Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Historically it was a little unusual for the president to be an incoherent babbling moron.

“In the future, this lab will be a museum. do not touch it.”

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

A sufficient plurality of insane, greedy people can tank any democratic system ever devised, apparently.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

Insiders who complain to politico: please report to the white house office of shut the fuck up.

Well, whatever it is, it’s better than being a Republican.

So it was an October Surprise A Day, like an Advent calendar but for crime.

This country desperately needs a functioning fourth estate.

Sitting here in limbo waiting for the dice to roll

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

The media handbook says ā€œcontroversialā€ is the most negative description that can be used for a Republican.

GOP baffled that ā€˜we don’t care if you die’ is not a winning slogan.

You can’t attract Republican voters. You can only out organize them.

They fucked up the fucking up of the fuckup!

Nothing says ā€˜pro-life’ like letting children go hungry.

That’s my take and I am available for criticism at this time.

Relentless negativity is not a sign that you are more realistic.

Balloon Juice, where there is always someone who will say you’re doing it wrong.

We’re watching the self-immolation of the leading world power on a level unprecedented in human history.

Related, this was a fun read this morning:Ā  The FAFO for Trump’s personal attorneys.

Trump’s Plan to Save Himself: Scapegoat His Coup Lawyers

DONALD TRUMP’S ATTORNEYS are preparing a legal plan to shovel blame onto the lawyers who aided his attempt to overturn the 2020 election, two sources familiar with the matter tell Rolling Stone.

Trump is on the cusp of being indicted over Jan. 6 and its surrounding events, and if the case goes to trial, his current legal team is preparing an ā€œadvice of counselā€ argument, attempting to pull blame away from the former president for any possible illegal activity. Plans for such a defense have been percolating since last year, the two sources say.

    . . .

In the aftermath of Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, Trump had an armada of lawyers — some officially representing him, and some simply aligned with him — spreading unhinged conspiracy theories and pushing states to reverse the results:Ā Rudy Giuliani. Sidney Powell. John Eastman. The listĀ goes onĀ and on.

The attorneys were acting on Trump’s behalf. But inĀ thisĀ legal strategy, Team Trump would argue it was the lawyers leading Trump, rather than the other way around.

ā€œIt is an argument the [former] president likes, and the team is on board with it,ā€ one Trump adviser bluntly says, then somewhat ominously adding: ā€œJohn [Eastman] and Rudy [Giuliani] gave a lot of counsel … Other people can decide how sound it was.ā€

Well, my last political prediction in 2020 was that Napoleon would rise from the grave, conquer the United States, establish a benevolent North American empire ruled from New Orleans, and drive 98% of American lawyers insane by forcing them to switch from common law to civil law.

But that didn’t happen, so now I don’t make predictions anymore.

True, but I guess it has been successful in the past. And Trump has never been a truth-teller. Whatever lie works to his advantage, he will spew quite easily

    From the article:

Several lawyers in Trump’s ever-shifting legal orbit spent time both this and last year quietly studying past high-profile cases involving this particular line of defense. The attorneys tried to game out how such an argument would fare in front of a judge or a jury.

I wonder which high-profile cases were successful in blaming their attorneys for bad advice.

Since we’re discussing Trump and his enablers, Sam Alito, everybody. He is not happy with You People thinking anybody has control over SCOTUS.

Last week, Justice Samuel Alito returned to a favored forum — theĀ Wall Street JournalĀ op-ed page. For decades, the page has been an invigorating mix of insightful essays, right-wing boilerplate, and occasional conspiracy theories. This morning’s headlines include ā€œClimate Change Obsession Is a Real Mental Disorderā€ and ā€œFDR Made the Depression Great Again.ā€ Now theĀ JournalĀ appears to be hosting a new genre: historical fiction.

In an interview, Alito declared, ā€œI know this is a controversial view, but I’m willing to say it. No provision in the Constitution gives them the authority to regulate the Supreme Court — period.ā€ The mix of self-congratulation and tendentiousness was distinctly Alito’s, familiar to anyone who read theĀ DobbsĀ ruling.

This ā€œcontroversial viewā€ is wrong as history and law. It also marks a startling intervention by a justice in an ongoing legislative fight. Alito spoke soon after the Senate Judiciary Committee advanced legislation that would require the Court to adopt a binding code of ethics, while imposing stricter rules for recusal and disclosures for gifts and travel. Were such a law to pass, surely it would wind up at the justice’s desk.

Alito’s pronouncement ignores the long history of congressional regulation of the Supreme Court.

cain posted about this a few days ago:

Not sure if y’all are aware – but India has limited exports of non-basmati rice because of the torrential monsoon season.

Rice especially sona masoori is super important to us in south India. There is panick buying going on because nobody is sure how long this ban is going to last. I’ll say that if hte future is that these bans become common place – the pressure is going to be on especially by Indians and asians to put pressure on working on the climate problem.

As stated, climate change is going to have a big impact on our food supply, and that means our culture as well.. Shit like a Georgia peach festival is goign to go down in flames because there wont be any peaches.

Climate change should be the biggest issue for conservatism – but these folks are just doing late stage capitalism.

By the time they get it, they either won’t give a shit because they are going home to Jesus, want to accelerate it because they think Jesus is coming or be happy because minorities are gonna get it in the shorts.

    School spree-killing averted? Seems possible.

Police in Tennessee have shot an armed man who they say tried and failed to enter a Jewish school in Memphis before firing his weapon outside it.

No-one at the Margolin Hebrew Academy-Feinstone Yeshiva of the South was injured in Monday’s incident, which began after noon (18:00 BST). The suspect was later stopped by police and shot as he exited his vehicle. He is in hospital in critical condition.

A lawmaker representing the area said the gunman was a former student.

Congressman Steve Cohen also alleged the man was himself Jewish, though he did not specify the source of his information. “I am pleased the academy had effective security and that the police acted quickly to protect students,” Mr Cohen, a Democrat, said in a statement.

A spokesperson for the Secure Community Network, an organisation that works with the school, also said the suspect was Jewish, according to CNN. They called the incident “personal in nature”.

Students at the co-educational school, which serves primary and secondary students, are still on summer vacation, and it is unclear how many people were on campus at the time.

In a statement to the WHBQ local station, the school said the suspect could not gain entry, had a “brief confrontation” with a contract worker and fired at the worker while retreating.

Memphis police chief CJ Davis said officers had “mitigated a potential mass shooting situation”. The suspect was armed with a handgun, assistant police chief Don Crowe said at a news conference.

The man is said to have fled the scene in a maroon pickup truck with California licence plates, but police tracked the vehicle to the adjoining city of Bartlett shortly thereafter. The driver got out of the vehicle still armed, and a Memphis police officer fired his weapon and struck the man, Mr Crowe said.

    More charges:

Former attorney general candidate Matt DePerno and ex-state Rep. Daire Rendon are facing criminal charges for their alleged roles in an effort to access Michigan voting machines after the 2020 presidential election.
Special prosecutor D.J. Hilson confirmed the charges Tuesday afternoon, saying his investigation into the handling of tabulators in Michigan was “ongoing and not over,” which could mean other individuals will be charged.
“The charging decision was the result of a thorough decision-making process by an independent citizens grand jury,” Hilson said in a statement. “This citizens grand jury carefully listened to the sworn testimony and analyzed the evidence as required by law and returned a decision to indict each of the defendants.”
