Ventured out to the gym this evening and got caught in an intense downpour with lots of thunder, lightning, and road-ponding that slowed even the maniacs on Route 128 to a crawl. Our thunder-phobic rescue dog Zevon was so upset with us he could barely eat his dinner; this is the same dog who didn’t mind multiple transformer explosions and a (small) brushfire fifty feet down the block last night. #Firstworldproblems. Still hoping that our friends in Hoboken are all okay, not to mention everybody else in the area…
Who’s got more FrankenSandy stories to share? Or anything else they want to talk about?
Corner Stone
I haven’t been too high on him in the past, but it seems Ghengis has made favorable comments about “not” killing every third male child in our village.
So I’m considering voting for him.

I now have two stories that are completely finished. I’ll try to sell them at some point, but for the moment I just want to get people reading them. So here they are. Feel free to share them with others. All I ask is that you let them know who I am and that I will have other work forthcoming.
These are both in the genre of magical realism. That means that they are set in the real world and the world primarily operates by the rules that we are familiar with. It adds one or two elements of magic that are used to highlight parts of the universe we live in. It’s sort of Fantasy Light.
“The Spots of al Fahad” is set in the Holy Land shortly after the First Crusade and is the story of an English knight looking for a new life. It’s about 30 pages long in 10 point type.
“Living After Noon” is modern and covers one afternoon in the life of three individuals, one lucky, one not and one a down and out deity. It’s about 4 pages long.
Edit: And many thanks to jacypods for editing them. “Living After Noon” in particular would look nothing like it does now without her help.

For Mrs. Cole: Chincoteague ponies thought to be safe, though island took a beating in hurricane
Eight foals were safeguarded at the fairgrounds; older ponies headed for higher ground. It’s hoped they came through fine. Fire Department personnel opened gates around the island so the ponies could roam and escape rising water.
General Stuck
I had a good day today, as days go for going right. When that happens usually tomorrow turns to shit. We’ve had gorgeous weather with cool nights. And my heater decided to just quit, and the apt manager and an electrician have been working on it since last Friday. And today they gave up and installed a brand spanky new one. All it took was for the electrician to utter the word “short”.
And the counter top water distiller arrived and now I can make my own distilled H20. Almost feel guilty with all the suffering back east, but then George Bush and his FEMA hack brownie could be running things.

From the Orange County Register: A Cal State Fullerton engineering prof thinks the math favors President Obama. Predicts a three point lead in popular vote.

Smiling Mortician
@Elizabelle: His popular vote looks about right, but I think he’s off on the EV. He says Obama 286. I’m going with 303 (I think O gets NH and VA).

In Cobble Hill/Brooklyn Hts., Brooklyn. The winds were intense but we didn’t flood. Some minor tree damage. Kept our power. Internet is still dodgy. Some restaurants opened today and they were packed with people with cabin fever fatigue.
My office is in Tribeca and has no electricity. Once that is up, I’ll have to walk/bike to work as they said it could take up to 45 days to fix the flooded parts of the subway. (They may get the non-flooded parts operational in 4-5 days.)

@Smiling Mortician:
I think Obama’s been leading (albeit slimly) in NH pretty much the whole time. Virginia’s much more of a toss-up.

Looks like Republicans want to piss away some more money here in PA.

@Elizabelle: Meh, nothing new there. He/she has taken the worst case scenario (FL,VA & NC going to mittbot) and sez Obama still wins. Pfft. we already knew that.
Spaghetti Lee
@lacp:
“Pennsylvania’s a swing state! That’s why George Herbert Walker Bush will win it this year!”
PeakVT
@Elizabelle: I’m not sure about that model, as he’s only predicting the two-candidate share. Plus some of the odds of winning seem off – OR, KS, NE, SD are too low, while IA and IN are too high. And overall, the 52-48% split seems optimistic. I’d like to see 52-48%, as that would basically be a blowout relative to the current polling. But I think the PV will be nail-biter. OTOH the EV split is about right – I think Obama will take NH.
amk
So pos is now ef ?
Smiling Mortician
@Spaghetti Lee: Agreed. Virginia’s the swingiest. Still . . . I think it stays blue.

Alan Alda won California on West Wing. Other than the fact that we live in the real world, why can’t Mitt?

LOL, Romney’s desperate attempts to find a path to victory that doesn’t include Ohio are pretty funny. Wisconsin! Minnesota! Pennsylvania! And Obama simply buys some more ad time in those markets, and sends Bill there, and that’s the end of that.
I’m enjoying this last week of the election. Plus, I got to watch the Heat stomp the Celts tonight, which was fun, and the Miami fans trolled the sh*t out of the Celts players, which was hilarious.
joes527
@Elizabelle: the orange county register had that?
I’m amazed I haven’t been hearing heads azploding from san Diego.
Humanities Grad
@lacp:
Not sure why the Romney campaign would want to do that.
First of all, recent polling in Pennsylvania hasn’t been all that close. It’s not a blowout by any means, but neither is it close enough that a last-minute ad blitz is likely to turn the state red.
Moreover, any scenario in which Romney wins Pennsylvania is a scenario in which he doesn’t need Pennsylvania (i.e., if conditions are such that he can win there, it wouldn’t matter anyway).
Didn’t the McCain campaign also wind up getting sucked into making a late play for Pennsylvania in ’08?
Smiling Mortician
@amk: I think he was ef yesterday too. Lazy, he is. I think we deserve a fresh nym daily.

Oh, Christ, I woke it up. Sorry, folks.

want us to win the house, w/o it it’s two more years of watching Boehner cry, Cantor smirk and assorted asshats of the Tea persuasion doing what they can to ensure that no whitey gets left behind when the Rapture cometh

The Dangerman
@Elizabelle:
It’s interesting he uses Rasmussen (a known hack) and YouGov (which has had some weird numbers here and there).
I think Obama wins Virginia and loses Iowa (that 82% number means I’m probably FOS). I probably give Romney New Hampshire, too. I think that means I’m at 293.

@PeakVT: Thanks a bunch. Will check it out.

@PeakVT: About ETA – Wow, a veritable list of pos there.

Another satisfied pie filter customer here.
ETA: I stopped by Hannity tonight for a few minutes (all I could stand). He was pushing that Romney is a lock to win HARD. There are going to be some really unhappy Hannity viewers next week. Shit, don’t even look at the polls; which candidate is acting like he’s losing right now and has his hair on fire?
TR
Obama is spending $1.6 million in Penn, while Romney and the SuperPACs ate spending $5.4 million. They’re just throwing money down the drain in hopes that ad buys will swing a state where Obama has consistently had a 4-6 point lead and one of the best Dem infrastructures in the nation.
They must be as stupid as our sad little troll here.

Teh Google led me to WPTV, an NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, FLA. Someone with the same name is a “Multimedia Journalist” for them. From Duh Bronx originally, also a Mets fan (poor bastard), worked in Rochester, NY for a few years.
Of course, there is always the possibility that his Twitter account is a DougJ spoof, a la Doug’s CokieRoberts fun. Another possibility is that someone is feeding him bogus info, in the hopes of suppressing Dem votes. (Giving the Dems false confidence, which leads to “Eh, I don’t need to vote, it’s in the bag” sentiments.)
Anyway, long-winded way of saying it MIGHT be legit.
Come to think of it, I probably could have saved a bunch of keystrokes. Oh well.

Two phone calls today:
1:00pm, My daughter in law goes into labor. I’ll be a first time Gramma any minute! Flying up to the Bay Area on Thursday to meet my new grandson.
3:00pm, Ex sister in law (still a good friend) calls to tell me her house on the NJ shore was, by all counts, destroyed. She ignored the evac orders (arrgh), spent the night in the attic, but is safely at her Dad’s house now and for a long time to come.
A day I’ll remember, indeed.
