For those who don’t do twitter, here’s how the Susan Collins story I saw last week framed:
GOP Sen. Susan Collins says she will not endorse former President Trump, even if he becomes the Republican Party’s nominee for president.
Here’s the next sentence, which totally belies the first part. Look for the weasel words in bold below.
Asked if she could see herself endorsing Trump if he wins the nomination, Collins replied: “I do not at this point.”

Same thing here. (The Hill)
Title: Collins, leading Senate GOP centrist, won’t endorse Trump in 2024
Except she didn’t actually say NO. She essentially said “At this time, I do not see myself endorsing trump if he wins the election.”
I don’t know if I’m more pissed off that Susan Collins is such a weasel, or that the media is so awful in their reporting of it. In their reporting of everything!
Oh, and another quote from the Hill article.
The highly respected Maine senator was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump on the impeachment charge of inciting insurrection during his second Senate trial in 2021.
Highly respected by whom????

Insidious, ain’t it? I’ve noticed in my own speaking or writing a need for conscious effort to keep those little demon phrases from being automatic. This is not offered as an excuse for Collins — maybe the contrary — just an observation that a little sliding can go a long way.

I suppose the republicans might offer someone worse and she …..never mind. I won’t dare the universe to provide proof it’s possible, but Collins would probably argue that Biden is worse, and she has to support Trump. Not legitimately worse.
She must be respected in her state or they wouldn’t keep reelecting her.

I hope she realizes that with her vote to convict that she’s not going to be able to survive in Trump world – so even if she does endorse him – he’s going to ratfuck her. He’ll be out for revenge.

With all due respect to the Mainers here, they had a chance to bounce Susan last election. With a moderate Democrat who was Minority Leader/Speaker of the Assembly (not sure which it was). But no, they voted for that piece of shit Collins again.

she’s the worst. she just is. can’t wait for Collins to retire, but sadly the only way she’s going to go is by voting her useless ass out, because she has it so, so good in the Senate. Reporters fawn around her, everyone chases her vote (even though it’s almost always going to end up with the GOP), she’s got plenty of staff and a comfortable office to do all the actual work…it’s a very easy life. And she’s failing her state and the country.

@Jackie: Maine just has a lot of Independents. Their other Senator gets elected as an Independent and caucuses with the Democrats.
Maine’s 2020 election had an unusual amount of swing voters. Biden won with 435,000 votes to Donald Trump’s 369,000, but Collins won with 417,000 votes to Gideon’s 347,000; an Independent got 40,000 votes. Collins won 48,000 more votes than Trump, and Gideon lost with 88,000 fewer than Biden.
Arizona provides a good contrast; there was an incumbent Republican Senator running there as well in 2020. Biden carried Arizona with 1,672,143 votes to Donald Trump’s 1,667,686 votes. Mark Kelly ran 44,000 votes ahead of Biden while Senator McSally ran 30,000 votes behind Trump.
Looking towards the November Congressional elections, Republicans may have to rely on swing voters if they are to hold the House and retake the Senate. The problem for them is that most purple states and districts are more like Arizona than Maine.

@WaterGirl:
In scientific discourse you have to precisely quantify HOW certain or uncertain you are of anything you say. If you can’t prove something with mathematical certainty, you must qualify the statement. (But you have to be certain how certain you are, so to speak.) Otherwise, your peers are going to sense that you’re wasting their time.
Scientists run into trouble all the time translating such statements into popular language because these qualifications come across as weasel words, which in the vernacular are taken as indicating that you’re lying, or trying to say something that’s technically true but misleading. The very thing that makes language sound trustworthy to scientists makes it untrustworthy to non-scientists.
All that makes me uneasy with people putting such value on the courage of your convictions. You should have exactly as much courage as the convictions deserve, no more and no less.

This may be the most proper actual question.
Not endorsing ShitForBrains may gain her some points in some circles, maybe she’s getting feedback from actual people who might vote for her – or not, and she’s hedging her bets as much as possible. I can imagine that there are republicans that do not want him, especially those in office, because he’s actually worse than useless to them as well as to the rest of the population – of the world. But at the same time many people that vote for her will likely vote for SFB no matter what he does or says, they are loyalists to their party. Or something like that. I believe that they feel he must be something – he’s worth billions. And they don’t have even millions. Money talks, according to many humans.

Many humans are raised to do more than just survive, they are raised to prosper – even if at the expense of others, and sometimes because it’s at the expense of others….. Hate is a human emotion, we all are capable of, some of us though do actually understand that it’s a big world out there and someone else getting ahead does not mean that we can’t as well. And that protecting and helping those who are, for whatever reason, not as able to get ahead, is actually a good thing, a better way of living. It improves all of us. Selfish is an emotion that in some ways helps us survive, those smart enough to understand that being less so is far more often the best path can be somewhat far and few between.

Brian Beutler on the GOP’s Taylor Swift freakout:
“Maybe Republicans should wonder why all the attractive, likable people hate them?”
Gee, ya think?!
I’m sure they still have James Woods, and Kevin Sorbo! And Ted Nugent! Man, will their stars ever stop rising?!

1) Sad. Shocked, even. This is the end of a fantastic period in the club’s history. Not the end of our success, but the Klopp Era, and I loved the Klopp Era.
2) Okay with it. He’s Jurgen Klopp. If he says it’s time for a substitution then it’s definitely time for a substitution. Guy doesn’t get things like that wrong.
3) Grateful. That guy picked us up from decades of nearly and turned us back into European Royalty. I’m only sad the oil-funded sportswashing franchise up the M62 cheated him out of many more titles.
4) Excited. He’s not leaving a team in need of a rebuild, but a smoothly purring miracle of sporting pedigree with an Academy brimming over with new talent. It’s not so much going to be LFC looking for a manager/coach as the world’s best jostling to meet the requirements of this once in a lifetime appointment.

My only comment on the Honorable Ms. Collins is that it’s a testimony on the GOP that being a weasel is, by comparison to her colleagues, virtually a profile in courage. Few of them would even have the will to prevaricate on the topic.
@wjca: I suspect the reason Somaliland is not officially recognized is a concern that, were they to officially secede from Somalia, the warlords of the rump state might actually bury hatchets long enough to disrupt the only functional society in the area.
Unless and until someone is willing to field forces sufficient to defend Somaliland from Somalia, this state of affairs remains. Hopefully someday Somaliland can do so itself.

Most people don’t realize that the inland district is one of the poorest places in the United States, ranking with Mississippi at the bottom when you factor in the costs of heating and the dearth of economic opportunity.

It’s not great that Don Samuels is the strongest candidate willing to take her on, but a lot of other DFLers don’t want to be accused of being racist (which will happen by her supporters if anyone white runs against her, unfortunately; it’s gotten ugly with some long-time party activists) and Don a) doesn’t care, and b) doesn’t play against him. But Don’s way too pro-cop and grifts with the school choice scumbags.

@rikyrah: if the Secretary of Defense refused 14 times to call out the National Guard during the events of J6, I guess we have to ask… why? Did he not take the calls seriously? Was he not watching the news? After the 3rd call, shouldn’t he have begun to suspect that there was something amiss? Simply could it be that he was instructed by a certain someone to NOT do so? Was this part of the plan?

One thing the colonial powers especially the British is to create artificial countries out of what was once deeply tribal and ethnic lands. Iraq, India, Africa are some few examples.

Somewhere the song has two roles. One is a ballet. The other is a ballad. You cannot drag the ballet out because physics and dancers. They will hang in the air forever, or fall down. That should also constrain your ballad. Same song and physics. Drag it out too long and it isn’t the same song.

@Bill Arnold: A lot of French music of the Renaissance was found out to be nonsensically performed for the last two hundred years. Somebody decided it should be stately, so they slowed it down a lot. But a lot of it was dance music. Performed at modern speeds the dancers hung in the air for physically impossible times (too long). Speeded up, the music became less ” French Court Music” and more renaissance music played at normal speeds.

Dan Rather: “Trump’s new degrading nickname for Haley is ‘birdbrain'”
I’m taking this as further evidence that Trump’s brain ain’t what it used to be. Remember the 2016 primary season? He came up with some wickedly devastating insults of his rivals. But ‘birdbrain’ would have been a weak insult in my fifth-grade class 60 years ago. I remember that he’s had some other insults of that quality lately, but I can’t remember them because they were equally forgettable.
The more time Trump has to spend in fora where people can see his deterioration for themselves, the better off we’ll all be.

The phrase “highly respected” is the writer saying something complimentary about Collins to butter her up for them and their ‘news’ “organ”ization. There is no real news value to these articles, they only serve to groom the politician for possible future interactions with that reporter and/or news organization. There are no major news organizations worth a shit. You have to read between the lines or better yet, invert the story to get the real details behind it.
Buttering conservative politicians up, massaging their egos, promoting their party line, questioning the Democrat’s motives and hyping conservative fears gets them the access they crave.
wjca
That may be the concern. But color me deeply skeptical that the warlords woild unite like that.
Every one of them would know that, if they took their troops to attack Somaliland, but even one other warlord didn’t, they’d be at serious risk of having their base attacked while their back was turned. So you’d effectively need 100% participation, including some way to assure that everybody showed up. Rather than “experiencing unavoidable delays” long enough to execute an attack on some nominal ally. Just can’t see it happening.
And that’s before the detail that the warlords closest to Somaliland would be less than enthusiastic about having all those troops from elsewhere gathering on their turf. Or even just, supposedly, passing thru.
ColoradoGuy
@Odie Hugh Manatee: You have a point there. It’s called “access journalism”, but there’s no journalism there. It’s just free PR, with the added advantage of appearing as “news”, not advertising.
It’s not that different than “Youtube influencers”, just with the veneer of old-school print journalism. Maybe the closest analogy is product placement in movies … mutual backscratching.
