This is why I hate Muskboy, because before him, while twitter could be a dumpster fire, there was still some fun going on.
Tonight Elmo reminded us of that and I can’t stop laughing. Poor Elmo:
It started innocently enough
Elmo is just checking in! How is everybody doing?
— Elmo (@elmo) January 29, 2024
And it went quickly off the rails:

This is a late night open thread. I’m off to read some more of Elmo tweets. (And fuck you muskie)
cain
All the younger Millennials who grew up on Elmo commenting about not wanting to be adults anymore. :D
West of the Rockies
Does Musk go by Elmo on X these days?
TaMara
@cain: I’m trying not to spoil my mental health break by wondering why the hell Elmo is on twitter anyway
ETA: Until tonight, I didn’t realize all the characters were on it
cain
Speaking of twitter – here is the folks for Colorado district high5ing each other for a having been arrested like they got the best merit badge. I’m like wtf …

Good-bye, ad-free Prime video (unless you pony up some extra change monthly).
cain
@TaMara: It was pretty cute responses.
NotMax
Fickle Me Elmo.

Wave Function Collapse
TaMara, with all due respect, why do you hate a noble torpedo-shaped game fish?
(I’ll also point out that actual Muskie’s know how to keep their yap shut far better than the subject of your post.)
Jackie
@NotMax: Any way to fast forward through?
West of the Rockies
@TaMara:
So the Elmo is the Sesame one…
I’m having a dense night and am just not getting the joke. I mean, I get that the responses are directed at Musk. They just seem a little tame. I must just be obtuse this evening.
TaMara
@West of the Rockies: Oh, no, it’s that people are answering him honestly…letting him know, mostly that this adulting thing is hard, etc
Some responses got so intense, Sesame Street weighed in with mental health links.
But for the most part, gentle humor at sweet Elmo asking them how they re doing
Hence the Elmo is never going to ask that question again quote tweets

@Jackie:
I have MAX and Peacock black Friday deals, so cheap, with ads and the ads are both ridiculous and not terribly intrusive. Mostly ads for shows on each streamer.
Don’t know how prime will be – if it’s anything like FreeVee – mostly an insurance commercial followed by ads for new shows on Prime.

Elmo is like 40 now, who is the Gen Z sesamebrat?
West of the Rockies
@TaMara:
Thanks, TaMara. I really misread the joke. I thought the response were jabs at Elon/Elmo Musk. My funny bone is apparently on the fritz tonight.
Quadrillipede
Elmo is functionally immortal, so his physical age might not be usefully comparable to a human being’s…

How am I doing? Tired!
Good night, BJ peeps. Rest well, if it’s yer bed time. :)

While I’m here, thank you to whoever posted Ebert’s review of Shoah the other day. Not sure I’m psychologically prepared to watch it at the moment, but this exchange I found quite profoundly moving (emphasis is mine):
cain
@Quadrillipede:
May I recommend ’12th Fail’ on Hulu ? It’s a great feel good movie based on true events in Hindi (with translation) also some great insights on the reality of living in India.
There is a similar theme where you must succeed because if you do it is a win for all of us
Brachiator
@Quadrillipede:
Where was the review posted? I would like to read it again. Shoah is a monumental and difficult film. But very much worth watching.
Brachiator
@cain:
This looks like great fun. Unfortunately I don’t have Hulu. I may have to sign up, just to watch it, although I hate going through that. I wish that all the streaming services had a quick rent option.
Quadrillipede
@Brachiator: I can’t remember exactly which thread, but this is Ebert’s review:
Quadrillipede
@cain: Sounds interesting, thanks — I don’t have Hulu atm, but I’ll see if I can find it on any of my current video aggregators…
Leto
@NotMax: our renewal was this month, but we forgot about it so it auto-renewed. We’re both really pissed about it. Next Jan we’re out. I’m already paying for your shit service sans ads, but you’re going to wonder why pirating is shooting back up. Ok then.
NotMax
@Jackie
Standard practice on streaming services is to disable ability for fast Forwarding through ads.
Ceci n est pas mon nym
This made me google “Elmo twitter” which turned up many articles such as this one, which gives a sampling of some of the responses that might have overwhelmed poor little Elmo.
And one of the posts on that page led me to tiny Big Bird.
I’m going back to sleep before I fall down a deep, deep Sesame Street rabbit hole I won’t be able to escape.
