Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

One way or another, he’s a liar.

Wait, what?

If you cannot answer whether trump lost the 2020 election, you are unfit for office.

No one could have predicted…

I would gladly pay you tuesday for a hamburger today.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

Stamping your little feets and demanding that they see how important you are? Not working anymore.

These are not very smart people, and things got out of hand.

Yeah, with this crowd one never knows.

Fight for a just cause, love your fellow man, live a good life.

When they say they are pro-life, they do not mean yours.

Hi god, it’s us. Thanks a heap, you’re having a great week and it’s only Thursday!

Something needs to be done about our bogus SCOTUS.

Incompetence, fear, or corruption? why not all three?

People are weird.

The Giant Orange Man Baby is having a bad day.

Accused of treason; bitches about the ratings. I am in awe.

This is dead girl, live boy, a goat, two wetsuits and a dildo territory.  oh, and pink furry handcuffs.

We still have time to mess this up!

They love authoritarianism, but only when they get to be the authoritarians.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

It’s all just conspiracy shit beamed down from the mothership.

Consistently wrong since 2002

I’m more christian than these people and i’m an atheist.

Evangelical Christian Sounds So Much Nicer Than White Nationalist

by WaterGirl|  January 19, 202410:00 am| 119 Comments

This post is in: Open Threads

These lyrics from Eve of Destruction have always stuck with me.

And think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
Ah, you may leave here for four days in space
But when you return, it’s the same old place
The poundin’ of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don’t leave a trace
Hate your next door neighbor
but don’t forget to say grace

I saw links to this NYT article in multiple places yesterday, but I have slept since then and I don’t recall who the linkers were.

Evangelical christian sounds so much nicer than white nationalist, which at least some of your neighbors might not approve of.

What may matter more than endorsements and policy plans are Mr. Trump’s embrace of Christianity as a cultural identity — and his promises to defend it.

At a recent rally in Waterloo, Iowa, Mr. Trump cast Christians as a broadly persecuted group facing down a government weaponized against them. Catholics are the current target of “the communists, Marxists and fascists,” he said, citing a recent controversy about a retracted F.B.I. memo, and adding that “evangelicals will not be far behind.”

Read the whole thing – here’s a gift link.

If you click the link, you will see an image of a very ordinary looking woman, seemingly bowing her head as if in prayer, or as if in the presence of a deity.  It feels somehow like a mashup of a prayer and a pledge of allegiance,  I found that image very evocative, revoting in fact – it seems like we are just one step away from “Trump baptisms” at Trump rallies.  And loyalty oaths.  You just know that these people would sell out their neighbors, and their families, even their children, if it curried favor with their LEADER.

So disgusting.  Hoping the nausea will fade if I get my thoughts out there.

Bonus: for a (sad) laugh and as a palate cleanser.

“Let me get this straight. You welcomed nude photos of Hunter Biden in a public hearing but you won’t welcome the testimony of Hunter Biden in a public hearing. If Hunter testified in the nude, would you then let him appear for a public hearing?” https://t.co/ArrGFZIJZ7

Good News (Maybe): No Shutdown *Just Yet*

Why “right now” was important, even to the Tantrum Toddlers Caucus:

More SNOW in the forecast has accelerated deadline pressure for Congress to pass a short-term spending bill ahead of Friday’s shutdown deadline. Per the Washington Post, “House, Senate pass short-term bill averting government shutdown until March”: [gift link]

Congress on Thursday passed legislation to keep the federal government open into March, approving the third stopgap spending bill in four months as lawmakers struggle to agree on long-term government funding plans.

The bill extends deadlines to March 1 and March 8. Money for roughly 20 percent of the government — including the Transportation Department, some veterans’ assistance, and food and drug safety programs — had been set to expire just after midnight early Saturday. The remainder — which funds the Defense and State departments, among other critical functions — would have expired Feb. 2 without the new extension.

The Senate passed the legislation, 77-18, Thursday afternoon. The House followed suit, 314-108, hours later, after GOP hard-liners launched a last-minute pressure campaign to attach partisan border security measures to the funding package. The votes send the legislation to President Biden to sign into law and avert a partial shutdown ahead of the deadline.

I saw this windmill on my way to meeting up with my cousin and his young son (whom I met for the first time) for games and snacks at a vegan cafe.  Said six year old kid was adorable–he acted like an eight year old, tried some amusing calvinball with the various game rules, and has a very British accent in English which he gets from his mom.

While I’m not sure what, if anything, it’s hooked up to, the windmill definitely gets a good spin when the wind is going.

Sometimes, when an American official like Greg Abbott or Ron DeSantis is being particularly obnoxious about threatening to saw off their fringe of nation for INDEPENDENCE, I check in on our British neighbors to see how the IRL test of such political theories is going…

A British Tory Prime Minister, on the very morning his party polls at TWENTY PERCENT, standing at a lectern insisting that a racist policy MADE UP OUT OF THIN AIR two and a half years after the last election is “the Will of the People”.

For shame, Britain, for shame.

I’ve been working most of the day, but even though we haven’t heard from the appeals court yet, there seems to be a lot of legal news.

🌼 It seem to me that Fani Willis is handling herself pretty well here.

JUST IN: Fani Willis has moved to quash the subpoena issued by Nathan Wade’s wife in their divorce proceedings. She says the marriage has been “irretrievably broken” since 2021 and she has nothing relevant to offer.

Details TKhttps://t.co/pUbzKPbHBZ

— Kyle Cheney (@kyledcheney) January 18, 2024

🌼  We suspected that the time waiting for the appeals court to rule would most likely delay the March trial date, and now we have confirmation from Judge Chutkan, or at least a strong hint.

New: Federal judge overseeing Trump’s election case in DC indicates the March trial date won’t hold — Chutkan told Trump that he would get the full seven months to prepare his defense, and time waiting for DC Circuit to rule won’t count against him. https://t.co/o8EQrDbInm

— Hugo Lowell (@hugolowell) January 18, 2024

Guardian article about the hint from Judge Chutkan referenced above.

🌼  Rebutting the “Trump won his motion about Jack Smith” bullshit.

Judge Chutkan DENIED ALL OF THAT. She said Jack Smith did nothing wrong. She said he didn’t violate the stay order. And she modified the stay order to bar Jack Smith from making further filings.

To say “trump won” is fucking laughable. END/

Late Night Open Thread: ‘Trump Evangelicals’, Same As Any Other Religious Cult

by Anne Laurie|  January 18, 202410:01 pm| 105 Comments

Pastor at Trump rally says when Trump is president “there will be retribution on all those who have promoted evil in this country. This is a spiritual battle.” He then says that Marxism is bad because everyone in China has the same haircut. pic.twitter.com/ikjeHSkDeY

— Ron Filipkowski (@RonFilipkowski) January 18, 2024

American Evangelical communities have always pulsed in a grey area between ‘Prosperity Gospel’ and pure cultic ‘Anyone Not Of Our Body Must Be Eliminated’ — part boosterism, part paranoia. Trump has given a portion of the voters calling themselves Evangelicals (the ones most interested in punishing their perceived enemies) a new, more satisfying (to them!) church in which to worship.

You don’t have to be ‘religious’ to appreciate how much of American politics has been influenced by people looking for community, in a big sprawling country full of nomads where finding a church has historically been one of the easiest way of finding others with similar lifestyles…

'The only savior I can see': Iowa evangelicals increasingly turn to worshiping Trump https://t.co/nSMLrb2Oak

— Thomas Kaine (@thomaskaine5) January 8, 2024

They *are* ‘white supremacist Christian nationalists’, but they’re *also* evangelicals. Therefore, they consider themselves ‘called’ to testify the power & glory of their substitute god-emperor. The communal nature of their belief system is not disconnected from their actions!

This is worth repeating. These people who worship Trump who the NYT cravenly ID's as "evangelicals" are in fact white supremacist Christian nationalists. Shame on NYT for not calling that out. https://t.co/x4IJf1hSAA https://t.co/s4780QAQA0
