Anyone besides me up for hangng out and waiting for election results?
Politico Election Tracker (Democrats)
Is Dave Weigel still in the game now the he’s not at the Washington Post?
Is there a Michigan election results guru that we should be watching?
WaterGirl
I had this post scheduled, and it looks like Anne Laurie is working on a Michigan results post, too, so you may get two of them
Anyone know what time we can expect the Michigan results to start coming in?
Urza
So when Biden still gets over 80%+ even with the none of the above campaign that will of course get spun into weakness for him, even though any smart muslim would never want the other guy back regardless of any protest vote right now.
Mousebumples
No idea. I’ll checkout bsky – usually there have been election skeets there when I’ve looked.
Putting my youngest to bed soon. He’s fighting an ear infection, a cold, and teething, so a few more snuggles before bedtime…
WaterGirl
@Mousebumples: That’s a hat trick, but not in a good way. :-(
Jackie
MSNBC and CNN coverages start at 8 blog time.
ETA: Two things I’m paying attention to; the Dems Gaza protest vote and how many votes Haley steals from TIFG.
WaterGirl
@Urza: We all know the answer to that. :-)

Random Michigan (or even other state curiosity question) – how do write ins work?
In Wisconsin (per my poll worker father), if you’re not a registered write in candidate, they don’t try to decipher handwriting, or keep track of how many votes Mickey Mouse got. (I guess you can also ask for the list of write in candidates for your precinct, which I will do the next time the GOP is running unopposed for something)
From NH Primary (and, it appears, Michigan), this varies by state. Anyone have more info? I’m curious…
Baud
I wonder how many more votes uncommitted will get than Dean Philips.
WaterGirl
From the NYT site, it looks like there are a few counties that are on *central time, so we likely won’t see results until 9 pm.
If I’m right about that, we should see a deluge of votes come it at 9 o’clock Eastern, on the dot, from the precincts that closed at 8 pm Eastern.
I had no idea that time zones could differ county by county.
WaterGirl
@Jackie: I wonder how much of that is blah blah blah pre-game stuff?
Scout211
WaterGirl got there first
Added:
Could be a long night.
I call it for Joseph R. Biden right now, though.
WaterGirl
@Scout211: I wonder if I should pull this and put it up closer to 9?
Urza
@Baud: I forgot he didn’t drop out yet. I hope the number is high enough to be soul crushing for him.
Geminid
@WaterGirl: I read that results will be coming by 9:30 Eastern Time.
Reuters White House correspondent Nandita Bose is reporting from Michigan. She posted about interviews of Dearborn voters. Out of 11, 9 said they voted “Uncommitted,” and 2 said they voted for Trump. One, an Arab-American, said her familiy members voted Democratic (except for a sister who was a “Bush Republican.”
On the other hand, Bose reported that:
In her Twitter heading, Ms. Bose says she is a Northwestern University grad and a Dog Mom.

Not so much “feel like” but more like “compelled out of anxiety.”
Jackie
@WaterGirl: We’ll find out. I just hope Biden wins by a hugely bigger margin than TIFG.
Scout211
@WaterGirl: My vote is to go ahead and leave it up so it doesn’t get lost in the evening threads.
WaterGirl
@TeezySkeezy: No matter how it turns out – in terms of protest votes – we’ll learn a lot about where things stand that will be very useful for November.
So please don’t fret; we’re about to get a big gift in terms of information. :-)
WaterGirl
@Jackie:
I can’t imagine that he won’t, but I guess we’ll find out soon. ISH.

@Scout211: At least we’re having enough evening posts these days that a thread could get lost! :-)

Dunno if Wasserman will be covering MI tonight – he generally seems pretty good on race day.

Cheers,

MSNBC is reporting results. In 2012, Uncommitted received 10+ %. If it stays at 10% for Biden, it is no big deal.
Lyrebird
@WaterGirl: It’s an important enough election that two posts would surely not be too many! Not so much because of any doubts about who will win their primaries, more to see turnout. I agree with something japa said, something like how this is exactly the time for a protest vote, if that is what those voters want to do. No danger of throwing the primary to Dean Whatsit.
Do I recall right that AL’s spousal unit might be from Michigan?
Tom Levenson
Just checked the FTFNYT election site; 22% of Oakland County is in and Biden has 88%; looks like uncommitted is in second with 8%. Wayne County, which includes Dearborn, is less than 1% in, but that’s where uncommitted is doing better, running at about 30% to Biden’s 63%.
So–not much information yet. But if Wayne County keeps going as it has begun, that defines the November problem. Biden took 68% of the vote there in 2020, with a ~233,000 vote margin over Trump. His statewide margin was about 155,000. A 30% erosion in the fall would basically tie the election (assuming folks choose not to vote, rather than voting for Trump. So there would be a lot of work to do.
Of course, this election won’t be a simple replay of 2020. I imagine the assault on women’s bodies and everything to do with sex, pretty much, will have significant effects on Trump’s electorate. But still, work to do.

@WaterGirl: Yes of course, even here in Indiana, the NW and SW counties are on Central time (and most of my life the whole state would alternate Eastern/Central because we never changed the time).
But we non-Michiganders always forget about the U.P. If you look at Google Maps, (and do the longitude), the westernmost part of Michigan is about exactly due north of Saint Louis. I love geography!
Lyrebird
No clue. I am curious whether more people live in Dearborn, MI than in NH… okay quick search says no, The entire state of NH has 10x the population of Dearborn, and MI as a whole has like 7x the population of NH.
Formerly disgruntled in Oregon
@Tom Levenson: That also assumes that none will hold their noses and vote for Biden in November. There’s probably a decent percentage who will vote for Biden when faced with the binary choice vs Trump.
Steeplejack
@WaterGirl:
I learned about the Michigan time zones today. Explainer on Wikipedia. The four CST counties are like a wig on top of Wisconsin.
Miss Bianca
@Steeplejack: Hell, I grew up in Michigan and I didn’t know that the state straddled time zones!
Anoniminous
Biden is going to win. The Uncommitted vote don’t mean shee-it, to quote Mr. Natural, cuz there’s no skin in the game.
Jackie
@Tom Levenson: It’ll be interesting to see what percentage of voters in the college towns vote uncommitted – the youth are really pissed about the Gaza situation – not that I blame them!
Anne Laurie
New post with more information, up top…
Kay
@Tom Levenson:
Oof. I hope that changes. It’s worse than I thought it would be. But at least we’ll know and then maybe can do something about it.
Gin & Tonic
@Anoniminous: Props for quoting Mr. Natural.
Urza
@Betty: News orgs do not care about such context when it gets in the way of the narrative.
WaterGirl
@Another Scott: That’s who I was thinking of. I ended up typing in Dave Weigel and that didn’t look right!
Anne Laurie
That only happened, IIRC, around the time I moved there for college (early 1970s). The affected population was very small at the time, and I don’t think it’s gotten much larger…
WaterGirl
@Betty: With 10% of votes in, uncommitted is at 16%.
No idea which 10% is in, though!
Mousebumples
I’m guessing Dearborn is a small part of Wayne County? (I think it also includes Detroit, but my knowledge of Michigan geography is limited.) I’m curious to see if that number drops as we get more results in (eg Dearborn wanted to go FIRST!) or if it’s static. I’m not saying losing 30% to uncommitted in Dearborn is great, but I’m curious to see how the numbers compare across precincts.
Also, apparrently Michigan also has made voting easier since 2020, so I wonder if that will impact turnout (now or in November).
Geminid
@Tom Levenson: Regarding the effect of the Israel/Gaza War, I think a lot will depend on the course of the war over the coming weeks.
Ksmiami
@Mousebumples: very small part
Mousebumples
@Ksmiami: appreciate the context, thanks!

So, the “Uncommitted” groups are a offshoot of the Leopards Ate My Face Party?
What is Plan B if Trump wins and the KKK rolls through Dearborn and simply destroys Muslim businesses and lives?
