National soundcheck day

So this will be the last day ever to have the 3 numbers be the same. Unless the Mayan calendar interpretation that the end of the world is upon us this month is true. Then I guess we start back to 1-1-01 after that happens.
cathyx
Huh?
cathyx
This is weird. Did the Mayan calendar end already?

The Best Beer in the World?
Drink Up
Beer aficionados are pouncing at the rare opportunity to buy one of the world’s most elusive and revered beers for the first – and perhaps only – time in the United States.
It is called Westvleteren XII, and it is often hailed as the “world’s best beer” by reviewers and fans.
Westvleteren XII is produced by Trappist monks in Belgium and sold at the abbey of Saint Sixtus in the Belgian countryside. The beer can usually only be purchased by reservation at the abbey – and reservations are extremely hard to come by.
But when the abbey found itself hurting for money for an expensive renovation, the monks reluctantly made the decision to sell the beer outside of the walls of the monastery on a one-time-only basis.
“I think it will be the last [time],” Westvleteren Brewery spokesman Mark Bode told NPR. “They say, ‘We are monks, we don’t want to be too commercial. We needed some money to help us buy the new abbey and that’s it,’ Back to normal again.”
Beginning today, limited quantities of the beer are being sold in the U.S. and abroad. A number of stores have been sent “bricks” of the beer, which include six bottles and two glasses from the monastery. The gift box retails for $84.99.
“The phone has been ringing off the hook,” Megan McBrayer, manager at New York City’s Beer Table Pantry, told ABCNews.com. She said the store received 24 cases of the beer and has already sold many of them.
McBrayer said beer lovers are taken with “the whole mystique about it and the rarity of it.”
“It consistently rates as one of the best beers in the world,” she said. “It’s been something that [beer lovers] have wanted for a long time, but it’s been completely unattainable.”

@cathyx: You’re just not that bright, are you? (As you’ve proven amply on previous threads)
January 1st, 2101. 1/1/1.
This will happen every century until the heat death of the universe.

I see a title of the 2013 Balloon Juice Calendar in the BJ store but there is no data under the title when clicked.
I want to throw money at BJ but would like to see what is in it (and how much it is).
kindness
@cathyx: Not yet. the 5025 (something like that, their long year calendar) year cycle ends 12/21/12.
Maude
@kindness:
It’s not on sale yet.
John said it was almost done. I think squeezing Tunch in is taking some time.

I knew word press would have something to do with the end of the world.
waratah
I just refreshed and things look normal again.
I was wondering if the end came early and I did not get to have
my quiet evening birthday celebration.

I’m getting up the courage to read this story that just showed up on TPM front page today (probably need a little nip of serious hard likker first):

The Donner Party.

@JPL: This new widget must have quite the strange bug. FYWP.
waratah
@JPL: I am using chrome, I had come to the conclusion I was the problem as it happened every time I posted.
MikeJ
@Yutsano: The bug is in the edit widget, which is why you only see the gibberish after you comment.

So if I comment can I see broken blog be broken? Does it only break for comments and not for lurkers?

@MikeJ:
You know why sound guys only say “1 2 1 2 1 2,” right?
Because on “3” you lift.

@jl: From the article:
It will come as news to many Latinos that they aren’t white.
dmsilev
@jl:
Explains why there’s been a recent uptick in ‘white women need to start having more babies’ columns from conservative blatherers.
Yutsano
@MikeJ: I’d prefer to not open that particular can of worms thankyewverymuch.

Yep I see this in my comment and the 3 comments above mine

On tonight’s agenda: making latkes. But I couldn’t find caviar at either of the nearby grocery stores. Sour cream and caviar are the proper accompaniments to latkes (not applesauce as some blasphemers suggest).

When does Bowl Season start?

It looks like American conservatives aren’t the only ones with a talent for mismanaging elections for fun and profit.

BTW, here’s the “fix” for the problem. Doesn’t really fix it, just stops php from displaying the error. That’s WordPress quality!

@Punchy: Dec. 15th. 2 games. Nevada v. Arizona and Toledo v. Utah State.
Unless you mean another “bowl” for the “high holiday” season.

@Maude:
Well to be fair, Donner Party jokes are a matter of taste. Some people find them hard to swallow.

@cathyx:Notwithstanding the Mayan caveat, it is just the last time this century. We can do it all over again in the next century just as we would have done it in 1912. But Americans probably didn’t notice since they had just elected Woodrow Wilson as President who had huge changes in mind, e.g. the currently topical fiscal cliff is largely about the income tax which was instituted by Wilson among many other things.
General Stuck
I would like to just take a moment to thank that 39 percent of white folk who went against the majority of their tribe, and the rank stupidity and other bad things that caused 59 percent of white voters to vote for Mitt Romney, a candidate with no soul nor shred of intellectual honesty, with so much as a morsel of compassion for those less fortunate than him. And erstwhile, chock full of crass white supremacy, real or feigned. WE might be white, but we ain’t all mean and crazy.
cathyx
Fun fact: I live right by the mall that had that shooting yesterday in Oregon. A friend of mine’s daughter was working there when it happened and saw it all.
cathyx
Firefox has the word press problem too. It comes and goes and it has come again.
Cassidy
Very excited for this movie.
MikeJ
@cathyx: IT will show up every time you comment, until John or his minions fix it.
to fix:
find wp-config.php in the root of your wordpress install.
Either edit it on the server if you have shell access or download it to your local machine.
Open it with a plain text editor (like notepad on windows).
Add the line:
@ini_set(‘display_errors’, 0);
Save the file as plain text.
If needed, reupload it to the server.
Presto.

This is a very cool “Year in Review” done by Google. Not only that, but the music for the video is really fucking good.

I just read that Track/Trick/Trig/Tack–whatever Palin has filed for divorce from his wife of 19 months. They have a 16-month-old daughter. I’m torn between saying something snarky (at Sarah’s expense) and hoping things work out for the ex- and the baby. Don’t know the reasons for the split. Both husband and wife are probably young, under-educated, and spoiled. Oh, well….
WereBear
We just went out to dinner to celebrate, something Mr WereBear can’t always do, so we are thrilled each time.
We triumphed on 11/8/12. I still haven’t stopped celebrating that!

$84.99 for a six pack of beer? Dang! My palette isn’t sufficiently discriminating and my upbringing too low rent to be able to appreciate such a beer.
Cheers to those who can and will appreciate it though.

love the fact that there has never been a Ryan budget, a Romney recovery plan and the Dems put out release after release with details, with specifics and the press just keeps promoting the same horseshit braying from the GOP.
Comrade Jake
@Higgs Boson’s Mate: $85 is a lot cheaper than a plane flight to Belgium.

@ThatLeftTurnInABQ: I had to read this twice to get it. What a gloriously sick joke.
You know how you can name your iPod? I named mine Titanic. It’s syncing now.

@Tonal Crow: No need to wait for 3012, 2112 will have one with a crappy album for a soundtrack.

@MattR:
Quite right. I’ll acknowledge that as one of my more stupid posts, though others here might disagree.

My friend is having a cool cookie party/open house tonight (12 is her favorite number) and I’m stuck at home with the flu. Oh, and I was unable to sell any of my stuff at the company craft fair because of the fucking FLU!
At this point, I’m hoping the Mayans were right, because so far 2012 has been a crappy year and I’m not sure I’m going to make it to 1/1/13.

I was hep to this MAYAN APOCALYPSE way back – in the 90’s, man. But then I ran with a new agey crowd and there was all kinds of mystical explanations to everything. It was kinda awesome, and looking back now from my perch of stone hard scientific empiricism, I grow a tad wistful.
Just a tad, though, mind you. I’ll take the truth – even if harsh, painful, and/or depressing – over myth or knowing lie any day. Except for Sunday. On that day I rest.
redshirt
@MikeJ: You rule.

Well, we’re watching the 121212 concert, and I went to the donate link, and got an error so like the FYWP error I was shocked.
I tried again, and I guess on second thought I may have contributed twice as much as I expected, which isn’t the end of the world…This is my first exposure to modern rap, not as bad as I feared, but not as good as Bruce, or Eric, or even the Who.
Is this Kanye West?
At least there’s more music to come. There is art in this act, it isn’t just chanting, and he’s political too…
oh well, wish me luck, and g-night
