Rather than counting sheep so everyone who wants to can fall asleep, I’ll start you off with another question, which you can absolutely ignore and instead talk about whatever you please.
The weather is getting colder, at least for most of us. What’s your favorite cold-weather comfort food?
And a bonus late-night Henry. He looks a little sad.
Open thread.
Steeplejack
It’s not always my go-to, but lately I’ve been craving a big bowl of chili.
Alison Rose
Minestrone soup. Haven’t had it in forever because my digestive system sucks, but I used to have it at least a couple days a week, especially in fall and winter.
Jay
#1 Cabbage Roll Soup
#2 Beef Stew with buttered French Bread for dipping
#3 6 Tier Lasagna

Fuckin’ white people.

@HumboldtBlue:
Channeling your inner Hannibal Lecter?
Oh, wait…
SiubhanDuinne
Pot roast, heavy on the onions and carrots.
HumboldtBlue
@SiubhanDuinne:
“Can we play dead now?”
Also this:
prostratedragon
All of that’s good. (Except white people. Don’t know about that.) But there’s also spaghetti and meat sauce, which I had tonight.
BethanyAnne
Witch: *stirring* eye of bat, tail of newt, pinto beans
Me: ugh, not Hex-Mex again
I’ve been craving some beef stroganoff. Not my usual go-to in the winter (that was Mom’s chili), but it’s what I want now.
I just got done with a good book, Harrow the Ninth, and I’m eating a little, and then to bed.
SpaceUnit
Chili. Paired with tater tots and blue cheese dressing for dipping sauce.
ETA: Okay, now I’m going to have to make chili this weekend.
Alison Rose
@West of the Rockies: 🤣🤣🤣
Splitting Image
Spaghetti baked with tomatoes and grated cheese melted into goo, with oregano and basil.
Oddly enough, I always end up with half an onion left over whether I add onions to the spaghetti or not.
Tony Jay
Big bowl of Irish Stew with crusty white bread.
Bigger bowl of pork won ton with noodles
Biggest possible bowl of chicken and barley soup with lots of pepper and crusty white bread.
Bacon and egg butties. About a dozen.
neabinorb
to keep it simple I like a big pot of baked sticky rice with garlic, with maybe some steamed brussels sprouts if I’m ambitious, seasoned to taste.
Jay
@Tony Jay:
Your poor arteries.
My God Man, add some romaine or spinach, some tomato and black pepper. And a good Brown Ale. Maybe a Porter.
BethanyAnne
Oh! And San Francisco garlic noodles. I’ve been seriously thinking about making a batch Saturday.

Split pea soup made with chicken broth, ham hocks, carrots, onions, celery, garlic, bay leaf and thyme… wonderfulness.

Rebel’s Dad

@Ascap_scab: Yes!
sab
@Tony Jay: Chicken and barley soup? Seriously? That’s edible?
piratedan
something simple: white chicken chili, amped up with some Hatch 505.
Mel
Chicken potpie, with apple raisin pie for dessert.
Manyakitty
Henry is definitely channeling my ennui. Meanwhile, Asimov is snuggled up next to me and purring so loudly I’m sure you can all hear. ❤️
I make an assortment of tuna casseroles. Also spaghetti with meat sauce, pierogi (got my recipe from a Ukrainian church in Akron), chicken soup, potato latkes, macaroni and cheese, pasta, potatoes, breads, you get the idea.
Mel
@Rebel’s Dad: How is school going? Hope you are having a great semester!
Mel
@SiubhanDuinne: Oh, that sounds so good! Served over some egg noodles, that’s my childhood “Saturday dinner at Grandma’s” happy food!
Mel
@Manyakitty: Leonard is purring and CoCo is making bread on my arm. Happy kitties now that the electric blanket has made its yearly appearance!
Manyakitty
@Mel: nice!!!
NotMax
Oh one more.
Thick Manhattan clam chowder (with caraway seeds added).
lowtechcyclist
Meat loaf, using the recipe on the box of Lipton Beefy Onion Soup packets.
And chili. Good any time of year, but particularly during the cold weather.
RevRick
I associate comfort foods as having one of the following characteristics:
1) childhood memories. Peanut butter and jelly sandwich, oatmeal with honey or molasses, spaghetti and meatballs, Thanksgiving dinner
2). texture/flavor. Almost ripe bananas. A ripe Bartlett pear. A medium rare burger. A cream cheese and poppyseed bagel with lox. A ripe, homegrown tomato.
3). warmth. My wife Judie makes great soups: lentil, split pea, and chicken and barley. Swedish meatballs.
mrmoshpotato
@Steeplejack: Mmmmmm
My brother made turkey chili with jalapenos and “hot chili beans” a couple weeks ago. It was most excellent.
mrmoshpotato
@Jay: Mmmmm beef stew.
mrmoshpotato
I love a good pot roast in cold weather. Hearty vegetables, slow cooked beef, crusty bread for dipping.
mrmoshpotato
@Tehanu:
The thicker, the better!
Rachel Bakes
Bolognese, soup with homemade bread, any braised really. Lots of tea! (And way too many sweets baked to go along with the tea)
Gvg
Chocolate?
The blanket has folded in a way that looks like Henry has a friend. I thought it was a picture of two dogs at first.
I need to not eat for comfort. I gain weight in the colder months.
artem1s
I like to roast a chicken with garlic and lemon then use the drippings for mushroom and barley soup.

Get out of bed
Check bottom of double boiler, 2 inches of water should be there. Turn on heat under
Top of double boiler: 2 cups of water, 1 cup of ‘old-fashioned rolled oats’, pinch of salt, heaping tablespoonful brown sugar, handful of raisins.
Put top of double boiler atop bottom, cover, turn down heat to ‘simmer’. Turn on computer. Read your e-mails, the comments the jackaltariat added over the night, the morning news ….
Dish yourself up big bowl of oatmeal. Put milk on a bit at a time. Enjoy the contrast in your mouth of hot oatmeal and cold milk.
Set out into the world, sufficiently fueled up and ballasted down.
Or just take an after-breakfast nap ;-)
RevRick
@Gvg: For me that would be dark chocolate
LiminalOwl
Black bean or lentil soup.
yellowdog
@Tehanu: Marry me!
randy khan
Pot roast. And about half of it is the way it smells while it’s cooking.
Uncle Jeffy
Mrs. UJ and I came up with a list: minestrone, pot roast w/veggies, chicken chili w/white beans & hominy, and almost any chili from the Marlboro Chili Cookbook.
WaterGirl
@Gvg: Can you see the dog head on the blanket, which is actually a totally flat dog made of two layers of blanket without stuffing and a 3-dimensional dog head?
it was Tucker’s absolute favorite and now that Tucker is gone, it’s Henry’s favorite friend.
