Here’s a “God of Death” figure from South America:
I saw it in a museum last week. Creeped me right the fuck out.
Has anyone ever made sticky toffee pudding? If so, got a recipe to share?
I’d never heard of it until about a week ago, but a friend who doesn’t cook is homesick for it. I found lots of recipes online, but it’s always good to have a personal rec.

Dear god, it’s Valdivia.

@NotMax: I have an onyx tiki ashtray that my dad bought as a present for his mom one birthday. It looks a bit like a small altar for a still beating heart. It was something I remembered from my childhood and I could bear it going into the trash or being sold at auction for 25 cents.
Yatsuno
Never made a sticky toffee pudding (which is really a cake but semantics) but this easy looking good Scottish recipe might be worth giving a go.
Omnes Omnibus
If Yatsuno is right, I may be able to find one. There is a family recipe for a cranberry caramel thingie. I will see what I can do.
Betty Cracker
@Yatsuno: Sounds good!

GOP presidential candidates will sacrifice small children to that thing by the next election.

I haven’t heard of sticky toffee pudding, but if you’re looking for sticky date pudding, this recipe is quite good, but you need to add 1 tsp of vanilla extract to pudding and 1/2 tsp to the sauce. http://www.foodtolove.com.au/recipes/sticky-date-pudding-4773

Christ almighty, that thing looks just like Dick Cheney.
How could we have been so blind??

@Omnes Omnibus:
Valdivia the Terrible. Or does that avatar come out only for the World Cup?
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack: Don’t know. We have a women’s WC coming up; we should look into it.
ETA: I have a busy administrative day in front tomorrow, but I am not remotely sleepy. Tomorrow is likely to suck.

@Steeplejack: I’ve got an onyx altar thingie. Do you think it will help?
Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus:
I was out and about a lot on Thursday, then after the horror of the haircut I made the mistake of
nappingconking out from about 6:00 to 10:00. So I’m wide awake now but am looking at needing to be up for pre-trip prep about 6:30 or 7:00 at the very latest. Should go to bed in 15 minutes or so, but my will is weak.(Research says, and my experience has confirmed it for me, that sleep periods that are multiples of the 90-minute sleep cycle are the best. So, theoretically, you will feel better—more alert—after, say, six hours of sleep than after seven hours. If I go to bed around 2:00 or 2:15 I’ll be primed for wakeup at 6:30-6:45. Allegedly.)
Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus:
Definitely bring that.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack:
That has gotten me into so many good and bad things. So good and so bad.
@Steeplejack: It is pretty cool.
Steeplejack
Okay, I’m off to bed, knowing that I might well be back on here in 20 minutes from my phone. Damn.
Omnes Omnibus
@Steeplejack: You are able to resist the call of Bulldog Drummond? TCM attacked me with that when I got home.
Tenar Darell
Whoosh, Betty, scary statue. Made me think of a frog.
So, then I think of James Fallows saying, “Oh great Frog Monkey, there is no pot of boiling water here!” (Because, as he frequently points out, that frog and boiling water thing can’t happen unless you basically pith the frog).
Let’s pith that scary God of Death! Steeplejack, where’s your obsidian knife? Omnes, can you get a pot of water for the altar? Oh, and I’ll grab the fire starter.
Platonicspoof
From South America or Mexico?
Or do all gods of death share the same intense look?
Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus:
I watched part of one, but then the one that started at 10:45 EDT was so lame, even for me, that I bagged it. It was the one with John Barrymore chewing up all available scenery and doing ridiculous disguises.
Fritz Lang’s M is kicking off TCM’s Friday of noir at 6:00 a.m. “Summer of Darkness”: all noir every Friday in June and July. I think someone mentioned it in an earlier thread. If I weren’t traveling I would be burying myself in that.

@Tenar Darell:

For those who like noir – and old time radio (even some non-noir) – might I recommend Noir Dame?
Steeplejack
@Omnes Omnibus:
Damn it, now I’m stuck trying to think of the similar series that I like much better. It’s not The Falcon or The Lone Wolf. Oh, it’s Boston Blackie! I just thought of it as I was writing. Those are also pretty flimsy, but for some reason I like them better.
Thank God. That would have kept me awake. Er, ahem, yes, I really should be off.
Steeplejack
@NotMax:
Thanks, will check it out over the weekend.
Aleta
@NotMax: Blogging since Jan 17, 1922…

@Steeplejack
The Boston Blackie films are goofy larks. Flimsy, as you say. Heck, the plot progression of any of them is readily interchangeable with any other, just the names change. Wasn’t a great leap for Chester Morris, who had portrayed Blackie on radio, to make the films.
The Falcon was a barely disguised extension of The Saint. There is a resemblance, but the voice of George Sanders’ brother, Tom Conway, who took over the Falcon role, is nearly identical.

@NotMax: when I press “play” nothing happens. And, yes, I have the sound on my tablet (Android) turned up. I am hoping it can be made to work. I love noir.
NotMax
@karen marie
Sorry to hear that. Not my site; it may be a mobile conflict thing. Dunno.

@karen marie
Just checked on the ol’ PC, and they may be off the air for the night. The whole site has changed so dramatically, I don’t know if they now have regular or limited broadcast hours or not.
Don’t give up. :) Try again tomorrow or later on.

Many horrible things happen every day on this planet, but few are as heartbreaking as this:
Not only was she beautiful, but she seemed well-liked (based on all the flowers and stuff at the memorial). I hope they can charge the father with something, SOMETHING. The fucker needs to be in prison to cool his heels for a decade or two.

Good job, GOP. You managed to disenfranchise a few thousand voters through your voter ID efforts, and in retaliation, thanks to Dems in Oregon paving a path, California is rushing ahead to automatically add 6 million registered voters in the bluest state in the nation. Go suck on it.
And yes, the wingnut freakout is already happening.
Granted, licenses to undocumented immigrants are very clearly labeled, and because the registration is automatic and doesn’t rely on some clerk data-entering on paper, the likelihood that an undocumented licensee would get registered is vastly less, but you know, brown people:
Apparently officials in Ohio and Kansas cannot read the notice on the front of the license.
mclaren
@? Martin:
Alas, adding to the number of registered voters in California does nothing to change the electoral balance of power, since CA is already a deep blue state. Adding registered voters to deep red states like Tennessee or Mississippi or Alabama would make a difference.
But, of course, those kinds of deep red states are exactly where the GOP’s disenfranchisement efforts are concentrated.

After this noir stimulation I thought I’d look for Advise and Consent on Youtube. Someone is offering the movie but you have to verify your age because of the ‘content.’ Is that some kind of trick? Obv age isn’t an issue for this movie, so.
Anyway here’s the trailerfor it, which is good in itself. (For some subliminal reason I alway found Betty White to be suggestive of noir undertones, but I don’t know if she was in any ‘true’ noirs.)
Now I’m thirsty for available noir before dawn breaks. Any recommendations for a real good one on Yt, Netfl or Hulu? (Got no cable.)
Aleta

So many to choose from.
Cry Danger is on YouTube. At least for now.
Aleta
@NotMax: thanks. I like Jay Adler, so going for it.
Also found Pitfall on Hulu ?

@Aleta
Never been to Hulu, so don’t know.
But if they have Murder, My Sweet, go for it.

It’s raining like a muthaphuckah here in NE KS. Biblical monsoon, if ya Noah I mean.
Peeps be claiming smartphones or group sex to be the best thing in the world. Nope. It’s sump pumps. Friggin lifesaver.

@Omnes Omnibus: Funny. That’s only half my look. ;)
@Steeplejack: oh I am in hibernation for when it’s needed. WC for women and Copa America may be just my time to wake up again. ETA: have a lovely trip and sorry about your haircut.
Aleta
@NotMax: Pitfall, also Dick Powell, free, b/w quality is great. (Haven’t watched.)

Dunno about sticky toffee, but if you need help pulling sticky taffy, it looks like that fellow in the photo is ready and willing to give it!
Probably for a price, though.

From the eyes up, that god has a Homer Simpson look going on.
@Steeplejack: Enjoy the mini-road trip. Safe travels and all.

“God of Death” brand sticky toffee pudding! It’s a floor cleaner *and* a dessert topping!

I have a sticky toffee pudding recipe, which I serve with English custard. It’s slightly adapted from David Lebovitz’s recipe. It’s delicious. I can email it to you.
Pee Cee
I get a bit of a “Darth Vader” vibe from it.
SFAW
Does it speak ONLY IN UPPER CASE? If not, then it’s not really Death. Plus, not skinny enough.

@Pee Cee:
Sorry, but @Bokonon: beat you to it.

@karen marie:
There are several different places where the sound can be turned way down or off. Go to “Settings” and look to see if sound is adjusted there. Sometimes when you try to do power-saving it will turn off the sound system, which you can see and fix at the “Settings” pages.
Or was that Android 4? We are 5.something now, though… whatever. Look at settings next.

This Udny Arms scottish pub recipe is my favorite. I don’t make it, but the pub down the road uses this recipe, and I love theirs:

BTW, sticky toffee pudding has dates in it, so I’m gonna guess it’s the same or roughly the same as aforementioned sticky date pudding. https://balloon-juice.com/2015/06/05/late-nightmare-open-thread/#comment-5361019
