Last week, serious fiscal conservative Nikki Haley vetoed a bill that she once co-sponsored to pay for HPV vaccinations for middle schoolers in South Carolina. The reason was simple:
Haley said in her veto message that the bill is a “precursor to another taxpayer-funded healthcare mandate.”
Reading that, I was wondering how much the 2016 Republican candidate for President thought it costs to diagnose and treat cervical cancer. For the uninsured, if there’s still a Planned Parenthood standing in South Carolina, women can at least get an affordable screening, and then they have a medical bankruptcy to look forward to after their treatment, best case. But for the moochers and looters on Medicaid, taxpayers are going to foot the bill for a bunch of procedures that could have been prevented by two shots.
Of course, all the misery, pain and waste that Haley’s veto will cause isn’t really to save any money. She’s just pandering to a bunch of dumb shits/Republican primary voters who think that giving girls a vaccination against a STD will turn them into sluts.

Yup!

Pathetically, a number of otherwise smart people will support this for reasons other than slut-shaming and Keyan facsist socialized medicine. The anti-vaccine crowd is loud and ignorant.
HPV is nothing to fuck around with. My wife had to endure two major surgeries, which cost a shitload of money and time and other resources. It cost me time at work and stressed our oldest daughter, as well. And a lot of hardcore anxiety had to be dealt with.
But none of that really matters to these people. They think they have a point to prove.

Her position makes no moral, fiscal or medical sense. The bill passed 63-40 in the state house and 40-2 (!) in the senate.
When confronted with her earlier position, she said, “It was a mistake then, I’ve said it’s a mistake now. Now that I have a 14-year-old daughter, it is something that is very close to my heart in terms of what I’m going to do as a parent and what I want for my child.”
Mother of God, who are these people?

People who other people accuse the Democrats of being the same as or worse than?

Ugh, a dear friend is starting her anal cancer treatment as we speak.

While I fully understand the focus of the HPV fight is on womens health I’d like to point out that my oncologist says it was the cause of my throat cancer. The virus lives in many people, men and women, and strikes when & were it is able.
While the trogs on the right want to pretend the HPV vaccine means “free sex with my little baby” it really means a huge cost savings for insurance companies and government – Oh and a huge reduction in human suffering.

This particular anti-vaccine stance is so illogical I wonder if they have become nihilists.
Cervical cancer can lead to a nasty death. Plus many, many of the victims are virtuous women who caught the virus from their husbands. The microorganism itself of course is completely amoral and doesn’t distinguish between good and bad women.
These are the same people who want to limit access to screening for women.
It just isn’t logical at all.

I wonder if this is a good opportunity to use the tactic that the anti-abortion movement uses of forcing people to see images of fetuses. The image of a cancer destroyed reproductive system is probably visually striking (the one on the wikipedia page Mistermix linked to certainly is). If you are going to try to make the moral claim that such destruction is acceptable for people to choose, then shouldn’t you be confronted with what it looks like?
I’m reminded of the video from the Komen protests where the woman showed what her mastectomy looked like.

Since they know that all women are (at least potential) sluts, what they really don’t want is to remove the punishment for having sex.
rikyrah
this is who they are. no shock here.
What Have The Romans Ever Done for Us? (formerly MarkJ)
Oh no, it won’t prevent them from being sluts. It will interfere with one of God’s punishments for being a slut. Those girls deserve cervical cancer in the wingnut mind, because they’re sluts. They won’t get morals, but at least they can be punished for not having them, or for being stupid enought to pick a husband who couldn’t wait until marriage to screw someone else. Or who cheats on them, which is probably their fault anyway.

Rick Perry was (is) an awful person in many ways, but his original executive order mandating HPV vaccine in Texas was one of the few sensible policies that had ever been put forward by any of the GOP candidates for president this year. And, of course, he got skewered for it.

calling south carolina voters “dumb shits” is an insult to dumb shits all over the south.

HPV is noting to fuck around with, no pun intended. The cervical cancers that result are pretty fast growing and harder to treat than the docs once believed about cervical cancer. Not to mention the anal and throat cancers. Which can be largely prevented with a vaccine.
But no, that’s promoting sexytime. This is who these people are. However corrupt the process of Perry’s decision was, it at least was good policy.

Have you ever noticed that when a Republican recites or summarizes the Preamble to the Constitution they always leave out two words, “general welfare”. I noticed this little verbal tic when the Rs ‘read’ the Constitution on the house floor and when Paul Ryan was rebutting Obama after he addressed Congress on jobs. Apparently in the Conservative Brain, there is no cognition of the role government plays in keeping it’s citizens safe. And I guess, “pursuit of happiness” is really just a metaphor for greed and inequality.
gex
It actually isn’t about girls becoming sluts. Their entire world view is that women are the cause of all things that are bad and must be constantly punished. Don’t have sex, you’re a prude. Have sex, you’re a slut. And so on and so forth. They are ever so pleased to find these ways to make life dangerous, painful, and torturous for women.
gex
@bcinaz: Hell, they are forgoing the entire right to “life” on this one. Because as we all know, you only have a right to that BEFORE you are born.
Mnemosyne
@sb:
So she’s going to refuse to vaccinate her child against HPV so her daughter doesn’t become a slut like those other girls?
Hahahaha, just kidding. Of course Haley is going to get her daughter vaccinated to prevent her from dying a horrible death from cancer caused by HPV. It’s all those other girls in South Carolina who deserve to die for not being born to rich parents. Why should the governor of their state give a shit about them?
TS
I will NEVER understand a woman treating other women in this fashion. Don’t have any time for men who do similar but it seems so much worse when a woman attacks her own.
serge
Nooki Haley is a walking excrescence, a monstrous waste of DNA, a knuckle-dragging troglodyte, a human black hole…but don’t blame Charleston. We’re a good bit like Austin is in Texas. Blame Columbia.
Adam Robert Ryan
Prediction: As soon as the rightwing bozos learn that HPV has become a major cause of mouth and throat cancers in men — men get exposed to the virus the way you think they get exposed — they will quietly drop their opposition to the vaccine.
TenguPhule
So in other words her thinking is “If my daughter doesn’t do things my way, she deserves to die a horrible death.”
And this isn’t Child Abuse?
sherparick
It is amazing how the group think and wanting to fit into the tribal approval as the test keeps getting pushed further and further out as the anxiety rises. As some have pointed out, having women suffer for their sexuality is kind of the point.

Haley nee, Nimrata Nikki Randhawa (Ihr Papier, Bitte!) was quoted as saying “I screwed my way through high school, college, business, politics and I am still screwing like a bunny rabbit without having taken that HPV vaccine, So why waste all that money on vaccines that you don’t need to turn into a slut?”

@Corbin Dallas Multipass: That sounds really uncivil! Also too, shrill.
