The buttonless trackpad on the recent Macbook Pro blows. Not a fan of the mushy keyboard, either. OTOH, the Retina display really is insanely gorgeous.

Oh my God, I HATE my roommate. So very glad she is moving out this week.
Today was the big day for her move. Naturally, she told me this was the week but she said nothing about when the truck was coming. So I found out about the big move before I could make other plans for me and the dog so we could avoid it. And I couldn’t improvise plans at this point because they parked me in with the truck.
And in her infuriating way, when I discussed it with her she simply asked, “Oh. Did you want to go somewhere?”
Ever since she tried to fuck with my memories of Kate, I’ve had about as short a fuse as there is with her. She makes me feel a crazy level of angry.

Hello darlin’. Listening will have to wait until I’m free from the slave of grinding away at work I’m afeared. But cough drops and slight grumpiness is paying some dividends.

A depressed update on the last depressed rant. I felt better about it after talking here last time, so I beg your pardon for doing so again. After a week of limbo, I have finally heard back from my union rep, who has secured for me the right to basically leave without the permanent black mark I might have had, since my supervisor apparently never intended to have me continue. I was never made aware of that, nor was I given the support that’s supposed to happen in such cases, but. Water under the bridge.
However, I still don’t have word, and won’t until monday, on whether or not he’ll write a letter of recommendation. Since it’s a small site, I basically have no supervisor other than him, and my one colleague and I disagree on methods. I had an application all filled out and ready to go for a nice local job, but I needed that word… and it evaporated over the weekend. Someone else got it, I’m sure. I’m fairly sure that, as we get out of the hiring season and on, more will disappear while I’m in limbo.
Meanwhile, my doctor isn’t really sure whether or not I’m really capable of working any more. It’s not one thing, it’s a combination of various different things. When I was young, it was just the asthma, allergies, ADHD, and depression (big shock there), but by the time I was in high school, it was discovered I have superventricular tachycardia arrythmia, and unsupervised weightlifting plus multiple miles-long hikes home with 50lbs (I weighed it once, I used to be so proud…) of books in my backpack left me with back spasms and frequent pain.
Most of it never really got under control. Then, just as I was working on my thesis, I flipped my car and I was in bad shape but mobile. I had to switch to my current career to maintain continuity of health insurance. Then, in the last part of my first year, I tripped over my laptop power cords and BAM, slipped disc. That was about six years ago, give or take. Along the way, I’ve been diagnosed with insomnia and sleep apnea both, to add to the fun.
The pain’s been getting worse and worse. My medications for all of these stupid body failings, plus the ever-worsening obesity (genetic predisposition, stress eating, and enforced immobility aren’t fun for that), have started to interact badly. Recently, I was up to the legal limit on several different painkillers, which managed to mostly correct the pain– down to a 2 on the 1 to 10 scale… and my doctor had to cut two of them out because I was getting induced temporary narcolepsy, and the side effects were messing with blood pressure, the ADHD, awareness, perception, etc. My psych thought that with all of the meds, I was also hitting dopamine blockade, and probably still am, since I have a number of seratonurgic/SSRI meds still. Plus now I usually spend the last two hours of a 6-hour med cycle and the first of the next in pretty severe pain. I’m in the middle of that right now, and I’m in agony just sitting down. Meanwhile, there’s a chance that one of the meds I’m on will badly interact with my SVT and start the cycle of interactions that had me off work for a month all over again.
I’m scared. I don’t know if my supervisor believes it’s possible for me to be impressive enough in the next two and a third months to keep my job; I don’t know if he’ll give even a ‘good enough’ letter of recommendation to help me get a new one. At my worst, I don’t know whether or not I deserve one, or at least, whether or not I’m fit for one. The union rep says that unless my reason for leaving work is written down as ‘for budgetary reasons,’ there’s no way I can get unemployment in WA. My doctor says I might qualify for Disability because of the combination of problems and the fact that they keep interacting and cycling back and forth, but I can’t believe that’s likely, especially these days. And again, I don’t know if I deserve the help. If there’s a reason to help me.
I feel like I’ve utterly failed my wife, my education, and my parents. Like every advantage was broken, and it’s all my fault. If I don’t get a job, we’ll lose the house. I can only hope that we could get a trailer on her mom’s property because without space for the dogs and cats, we’re going to have to give them away. Meanwhile, she’s stuck at a job with horrible, borderline abusive supervisors, and one of our most recent hopes for a job for her closed applications on Friday, and we haven’t heard anything back other than that they had received her application.
I keep trying to believe that there are reasons to keep trying. My wife is the most important one. But I don’t know what I can do; I don’t know what I’m good for any more.
Again, I’m sorry that I’ve imposed on you all looking for catharsis. I know it’s amazingly self-indulgent, but I appreciate the forum and the access; thank you for your time.

I posted this on an earlier thread, but it was suggested by a fellow commenter I put it in an open thread. This is an acquaintance of mine, looking to help his son-in-law win a handicapped accessible vehicle. Story and link below; it’s free to vote.
“They are running a contest where a new accesible van is being awarded. My son-in law Steve Herbst is a finalist. Steve was paralyzed in a high school football accident and is confined to a wheelchair. It’s inspirational to see how he leads a full life in spite of this. He married my daughter 11 years ago and he is the father of twins. He works full-time and is involved with the kids sports leagues as well as organizations to benefit others in similar situations. Not unexpectedly Steve’s condition has worsened lately making it impossible for him to drive his specially equipped van. The newer vans have advanced controls that would enable Steve to once again drive and regain more of his independence. Here’s where I need your help. The winner will be determined by votes to the mobility awareness site. I have posted the link. Anyone who can spare a few minutes please click in and cast a vote for Steve. It doesn’t cost anything and your help will be greatly appreciated.

@Gex:
Jeez, Gex, I feel for you. For a while I took in a lot of female roommates (when my husband was lost in AFG) but that kinda ended after one (who was working as a stripper) called me in the middle of the night to bail her out of jail.
I said (sleepily) “Isn’t there anyone ELSE you can call?” but of course there was not.
I bailed her out of jail and she repaid me by taking off with my purple spandex pants (disco!) and a beautiful silver and turquoise concho belt buckle I had lent her for her stripping act.
Shit, I even had to take her 4 yr old kid to San Fran with me (I was going there anyway) and hand her off to the ex-husband. Why she would entrust ME with that task is a mystery.
Roommates can be – kinda tricky.
@Brother Shotgun of Sweet Reason: See following comment. I swear, my life has been one weird trip.

@MathInPA:
Did you ask your union rep what disability coverage you have through them? You don’t necessarily have to go straight to permanent SSDI — the union probably offers something that would let you get your medical problems under control that’s short of having to go on permanent disability. At this point, you might almost be better off going on disability leave rather than trying to stick out the last couple of months because then your current supervisor can’t give you a bad report — any report would have to be suspended until you return to the job.
It would suck if it ends up that you are physically incapable of working anymore but you know what? It happens. That’s why disability insurance and SSDI exist — because people need them.

@Omnes Omnibus: I suppose I should apologise for swearing in front of our dear lady Sarah. If the bawdy old broad wasn’t as foul-mouthed as a tavern of sailors with a fresh supply of rum. And if necessary she’ll just take a switch to me.

Holy shit. My mother’s friend just sent an incredibly damaging email on Obama. Seems his daughter, now hold on cause you’re not going to believe this, took a vacation to Mexico!!!! Yes, you read that right. Malia Obama went to Mexico as part of a class school trip and secret service went along. Escandolo!
Funny thing is, the email contained a link to snopes which clearly said it was a class trip and not a tax payer sponsored vacation for Malia and 25 of her friends like the rest of the email, but oh well, why let facts get in the way. Also, easter egg hunt, sequester, blah blah.
My Mother’s friend is circulating this email because the people need to know! Yeesh. Oh yeah, this was also from 2012, but she’s in her 60s so using email is not her strong suit.

How’s he feel about enforcing the parents rights to control their straight children’s reproduction? Give me grandchildren Now, you breeders! Why the fuck did I raise youmif it wasn’t for the kiddies. @lamh35:
Well we certainly wouldn’t want to interfere with a parent’s ability to torture their children, or set them up for a lifetime of therapy to recover from the damage they might undergo as part of ex-gay therapy.
Christie is a shit sandwich served on artisal bread instead of white bread so people think he’s a new breed of refined Republican. It’ll be interesting to watch him juggle a re-election campaign in which he cannot be a lunatic, and a Presidential race in which he all but has to be crazy to win the nomination.

@Gex: I had a friend in college who had a roommate who would
borrowsteal the little non perishable packaged food she used to keep on her side of the room. Mac &cheese/ramens etc. So one day my friend was really thirsty and couldn’t be bothered to go downstairs to get a soda so she “borrowed” said roommate’s can of soda from a 6 pack from the fridge, fully intending to replace it the next day. The roommate came in and noticed the can of soda was gone and reamed my friend out. People are crazy.Also too, I went to Rummy’s tweet replies from yesterday. It’s quite a satisfying read of several inventive insults –
Had to laugh at this one – “You have a lot of balls, you should try putting one in your mouth and 2 in your hands so you shut up and stop typing shit.”
@Nicole: Done – I’m always impressed by quads who end up being working productive people because they have such a tough road to hoe and so many can’t do it.

@Hal: I am not worried about Christie in ’16. He’s too thin skinned and he couldn’t even beat Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical match up poll at the height of his popularity after Sandy etc. The guy who worries me a little is Scott Walker. He doesn’t come across as a whack job like the others that they’re talking about and he’ll get people going on the “evil public unions” who get paid $100,000 retirement packages blah blah blah…

@MathInPA:
You know that you can always vent around here. You will often find that people give very good advice, as well , like Mnemosyne did.. Hang in there.
MathInPA
@Mnemosyne: A lot of that depends on what he has to say when we meet on monday with the rep, and what my doctor says. I think one of the scariest things when I’m not in a constant depressive loop is this: my medical issues and the treatments for them are wrapping around and around and feeding off each other, and it seems to get worse every year. Surgery was supposed to fix the back problem, for example, and instead, I’m just as bad off.
My preference is to keep working. I really, really hope the doctor says I can.

@mai naem: Scott Walker will get pummeled. His handling of the Wisconsin economy has been a disaster.
Suffern ACE
@mai naem: I hope so. He has this damn brand around here of being the straight talker who can make tough decisions. ARRGGH. Anyway. McCain was the straight talker, too. It appeals to some, but hopefully not many. Americans actually don’t like their politicians to scold THEM. Now other people, you can scold about their t-bone steaks and lack of family values. But us salt of the earth people who are the backbone of what made this country great get a little annoyed when we find out they’re talking about us.
