Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

When do the post office & the dmv weigh in on the wuhan virus?

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Not so fun when the rabbit gets the gun, is it?

Not all heroes wear capes.

fuckem (in honor of the late great efgoldman)

Meanwhile over at truth Social, the former president is busy confessing to crimes.

Putting aside our relentless self-interest because the moral imperative is crystal clear.

Fuck the extremist election deniers. What’s money for if not for keeping them out of office?

Bark louder, little dog.

Red lights blinking on democracy’s dashboard

No Justins, No Peace

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

Prediction: the GOP will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

Teach a man to fish, and he’ll sit in a boat all day drinking beer.

“I never thought they’d lock HIM up,” sobbed a distraught member of the Lock Her Up Party.

Let me eat cake. The rest of you could stand to lose some weight, frankly.

When someone says they “love freedom”, rest assured they don’t mean yours.

Is it negotiation when the other party actually wants to shoot the hostage?

Spilling the end game before they can coat it in frankl luntz-approved dogwhistles.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

Since when do we limit our critiques to things we could do better ourselves?

A snarling mass of vitriolic jackals

Nebraska update from Doktor Zoom at Wonkette:

Nebraska state Senator and early lock for Wonkette Legislative Badass of the Year Machaela Cavanaugh and other Democrats in the state’s weird unicameral legislature are continuing to shut the 2023 session doooown, despite Republican attempts this week to make the multi-tactic filibuster harder. Cavanaugh vowed early in the session that she wouldn’t let any bills move forward in the body until Republicans drop Legislative Bill 574, which would ban gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. And so far, the resistance to the bill, led by Cavanaugh and by fellow Democratic state Sen. Megan Hunt — whose son Ash Homan, 12, is trans — hasn’t budged.

On Tuesday this week, Republicans in the Legislature passed changes to the body’s rules, limiting some of the parliamentary tactics that the Democrats have used to slow and stop debate on everything. As the nonprofit news outlet Nebraska Examiner — god we love all these state and regional journalism nonprofits! — explains, the new rules

restrict how often senators can seek to pause debate, send a bill back to a committee or indefinitely postpone discussion. Only one of each type of motion per day, per round of debate can be filed.

Sen. Steve Erdman — a Republican, although the Nebraska Lege is nominally nonpartisan; everyone just knows who’s who — said the rules change was needed to allow open debate on bills. He claimed the change was perfectly fair, to allow the body to “have full and fair debate on the bills as presented.” Erdman added, very nonpartisanly, “Listen to who is in opposition [to the rule changes], and you can quickly conclude why we’ve wasted 50 days.”

Cavanaugh and Hunt weren’t fazed by the rule changes in any case. They said they’d use any and all means available to keep the filibuster going, because what part of You Shall Not Pass (your stinking anti-trans bill) didn’t you understand? After the rules change was voted in, they and a third Democrat, state Sen. Danielle Conrad, spent Wednesday filing every single slow-down motion they could, and by the end of the day, the three had

filed 742 motions on the bills that have come out of committee, taking up each of the three slots senators have under the new rules to file priority motions. They promised to do so on every bill that reaches the floor.

“We are blowing up this session,” Hunt said. “The session is over, and it’s on your terms. The terms were made clear to you for the last four to six weeks. Hating trans kids is more important to you than the rest of this session. … Human rights are hanging by a thread.”

Conrad said the majority could go ahead and try to rig the rules, but that “a filibuster will flow like water” around efforts to move the anti-trans bill forward.

    […]

Good, good. I sent them both contributions earlier.  [eta – just donated to Conrad now.]

    Well worth a click.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

Youngkin is adept at being two-faced, dropping MAGA dog-whistles out of one side of his mouth and projecting a harmless fleece-vest dad vibe from the other.

Seriously though, Taibbi’s version might be the worst and most obvious, but the number of credible institutions that have taken Trump’s indictment as an opportunity to propose “We should tread lightly around powerful men” as a philosophy of governance is dismaying and revealing.

I think it’s so great that someone finally held Trump accountable for something because it will show Taibbi and the rest of the media ninnies to be wrong- nothing bad is going to happen to us as a country because Donald Trump gets mad at us.
He’ll just be a defendant. He’ll enter the big Justice Machine and get processed and everyone else can just go about their business. It’ll be fine.

Re: Glenn Youngkin’s win in Virginia.

Joe Biden carried Virginia in 2020 by 10, the biggest margin of victory for a Democrat since 1964. The following year Glenn Youngkin surprised people with a 2 point win. What made this 12 point swing?

There was clearly a relative dropoff among Democratic voters, just like there was the following year in New York and in Southern California. I have not seen any evidence that this dropoff was greater among white Democrats than among their Hispanic or Black counterparts.

Republicans came out in relatively greater numbers. This is not surprising. They had the best candidate they’d fielded in many years, and they were hungry in a way Democrats were not.

Some of the 12 point swing can be attributed to Independents who swung from Biden to Youngkin. Independents run about 32% of registered voters here.* If one tenth of the 32% switched, that’s over 6 pounts of the 12 point swing.

I think campaign quality made a difference in this race. Youngkin’s team ran an energetic and efficient campaign. All the Democrats I’ve talked to think that McAuliffe did not. And Republicans had one other advantage in 2021 that they did not have in 2020: Donald Trump was not on the ballot.

*Virginia does not register by party. This number comes from the frequent Wason Center polls of registered Virginia voters. It’s pretty consistent from poll to poll.

    The fucking chutzpah:

Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law, called the indictment “troubling” during an appearance at the FII Institute’s Priority Summit in Miami Beach on Friday.

“I think what was announced last night was also very unprecedented. And as an American, it’s very troubling to me to see the leader of the opposition party be indicted,” Kushner said, according to video posted by Bloomberg News.

“And I think that that shows, obviously, the fear that the Democrats have of Trump and the political strength that he has,” Kushner continued. “And just as a family member, obviously, Ivanka and I love him very much. It’s been hard to watch the opponents of him politically continue to break every norm over the last years to try to – to try to get him, and you know we’ve seen them accuse him of colluding with Russia, we saw them impeach him, we saw them raid his home. And all this is a continuation of that.”

Right. Because Democrats are the norm-breakers here.

I’m not commenting as much as I once did — I’m  in the hospital, since Tuesday!

I had “minor” surgery that morning, to install a chemo port — but they also punctured my left lung! I’ve  had a  chest tube until this morning and just now another doctor came in to tell me the lung isn’t healed yet.

So they’re going to put in another chest tube in a few minutes. Not going home yet.  And of course a week after I get home I’ll start a big old course of old fashioned Chemotherapy… yay!

So you all jackals think of me while you celebrate, please.

@Elizabelle: Peach Schnapps? Or there’s probably a peach flavor of White Claw. Neither sound all that appealing though (and heaven knows TFG has been doing A LOT of that). The classic cocktail I most associate with the South is the Mint Julep and those are pretty great. There may be some peach themed cocktails out one could find with a little research. One could always do some sort of peach shrub and I could see that being delicious if done right.

    •  Donald Trump is likely to be arraigned on Tuesday, and his charges will be unsealed then.  His lawyer said he would not take a plea deal and would go on trial.
    • The case is an unprecedented moment in U.S. politics that heralds a tumultuous stretch for a deeply divided nation.

    Beneath this:

Analysis:  Trump Faces Prosecution, and a Democracy is Tested

For over two centuries, U.S. presidents were effectively shielded from indictment.  But Donald Trump’s case breaks that taboo.

[Yes, this analysis is by Peter Baker, Republican knob polisher.]

The FTF NY Times keeps at it.  From their updates:

He is the first former U.S. president to be a criminal defendant, and his indictment puts the legal and political systems in uncharted territory.

Donald J. Trump was weighing his next steps on Friday after becoming the first president to face criminal charges, an unprecedented moment in American politics that has drawn sharply partisan responses from Democrats and Republicans and heralds a tumultuous stretch for a deeply divided nation.

Sharply partisan responses!  Dang.  They heard our champagne corks.  And laughter with applause.

… Legal experts say that Mr. Trump and others appear to be at “substantial risk” of prosecution for violating a number of Georgia statutes, including the state’s racketeering law.
In May, a special grand jury in Fulton County was sworn in, and heard testimony from 75 witnesses behind closed doors over a series of months. The jurors produced a final report, but the most important elements of it — including recommendations on who should be indicted, and on what charges — remains under seal.
However, its forewoman, Emily Kohrs, has said that indictmentswere recommended for more than a dozen people. Asked in an interview if those included Mr. Trump, she declined to answer directly, but said: “You’re not going to be shocked. It’s not rocket science.

It’s reported Fani Willis is likely to file her charges by early May.

Marjorie Taylor Green will be in NYC on Tuesday.  To protest this WITCH HUNT.

Plus, Youngkin was a strong retail campaigner, but that would not be that great an asset if he jumps in this year’s race. @Elizabelle: It’s smart ay not to talk about this indictment, because we don’t know what’s in it yet. Hew Hewitt was emphasizing this on his radio show this morning.

And Maryland Governor Wes Moore is a promising talent. I’m not sure, but I think he’s in his early 40s.

    Also from Political Wire:

“When former President Donald Trump arrives for his first appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court next week, he will look up at a judge who has played a key role in several investigations involving those in Trump’s orbit,” CBS Newsreports.

“Judge Juan Merchan presided over the convictions and guilty plea last year of two Trump Organization companies, and their former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, one of Trump’s most trusted advisers. Merchan is also overseeing the ongoing criminal proceedings involving Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist and senior counselor in the White House who has pleaded not guilty to state fraud and money laundering charges.”

I’m sure this judge fits TFG’s definition of racist against him!😂😁😂

    Donald J. Trump

    @realDonaldTrump ·6h

The Judge “assigned” to my Witch Hunt Case, a “Case” that has NEVER BEEN CHARGED BEFORE, HATES ME. His name is Juan Manuel Marchan, was hand picked by Bragg & the Prosecutors, & is the same person who “railroaded” my 75 year old former CFO, Allen Weisselberg, to take a “plea” deal (Plead GUILTY, even if you are not, 90 DAYS, fight us in Court, 10 years (life!) in jail. He strong armed Allen, which a judge is not allowed to do, & treated my companies, which didn’t “plead,” VICIOUSLY. APPEALING!

IANAL but assume attacking the judge is a time-honored legal tactic.

@Jackie: I feel completely certain that Trump is thinking some version of: “If I can’t be president, it sure as hell isn’t going to be another Republican who wins.”

Because if another R won in the general, that would look bad for Trump.  But if a Dem wins, Trump can say “see, if I had won the primary, I would have won in the general election.”

    @Matt McIrvin:

Beyer is the only car-dealer-turned-politician I’ve heard of who seemed to turn out decent. My parents bought a Volvo from him.

When he ran for governor, Beyer took a principled stand and supported the personal property tax (AKA “car tax”) against his opponent’s pandering proposal to reduce it, knowing it was essential to funding local governments. It was doubly principled in Beyer’s case since he sold some pricey cars. He would have personally benefited from a car tax reduction.

Youngkin won because fuck poors.  Fuck the poors.  Are you hurting the poor, if not why not, fuck the poors.  I’m from VA we are social liberals here but god damn it get rid of social security.  Gay marriage yes, but social security must go.  Abortion yes but medicare kill it and hell fucking no!  We want a socially liberal full out plutocracy Clinton yes, Sanders no.  Fuck the poor!  Didn’t get into a top 10 school, fuck you work till you die and if you complain about it you are racist white trash, and fuck you.  Dare complain about it, go see HR and get fired and flip burgers and live on the streets and fuck you again.  You dare allow kids to compete with ours, fuck you and you should die and lets have a full fascist because fuck the poors and if you didn’t go to Yale you should be poor, and fuck you.

VA politics are just like that.  It’s a bunch of over educated social liberals who are more brutal than the Koch’s on economics.  That’s true for a lot of blue areas.  Youngkin knew to punch down and that’s what democrats here want.

@J R in WV: I’d be suspicious here: how did they manage to poke a hole in your lung while installing a chemo port? If it’s a “CVC” this is a possibility, but it should still be rare: see https://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatments-and-side-effects/planning-managing/tubes-lines-ports-catheters.html for instance.

An Internet troll just got convicted of trying to fool people into thinking they could vote by text in 2016, so that they would think they’d successfully voted and wouldn’t vote by normal means.

AFAICT, the reason for the delay is that the Trump DOJ didn’t try to prosecute this bozo, but the Biden Administration did.

Though I’ve been living across the Potomac for the past quarter-century, I’d lived even longer than that in Virginia, even now my home is less than an hour from the Wilson Bridge, and I’ve got plenty of family and friends on the Virginia side of the bridge, as well as in various places downstate.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I am doing OK so far.

I just found an on-the-road post about frog eggs, ferns and tadpoles on the Alain Chabot thread, whom I still miss when thinking of moss and frog eggs.

I know putting the anniversary posts together must have been a ton of work and want to thank everyone who helped!

My  chest tube was taken out,  but later on x-rays  determined I needed to have another one put in.  Bummer! So a couple of days more in the luxury CAMC hotel,  uh, er — hospital.
