely well-known as a lightweight flake who isn’t all that quick.

Oh, the tragedy of the upper-middle-class striver-twit. Smart enough to know she’s not taken seriously, arrogant and insecure enough to care, but not smart enough to fix it. That’s gotta sting.

Think you may possibly be conflating Megan McArdle with Meghan McCain. Equally awful, but different.

There’s a third horrific individual in this group:

Megyn Kelly took shots at Dr. Anthony Fauci over his cavalier attitude about a possible GOP investigation into his work during the Covid pandemic.

On the Wednesday edition of SiriusXM’s The Megyn Kelly Show, she gave one last goodbye to the White House Chief Medical Advisor, who will be retiring in December.

Kelly was reacting to Fauci who was asked about a possible GOP congressional investigation surrounding his work. Fauci spoke with CNN’s John Berman about it earlier this week, saying he had nothing to hide.

“Fuck you, Dr. Fauci. You don’t get to say whether you go — you get a congressional subpoena, you show up or you get the Steve Bannon treatment!” Kelly added.

    h/t https://www.mediaite.com/tv/fck-you-dr-fauci-megyn-kelly-rages-at-outgoing-medical-advisor-for-saying-hell-consider-a-congressional-subpoena/

Of the three of them, I personally find Megyn Kelly the most vile and repulsive. Megyn Kelly isn’t fit to shine Fauci’s shoes and built her career working for Fox News Channel, the most intellectually dishonest and morally bankrupt media organization in America.

@UncleEbeneezer: Reminds me of a story from the Atlantic about him and his old man:

I remember back in the late 1990s, when Ira Katznelson, an eminent political scientist at Columbia, came to deliver a guest lecture. Prof. Katznelson described a lunch he had with Irving Kristol during the first Bush administration.

The talk turned to William Kristol, then Dan Quayle’s chief of staff, and how he got his start in politics. Irving recalled how he talked to his friend Harvey Mansfield at Harvard, who secured William a place there as both an undergrad and graduate student; how he talked to Pat Moynihan, then Nixon’s domestic policy adviser, and got William an internship at the White House; how he talked to friends at the RNC [Republican National Committee] and secured a job for William after he got his Harvard Ph.D.; and how he arranged with still more friends for William to teach at Penn and the Kennedy School of Government.

With that, Prof. Katznelson recalled, he then asked Irving what he thought of affirmative action. ‘I oppose it,’ Irving replied. ‘It subverts meritocracy.’

I think he’s doing classic Joe. He knows there are still decent people in the GOP, and while we may find that hard to swallow, we also know that to be true.

He’s creating a wedge in the GOP, that helps us, because it’s going to mean you’re either MAGA or some other form of GOPer and I guarantee you he is certain he can capture them. From what I’ve seen in the past 18 months, I can’t doubt him.

Depressed after his 2008 presidential flop, Rudy Giuliani and his third wife, Judith Giuliani, secretly moved into a bungalow across from Mar-a-Lago, former President Donald Trump’s club in Palm Beach, Florida, where Giuliani recovered from his political humiliation and started to drink heavily, according to a new book by Andrew Kirtzman. The bungalow was connected to Mar-a-Lago by a tunnel underneath South Ocean Boulevard, Kirtzman writes, according to The Guardian, which read an advance copy.

The tunnel is “one of many little-known passages and rooms beneath the expansive resort,” The Guardian reports. “The secret route allowed the couple to come and go from Trump’s home without the media knowing.”

Bloomberg’s Jason Leopold notes that the tunnels underneath Mar-a-Lago are actually part of the public record — though the Secret Service presumably locked them down after Trump was elected president.

As Kirtzman’s book, Giuliani: The Rise and Tragic Fall of America’s Mayor, nears its September publication, The Guardian reports, “underground rooms at Mar-a-Lago are in the news, after the FBI searched some for classified material taken from the White House at the end of Trump’s four years as president.”

President Biden has no f’s left to give. He gave quite a fiery speech tonight!

“Exuberant over a string of recent legislative victories, and launching his midterm campaigning in earnest, President Joe Biden swaggered into Maryland on Thursday and excoriated his predecessor’s philosophy as “semi-fascism,” in what constituted an unusually pointed and highly charged denunciation of Republicans.
“What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of extreme MAGA philosophy,” Biden told Democratic donors in the Washington suburb of Rockville. Calling out those he labeled as “extreme” Republicans, Biden said: “It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something, it’s like semi-fascism.””

No. Fauci said elsewhere in that interview that he would “consider” appearing before Congress in response to a subpoena. That is what Kelly was ranting about.

The rant is actually on target, but she is, of course, guilty of massive hypocrisy, since she has not given similar rants about all the Trump supporters ignoring Democratic Congressional subpoenas.
