Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Oppose, oppose, oppose. do not congratulate. this is not business as usual.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

DeSantis transforming Florida into 1930s Germany with gators and theme parks.

Republican speaker of the house Mike Johnson is the bland and smiling face of evil.

This year has been the longest three days of putin’s life.

Sadly, media malpractice has become standard practice.

I might just take the rest of the day off and do even more nothing than usual.

They want us to be overwhelmed and exhausted. Focus. Resist. Oppose.

Putin must be throwing ketchup at the walls.

In my day, never was longer.

You’re just a puppy masquerading as an old coot.

Give the craziest people you know everything they want and hope they don’t ask for more? Great plan.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Marge, god is saying you’re stupid.

Bad people in a position to do bad things will do bad things because they are bad people. End of story.

We still have time to mess this up!

Never entrust democracy to any process that requires republicans to act in good faith.

Sometimes the world just tells you your cat is here.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

Perhaps you mistook them for somebody who gives a damn.

The most dangerous place for a black man in America is in a white man’s imagination.

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

Jamie Raskin is so good at this.

It’s probably less than a minute, but it’s one of the best things I have seen all day.

This is fun, also.

So Glad That Jamie Raskin Decided To Stay In the House

Now that Larry Hogan is the likely GOP Senate nominee, I’d be happier if Raskin was running for Senate; he’d be able to slice and dice Hogan. AFAICT, Hogan’s reputation as a moderate survived his two terms as governor, so he’ll need an opponent who can keep Hogan from pulling a Youngkin on us.

I don’t know much about the two main candidates for the Dem nomination. Trone’s been in the House for several years, but the fact that I know next to nothing about him doesn’t give me much faith in his ability to keep Hogan out of the Senate. Alsobrook’s been in local government, I don’t know if she’s up to this battle either.

It was pleasant to learn that dogs are allow inside and can help you fill out your ballot, although they are not allowed to vote themselves. Even if they were, Bernie is not quite seven, and voting age is never calculated in dog years.

Apologies if this has already been laughed at been discussed downstairs, but point and laugh.   Go ahead.

Independent Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.says that he has his short list for a running mate all worked out, and it’s headlined by fellow conspiracy theorist Aaron Rodgers.

RFK Jr. told the New York Times that he is looking at Aaron Rodgers, former Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura, Tulsi Gabbard, Rand Paul and Andrew Yang. Quite a fun group. It’s not exactly clear what the New York Jets think about their Quarterback running in a presidential campaign during training camp, but it’s the Jets so it probably doesn’t matter.

Eh. I’m not all that worried about Hogan trying to snipe the seat in Maryland. Oftentimes people like someone as a governor but don’t like the idea of that person doing a different role in government. Plus has Maryland had their Senate primary yet? Lord knows the places where the MAGA is in the minority have some really loopy folks voting in the primary.

Alabama’s been in the news with IVF and Katie Lied.
And now: Special Election on March 26 for Alabama State House of Representatives District 10.
Doug Jones carried the district in both his US Senate campaigns, 2017 and 2020.
The reason for a special election:
the incumbent Republican resigned after being arrested for voter fraud,
to which he later pled guilty.
Doug Jones and Planned Parenthood have endorsed the Democratic candidate, Marilyn Lands.

    @lowtechcyclist:

I don’t know much about the two main candidates for the Dem nomination

I was in Raskin’s district in 2018 and 2020. I was in Trone’s district in 2022. The state legislative district I’m in is About 60R-40D so running for those seats as a D is a pretty thankless task. I attended a fundraiser for the Ds in 2018 where Raskin spoke. He gave a great talk about the importance of local races and he had a good 5-6 minutes with details on the strengths of each of the candidates. A real commitment for a pretty hopeless set of races. Of course now a lot of people nationally know Raskin’s speaking skills and commitment.

Trone is not quite as good a speaker, but he is also very committed and works hard for local candidates, even the ones with not much chance of winning. His pet cause is the opioid addiction problem and he has done a lot of work both in the House and locally to support programs and people trying to deal with the problem. I’ve heard from people doing this work that it isn’t just for show, he really puts in the effort. I’m quite confident that if he gets the nomination he’ll run a vigorous campaign in the general.

I don’t know a lot about Alsobrooks, but I’ve heard a bunch of good things. I need to do more research about her record before I decide who I’m going to vote for in May.

I don’t know much about the R field, but I’m not sure Hogan is a sure bet to win. MD has closed primaries and the Rs have been going full MAGA lately. In the 2022 a MAGA nutjob beat Hogan’s hand picked successor. Hogan called the guy a “QAnon whacko” and refused to support the guy in the general. I have to believe a lot of R primary voters haven’t forgotten that, but whether it is enough to give someone else the nomination, I don’t know. I’m also not as worried as some people that MD D voters will feel all warm and fuzzy about Hogan’s “moderate” cred. He’s never had to own his abortion bill vetos because the veto was always overridden in the D legislature. It is true that an R has been elected governor a number of times in the last 20 years, but each time there also was elected a veto proof D majority in the legislature. The last time a R was elected to the Senate was Mathias in 1980 and he was considered way too liberal for even the pre-Reagan R party. I don’t think it is impossible for Hogan to win, but so much has changed since he last faced voters in 2018 and Senate is such a different position than governor I really think it is unlikely he’ll win even if he gets the R nomination.

The game was the crown jewel of Sunday as no other contest on any network came close to it. This matchup was the most-watched game of the day across all networks.

It doesn’t stop there. This game is the most-watched women’s game in a quarter century. The Hawkeyes and Cornhuskers were the most-watched women’s game on CBS since 1999.
