I’ve noticed that references to Katrina in the news talk about it as this totally natural super disaster… with no references to the government response.

@rlrr: Obama’s causing drought in one deep red state and now he’s doing his best to flood another one out!

Worrying news. My thoughts are with the people of New Orleans.
Yutsano
@Nemo_N: Well yeah. Remember there was no President from January 2001 to January 2009. Except when the economy collapsed, but we know that was all Obama even before he was nominated. And 9/11, which was Clinton’s.
OGLiberal
My wife and kids are down there visiting my in-laws in Algiers. (not sure why we thought the last week of August/first week of September was a great time to plan the trip) They’ve been out of power for quite some time. I don’t envy my wife right now – dealing with a 5 and 6-year old with no TV and air conditioning must be hell. It was my greatest fear when Irene came through Jersey last year. (luckily, we never lost power even though we live 1/2 from the ocean)

@OGLiberal: Most people, umm, decide to head away from a hurricane. Just sayin’.

Why is CNN trying to downplay their African-American camera-woman getting peanuts thrown at her during the Republican convention?

I checked with weather dot com this morning and it seems that Isaac is almost stalled where it is, just sort of sitting there and raining like hell. In the meantime, storm surges are undoubtedly building up.
Right now, it looks like most of Isaac’s damage will come not from wind [still significant] but from flooding. The really bad news is that it’s the flooding that kills most hurricane victims anyway.
New Orleans itself did have an evacuation plan in place this time [finally!] and arrangements were made at the city/state/federal level to have emergency personnel ready. The National Guard was activated yesterday, I think. At this exact moment, however, there’s not much the rescue workers can do. Gotta wait for the storm to pass. In the meantime, the people in that area will have to rely on luck, intelligence, and courage.
Like others, my thoughts are with them.

Any Dem within reach of a microphone who doesn’t remind people that the GOP wants to gut NOAA and FEMA deserves to be fired. These are verifiable facts about budgets proposals, unlike the welfare lie that is made-up claim after made-up claim.

At least sargent and sully are asking the same question.

@Hill Dweller: Both sides didn’t do it, therefore it didn’t happen.

Why is CNN trying to downplay their African-American camera-woman getting peanuts thrown at her during the Republican convention?
They’re trying to come up with a way to spin it as a “both sides” do it story.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques:
Very nice. I am so stealing this.
Sympathies for the people of New Orleans and others affected by the storms.

@Hill Dweller:
He was just trying to give relief supplies to what he thought was a NOLA refugee.
ExurbanMom
I’m still trying to figure out how Chris Christie could say “we tell the truth to voters” in front of Romney and his team who have paid for many airings of the “welfare” ad that is a complete lie.
Fave juxtaposition of last night: Ann Romney: “I want to talk to you about love.” Chris Christie: “We shouldn’t want love, we should want respect.”
Okay……
Nice thematic unity there, GOP. Well done.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques:
Win.
Anyway, really glad that so far NO is holding together. What happened in 2005 has sort of… disappeared down the memory hole.

@Hill Dweller: Reporting it would be playing the race card.

@ExurbanMom:
You gotta lie to the sheeple for their own good, doncha know.

@Hill Dweller:
I’ve been wondering about a bunch of pretty highly-paid people sitting around conference rooms trying to decide how to handle it.
A good news story would be how the GOP owns the racist, homophobic, climate-change denying, religiously bigoted demographic.
ruemara
Glad to hear things are holding up. Keeping my fingers crossed that there’s minimal damage.

Anyone who hasn’t read Tbogg’s posts on Ann Romney and Chris Christie needs to get over there, post haste. The man is a genius of our time.

It is pretty bad south of NOLA and outside levee protections. Over 150 people rescued thus far from flooded homes in Braithwaite & surrounding areas. We haven’t lost power yet, but the northshore didn’t start getting really slammed till today.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques:
This should SO be a tag line.
Sad that it’s true.

One of our cats is missing. It’s been a week now-bad sign. I took the week off to do some stuff around the house and go to the state fair and all I’ve done is run around putting up flyers and looking for a small orange cat in a world that is suddenly full of orange cats.
This sucks.

Just checked a link in a Salon comment to Youtube which at the moment (the link) is not working any more. At the RNC a rep from Puerto Rico was called to give a report and the floor erupted in shouts of “USA! USA!”, shouting at her and preventing her from speaking; real pandemonium and an atmosphere not unlike 1964 response to Rockefeller. Somebody should get that link here (I don’t know how).
It is prime material for an ad in NY, NJ, FL, and anywhere else with a substantial Hispanic voting population. It is also rather scary.
OGLiberal
@Corner Stone: They left a week ago and the trip was planned for months.

@jrosen: This is it:
http://gawker.com/5938699/heres-video-of-the-gop-convention-booing-the-delegate-from-puerto-rico
But it’s been updated to say that they may have been booing something related to Ron Paul. I’m not sure I buy that and it sure looks like Priebus thought they were booing her.
Felanius Kootea
@jrosen: Here’s a link to the video.
A Kos diary says they were reacting to Ron Paul’s Maine delegates being unseated, but the optics are pretty bad.

@SiubhanDuinne: hello.
So some of my NOLA fam stayed and some left for Isaac. My moms says she woke up Monday morning and got this feeling of de ja vu and told my sister she didn’t want to ride it out and she wanted to go to Baton Rouge by my grandmother, so they went on their way. They probably already made it too. My lil cuz said his mom decided to stay in NOLA, but heck he got his own car, so he took him, another cousin and my baby Maddie and said deuces. One lesson my fam (especially the younger fam) learned from Katrina, betta safe than sorry. My dad rignt now lives in Hammond and so him along with my stepsister. My cousin Claudia (who has my 2 male godkids) and her husband and kids are going to Baton Rouge too. Claudia’s youngest has asthma really bad and if they lost power they would be unable to get her her treatements, so she’s heading to a friends house in Baton Rouge too. My cousin Raymond and his family were preparing to head out as well. Not surprisingly, the older fam are gonna stay and I told ’em all to just be safe.
Like I said it’s always better to be safe than sorry in these cases.
So right now all my fam is safe and sound

Buried at the end of this somewhat dumb NYTimes story about the upcoming Seal Team member’s book on the bin Laden raid is this little nugget:
http://nyti.ms/Qx1nDA
“Bissonnette’s real name was first revealed by
Fox News and confirmed to the AP.
Jihadists on al-Qaida websites have posted purported photos of the author, calling for his murder.”
If that doesn’t just sum up Fox “patriotism”–way to go Ailes & co!
Raven
@lamh35: Great!
trollhattan
I think this would be a good day for Obama to visit a Brownie troop.
Mnemosyne
@tomvox1:
Okay, I realize I’m dumb, but I’m really not getting what the disconnect is between the two stories:
So Bissonnette says they shot a guy who turned out to be Bin Laden when he looked out of the door of the bedroom and started to duck back in because they thought he might be going for a weapon. The government says the SEALs shot Bin Laden when he looked out of the door and then started to duck back into the bedroom because they thought he might be going for a weapon.
Yeah, still not getting what the horrible, horrible concealment and lying was that the Obama administration did about this operation.
Felanius Kootea
@tomvox1: Ugh – now that SEAL will spend the rest of his life looking over his shoulder and hoping his family is safe.
PurpleGirl
@lamh35: This is good to hear.
In another vein: Since Isaac seems to have by-passed Tampa, will the godbothers claim that they were favored by the sky being and so the storm didn’t hit them.
Mnemosyne
Also, too the name “Bissonnette” couldn’t help but make me think of this classic film.
“Vegetable man! Vegetable gentleman!”

You should see all their demerit badges.

@Mnemosyne: I agree. The whole article is trying to make something out of nothing. Seal Teams don’t do Miranda & there’s not that much daylight between the Admin’s account & this guys, just more (purported) specifics over how it went down.

Not to slight anyone but I have to say:
Damn you Hurricane Isaac for making Tamron Hall put on more layers of clothing!!
