I was in a 2.5 hour zoom meeting last night, but Mr DAW had CNN on in the next room. I couldn’t make out what Trump was saying, but I could hear the whine of his voice, and I could feel blood pressure rising. I’d forgotten what a relief it was when he was mostly out of sight or hearing. I don’t know if I can take two years of a compaign.

How many of them are not like that?
It really pisses me off, how much coverage they give to the superficial back-and-forth, without even bothering to find out for themselves what’s really at stake, let alone informing their viewers and readers.
Biden was just awesome in that clip. Fucking awesome.
Yes, more of this, please – maybe if reporters get pantsed more often like that, they’ll be forced to occasionally do some reporting beyond who’s up and who’s down. And in that ‘who’s up and who’s down’ coverage, the ‘whos’ are always just the political figures, not the actual people of America, which renders it meaningless.
ETA: Dem Senators have pointed out that all but 40 pages of this 300+ page bill are giveaways to the fossil fuel industries, but I certainly don’t see the reporters bringing that up much. That would be a gimme, they wouldn’t even have to work, just have an intern scan through the bill to verify that it was true, and pester Qevin with questions about that. Do they? I doubt it.
zhena gogolia
@Dorothy A. Winsor: If you’d heard what he was saying, it would be stroke territory.

As for the general election, I think the “Town Hall” did not help and probably hurt Trump. A report by Politico Playbook quoted a Biden official saying that the event distilled into one hour enough material for a year’s worth of attack ads.

So Ohio is having a special election in August (low turnout momth) to restrict our ability to amend the state constitution. If it passes we will have to collect signatures from all of the 88 counties (not 44 as currently required) and then win by 60% ( not 50%.) They say they are protecting us from special interests. At best I could see them forcing CNN and Fox to stop calling themselves news programs if they didn’t adhere to certain standards.

@Eolirin: Cable uses the regulated airwaves too – satellite up/down link frequencies, etc.
Yeah, it’s a bit of a stretch – especially compared to radio and broadcast TV – but they do use limited spectrum that is regulated.
Popehat reminds us to be concerned about the US government having a veto on what people can talk about on TV, etc., (the power is invariably used to silence the marginalized). I don’t know the solution, but I think the bit about licensing and “operating in the public interest” needs to be taken much, much more seriously by regulators.
Cheers,

even if they own their own satellites, they still have to get it from there to their station thru FCC controlled airwaves. Their broadcasts use a dedicated part of airwaves just as cell phones do. And it’s been years since they started neglecting their requirements to carry local broadcasts in order to keep their exceptions alive. They have been moving the goalposts for decades and now are full blown propaganda tools for foreign and domestic terrorists. At what point do you decide to start to claw back? after the next J6? When CNN starts running the all DJT for President channel?
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Eolirin:
That’s a good point!
Eolirin
@Another Scott: Are they directly holding those licenses or are they using other people’s access? It gets messy complicated and could break a bunch of important things if it’s the latter. We don’t want to take down the internet or stop telcoms from being able to operate because some part of it flows over a satellite uplink or cell network, and laws need to be applied evenly.
Steeplejack
I watched the CNN Trump town hall last night, as well as some of CNN’s panel discussions afterwards (one group with Jake Tapper, another with Anderson Cooper). David Smith has a pretty good (free) article in The Guardian recapping the town hall.
I will say that I don’t think the audience was uniformly “roaring” in “thunderous” support of Trump. There was a lot of clapping and some yelling at various points in the event, usually at some predictably asinine Trump zinger or a meaningless slogan (“We need to protect our borders!”), but the crowd reaction shots showed quite a few people not clapping or yelling. I was surprised to see that.
It was definitely a Republican crowd. Some of the audience members were allowed to read questions for Trump after a brief intro, and a lot of them were “undecided voter (but voted for Trump in 2020).” 🙄 The questions were mostly bland, and of course Trump used them merely as a launching point into more word salad. I was surprised that no one asked him about Ron DeSantis. Trump did mention “DeSanctimonious” at one point and said basically that he was already finished. One little twerp brought up bump stocks in his question about “restoring gun rights that have already been taken away.” To my surprise, Trump said he agreed with the NRA that bump stocks were a nothingburger.
The panels afterwards featured a lot of backing and filling to do damage control (on behalf of CNN, not Trump), even by the Republican panelists—with the notable exception of Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL). Complete Trump ass-kisser who still refused to answer the yes/no question of whether the 2020 election was fairly decided. Are white commenters here allowed to use the term “house Negro”? Asking for a friend. They all criticized Trump except for Donalds and one old white guy “Republican consultant” who basically said, “You may not have liked it, but he could win.” Oof.
My overall sense was that the CNN brass thought the town hall was a genius idea but the worker bees did not, based on how they handled the aftermath.
And, yes, Trump was predictably awful, awful, awful. I agree with commenters above who are dreading “news coverage” of his campaign.
Goku (aka Amerikan Baka)
@Gin & Tonic:
I so feel sorry for that poor guy who was arrested. It’ll be interesting to see how Modi reacts
Matt McIrvin
@Soprano2: Lots of theme parks did that in those days. After complaints some moved to attaching them with wires for a short time. (Today’s bumpers won’t allow that.)
But putting it on the driver’s side window feels more like an attack or threat than a bid for free advertising.
Eolirin
@artem1s: This isn’t how internet based media works though. And cable TV would switch over to using fiber uplink if forced, assuming using a bundled pass through provider that holds licenses but isn’t actually responsible for content doesn’t work. We don’t want to break the cell network because people use it to transmit specific kinds of information. If you’re going to force Verizon and AT&T to do content monitoring in order to keep their licenses we are going to have huge problems and it’d be extremely easy to set up that uplink to work through a third party. The final mile distribution not relying on a direct license makes yanking those licenses nearly impossible without breaking everything about our modern communication models.

@O. Felix Culpa: Your comment has a very “lets you and him fight” vibe. :-)
James E Powell
@Dorothy A. Winsor:

satby
