Totally open thread.
I can’t believe someone in the White House leaked this!
“Yes we can!”
LOVE IT 💙💙💙💙💙💙💙🇺🇸
I deeply enjoyed the Obama/Biden memes and I welcome many more. The addition of Hillary and Kamala is welcome! LOL!
I’d bet all the many people TFG cheated over the years as a “businessman” are also quite enjoying this moment.
Yes. Keep these memes coming.
Okay, that was funny.

@rikyrah: you’re casting fire today!
@rikyrah: Karma, meet bitch.
But the overriding question is – will he be tried as an adult?
Did anyone actually get their indictment cake?
What’s on the menu for Arraignment day?
@rikyrah: Though it’s true that Hillary Clinton is the one person on Earth who would probably not have been held immune from criminal prosecution due to being the sitting President.
@rikyrah: That’s a nice tweet.
I celebrated with a Manhattan. It seemed like the adult beverage of choice, and it’s one of my favorites.
@JaySinWA: After all that buildup, the actual breaking news came too quickly for anyone to bake!
@rikyrah: White voters using pearl-clutching over ginned-up school concerns (Covid closures, CRT etc. in this case) to justify electing Conservative assholes, sadly, has a long history in this country. I’ll NEVER forgive VA voters for this shit. That election shouldn’t have even been close. White, Dem voters showed once again, why it’s almost impossible for anyone to rely on/trust us :(
And this coming right on top of Youngkin deciding that Virginia’s felons won’t have their voting rights restored anymore when they’ve served their time.
Christ, what an asshole.
I’m sure the next Dem governor will fix that, and if he has a Dem legislature they’ll fix it in the law this time, but it won’t make Youngkin any less of an asshole.
The Framers would not have condoned extending constitutional protections to President Hillary.
You should have also listened to rhapsody in blue while sipping your Manhattan.

Well worth a click.
@UncleEbeneezer: I seem to recall data analysis at the time that showed most of the people complaining about VA schools didn’t even have kids in the system. It’s all bullshit. As usual.
Youngkin is adept at being two-faced, dropping MAGA dog-whistles out of one side of his mouth and projecting a harmless fleece-vest dad vibe from the other.
Maybe his strategy is to lay low, wait for DeSantis to implode and swoop in as GOP savior. It’s not a bad strategy.
I was too busy watching Opening Day.
@rikyrah: That didn’t show well without the formatting and the images, so I’ll embed this here.
@rikyrah: When I followed your link to that fabulous pair of photos of Harris standing in the exact same spot as VP as she did as a little girl, I scrolled down, as one does, and saw a tweet from Jill Biden.
She’s in the Rose Garden, planting a new rose bush! It’s in honor of Cesar Chavez — apparently there is a variety named after him —and she is planting it with his granddaughter’s help.
We all hoped Jill would repair the Rose Garden, and here she is, starting this job with a big thumb stuck in Melania’s eye. Ha!
VP Harris’s mom’s parents just blow my mind. They were so incredibly forward thinking and open minded.
@Roger Moore: Mali Muso and I commend your choice in beverages.
Manhattan, for the first indictment.
What adult beverage goes with Georgia election interference indictment to come?
@JaySinWA: I got my indictment pie.
It was as good as it looked and the perfect complement to the indictment news.
@Roger Moore: Same. I may have had more than one.
He’s no fun:
It’s never RICO.

Wow! Talk about projection. The dividing of America has long since been done and not by Democrats.
@Roger Moore: A manhattan. Excellent choice for the moment.
@WaterGirl: I like this one too, from the Veep herself.
@UncleEbeneezer: I was too old. The only 2 of those I’ve seen are The Never Ending Story and Time Bandits.
@Redshift: Not for me! Ever hopeful.
I made the cherry filling and the pie crust the day before and put them in the fridge.
Yesterday afternoon, ever hopeful, I assembled the gallete and baked it. But I most certainly didn’t cut into it until the news dropped.
@Baud: True, there’s no mention of her prior to 1780 so obviously the law can’t apply to her.

Is there a single virtue now remaining amongst you? Is there one vice you do not possess?
Ye have no more religion than my horse. Gold is your God. Which of you have not bartered your conscience for bribes?”
I’d forgotten about the shake down of a children’s hospital. FUCK BLAGO!
@Alison Rose: Even better!
I think it’s so great that someone finally held Trump accountable for something because it will show Taibbi and the rest of the media ninnies to be wrong- nothing bad is going to happen to us as a country because Donald Trump gets mad at us.
He’ll just be a defendant. He’ll enter the big Justice Machine and get processed and everyone else can just go about their business. It’ll be fine.
Re: Glenn Youngkin’s win in Virginia.
Joe Biden carried Virginia in 2020 by 10, the biggest margin of victory for a Democrat since 1964. The following year Glenn Youngkin surprised people with a 2 point win. What made this 12 point swing?
There was clearly a relative dropoff among Democratic voters, just like there was the following year in New York and in Southern California. I have not seen any evidence that this dropoff was greater among white Democrats than among their Hispanic or Black counterparts.
Republicans came out in relatively greater numbers. This is not surprising. They had the best candidate they’d fielded in many years, and they were hungry in a way Democrats were not.
Some of the 12 point swing can be attributed to Independents who swung from Biden to Youngkin. Independents run about 32% of registered voters here.* If one tenth of the 32% switched, that’s over 6 pounts of the 12 point swing.
I think campaign quality made a difference in this race. Youngkin’s team ran an energetic and efficient campaign. All the Democrats I’ve talked to think that McAuliffe did not. And Republicans had one other advantage in 2021 that they did not have in 2020: Donald Trump was not on the ballot.
*Virginia does not register by party. This number comes from the frequent Wason Center polls of registered Virginia voters. It’s pretty consistent from poll to poll.
Exactly right. “Equal justice under law.”
Eyes on the prizes.
I hope one of the indictments reveals that TFG shot someone on Fifth Avenue.

Right. Because Democrats are the norm-breakers here.

J R in WV
I’m not commenting as much as I once did — I’m in the hospital, since Tuesday!
I had “minor” surgery that morning, to install a chemo port — but they also punctured my left lung! I’ve had a chest tube until this morning and just now another doctor came in to tell me the lung isn’t healed yet.
So they’re going to put in another chest tube in a few minutes. Not going home yet. And of course a week after I get home I’ll start a big old course of old fashioned Chemotherapy… yay!
So you all jackals think of me while you celebrate, please.
@Another Scott: Equal justice under law
I’d be in favor of “with greater power comes greater consequences”; the law being more severe for our “betters”.
@J R in WV:
I hope they didn’t charge you for that!

What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Elizabelle: Peach Schnapps? Or there’s probably a peach flavor of White Claw. Neither sound all that appealing though (and heaven knows TFG has been doing A LOT of that). The classic cocktail I most associate with the South is the Mint Julep and those are pretty great. There may be some peach themed cocktails out one could find with a little research. One could always do some sort of peach shrub and I could see that being delicious if done right.

Is our Democrats having fun?
Why yes, yes they is.
@J R in WV: I hope they are at least bringing you cake to celebrate.
@Betty Cracker: I never bought it as an excuse for VA voters. We (California) were pretty darn careful in keeping our schools closed for a long time for Covid safety too, but it didn’t keep us from re-electing Newsom in a landslide.

@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?: Hmmm. Peach schnapps and orange juice — in honor of TFG, spray tan addict, Sunshine State resident, and more deserving than most of orange prison garb.
Fuzzy Navel. Oh yeah. We used to drink those at the beach in the 80s …
@Geoduck: Yeah, that’s weird. Going for a Shawshank theme, I guess.
What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?
@Elizabelle: I’m not personally a fan of the fuzzy navel but if you like them it does seem 100% apropos. In the ’80s when I was a teenager though I probably would have thought them quite refreshing.
A Fuzzy Navel, of course. Peach schnapps for the Peach State, orange juice because, well, orange.
@J R in WV: ugh, that sucks. I hope you are out of there soon!
@Elizabelle: Lord, I hadn’t thought of that cocktail in YEARS, and now I’m realizing I do have the ingredients! (I don’t have orange juice, but I’ve got a bag of oranges I could juice, and peach schnapps leftover from some weird concoction my sister made.) Hmm! Maybe I’ll celebrate Indictment Day +1 with a Fuzzy Navel!
@What Have the Romans Ever Done for Us?: But mint juleps for when Mitch McConnell kicks. Fer sure.
NY Times reports he has not had anything to say on TFG’s indictment. (1) He is smarter than the average GOP. (2). He may be too upbeat about the news to carry off an interview.
Cake and Fuzzy Navels! And Manhattans, always.
@Betty Cracker: Possibly Jared is worried that Trump will throw him under the bus as part of some plea bargain.
You know, one of those “Sure, they had me for fraud, but they really wanted to know who sold classified secrets to the Saudis” situations that come up all the time in most families, and can make Thanksgivings so awkward.

“And we’re ok with it.”
DailyKos noted one of the most important parts of this: all of the Trump defenders and apologists never actually use the words “not guilty”. They all fucking know he did it, know he’s guilty as sin, know he’s a criminal…and either think he should be left alone because IOKIYR or because they’re so desperately afraid of the support he still has among the base they need to vote for them.
@Betty Cracker: My guess is that Youngkin will wait for 2028. For one thing, he’ll have some prestige on the line in this fall’s General Assembly elections, and right now the Democrats are looking good. This election won’t matter as much 4 years later than it will next year.
Plus, Youngkin was a strong retail campaigner, but that would not be that great an asset if he jumps in this year’s race. He will still infest every Republican county dinner he can for four years, and bank credits for campaigning with a couple dozen candidates next year, all while his aides compile the Mother of All Spreadsheets.
Wow! What I love is that a MAGA PAC is not only defending Medicare & Social Security*, they think that not doing so makes for a good attack point to demolish party rivals.
Truly Biden is a wizard.
*Also I love it when anyone attacks Honest Ron DeSantis
@Geminid: The risk of waiting is that someone other than Trump is the nominee, wins, and runs for reelection in 2028.
@Baud: Oh, yay!
You must not remember all the massive Free Blago/Free Edwards protests we held.
@mrmoshpotato: They really thought Trump was the fucking King. For life, apparently.
Republicans who seem to be smart enough not to be saying anything about the Trump indictment, at least at this moment:
Mitt Romney; haven’t seen anything from him. He’s already stated he did not vote for Trump in 2020.
List from the FTF NY Times:
John Thune (Senator, South Dakota; ambitious to replace McConnell one of these days)
Kristi Noem, Governor, South Dakota
Chris Sununu, Governor, New Hampshire
Larry Hogan, former governor, Maryland (which now has Democratic Governor Wes Moore — woo hoo!)
@J R in WV:
I’m so sorry to hear you are going through that. My sister just went through about a year of chemo- and immunotherapy plus radiation. She had a port, too, but no punctured lung! Wow, that’s rough. I’ll be keeping you in my thoughts while you’re undergoing all of this. Sister just got good news that she looks totally clear as of this week. She had triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive and deadly types of breast cancer. Chemo sucks but they perform miracles with it.
@Betty Cracker: This was on Political Wire this morning:
“Trump Launches Ads Attacking DeSantis”
New York Times: “Make America Great Again Inc., the super PAC supporting Mr. Trump’s candidacy, has begun running commercials for the first time, with a roughly $1.3 million ad buy on CNN and Fox News for a spot attacking Mr. DeSantis.”
@Baud: Sure, that’s a risk. But unless Youngkin can go all the way in next year’s nomination race, he’ll likely impair his chances for 2028. This coming primary season will be brutal.
And Youngkin’s a calculator, not an enthusiast. He may realize that Biden won’t be as easy to beat as a lot of Republicans think.

If a former Democratic President was indicted, do you think the MSM would let Democratic Politicians get away with saying nothing?
@Elizabelle: It’s smart ay not to talk about this indictment, because we don’t know what’s in it yet. Hew Hewitt was emphasizing this on his radio show this morning.
And Maryland Governor Wes Moore is a promising talent. I’m not sure, but I think he’s in his early 40s.
Also from Political Wire:
“When former President Donald Trump arrives for his first appearance in Manhattan Criminal Court next week, he will look up at a judge who has played a key role in several investigations involving those in Trump’s orbit,” CBS Newsreports.
“Judge Juan Merchan presided over the convictions and guilty plea last year of two Trump Organization companies, and their former chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg, one of Trump’s most trusted advisers. Merchan is also overseeing the ongoing criminal proceedings involving Steve Bannon, Trump’s former chief strategist and senior counselor in the White House who has pleaded not guilty to state fraud and money laundering charges.”
I’m sure this judge fits TFG’s definition of racist against him!😂😁😂

IANAL but assume attacking the judge is a time-honored legal tactic.

The Moar You Know
Sound to me moar like someone is fishing for one already at this stage of the game. They haven’t even seen the indictment yet!
@Jackie: I feel completely certain that Trump is thinking some version of: “If I can’t be president, it sure as hell isn’t going to be another Republican who wins.”
Because if another R won in the general, that would look bad for Trump. But if a Dem wins, Trump can say “see, if I had won the primary, I would have won in the general election.”
...now I try to be amused
When he ran for governor, Beyer took a principled stand and supported the personal property tax (AKA “car tax”) against his opponent’s pandering proposal to reduce it, knowing it was essential to funding local governments. It was doubly principled in Beyer’s case since he sold some pricey cars. He would have personally benefited from a car tax reduction.
@rikyrah: Stupidity knows no bounds.
Youngkin won because fuck poors. Fuck the poors. Are you hurting the poor, if not why not, fuck the poors. I’m from VA we are social liberals here but god damn it get rid of social security. Gay marriage yes, but social security must go. Abortion yes but medicare kill it and hell fucking no! We want a socially liberal full out plutocracy Clinton yes, Sanders no. Fuck the poor! Didn’t get into a top 10 school, fuck you work till you die and if you complain about it you are racist white trash, and fuck you. Dare complain about it, go see HR and get fired and flip burgers and live on the streets and fuck you again. You dare allow kids to compete with ours, fuck you and you should die and lets have a full fascist because fuck the poors and if you didn’t go to Yale you should be poor, and fuck you.
VA politics are just like that. It’s a bunch of over educated social liberals who are more brutal than the Koch’s on economics. That’s true for a lot of blue areas. Youngkin knew to punch down and that’s what democrats here want.
@J R in WV: Thinking about you, and stay strong. I also appreciated your comments.
@J R in WV: I’d be suspicious here: how did they manage to poke a hole in your lung while installing a chemo port? If it’s a “CVC” this is a possibility, but it should still be rare: see https://www.cancer.org/treatment/treatments-and-side-effects/planning-managing/tubes-lines-ports-catheters.html for instance.
God bless you for this.
@SiubhanDuinne: A Peach Bellini. Includes champagne, so just the thing.
@Elizabelle: 3) McConnell is way sicker than they’re letting on and doesn’t even know.
@eversor: You know, I also get pissed off at liberals who express support for putting drug testing and work requirements on social programs, but if what you said were actually true, Youngkin would have won by 20% not 2%.
@Old School: It worked for him in the Trump University case. He suffered no consequences.
