Capito won, meaning WV is now Alabama politically for the near future. Just waiting for Rahall to lose at this point, which at this point is just a matter of inevitability. The only thing in question now is how long before Manchin becomes an Independent or leaves DC to run for governor, paving the way for Raese or McKinley to become Senators.
Scott Brown lost to Shaheen and the odious Corbett was kicked out of PA governorship, so that is good.
Penguins are winning, though.

GA is now last in about every measure possible and yet they still elect the repubs that brought them to this place. Oh well!
All I have to say is

Texas Dem
Anybody know what’s going in VA? Gillespie is ahead with 75 percent of the vote counted! It looks like the more rural (GOP) parts of the state are in, so this may not mean much.
JPL
John, There is no election cycle that’s good to quit drinking. Quitting drinking is something you do for yourself.
Anne Laurie
Look at it this way: If you were still drinking, tonight’s news would probably have put you into a coma, or at least a nasty bout of pancreatitis.
So, go watch the Pens, and then turn in. Tomorrow is another day!
PsiFighter37
Mike Rounds wins easily. That’s a lot of money pissed away on that GOTV drive from GOS…a good cause, but no way that was ever going to be a win for Weiland.
So far, it’s Republicans +3 in the Senate (WV, AR, SD). Figure MT is definitely going to go GOP…so we have a margin of 2 seats.
Not a fan of Colorado being too ‘early’ – not a great sign.
Peters crushed Land, but doesn’t seem to have coattails for Schauer against Snyder.
Elizabelle
@Texas Dem:
That’s my guess. The big counties get tabulated last. Also, Warner had the unusual problem of being up 7+ points in the polls. It can be hard to get voters out without a sense of urgency.
I’m interested to see what the final spread ends up.
Dave Brat won Eric Cantor’s seat near Richmond, VA. 60% GOP advantage in that district; no surprise.
Helen
@Texas Dem: VA means nothing until NOVA is in. And they always come in late.
SFAW
Well, I was considering retiring to Maine.
But since Scottie the Loosah will probably find he once spent a night there as a pre-teen, thus making it “home” for him, I’m a-thinking I’ll wait to see if he runs against Angus.
That fucking dork. (Scottie, not Angus, of course.)
Gin & Tonic
@SFAW: How’s LePage doing?
MomSense
Fuck Elliot Cutler.
Morzer
@SFAW:
“When I said New Hampshire, I meant Maine. It just came out New Hampshire.”
Should be a real vote-winner of a campaign slogan.
Davis X. Machina
@Gin & Tonic: only 5% in on the Press Herald site.
Texas Dem
. NC also looks good for the Dems, based on the results so far. Anyone have a feel for how that race is going?
redshirt
#quitdrinking for Michaud
Valdivia
so I went away for an hour and nothing is as bad as I thought. The only one that is a little closer than predicted is Va but that always goes until really late. I am still confident Warner will win though. NC and NH looking great. yay.
Keith G
Well I haven’t (quit drinking) and tonight’s sip is Maker’s 46 served neat.
This is just a quick drive by as I am not surveying the returns or the analysis. I am going to try for an election news embargo for at least two days.
raven
Get ready for Jody Hice.
khead
You forgot the carpetbagger from MD, Alex Mooney.
SFAW
@Gin & Tonic:
Crazy/Stupid/Evil as ever.
Oh, you mean the election? See comments 10 and 12 above.
I’ve about fucking had it with these holier-than-thou third-party candidates.
PsiFighter37
@efgoldman: Maybe Mark Warner isn’t as popular as Mark Warner thought.
Hopefully this serves as a wakeup call to him, and he does something more useful in the Senate than figuring out what ‘gangs’ to be part of.
SFAW
@Morzer:
Outstanding comment.
p.a.
Iowa news? What are these WV and Ky Repubs gonna do, legislate natural gas out of existence?
FlipYrWhig
@efgoldman: I voted in VA this morning. Senator, Congressman, and some sort of bullshit initiative about exempting from taxes dead veterans’ wives who don’t remarry. That was it.
Cain
Looking forward to some legal pot in Oregon (not like it wasn’t accessible before!) :)
Valdivia
looks like the pot initiative will win in dc
Deecarda
@Texas Dem:
I’m in NCIS and was surprised to stand in line for over 30 minutes in a midterm, of course I was probably one of the few Dem votes. I live in a rural county, our House rep is the notorious Virginia Foxx.
mai naem
Maybe Gillespie had a really good GOTV effort. He did work for Dubbya after all. Was there a minimum wage prop in VA?
Shana
@FlipYrWhig: And the annual transportation bond in Fairfax County, but that wouldn’t count in Arlington/Alexandria as they’re not Fairfax County. BTW, my R-leaning precinct had about 25% turnout, slightly higher than expected, and was pretty steady all day long, with higher turnouts before and after work (which isn’t always the case for after work) and virtually no lines since we’ve moved to paper ballots exclusively.
Deecarda
@Deecarda:
That was NC, though I might as well go watch NCIS.
F
Looks like VA is finally starting to close up.
skerry
@p.a.: No way nat gas will be legislated out with all the fracking going on in WVa.
It’s a case of people not voting their own interests. And the Democrats not standing strong as democrats and helping people understand. The people voting for coal are voting for the coal companies, not the miners. But they don’t really see that.
I say this as the granddaughter of a WVa coal miner. And the cousin of a man with a buffalo in his yard because fracking has contaminated his drinking water. Not to mention the destruction of the roads due to fracking trucks. And the increase in traffic deaths. And the polluting of Charleston’s city water supply. Someone is making money, but they sure don’t live in WVa.
RaflW
Asshatery of the moment:
The Warner race is interesting. But comparing that to Franken? I guess Chuckie thinks Franken is still the SNL comedian who wrote that rude book about Limbaugh. Total seat-of-the-pants bullshit to think Franken was vulnerable.
GregB
Shaheen(D-NH) beats Brown(R-NH,MA).
RareSanity
Not watching a second of the election coverage.
Voted last week, now I’m watching the ESPN 30 for 30 on the Hernandez brothers and their story of defecting from Cuba to play baseball in America. How the Cuban government tried to intimidate them, how the whole thing affected them and their families…puts a lot of this stuff in perspective, and will probably keep my blood pressure down for the night.
It is an absolutely riveting story, it should be on Netflix soon for those of you that don’t have ESPN. I highly recommend it.
Helen
MSNBC says the Landrieu election in LA is going to a run off. Decision will be made in December.

@RareSanity: There is a non election thread upstream.

Oh, and at the MN SOS site, they have all the statewide candidates results. Very, very early returns, but the “Grassroots – Legalize Cannabis” ticket for governor is at 1.5%, while the libertarian ticket for gov is under 1%.
RareSanity
@raven:
Oh, my bad…I thought Cole may have been looking for something to take his mind off the election results.
Mike E
@Texas Dem: Still coming in, but Wake Co. SWEPT OUT all GOP county commissioners, going from 4-3 R to 7-0 D. Good riddance to bad trash including Jesse Helms’ son in law, mutha fucka!
MomSense
Fewer than 200 votes separating LePage and Michaud with 106 of 587 precincts in.
Cain appears to be slipping in CD2.

@efgoldman:
I completely agree and am adopting same approach….
(A glass or two of red wine will help however it goes ;-) )
RaflW
@Cole at top
I quit booze 12 years ago. But I just did serious damage to a tub of Kozy Shack chocolate pudding. Not the same buzz, but makes the election results go down smoother.
Elie
@MomSense:
It shouldn’t but yet always amazes me that anyone sane and of average intelligence could vote or LePage…
Shana
@RaflW: Fairfax County still isn’t in.
Steve in the ATL
Georgia is ugly tonight. Guess we are not so purple after all.
raven
@RareSanity: That 30 for 30 looks good, I still have the one on the Nicks on my DVR.
seefleur
@MomSense: with a chainsaw… and ala LePlague, without any lubrication.
BillinGlendaleCA
I feel for ya Cole, I quit drinkin’ right before the 2010 election. Stay strong.
RareSanity
@raven:
I’ve seen both.
They’re both really good for different reasons. This one about the Hernandez brothers is one of the best 30 for 30s is one of the most interesting ones I’ve seen since they started them.
I mean we know the superficial version of the older brother, El Duque, arriving after the younger brother Livan. But to hear the story of how he was treated by the Cuban government during that time after Livan left and when he was able to leave…then the story of what he went through to leave…man, powerful. Check it out.
Guarantee you will love it. The Knicks was good too, just in a different, more “entertaining” way. This one is more emotion/thought provoking.
seefleur
@efgoldman: Deer Isle, Tremont and Islesboro – all tiny coastal communities with a strong bent towards conservative-nutjob went with Michaud (Portland Press Herald election maps). So there’s hope – although the ultra RWNJ’s in central northern ME are likely to be problematic… There’s still hope. I hope.
tbone
We’re fucked. Looking worse than expected. Dems 48 in senate at best. Hickenlooper down in Colorado. Not good.
RaflW
It’s been a decade since I spent 3+ months living in New Mexico, but just saw on the twitt-box that NM seems to have gone R for their governor. Don’t know about the candidates, but NM has been relatively D.
Add in Udall in CO (as opposed to the Udall in NM), and I’m feeling seriously bummed about the mountain west. Hickenlooper is looking shaky, too. I’ve got a place out there, spend a chunk of the winter in Summit County (which will continue to be liberal).
Blergh. Just blergh!
RaflW
@tbone:
Just looked at county data for CO. One of my good friends lives in Colorado Springs. Its 2:1 GOP this cycle. I just couldn’t. He’s there for his tech job, but damn, I’d have to move to Denver if I was them…
tbone
@RaflW:
Best bumper sticker I’ve seen in a long time:
Keep Colorado Springs lame.
Mnemosyne (iPhone)
@RaflW:
I’m pretty sure the NM governor was already an R (Suzanne Martinez) and she doesn’t seem to have fucked up as badly as the Midwestern Repubs, so it’s not really a shock that she was re-elected. Incumbent’s advantage and all.
Adam
Christ, Walker’s going to win!?! Fuck there’s a lot of dumbass crackers in this state. Maybe I should just move to Vermont or something.
