For those who don’t do twitter, here’s how the Susan Collins story I saw last week framed:

GOP Sen. Susan Collins says she will not endorse former President Trump, even if he becomes the Republican Party’s nominee for president.

Here’s the next sentence, which totally belies the first part.  Look for the weasel words in bold below.

Asked if she could see herself endorsing Trump if he wins the nomination, Collins replied: “I do not at this point.”

Same thing here.  (The Hill)

Title: Collins, leading Senate GOP centrist, won’t endorse Trump in 2024

Except she didn’t actually say NO.  She essentially said “At this time, I do not see myself endorsing trump if he wins the election.”

I don’t know if I’m more pissed off that Susan Collins is such a weasel, or that the media is so awful in their reporting of it.  In their reporting of everything!

Oh, and another quote from the Hill article.

The highly respected Maine senator was one of seven Senate Republicans to vote to convict Trump on the impeachment charge of inciting insurrection during his second Senate trial in 2021.

Highly respected by whom????

    Insidious, ain’t it? I’ve noticed in my own speaking or writing a need for conscious effort to keep those little demon phrases from being automatic. This is not offered as an excuse for Collins — maybe the contrary — just an observation that a little sliding can go a long way.

    Today, the Reproductive Freedom Alliance filed an amicus curiae brief with the Supreme Court in the case of Food and Drug Administration, et al., v. Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, arguing that, if the Court allows a recent Fifth Circuit decision to stand, it could undermine Governors’ ability to provide adequate healthcare services and would have far-reaching implications beyond reproductive healthcare.

    Mifepristone is a safe, highly effective, and widely used medication prescribed for medication abortions and miscarriage management – used in well over half of all abortions. This medication is a critical component of the reproductive healthcare system in states where abortion remains legal. Any rollback on access to mifepristone would cause major disruptions to state healthcare systems, further strain providers, and pose serious health risks to millions of women. Ideological extremists shouldn’t be allowed to overrule medical experts and decades of scientific evidence by curtailing access to safe, effective medication.

    Furthermore, this lawsuit threatens to upend the federal FDA review process – a time-tested gold standard for rigor and risk mitigation – that Governors rely on to protect the health and well-being of their constituents. If the Court allows this decision to stand, there will be severe consequences for patient access to a wide range of safe and effective medications.

    The brief argues:

    “…[Governors] rely on FDA determinations to meet the needs of those seeking healthcare in their states. Nothing about this framework contemplates litigants outside of Reproductive Freedom Alliance states who morally disapprove of a particular drug using out-of-state federal courts to invalidate FDA’s expert judgment…This strategy, if successful, would have an enormously disruptive impact on state governance and hamstring Governors’ ability to fulfill their mandate of protecting public health and safety in the reproductive healthcare context and beyond.”

    The group is a coalition of 22 governors: AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, GU, HI, IL, ME, MD, MA, MI, MN, NJ, NM, NY, NC, OR, PA, RI, WA, WI.

    And of COURSE the Hill reporter didn’t ask the obvious question, “He’s been running for president and being president for eight years, so when you say ‘Not at this point,’ what are you still looking for? What could change your mind?”

    Being in a position to ask questions like that is the ONLY reason “access” is worth anything. And they NEVER do it.

    Gayle Manchin, the wife of Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), was admitted to a hospital in Alabama on Tuesday after being involved in a car accident, the senator’s office announced.

    According to Sen. Manchin’s office, his wife and a colleague, Guy Land, were involved in an accident in Birmingham while en route to an event for the Appalachian Regional Commission. Both are in stable condition.

    @Jackie: Maine just has a lot of Independents. Their other Senator gets elected as an Independent and caucuses with the Democrats.

    Maine’s 2020 election had an unusual amount of swing voters. Biden won with 435,000 votes to Donald Trump’s 369,000, but Collins won with 417,000 votes to Gideon’s 347,000; an Independent got 40,000 votes. Collins won 48,000 more votes than Trump, and Gideon lost with 88,000 fewer than Biden.

    Arizona provides a good contrast; there was an incumbent Republican Senator running there as well in 2020. Biden carried Arizona with 1,672,143 votes to Donald Trump’s 1,667,686 votes. Mark Kelly ran 44,000 votes ahead of Biden while Senator McSally ran 30,000 votes behind Trump.

    Looking towards the November Congressional elections, Republicans may have to rely on swing voters if they are to hold the House and retake the Senate. The problem for them is that most purple states and districts are more like Arizona than Maine.

    That Independent got dropped in late ’95, and by now, we can see how utterly dependent the NM GOP is on the national brain-worm MAGA movement.

    And hey, if that means we keep winning all the statewide offices, I’m okay with that!

    Side comment: Just seeing today that there’s rumblings that Illhan Omar is once again whiffing/badly underestimating how shallow her support really is, and faces DFL party caucuses in a few weeks that she’s not organizing to win.

    In scientific discourse you have to precisely quantify HOW certain or uncertain you are of anything you say. If you can’t prove something with mathematical certainty, you must qualify the statement. (But you have to be certain how certain you are, so to speak.) Otherwise, your peers are going to sense that you’re wasting their time.

    Scientists run into trouble all the time translating such statements into popular language because these qualifications come across as weasel words, which in the vernacular are taken as indicating that you’re lying, or trying to say something that’s technically true but misleading. The very thing that makes language sound trustworthy to scientists makes it untrustworthy to non-scientists.

    All that makes me uneasy with people putting such value on the courage of your convictions. You should have exactly as much courage as the convictions deserve, no more and no less.

    I think it’s fair to say the the Washington Post Politics section qualifies.  But wouldn’t you say that this from Phillip Bump qualifies as bad words about non-Democrats?  (It’s about the daft theories that the Kansas City Chiefs got to the Super Bowl as part of a Biden campaign plot to get a high prifile Taylor Swift endorsement.)

    How would this work? Did the Baltimore Ravens take a dive? Did someone pay them? Are they just that committed to Democratic politics that they all agreed to lose?     Not endorsing ShitForBrains may gain her some points in some circles, maybe she’s getting feedback from actual people who might vote for her – or not, and she’s hedging her bets as much as possible. I can imagine that there are republicans that do not want him, especially those in office, because he’s actually worse than useless to them as well as to the rest of the population – of the world. But at the same time many people that vote for her will likely vote for SFB no matter what he does or says, they are loyalists to their party. Or something like that. I believe that they feel he must be something – he’s worth billions. And they don’t have even millions. Money talks, according to many humans.

    Many humans are raised to do more than just survive, they are raised to prosper – even if at the expense of others, and sometimes because it’s at the expense of others….. Hate is a human emotion, we all are capable of, some of us though do actually understand that it’s a big world out there and someone else getting ahead does not mean that we can’t as well. And that protecting and helping those who are, for whatever reason, not as able to get ahead, is actually a good thing, a better way of living. It improves all of us. Selfish is an emotion that in some ways helps us survive, those smart enough to understand that being less so is far more often the best path can be somewhat far and few between.

    Having family up there, and having visited dozens of times for long spells, my experience is that a significant portion of them pine for the days of the old style New England Republican. They are nostalgic for something that most of them never really experienced.

    Susan Collins has a demeanor that lets them continue to live in that slumber. However, she completely crumbles if challenged at all (she reminds me of Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, showing petulance and haughtiness, when flustered), so her handlers are very, very careful to keep her away from anything but the most friendly environment.

The larger issue is, will Somaliland become an independent nation?

    @Goku (aka Amerikan Baka): These folks say there was a former Japanese government minister who claimed that the US keeps Japan in line with the threat of earthquakes, and that the Fukushima quake was a,warning shot. Under this theory, HAARP enforces Hegemony.

    But I really have to doubt that the US caused the earthquake in Turkey. For one thing, the US found Turkiye to be as a balky and frustrating an ally after the quake as it was before. That did not change until Pfesidents Biden and Erdogan had a good meeting at the Nato Summit last July.

    Also, Erdogan did not complain about the US causing the earthquake, and that guy complains about everything!

I believe she’d been surrendered because the person who’d had her before had to move and couldn’t take her with them. So in the space of a month, she’d been taken to one strange place with unfamiliar people and then to a second strange place with another unfamiliar person.     That may be the concern.  But color me deeply skeptical that the warlords woild unite like that.

    Every one of them would know that, if they took their troops to attack Somaliland, but even one other warlord didn’t, they’d be at serious risk of having their base attacked while their back was turned.  So you’d effectively need 100% participation, including some way to assure that everybody showed up.  Rather than “experiencing unavoidable delays” long enough to execute an attack on some nominal ally.  Just can’t see it happening.

    And that’s before the detail that the warlords closest to Somaliland would be less than enthusiastic about having all those troops from elsewhere gathering on their turf.  Or even just, supposedly, passing thru.

    @cain: My wife is from Africa and she said same thing about Brits just ‘making’ countries by arbitrarily drawing lines on a map and having no care for the ethnic divisions within these areas.
