Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

You cannot shame the shameless.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Our messy unity will be our strength.

Russian mouthpiece, go fuck yourself.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

It’s a good piece. click on over. but then come back!!

Beware of advice from anyone for whom Democrats are “they” and not “we.”

The cruelty is the point; the law be damned.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

Republicans firmly believe having an abortion is a very personal, very private decision between a woman and J.D. Vance.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

How any woman could possibly vote for this smug smarmy piece of misogynistic crap is beyond understanding.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

No offense, but this thread hasn’t been about you for quite a while.

It’s pointless to bring up problems that can only be solved with a time machine.

The real work of an opposition party is to oppose.

Jack be nimble, jack be quick, hurry up and indict this prick.

I am pretty sure these ‘journalists’ were not always such a bootlicking sycophants.

This blog will pay for itself.

Too often we confuse noise with substance. too often we confuse setbacks with defeat.

They spent the last eight months firing professionals and replacing them with ideologues.

#HappeningNow "I came here to help, not get the shit beat out of me" – a member of Proud Boys, with visible blood on his face ushered away from Drag Queen Story Hour event in NYC as protesters chant "Fuck the Proud Boys" https://t.co/bXZXQWtfVH pic.twitter.com/ObbuyZXOVo

— Oliya Scootercaster ?? (@ScooterCasterNY) March 19, 2023

(More details here.)

All I can make out in the clip below is NAZIS GO HOME, which I doubt is coming from the Proud Boys…

And here in the West Village, the NYPD is giving an armed escort to the Proud Boys, who are shouting slurs at people on the street. pic.twitter.com/GEkRUfklRW

— Max Burns (@themaxburns) March 19, 2023

Meanwhile:

Bring it on. I want the airwaves flooded with images of braying MAGA fascists blubbering and brawling with cops while their Dorito Duce is led away. https://t.co/phBjVmGrd3

— Peter Wolf (@peterawolf) March 18, 2023

The j6 mob thought Trump was going to deploy the military to help them overturn the election, partly because he was saying that's what he would do, and then bing bong boom Trump becomes god emperor for life. Breaking him out of jail doesn't involve any of that

— Hemry, Local Bartender (@BartenderHemry) March 19, 2023

Don't get me wrong obviously Trump would like a large mob to break him out of jail but the promise now is not "I will lead you to glorious & final victory over the loony left" but "you will now be responsible for my fugitive ass"

— Hemry, Local Bartender (@BartenderHemry) March 19, 2023

Lots of concern over if Trump's calls for a protest could be a "set up." "This could be a massive, nationwide set up to get more Patriots into prison," one user wrote.

— Zachary Petrizzo (@ZTPetrizzo) March 18, 2023

Straight from the horse’s… mouthpiece. The Daily Beast quotes Ali Alexander (widely suspected of turning over his J6 comrades to the Feds), as “Officials Prep for Protests as MAGA Sycophants Push ‘Patriot Moat’ Around Mar-a-Lago”:

… The idea of creating a protective barrier around Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate led to chatter about what type of rifle ammunition could take down low-flying aircraft sent to take the former president into custody.

Earlier on Saturday morning, “Stop the Steal” leader Ali Alexander suggested “100,000 patriots” should “shut down all routes to Mar-a-Lago.”

Despite publicly calling for action to take place, Alexander said he wouldn’t be participating in such an event.

Likewise, Alexander claimed on Telegram to have spoken to far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones—who also expressed zero interest in organizing another protest in the name of Trump.

“He’s not protesting either,” he added of Jones. “We’ve both got enough going on fighting the government. No billionaire is covering our bills.”

During an “emergency” Saturday broadcast, Jones carefully attempted to thread the needle between supporting Trump’s calls for protests over a possible indictment—and warning his own followers of potential fallout from such events turning violent.

“Do not be provocateured [sic] into violence,” Jones said, while warning his followers of dubious agents attempting to hijack pro-Trump rallies…

Other ultra-MAGA personalities took swings at Trump for even suggesting protests after the events of Jan 6.

“The last time Trump’s biggest fans protested on his behalf, he left them all to rot in jail without so much as a penny from him in legal fees,” right-wing pundit Jesse Kelly wrote. “Not a penny. Shame on him for this. Do NOT go to a blue area and protest for this man. Ignore this.”

Similarly, Steve Bannon ally Grace Chong discouraged Trump supporters from attending protests while declaring: “Don’t be stupid.”…

See the thing to do is to rout them, being careful to get 4k videos of them running out of breath and tripping out of their cargo pants, and then put those guys in jail too. https://t.co/uFIC4XNRTy

I love the welcome NYC is giving the Nothing to be Proud of Boys.

As for the ‘Patriot Moat’, a flooded ditch sounds like the very place for these dimwits. Espescially in Florida, we have gators, pythons, water moccasins etc in every puddle. I think the brain eating amoeba are out of luck though.

Speaking of Nazis, one the U.K.’s leading TERFs, Posie Parker, is on a hate tour of Australia. At a rally in Melbourne earlier this week, about a dozen “seig heil”ing actual Nazis showed up in support—and the police shoved counter-demonstrators out of the way so they could stand with her. Neither Parker now her compatriots said anything to disavow them — although the TERFs are now claiming that they weren’t actually Nazis because they didn’t display any swaztikas (which are illegal in Oz).

Unlike the States there’s major fallout, intense criticism of the cops, a move to ban the Nazi salute, and Parliament is taking about kicking out an MP You ho attended the rally.

Reminds me of the song “Urban Struggle” by the punk jesters the Vandals, which mocked Urban Cowboy craze and had a line about cowboys starting fights with the punks — and getting their asses kicked. This was one of the things that stood out to me as the Jan 6th arrests started.  The insurrectionists did it assuming that they would not, could not get in any trouble for it.  They were mind blown when they got arrested.  They were a bunch of chickenshit cowards who had been sold that this was a zero risk walk in the park.  They took all those selfies and stole stuff because they had absolutely no clue that they were in any legal danger.

Then they started whining for pardons and Trump ignored them.  As is mentioned in passing in the OP, a fair number of them wrote Trump off then and there.  I suppose we’ll never know how many.

@Sister Golden Bear: A little more specificity – this happened saturday. Also, while the legislative action is good it’s only happening in the state parliament of victoria – so the state party is kicking out a state MP and the state is banning the salute. The actual PM of the whole country (who is nominally left within the centre left labor party) has not issued a single peep. In fact not one of the country’s newspapers reported on this for over 24 hours until the online outrage finally prompted a response from the Victorian state premier (kind of = governor). It’s pretty unpleasant. Anyhow, since the odious transphobe is travelling through my town later this week, guess I have a date with a pro-trans protest….

And some boys did themselves dress as girl, and the opposite was also true, and it was good. And that some did not wish to remain themselves with the gender they were assigned at birth based on outward signifiers of their sex, and it was good. @Tony G: There’s about 36,000 NYPD officers. It’s a big city, but JFC that’s nuts.
    LAPD at 10,000.
    Chicago has around 11,600.
    Houston ~5,300.

If LAPD was at the same force:population ratio as NY, they’d be 16,300
Chicago is +/- in line with NY’s ratio
Houston is way lower than the NY proportion

Anyway, allocating a couple dozen “NY’s Finest” on scooters barely even causes a ripple in one of the 77 precincts.

@cain: I don’t know what happened to him.  He didn’t want to go to college so he took the NYPD test and did very well.  When I heard he was joining the force, I had a sinking feeling.

I remember talking to him 6 months after he got out of the academy and he stated that ni$$er! were really low life.

I am baffled because my brother and sister-in-law were not a place he would learn such attitudes.

I think he felt that he had to fit in with the NYPS culture and the culture is racist and exclusionary.

In his first 12 years on the force he racked up 24 complaints for the use of excessive force. He was disciplined once.

I found this out by going to the NYC Civilian Complaints Review Board website and searching his name.  To his credit, I guess, he has not had a complaint in the last eight or nine years.  Maybe marrying in his 30s and now having 2 young kids mellowed him.  I hope so.

Opinion Why white Christian nationalists are in such a panic

You might find it strange that a large segment of the Republican base thinks Whites are the true victims of racism and that Christians are under attack. After all, America’s biggest racial group is still Whites; the most common religious affiliation remains Christianity. Whites and Christians dominate elected office at all levels, the judiciary and corporate America. What’s the problem?

Well, there is a straightforward reason for the freak-out, and an explanation for why former president Donald Trump developed such a close bond with white Christian nationalists. This group feels besieged because they are losing ground. “The newly-released 2022 supplement to the PRRI Census of American Religion — based on over 40,000 interviews conducted last year — confirms that the decline of white Christians (Americans who identify as white, non-Hispanic and Christian of any kind) as a proportion of the population continues unabated,” writes Robert P. Jones, president of the Public Religion Research Institute. “As recently as 2008, when our first Black president was elected, the U.S. was a majority (54%) white Christian country.” By 2014 the number had dropped to 47 percent, and in 2022 it stood at 42 percent.

The group that has declined the most is at the core of the MAGA movement, the group most devoted to Christian nationalism. “White evangelical Protestants have experienced the steepest decline. As recently as 2006, white evangelical Protestants comprised nearly one-quarter of Americans (23%). By the time of Trump’s rise to power, their numbers had dipped to 16.8%,” Jones explains. “Today, white evangelical Protestants comprise only 13.6% of Americans.”

And that decline may yet accelerate, because they skew older than the population as a whole. Put differently, there are far more baby boomers in this group than Generation Z members. White evangelicals are “losing” people with each successive generation. (“White Christian subgroups have each lost approximately half their market share just across the generations who are alive today,” according to Jones.) If your business had lost half its market share, you would be panicking, too.

With those kind of numbers, the responsible thing to do would be to think about “fixing” what’s wrong by adapting to a changing market. Instead, many in this cohort have doubled down, becoming the foot soldiers in the red-hatted MAGA movement. The decline isn’t going to be reversed by angry, gray-haired folks demanding abortion bans and “don’t say gay” bills.

@kalakal: Relatedly, there’s be a lot of whining in recent days by Minnesota Republicans that they aren’t getting any respect or bipartisanship (though a good data journalist has found that something like 25% of GOP amendments to state legislative bills are getting added, even if the bills overall are all Dem sponsored).

And I keep pointing out: The GOP hasn’t been able to win a single statewide race of any sort – governor, AG, US Senator, S.O.S. – for twelve years.

You’re in the minority and have little power … because that’s what you’ve earned. Last year you fielded bad candidates and lost control of the one chamber you’d held. Because you embraced the Covid-crazies and the MAGA noise and we, collectively, in Minnesota, are sick of that shit.

now have criminal records at the federal level. That’s helpful :)

You bet it is. You know those sentences many in then got that seemed infuriatingly low? That’s because if the sentencing guidelines for someone with no record. If they pull crap like that again and get caught, it’ll be easy worse. The ones who aren’t incurably stupid will think twice because of that, and the ones that are will get put away for a long time.

@Sister Golden Bear: I don’t know if any Repubs have said they’re running for DiFi’s seat, but I’m sure a few will try. It’s kind of cute. Makes you wanna pat them on the head and be like “Sure, buddy, you run for that seat, you’re gonna do great!”

Reminds me of an SFGate headline from June last year after Dahle won the GOP primary: “California Republicans Send Latest Sacrifice to Gavin Newsom”. Accurate, considering Newsom won by nearly 20 percentage points.

    @Redshift: Nice!

And I do understand  that federal crimes are especially costly and personally burdensome to defend oneself against, because you have to have a lawyer who’s admitted to practice in federal court (more expensive and harder to retain) and your case  must be heard at  a federal courthouse, which aren’t in every two-horse county seat, needless to say.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the PBs and the rest of the militias have so many fbi agents in them now that after the sentences are imposed, some chapters will consist of so many  agents largely unknown to each other, that in a couple of years there will be court cases involving  various branches of law enforcement.

Lets hope so. They are a menace and threaten the monopoly of violence that keeps a state relatively secure from fatal insurgencies

I seem to remember that moats were cesspools (cesspits?) for castles, were all the waste was dumped. Unspeakably nasty for anyone living in the castle, but no one in their right mind would try to wade or swim through a moat.

“MAGAT moat” does have a ring to it.

@Sister Golden Bear: That would be great. But the senate is a one-seat margin, and while our districts aren’t gerrymandered, we have a population-concentration issue.

Our A.G. race was a straight D-R matchup and Ellison only won by 0.84% (20,800 votes). So R’s remain in striking distance, but can’t find the right formula with their MAGA bullshit. If they moderate slightly, they could start winning – and then like Pawlenty, govern to the right of their campaign positions.

There’s anecdotal stories that what Walz and the Dems are doing is attracting liberals to move here. More than anecdotes in terms of families with trans kids. Enough to increase margins? Hmm.

And our state senate will stay on a knife’s edge since our “D” seats win by 10-40% but the exurban and mid size town “R” seats win by 2-5%.
