For Sunday #GRAMMYs – Just in. @FLOTUS Jill Biden will be a presenter at the 65th Annual GRAMMY Awards in #LosAngeles on #CBS. 8 PM ET / 5 PM PT
— Lynn Sweet (@lynnsweet) February 1, 2023
I can’t even identify more than a few of the nominees, but I’ll really miss Quinn Cummings on Twitter snarking about the outfits. At least I can look forward to got Go Fug Yourself‘s commentary tomorrow…

I have watched an award show in years. But go Dr. J!
Yutsano
Dat dress…
In other news, the face of Lil Marco when told about the fact that three mainland China balloons were flown during the previous administration is priceless. I would have put this below but that thread is getting long.
danielx
Supposed to be a Christine McVie tribute featuring Bonnie Raitt, Mick Fleetwood and Sheryl Crow. That should be interesting.
Sean Nuttall
Is Kansas nominated for anything? Oops, showing my age again.
pluky
The only awards show I watch is The Tonys. Nobody else has any sense of stagecraft.
MattF
@Yutsano: Actual question… Are the RW politicians that piled on to this one unaware of how ridiculous they look? I suppose they want to keep the Base riled up about Bad Bad Biden, but by completely abandoning credibility with anyone else?
gwangung
Not watching the awards, but I tend to check out the music mentioned by folks.
eclare
I’ll watch, I like awards shows. But it will never be the same without Joan and the Fashion Police.
suzanne
I might watch. I like the outfits.
Ramalama
ABBA. Not their best album, nominated. I love them, have been slightly obsessed with them since 7th grade, but it would be so weird if they won.
JaySinWA
@Yutsano:
Okay I’d seen the three balloon statement several times but hadn’t seen the original source so I tracked it down from the DOD transcript of a DOD unnamed source on background:
https://www.defense.gov/News/Transcripts/Transcript/Article/3288618/senior-defense-official-and-senior-military-official-hold-an-off-camera-on-back/
A bunch of ex Trump officials including Bolton claimed on FOX they (to paraphrase) never heard it, didn’t see it, no never in your life, how silly it all seems without any proof. The quotes are “not to my knowledge” with a few “I think I would have been briefed” disclaimers.
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-top-national-security-officials-refute-claim-chinese-spy-balloons-transited-us-under-last-admin
It will be interesting to see any FOIA results that I am sure have been file

@pluky
Ditto on the only one I make the effort to watch. One of the very few reasons I have an over-the-air antenna hooked up, in order to tune to CBS that evening. Still fuming that part of the whole shebang is only available on Paramount+ now.
zeecube
Not watching. But did set DVR to record pre-show red carpet segment for Ms. Zeecube.

A college friend won a Grammy last week for entertainment law. He’s had an amazing career!

@JaySinWA: I wouldn’t be surprised if the DOD actually DID tell Trump administration people and it went in one ear and out the other.
MomSense
I’m watching to root for Molly Tuttle. She is such an amazing musician and a really nice person.
JWR
Anybody Watching the Grammies?
Long story short, no
ETA I like real music. ;)
JaySinWA
@gwangung: I see a number of options:
1 they are lying
2 they didn’t listen (your premise)
3. the incursions were so limited they ignored or forgot it
4. the incursions were deemed too trivial to tell them
5. the real fear that if they told them they would try to do something stupid and disproportionate
I’ll go with option 4. myself. What purpose would briefing them serve if there was no prolonged incursion?
HeleninEire
@suzanne: Yeah. I like the outfits too. But I don’t have the patience to watch. I’ll fire up the internet tomorrow and take a look.
Alison Rose
I can’t be bothered to watch the whole thing, I just wanna see Harry Styles perform.
Baud
@JaySinWA:
I hope it turns out that some of the Mar-a-Lago documents are about Chinese balloons.
Yutsano
You could have stopped right there.
Alison Rose
@Baud: More likely Chinese food.

I won’t be watching the Grammies. But I’ll take advantage of an open thread.
I am so excited about the release of Hogwarts Legacy video game. I bought myself a Playstation 5 (which the tracking says should arrive Tuesday) just so I could play it. My eyes cannot get enough of the scenery and the beauty of the whole thing.
None of my friends are interested, although their grandchildren might be, and I am bursting tell somebody! So I’m telling you : )
My brother tried to help me learn to play Wolfenstein back in the late 80s or early 90s, and I was a complete failure. It was hilarious. I hope I do better now on PS5 than I did on that.
I’ve been looking at tons of YouTube videos and I’ve also found some games that are easy for video game newbies. So as soon as my PS5 arrives, I’ll download one of those, probably Last Stop or Stray, and start learning. I can download Hogwarts Legacy at midnight Monday, so I’m hoping my device might arrive tomorrow. It’s in Jacksonville now, and I’m near Tampa, so I’m guardedly hopeful.

The right wingnuts in Missouri’s congressional delegation can’t let go of the balloon. They keep whining about “letting” it overfly military installations in the state. Even though anyone can access interesting satellite images on the internets. 38.724379, -93.548921

OT My adoptive cat Dobby who had a horrible early life ( my first consult the vet wanted to declare last rites. The previous owners were my stepkid and her husband. The backstory is worse.) We saw him fail and rushed to the vet. Any issue I have with my stepdaughter is colored by this event. How can I trust them again with anyone or any animal I care for. Answer is I cannot and I will not.

Youtube used to have the 1971 live Grammys broadcast. Brook Benton was a stellar drunk presenter and you can see the Beatles too busy squabbling to accept the award.
sab
@sab: My stepdaughter cannot believe that kids can actually love animals. That is what you do to show your foster/adoptive parents that you are capable of love. Her kids do love animals.
Not saying these kids cannot love. Just saying that pets are way below the choices. They can love people.
Be wary. They love, but not everyone or everything that you love.
HumboldtBlue
Another interesting thread.

I’m so old I remember when the Go Fug Yourself girls would cap on this wanna be rich girl who kept showing up at award shows like she was someone. Her dad was one of OJs lawyers. Who does this Kim Kardashian think she is? Times change.
brendancalling
I won’t be watching. Corporate rock always sucks.
J R in WV
I don’t usually watch awards shows, none of them really. Grammys are the ones we’re most likely to watch as we’re both into music. We don’t get over-the-air TV, nor cable, so internet is it for us.
But having learned that Bonnie Raitt is a nominee, I wish we could see that, because she deserves every music award there is!
We saw her open for Little Feat back in the ’70s and she was wonderful. When Little Feat took the stage, we stayed as long as she was on stage with them, but after just a couple of pieces by LF we were outta there, had a 80 minute drive home after the show. A genius of guitar AND sings like a goddess.
Right up there with Linda Ronstadt, Emmy Lou Harris, etc. The only current performer close is Susan Tedeschi, who is also a goddess of guitar and voice. Her husband is pretty good too, but she is amazing. Just muy $0.02 worth. I’m not up on the latest superstars, but those two are top drawer to me.
OverTwistWillie
We had fame and fortune. Now all we needed was the approval of record company low-lifes.

The best moment of any awards show in the last 25 years, IMHO, was when Garth Brooks left his AMA award for best artist on the podium.
trollhattan
@sab: Back when mall pet stores sold cats and dogs, there were countless articles warning “a pet is not a fuzzy toy” in an attempt to warn off parents tempted to impulse-purchase the puppy or kitten their kid was begging for.
That’s over with but the internet offers countless shortcut pet choices, instead. They remain not for everybody.
brendancalling
On the topic of music and open threads, I’m about to go Buddy Rich on the guys I play with—and justifiably so—so instead, I’m going to go Louis and Ella and call the whole thing off. Then I’m going to find different musicians who actually believe in practicing and getting better, and start the band over with new personnel.
trollhattan
@J R in WV: We’re seeing Bonnie next month–it will be our second time and I can’t wait.
Our first time, Mavis Staples opened. That was a show.
Here are Bonnie and Little Feat from 1977, but before Bonnie, how about some Emmylou?

@brendancalling: “… start the band over with new personnel.“
Good luck! I’m curious how you do that. I think that’s the heavy lift my buddy and I have that keeps us a duo doing Open Mics.
Steeplejack
@sab:
What is Dobby’s actual status? Your message is kind of confusing.
🤞

Definitely watching. The Grammys and Tonys are the only awards shows worth watching. There’s always some great music at the Grammys and who doesn’t want to watch all the greatest theater kids ever performing at the Tonys? The only painful thing about the Grammys for me is the country music, which I despise. But I’ll sit through it for all the rest.
frosty
@J R in WV: You’ve got a great cohort there! I saw the first three in the 70s at the Troubadour, Palomino Club and Santa Monica Civic. Never got around to Tedeschi-Trucks though.
trollhattan
@trollhattan: ETA at about 8 minutes Bonnie performs “Runaway” and you can see the late great Norton Buffalo do his famous harp solo, including switching keys without missing a note.
sab
@Steeplejack: Dobby is fine. Happy with us. Very much misses Starscream, who died New Years. Four cats and one dog here. One dog and three cats like Dobby.
Starscream dying blew up everything in our household because absolutely every person and every dog and every cat who ever met StarScream loved him.
Another Scott
@JaySinWA: ISWYDT.
Cheers,
Scott.
Skepticat
Wait, you actually think they have any credibility to abandon?
Miss Bianca
@brendancalling: Oh, man…I’ve never heard that whole Buddy Rich rant, only heard about it. HARSH.
And sorry about the crappy bandmate situation. Been there, done that, been done by that.
persistentillusion
@J R in WV: You are completely correct. I saw Bonnie at a small college concert that had her roadies place a dead fish with a lit cigarette in it’s mouth on the chair provided for the performance and thought “She’s my kind of people”. Never looked back.

Anybody Watching the Grammies?
Probably not, but I will check out the list of winners later. I don’t keep up with much music anymore and don’t know any of the nominees in any category.
I agree that the Tony people put on a good show. But again, if I have not seen even a past production of say, a revival of a play, I am not that interested.
Steeplejack
@sab:
Whew. Thanks. I love Dobby.
JaySinWA
@Another Scott: I don’t know what The Who you are talking about ;)

@J R in WV: Grace Potter is pretty great too, if you’re into that kind of thing–her voice reminds me of Ann Wilson from Heart. I think they’ve toured together.
The Up and Up
It might be the case where the Grammy Awards show is viewed by the same number of people who watch the Pro Bowl today. 8.8 million?
sab
@Steeplejack: Dobby is a well loved doofus.
We were watching a Midsomer Murder episode today, and Dobby wanted to land on my arm and bite it. He had his heart set on chewing my arm. I let him chomp a bit until it hurt, and then I tossed the little twerp into a great lake. (Erie.)

Gotta work, so I’m recording it. No spoilers! Also, I can fast forward through the commercials, the boring parts, and all the artists I’ve never heard of. I guess that’s most of it.

Have some friends nominated for a Grammy so…yes.
