With some Republicans now looking back longingly on the Speaker McCarthy years, and thinking longingly about the Squeaker’s fundraising abilities, might someone initiate the Motion to Vacate? And nominate McCarthy as speaker?
With just enough Democratic votes to give him the small number of votes that it would take him to win? With the agreement, in writing, that he would appoint people to the rules committee that would allow him to bring all votes to the floor for an up or down vote.
McCarthy feels vindicated after they voted him out, we get up or down votes on everything, and the crazy religious guy is no longer in any position of power. Likely ever, with his track record.
Crazy or brilliant?
Open thread.
Eyeroller
He’s no longer in Congress (resigned as of December 31) but I suppose there is no requirement that the Speaker also be a Representative.

Crazy; he’s a Republican, he’s untrustworthy, and he’s a Republican. Let them continue to eat their own, and quicken their own demise.

Heh.
Too One Weird Tricky for my taste.
Qevin was a liar and did not keep agreements. Democrats should not want him back.
The GQP is in the majority – for a while – they have to figure this governing stuff out. It’s not Democrats job to save them.

The reason that Jeffries didn’t save him before is because he’s completely untrustworthy. Hard pass.

What @Leto said: one of the few points on which you could get bipartisan agreement in the 118th Congress is that Kevin McCarthy can’t be trusted (absent some significant collateral, such as a knife to the throat of someone he actually cared about).
japa21
Creative but crazy. Even a commitment from Mike in writing is meaningless.
Doug R
I’d say ONLY if we get that up or down vote thing.
But as more than one commenter mention, Kev can’t be trusted.
Maybe we can get a few floor crossers voting for Keith?
WaterGirl
@Eyeroller: Correct! You do not have to be in the House to be Speaker of the House.
WaterGirl
@Leto: I would agree with that if it weren’t for the daily demise of Ukrainians and Palestinians. And the potential demise of Ukraine as a sovereign nation if we don’t get our shit together.
Another Scott
@WaterGirl:
Qevin said that he wanted XYZ before a debt ceiling and budget agreement would happen. He didn’t get XYZ.
Johnson said there wouldn’t be multiple CRs. There were multiple CRs (and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s at least one more).
Johnson and the GQP leadership need to figure out this problem of their own making. The math says that if 25 bomb-throwers prevent them from getting a majority to pass a rule or legislation, then they need to go around the bomb-throwers (as they’ve done multiple times already).
This stuff isn’t hard. They just don’t want to do it, so they pretend to be prisoners of the hard right fringe.
I say – NOPE. You figure it out, GQPers, we’re not going to save you for nothing. Come talk to us with a sensible offer if you want our votes.
Cheers,

Jackie
Kevin burned his bridges with his revenge threat to unseat the eight GQPers who joined with the Dems to fire him. He’s already publicly going after Gaetz, Mace and the TN rep, whose name escapes me atm. The dude Kevin elbowed in the back “accidentally.”
I don’t remember who the other five are.
David Hunt
I unfortunately rate this as crazy. It has been graphically demonstrated that Republicans are not good-faith actors. They cannot be trusted to adhere to any agreement once they have actual power. McCarthy especially, but I can’t think of a a single member of the GOP that could be trusted to actually keep a deal with Democrats that has to do with the distribution of power. I’ll admit that there probably are still a few in the GOP that would, but those people could not rise to a prominent position of power in the House. Their fellow GOP Members would not let them.
Jeffro
Kevin’s going to get his buddy Eric Cantor to set him up with a cushy lobbyist gig, and laugh all the way to the bank. There’s no way he’d subject himself to the insanity of the House GOP.
But he probably will keep sniping and settling scores from the sidelines, so – for the first and only time ever, I just have to say – GO KEVIN!
Warblewarble
A knife to the throat of someone Quvien actually cares about could only mean Quvien himself or perhaps tRUMP.
Leto
@WaterGirl: I’ll echo Baud and AS: it’s not our job to save their dumb asses. If they want to bring a piece of legislation forward that would help accomplish this goal, they can. They’re in the majority, this is their prerogative/job. If a fraction want to break off and… le gasp WORK WITH DEMOCRATS, they can do that too. We’re here, willing to work with non-crazies to help pass legislation. But we shouldn’t have to rely on continually looking for that one weird trick that’ll save democracy, all the fucking time.
It’s not “if we don’t get our shit together.” It’s: “if Republicans don’t get their shit together.” We extract what we can from them when we can, but come November kick as many of the worthless fucks out as we can (both House/Senate, state, local).
Another Scott
Helpful reminder from Fritschner (from 2022):
The GQP may still lose their majority before the election (but it’s obviously not a sure thing).
Cheers,

Ken
@Another Scott: As others have noted, necessary bills have passed — but with only with votes coming from Democrats, and in many (most?) cases, with more Democrats than Republicans voting for them. The bills the Republican majority has passed on their own have all been the “dead in the Senate” type.
dmsilev
Too cute by half, and it wouldn’t work anyway. Kevin McCarthy was utterly untrustworthy and none of the Democrats would want to go out on a limb for him, knowing full well that he’d saw it off behind them. If you want to get a replacement Speaker from outside the current Congress, it’d have to be someone who retired long enough ago that they can tell a plausible story of putting bare partisanship behind them. If you want to stick with former GOP Speakers, about the only even remotely plausible option would be John Boehner. And that’s a real reach. No, this is a problem that the GOP needs to resolve. Probably can’t resolve until Trump is gone.

@M31: Another option would be for those Republicans to make a deal with Democrats to oust Johnson and replace him with a retired Republican like Charlie Dent: a caretaker Speaker willing to put critical legislation with majority backing to a floor vote.
I would actually prefer this to a Democrat like Jeffries trying to run the House with a shaky majority. I would rather see him become Speaker with a substantial majority next year. This Congress has to pass critical legislation like spending bills and Ukraine aid, but they’re not going to get major progressive legislation through this year anyway.
But I think the chaos in their caucus will have to get worse before any Republicans take that step.

McCarthy was kicked out as speaker because frankly, a strong majority within the GOP caucus beyond just the hard-core far RW “Freedom Caucus” members came to regard McCarthy as an intolerably untrustworthy, duplicitous weasel – which is also consistent with Democratic members’ experience trying to deal with McCarthy – totally unreliable. So why should Ds trust McCarthy even an inch for potential tactical gain that depends on McCarthy keeping his word ?

@UncleEbeneezer: I feel like this is the same criticism of Ken Burns country music documentary, basic erasure of any type of POC representation within the music/overall POC contribution to the genre. File under “shit I just learned today”: in gold, the tee was invented by one of the first black men who graduated Harvard. Previously golfers used clumps of dirt to prop up the ball. There’ll be a Motion to Vacate over the budget, since MAGA Mikey doesn’t have the number needed for a MAGA budget but the MAGAt Brigade will demand one. The next Speaker won’t be McCarthy, though. @UncleEbeneezer: A long time ago I lived in Durham, North Carolina, which had a very vibrant Gospel music scene. My then boyfriend thought it would be fun to go to a local Gospel “competition” that featured a bunch of different categories, like solo, mixed duo, quartets, and so on. All of the performers were African-American and it was held at a big AME church in Durham. It was a lot more fun for me than him — I mean, it was awesome. But one thing really stood out to me: the male quartet sounded like a country music act. They sang hymns, but the tempo, the instrumentation and just everything else would have been right at home on a CW station.

@rikyrah: I tend to agree but it also jibes with the DSA’s historical stance since their foundations. They go after Dems while shying away from overt criticism of the GOP/rightwingers. Their response is generally that they believe they might have some degree of influence on the fringes of the Democratic party whereas they have none with the GOP. A less kind reading (and one I have come to agree with) is that their treatment at the hands of the Dems they disrupt is always going to be on the gentle side (i.e., they won’t get hauled offstage and into an alley and get the shit beaten out of them). Compared to practically any other segment of the truly activist left, the DSA has a long history of being loudmouths and cowards, and they choose the location of their battles with extreme care.

Honestly, I just think John Schneider is still pissed that “wokeness” got Dukes of Hazzard knocked out of mainstream syndication. You can buy it on Amazon or whatever, but it’s not streaming on any service I’m aware of. He got screwed out of merchandising rights when he was in his twenties and then he got screwed out of residuals once the general population finally noticed the passive racism of the show and stopped caring about it. (It was never actively racist. It just depicted life in a small, rural southern town where NO black people lived. Oh, and was defined by an ostentatious piece of Confederate memorabilia that was a bigger star of the show than any of the actors.)
And this despite the fact that he was a faker from the start. He was born in raised in Westchester County, NY, just north of NYC. He moved to Atlanta at 14. And at 18, he got the part of Bo Duke by adopting a complete fake accent, borrowing a beat-up pickup truck from a friend to drive to the audition, and carrying a six-pack of beer in to meet the audition people.
But in 1998, he became “born again” and turned into the piece of shit he is today. It’s been less than 2 months since he called for the hanging of Joe Biden. And now he’s whining because non-assholes are making inroads into country music. Pitiful.

Totally off track, but something interesting happened today. Mrs. Japa received her most recent EOB from her supplemental Medicare policy. We noticed something strange. There was a claim submitted to Medicare in December for monthly DME. It covered 10 months of services amounting to $19,000 dollars, of which Medicare paid out $14,587. Normally the supplemental would have picked up the balance but they did not pay anything.
The interesting thing is that she never received, and has never required, the DME mentioned and we have never heard of the company.
We got on the phone and spent 24 minutes with folks in the Medicare fraud unit who also believe fraud is involved and thanked us for calling. Afterwards, I did some investigating and discovered that Medicare is probably already investigating not only this company, but 6 others for fraud. Medicare cannot discuss this, not can the FBI, but apparently 7 companies that did some DME supplies were sold over the last 2 years and there be upward of $2 billion of fraud involved.
This articleexplains the whole thing.
Because the particular company involved is in Florida, I immediately thought of Senator Scott.

Have to admit my first thought was that signing the agreement in his own blood with a quill pen, with multiple witnesses from both parties and photos of the document using several different cameras, plus an agreement to forfeit the life of his only child (a son, Connor) if he violated the agreement, would be sufficient.

A little mindblowing to read the responses here, especially the “not Dems job to save them” thing.
Of course 1000% if there was any maneuver that would effectively eliminate the speaker position while R’s hold the house by assuring all legislation got to the floor, of course we should take that. Really no matter what.
Of course there is no such maneuver because Republicans would not give up that power and no one would want to be speaker absent that power. But it takes a partisan loss of perspective to even hesitate at the proposition. The counter “don’t help R’s out of their inability to legislate” argument is pretty much “don’t save the country or Ukraine or the planet if that stops Republicans for getting blame for destroying those things.”

@Bupalos: Just saving Johnson or the GQP won’t fix anything. If they manage to pass another CR or even a budget or even the Supplemental, we’ll still be at the mercy of the bomb-throwers come September 30 and then it will start up again.
This is our opportunity to force the GQP to stand-up to the bomb-throwers and to do their jobs.
Democrats have to get something substantial in return for their votes. Johnson hasn’t offered anything yet.
Something will pass in coming days/weeks for Ukraine. They’re arguing now about what and the cost that the GQP has to pay for Democrats support. It’s hardball politics and it’s the only thing the GQP monsters understand.

Haley was born here. You should be careful not to throw her parents under the bus. And it doesn’t matter if her parents came to America a hundred years ago or yesterday.
I want to be clear. I am not a Haley champion. But immigrants from many countries have had to fight for the right of citizenship in parallel to the struggles of black people.
And there were idiotic court cases in which people from India were acknowledged to be Caucasian, but still not Caucasian enough.
ETA. I wonder if Haley has ever acknowledged how her father taught at an HBCU. I also wonder how often the press have asked her about it.

I am not throwing her parents under the bus.
I am stating a fact.
As part of a group that is routinely told to ‘ go back to where you came from’….and my ancestors have been here before the founding of the republic…..
Her parents only got in because of the CHANGE IN IMMGRATION BROUGHT ABOUT BECAUSE OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT.
Before then, the doors were SHUT to non-Whites for almost a century.
They weren’t let in because of happenstance. People fought, got beaten and died in the Civil Rights Movement.
Everything that they were able to achieve in America, INCLUDING GETTING TO COME HERE, was possible because of the benefits of the Civil Rights Movement.
They birthed a child who was able to EAT and go to Private School, because of the opportunities the BLACK community gave BOTH of her parents.
She, in turn, turns around chasing White Adjacency and disrespecting Black people at every turn.
So, yeah, that shyt bothers me to no end about Nimrata.

But Biden’s CIA Director was in Israel today, flashing a yellow “Proceed with Caution” light at the Israeli government. I think the Qataris are working on Hamas, along with Egypt, the Saudis, and the Emiratis.
Reports are that the last three countries sent a delegation to Qatar last week to persuade Hamas leaders to surrender on terms. The Saudis propose evacuating Hamas leaders and fighters to Algeria.

Haven’t seen them wash up in years. My dad grew up in Michigan and said the fish had to be removed by front end loaders when he was a kid. It was probably a bit smelly.
prostratedragon
@mrmoshpotato: Oh, just a tad. Your dad and I remember the same dy-off. They were in piles all along the beaches, strongly odoriferous for at least a mile. Also, think it was the same year of the bluzzard and McCormick Place fire, so the fish got everyone dreading the boils or something.

@mrmoshpotato: I’m guessing all those alewives perished from pollution. One good thing we’ve done over the past few decades is clean up our lakes and rivers, so now a Lake Michigan alewive probably has a good life until some lake trout eats him.
The harbors are cleaner too. Last year I read about people catching tuna in New York Harbor. That’s a common thing now.

@rikyrah:
Again, the history of how people from other countries could become citizens or claim whiteness, is more complicated than you allow. And this includes people from European countries.
I already mentioned United States v. Bhagat Singh Thind, where it was acknowledged that even though Thind might be considered to be Caucasian based on science and linguistics, he still wasn’t white enough. Not only was he denied citizenship, but other Asian Americans had their citizenship revoked because of this ruling. Thind later was allowed to become a citizen because of a law giving citizenship to World War One veterans.
The battle for civil rights has been fought by many people who have been affected by racist practices. Their fights have never been incidental or secondary to the struggles of black people.

On another topic, just wanted to note that Barack Obama went by Barry for several years. I don’t blame him for that, and I don’t blame Haley for going by an “American” middle name. It’s often a family’s way of bridging between an older cultural heritage and a newer one.

@Eyeroller: In Mrs. Haley’s case, I just do not believe her. Understand that many immigrant families put a ‘Western’ name on their birth certificates. I think one of the major reasons she married Mr. Haley, was cause she liked how ‘Haley’ went with ‘Nikki’. I’m sure they have a love connection, but I can damn well believe that if you were courting young Nikki and your last name was ‘Dinglebonker’ or something like that, you were DOA.

I can’t speak for Jackie, but I think they meant “plaintiffs”, not prosecutors.
And IANAL, but I have successfully defended myself pro se in a civil lawsuit, so–based on my one experience–I think, but am not certain, that they are actually counterplaintiffs, not plaintiffs, and the prosecutors are counterdefendants here, because this hearing is a response to a case where the prosecutors are prosecuting T**** et alia as defendants.
I hope a BJ lawyer can tell me if I’m thinking correctly about this, or correct me where I’m wrong.
