BREAKING: Former President Donald Trump is facing multiple charges of falsifying business records, including at least one felony, AP sources say. https://t.co/LbA6WIEaz3
— The Associated Press (@AP) March 31, 2023
… He will be formally arrested and arraigned Tuesday in his hush money case, setting the scene for the historic, shocking moment when a former president is forced to stand before a judge to hear the criminal charges against him.
The indictment remained sealed and the specific charges were not immediately known, but details were confirmed by people who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss information that isn’t yet public.
The streets outside the courthouse where the arraignment will unfold were calm Friday compared with earlier in the week. There were no large-scale demonstrations for or against Trump, though tourists stopped to take selfies and throngs of reporters and police officers remained assembled.
When Trump turns himself in, he’ll be booked mostly like anyone else facing charges, mug shot, fingerprinting and all. But he isn’t expected to be put in handcuffs; he’ll have Secret Service protection and will almost certainly be released that same day…
The funny thing is that Trump seems to truly believe he’s still in charge of this whole game. That his truth social posts had cowed investigators into submission. He’s just…he’s just so fucking dumb. https://t.co/O1evryZq0V

Can’t blame Graham for his tears — all those hours of trudging around mediocre golf courses, laughing at bad jokes, wasted! He’s not a young man, how is he supposed to compete against the new generation of feral GOP coat-holders all clamoring for a new host?…
It appears that Lindsey Graham, who fought all the way to SCOTUS (and lost) to avoid testifying before a special grand jury probing whether Trump meddled in the 2020 election in Georgia, is unraveling.
He was on the verge of tears on Fox News last night. https://t.co/wLnk8EPFKZ

Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr. and Ron DeSantis have all claimed Alvin Bragg is "Soros-backed" or aligned since the news of the indictment dropped.
In reality, Soros has “has never met or spoken to Alvin Bragg,” according to a CNBC story from last week.https://t.co/UoCI1R1B4o

I specifically want this to happen as part of an extended effort to delay his trial for as long as possible. Ideally, Trump is convicted a week after the election & a week before his heart gives out https://t.co/QUQKAqkwPM

I dunno, if they didn’t want him to be indicted, maybe the GOP shouldn’t have nominated a crook to run for President.
Ken
I can’t see a plea deal happening, since those normally involve the defendant standing in front of a judge, admitting guilt, and confessing remorse; and that’s not something Trump would do. But it is fun to speculate who he’d incriminate as part of a plea bargain.
Jeffro
I am still recovering from my much-more-than-mild disappointment that I was traveling (and therefore, AWAY FROM MY BOTTLE OF TRUMP INDICTMENT DAY CHAMPAGNE THAT I’VE BEEN SAVING SINCE FOREVER) when Indictment Day finally happened.
However, I made it back home two hours ago. Bottoms up, peeps!!
mvr
@Jeffro: Having the bottle w dinner that we bought last night for the occasion but then decided to go out instead.
My substantive point is that all the talk of how shocking this is really misses what is shocking. It should have been perfectly predictable that someone who commits crimes in public and shows no respect for the law eventually winds up in legal trouble.
The only surprising thing is how long it took.
Kay
So true.
mvr
@mvr: Also, I believe in innocent until proven guilty as a legal matter. But I also believe in the things I see, and that means I can be glad this guy is finally paying the price for some of what everyone knows he did, even while thinking the courts should do their thing in the appropriate way, granting him that status until he is convicted.
Shalimar
Republicans are going to be so sad when George Soros dies. They’re gonna have to pick a new evil Jew.
No, wait. They still blame Hugo Chavez for things and he has been dead for 10 years. Ditto with Acorn, deceased 12 years. God the MAGA base are gullbile morons.
Jeffro
I just want to say one last time* (prompted by that second-to-last tweet about trump cutting a plea deal) that I still just cannot shake the image/dream/hope/whatever of trump sitting at that classic beat-up wooden table in a police interrogation room, confessing to everything** in an effort to avoid being thrown in the slammer and losing his entire fortune***.
* I swear
**yes EVERYTHING: which GOP elected officials are compromised by Putin (besides him), everything he has on Graham and Dershowitz, his many tax scams, what Putin told him in Helsinki, and more
***yes I know he doesn’t have a fortune but he thinks he does, somewhere

Scout211
@Ken: I can see him plead to a (much) lesser crime. But only after all the delays and filings have played themselves out over a long period of months
He would have to pay a fine but not have to do any jail time. He could pretend he beat the charges and outsmarted the Soros-back DA.
But since IANAL, I’m just speculating and have no real clue how this will go. I’m just happy that it’s going.
MagdaInBlack
I’m pretty intrigued with the Ragnorok Lobster tweet and his suggestion trump is going to implicate every GOP leader when he starts running his mouth. Won’t that be fun!
p.a.
Heh, he’s stupid enough to start off trying to give up his associates at the time to get off/lighten the charges. That would have a great effect on his current entourage.
Shalimar
@Scout211: Trump settled the Trump University case quietly after swearing he never would. Ditto with the case against his charity. The only reason he has never plea bargained a criminal case is because this is his first indictment.
Roger Moore
The whole thing about “if they can come for Trump, they can come for you” is just so bizarre to me. It’s like the quote about how a government powerful enough to give you everything you need is powerful enough to take everything you have. Well duh. One of the most fundamental roles of government is to provide justice, and that means providing justice even when the criminal is rich and powerful. In other words, the government has to be able to take on the rich and powerful and take everything they have just in order to qualify for the most basic level of function.
Jeffro
PS: lost in all the trump hubbub: a major GOP fundraiser just got found guilty on several counts of sex trafficking minors:

Any guesses where else besides MAGAs I am hearing anti-Semitic Soros conspiracy theories?
bbleh
I may be wrong, but I think this is the dam finally breaking. The stories won’t stop. Next will be the details of the indictment. And then there will be the usual everything-and-the-kitchen-sink attempts at delay and obfuscation, which I expect will be dealt with quickly and brutally since TFG is already busy self-sabotaging with his public comments about the judge. And hard on the heels of this indictment is expected to come a Fulton County indictment (unless the GA Lege manages to torpedo it somehow). And then there’s the Carroll suit, and the NY State suit. And looming behind but approaching inexorably like a thunderstorm, the twin investigations of Jack “Sure That’s His Real Name” Smith.
It’s going to be Christmas for months for the media. Live by the sword etc ..
Oh, and as to pleading out, I can’t see it. What would he have to gain? The penalties here, even if it’s successfully upgraded to a felony, are comparatively minor. “Trump Admits Guilt In Criminal Case” would be far worse imo.

I might do it just to see if my guesses are correct.
One thing’s for sure: when I told them back in late 2015 that if they didn’t do their best to kneecap trump and stand up for actual conservative principles*, he would keep leading them further down the spiral and every six months, they’d be in a place they could never have imagined just a half-year prior (if that makes sense). Just endless debasement and embracing ever more degrading acts by this corrupt goon.
Well, here we are, something like fifteen(!) of those cycles later and they’re not exactly burning up my phone lines to tell me I was right all along.
White male supremacy is a helluva drug. And the inability to admit that one was wrong, buttressed 24/7 by the FoxBubble in my dad’s case and RWNJ blogs in my brother’s case, is stronger than steel.

Just watched Rachel Maddow; she covered Spiro Agnew resigning from office. Interestingly, to avoid prosecution, Agnew agreed to never run for office again.

More bad news for FAUX News! Per WaPo:
“A judge undercut key arguments in Fox News’s defense against a $1.6 billion defamation suit Friday, ruling the network cannot dispute that it aired false, harmful statements about an election-technology company when the case goes to trial next month.
The decision by Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric M. Davis to reject requests from Fox News and parent company Fox Corporation to dismiss the case had been widely anticipated.
But legal experts said the specific ruling was a blow for Fox — and an encouraging sign going into trial for Dominion Voting Systems, which argues that Fox unfairly smeared it with wild allegations about its role in the 2020 election…”
