I’m tired and cranky and got a lot of stuff done today and I also think I got the most sun I have since I got here. It wasn’t near the hottest it has been here since I arrived, and there was a great breeze, but I could feel the intensity of the sun. I’ve been in places where the sun felt like this- when I spent a month in Devil’s Lake North Dakota doing Combat Engineer training circa 1993-94, the sun felt just like it did today. I left North Dakota with one of the best tans I have ever had, and I don’t think I was ever hot the entire time I was there. Weird, that big sky.
Speaking of Devil’s Lake, I had some of the greatest steaks I have ever had on a Reservation nearby the Army post. Another thing that I always wondered about is we spent a lot of time in training dealing with explosives, and I learned how to do some pretty crazy shit with just det cord and blasting caps, but of particular note was that we spent an entire day mixing diesel fuel with fertilizer being taught how to make fertilizer bombs to use as cratering charges. Within a year or two of my training, that fucking scumbag Timothy McVeigh blew up the Federal building with none other than a massive fertilizer bomb. Like I said, I wonder if they still teach that in the Army.
While I was out running an errand today I was in a plaza, and there was a teeth whitening place. I guess they have those independent of dentist’s offices now, but that’s not the point. What caught my eye was this fucking cry for help:
Jesus christ, we may have to face the fact that we’ve broken millenials and gen Z. How the fuck did this get through the ad department- “Life is short and in the end there is only pain and sadness and death. Also, we bleach teeth.”
Fucking hell.
I’m off to make dinner- fajitas, what else- and then maybe watch some tv and go to bed. Here’s a picture of Steve for ya:

@Scout211: IT’S A POST-GROUNDHOG DAY MIRACLE!
(My old boss and I did this as a running joke after one time she sarcastically called something a “Christmas miracle” a few days after Christmas. English is such a pain in the ass. I didn’t see the original, but I think Grammies would be fine. We should be less prescriptive for corporate names as long as there’s a historical justification. I think the next time I need to buy tissues, I’ll pick up some Kleenices.

I figure come summer you won’t want to be out in the noonday sun if you can help it John. One can acclimate to it over time. I did. The last or second to last grammys that won’t be coopted into the service of a fascist state. Oh I know, that’s doomerism. Okay, well here is the tangible issue: postcards and door to door…they are probably still necessary, but without a drastic adjustment of the democratic messaging machine to handle what is going on with social media, it’s not enough. It’s a situation that if you don’t get the people still reachable by those old school methods we won’t win, but on the other hand if we just continue to call twitter “not real life” or think that tik tok is “informing” people correctly and they’ll come out to vote for our team without a completely relentless response to the informational warfare being conducting against Dems and democracy on there, then the old school methods aren’t enough. And I don’t know how to solve that. If you political volunteering geniuses on here know how to reach anyone higher up and convey the importance of how they are failing, please do. If not, well, then my doomerism is justified. No one knows how to win. Great. You are as much part of the problem as me. Welcome to the team.

I had a 8oz filet mignon and afterwards we had a two layer chocolate cake at home. My son gave me a bottle of Ardbeg Uigeadail, single malt Scotch, which describes its flavor notes as treacle, bacon and bonfires. My daughter and son in law got us tickets to the Philadelphia Orchestra performance of Rachimanoff’s Piano Concerto #3 in the Conductor’s Section (right above and behind the orchestra), with reservations at a nearby hotel. @teezyskeezy: Gen Z is on TikTok and Insta far more than Twitter, and the Biden campaign is doing a ton of outreach to influencers on those platforms.
But people in general are retreating from the open conversation like nature of things like Twitter and increasingly interacting with social media primarily through private groups chat with friends and family. Bots are increasingly less of an issue than fake news sites, Russian troll farms pumping out memes that spread through actual humans, and crafted soundbites meant to be shared by right wing lunatics.
And we can’t play that game. The democratic machine cannot create blatant propaganda and push fabricated stories across social media without it being political suicide. The media environment is slanted in such a way that something that isn’t a story for Republicans would be an incessant story that destroys the party if done by Democrats.
So the Democrats are currently investing in relational organizing strategies to counteract this instead, which is about the best that can be done.

Haven’t paid attention to the Grammys in many years, but decided to watch tonight, if only to see Joni Mitchell, whom I’d heard would be there.
Holy crap, what a wonderfully, shockingly good show! Got to see a great cover of Proud Mary (one of my favorite songs to dance to), plus Fast Car delivered with such sweet joy on the face of Tracy Chapman, plus Brandi Carlisle glowing with pride as she introduced Joni Mitchell and then sat down and played with her, plus Joni herself — singing Both Sides Now in her aging deep voice with a cane in her hand, surrounded by musicians.
The vibe was women, women, women, cheering for each other and just bringing plain respect into my living room. It felt like I’d somehow stumbled into the before times, when we all knew how to hang out and be happy. I don’t do X these days, but threads was AWASH in giddiness, and not really because of anything to do with Taylor Swift. It was more like — hey, these are really good songs and they remind me of my former life, and it’s so healthy to see aging women get admired in this way.
Knocked all the way out.

@teezyskeezy:
I think you are a bit too much over the top and are going to burn out in a month or two. That and everyone here is going to tune you out because you are in constant panic about something that you and most other people have no control over; negative opinions, real or fake.
Xshitter is one place on the internet. One place and yet you act as if it is THE ONLY place. I read Xshitter and others (Bsky, Mastodon and such) and I see one hell of a lot of pushback against the bullshit that the fascists are feeding the public. I see a lot of shots being taken right back at the criminals on the right and they are hitting them hard. I see what the Biden campaign is doing and think it’s good stuff. Go volunteer, assist where you think it helps and quit being so fucking negative, as if only you can see the future and we are just stupid fucks who won’t listen to YOU.
I hear you and I disagree with you. I’ll also add that I’m already sick of your whining. I’m out…

@Odie Hugh Manatee: Guy knows a trick of how to get around the pie filter. Caps v lower case. Block the caps nym then the lower case nym gets through. Uncblock the caps then block the lower case caps and the upper case caps nym gets through.
Guy has been using that tonight.

@hitchhiker: Did you notice Taylor Swift dancing in the aisle in her fancy white dress to Fast Car? I bet she has loved that song too.

@RevRick: Happy birthday! Enjoy the concert trip. You have a wonderful family.

@Citizen Dave: I could see some of the talent was impressed with her pitch!

@Yutsano: Mr. Combs is a proud Kentucky boy. With him and Tyler Childers and Chris Stapleton and Sturgill Simpson and Cage the Elephant and My Morning Jacket and Black Stone Cherry and many other fine artists, I think we punch above our weight musically!

@Robert A Savell: One of their songs sound alot like a Simon & Garfunkel tune (IMO). Still a great act.
