Botsplainer
My father-in-law is there with his lady friend. Her granddaughter is one of the big name players on Team USA.
Baud
Trying to find a free online stream.
Tommy
Cool. As a dude without cable TV I am SO HAPPY the USA game is on network TV. Go USA!!!!!
With that said I am nothing close to a huge soccer fan. But I find the ladies game, the same why I find international women’s hockey, to be more technical than the men so I enjoy watching it a lot more.
Tommy
@Baud: It is on your local FOX station, not cable.
Baud
@Tommy:
I know, but I’m trying to watch two shows at once so I’m trying to find an online site for the soccer match.
redshirt
lol usa
Tommy
@Baud: Got it. Go to Deadspin and do a search for “watching World Cup.” They have a very intensive guide on every place you can go/watch.
Botsplainer
Also, I gotta say – I’ve been in Winnipeg. It’s a shithole. It isn’t anywhere as nice as it looks on TV.
raven
@Botsplainer: I’ve been fishing on Red Deer Lake outside of Kenora. Nice country.
Mike J
@Botsplainer:
heds
CBC: Winnipeg disappoints FIFA fans in world spotlight
Winnipeg Sun: American soccer-watchers wowed by city’s welcome
Aleta
@Baud: @Tommy: Me too !! Just found it on local station after a week of lucklessness trying to stream. @Baud: You can get a free 24 hour pass on fubo-tv pro. Not sure of quality, so I didn’t ry it yet.
Tommy
My gosh these ladies are flat-out amazing. I’ve played more than a little soccer in my life. And ball control, even until high school we played a lot of four square, I got ball control down.
Heck I was at my 6-year-old niece’s soccer game a few months ago and my parents and her parents were stunned at what I could do with a ball when I was playing around with them. I was like muscle memory folks.
But what they can/are doing with that little round ball is amazing!
raven
@Mike J: And a typo in the CBC article!
Botsplainer
Country’s nice – town is ugly. Winnipeg was our flight embarkation point to fly to Churchill for polar bears, which was a long trip but WAY cool. Northern lights, bears, foxes, snowy owls, caribou, Inuit…
You’re adventurous, and should totally do it.
raven
Some people enjoy all the bullshit that surrounds games. It’s like those stupid “Fan Zone’s” for bowl games. I guess if you have kids and need to kill time they are ok but they are mostly stupid.
Botsplainer
Morgan Brian is my father-in-law’s lady friend’s granddaughter.
raven
@Botsplainer: cool
Tommy
Wow the refs are really letting them play. Seems there have been multiple fouls, on both sides, none called. Not sure who that favors.
raven
@Tommy: ref
ThresherK
@Botsplainer: Neato.
Steeplejack
@Baud:
This was recommended by Morzer last night.
Baud
@Steeplejack:
Thanks, but I decided to watch the soccer match and record the other show.
Tommy
Well that was a flat out terrible penalty kick.
Steeplejack
@Baud:
Well, make a mental note of this on paper, because the situation is likely to come up again.
raven
@Steeplejack: Or bookmark the link.
Steeplejack
@raven:
J.O.K.E.
raven
@Steeplejack: D.O.P.E (me)
Baud
@Steeplejack:
Why remember when I can just ask the group?
raven
@Baud: You have to remember to ask the group.
Baud
@raven:
Therein’s the rub.
Steeplejack
@Baud:
Well, because when ThresherK asked this exact same question last night, it took some lengthy backing and forthing over two threads to eventually get the answer. What are you gonna do if Raven, Morzer or I aren’t present in the “group” when you ask?
/scold off
SRW1
Stats say Sweden had more possession. Would not have been my guess.
Tommy
There is the stereotype that Swedes are blond. Not sure if that is true but my gosh there are a lot of blonds on the Swedish team. Via my very non-official count, and they did show the bench a few times, there are only four non-blondes on the entire team. That is a lot of blond going on :).
raven
@Tommy: It’s not a stereotype, it’s a fact jack!
Baud
@Steeplejack:
Yes sir.
raven
And this tidbit
raven
Aite let’s pass the rock.
MattR
@Botsplainer: Hey. Fuck you. I just booked a vacation to Winnipeg :) Granted, half the family members there will agree it is a shithole. Polar bear watching in Churchill is defintiely on my bucket list. Gonna do that at some point in the next few years while my mom is still capable of handling it – and visiting relatives in Winnipeg will get us halfway to Churchill.
EDIT – A cousin was complaining about all the American tourists in town. I don’t think he minds the Swedes near as much ;)
@Tommy:
Those 4 non blondes are actually from California (Sorry. Terrible joke)
Steeplejack
@raven:
Auprès de ma blonde: also the title of a good crime novel by Nicolas Freeling. And there’s a classic zydeco song called “Jolie Blonde.”
/random mental connections
raven
@Steeplejack: Awright!
Randinho
@raven: During last year’s WC the only venue city I spent any time was Belo Horizonte. IIRC Iran was playing Argentina and I tried to go to the Fan Zone, which was at a place called Recanto do Galo, the training ground of the detestable Atlético Mineiro (my team is their rival and current defending champion, Cruzeiro). One could not get in for all the Argentineans there.
raven
@Randinho: The swines!
Randinho
God I hate the wave.
raven
@Randinho: I worked on a Spanish course with a team of instructors. We had one Argentinian and they rest of the team would tell me “they are soon arrogant, but they speak soon pretty”!
raven
@Randinho: I was just saying that!
Botsplainer
@MattR:
We stayed at that glorious old railroad hotel, saw a bagpipe band for some random family reunion while there and drank a shitload of Bloody Caesars.
Tommy
@MattR: If it makes you feel better I got the joke and the band without clicking through.
SRW1
Ah, that must hurt.
Southern Beale
I don’t get soccer.
raven
@Southern Beale: Put the ball in the goal.
Aleta
@Botsplainer: Do you recommend the company who took you further up north?
Arclite
The US really seems to be dominating them, but can’t put the ball in the net.
Randinho
@raven: The common view of Argentines: Argentines think they are a nation of Italians who speak Spanish and think they’re British living in Paris.
Tommy
@Southern Beale: I am watching because, well go USA and nothing else interesting on to watch. Soccer is a sport I really liked to play, watching it not so much.
Same as golf and tennis, both sports I got Division I scholarships for. Other than the British Open, because Links courses rock, you couldn’t pay me to watch golf or tennis.
raven
@Aleta: Fly trans love airways, getcha there on time.
raven
@Tommy: I got my annual “you didn’t get tickets” from the Masters today.
raven
Great play!
Baud
Close.
MattR
Now that is literally “clearing it off the line”
Botsplainer
@Aleta:
Natural Habitat. Great vendor, lots of worldwide nature adventure, including the Galapagos. Got everything from bears to mountains to scuba diving (which is my passion).
They’re super green, as well.
Tommy
@raven: LOL. I like the links courses that abuse golfers. Where a few under par leads. The Masters course is stunning in how pretty it is. I’d like to play it don’t get me wrong. But when you can shot 15+ under par that isn’t a course I think is “cool.”
Randinho
@raven: Captain High at your service.
Aleta
@Steeplejack: Although, the original wiziwig site got shut down after they couldn’t fight legal challenges. This newer site seems to be anonymous. I’m uncertain about using it….but if anyone finds it to be legit, kindly let me know.
Randinho
A tie certainly helps USA much more than Sweden.
Tommy
That was a textbook tackle.
SRW1
Time for Sweden to bring Zlatan.
Tommy
Stupid question. Clearly the US team is wearing Nike jerseys. But they all seem to be wearing different cleats. No contract there for the players?
Aleta
Analyzing Abby’s acting skills and finding her weak. Go US -Fox announcers.
Randinho
@Tommy: Indeed. In the replay, you could see her following the ball with her eyes and not the player. When the ball got a little too far in front of the player she made her move. Johnston is brilliant.
gail sadock
@Tommy: Score? Please.
Baud
Tie!
Randinho
@Aleta: Word. She went down far too easily.
SRW1
Today’s results will make for an interesting last round in Group D. Sweden could go home after the group stage.
Arclite
Tie. USA sits atop the group.
raven
Oh good, let’s play at the same time as the NBA finals!
Hill Dweller
If Krieger could have made just a couple of decent thru balls, the US would have had scoring opportunities up the right side. You’d think she had never attempted it before.
Aleta
@Steeplejack: Because also, their text has a Chinese-auto-translator lilt to it. Maybe I’m too suspicious about the irrelevant, though.
Tommy
@Randinho: Go after the ball, not the player. Maybe I am “old school” but I played a lot of sports. If playing soccer I went after a person’s legs and not the ball my mom or dad would have walked onto the field, grabbed me by the collar (or ear) and walked me off the field.
raven
@Tommy: And if you played in any of the leagues I ran they’d be banned for doing that.
Steeplejack
@Aleta:
My link at #21 is to the “.to” site. I don’t know how well it works; I have been able to find all the games on my cable system.
Randinho
@Tommy: Always, but in the replay, she wasn’t even looking at the Swedish attacker. She was poised for the moment she could tackle completely clean. Smart player.
Tommy
@raven: That is wonderful to hear. I am about the most competitive person you will find. But I get joy in playing by the rules and not being a dick. And winning that way.
Tommy
@Randinho: No that was as clean of a play as you could have. Why I said it was textbook. She was focused on the ball. Went after the ball. That is kind of soccer. How the game is played.
Valdivia
@Randinho: You beat me to it with the Argentinian jokes. :)
Tommy
Totally OT but I am watching Real Time. His has Ed Begley Jr. on. He takes about using a rain barrel. Well he gets all his water this way. I got a rain barrel two years ago and I am stunned how much water it collects.
Water via the downspouts in my house would blow your mind. When I water my garden or yard I just can do to water in a drum . I have told the people that live to the left and right of me I got water for free, use it if you want.
So much water ………
gail sadock
Score, please?m
Valdivia
@gail sadock: it was a tie.
Randinho
@Tommy: couldn’t agree more. Impressive, intelligent play. Cool and assured; exactly what you want in a center back.
@Tommy: When we get torrential rain here my drainspouts off the gutter on our rear veranda look like a small river. When we get our backyard we’re definitely going to have a tank to get rain.
Tommy
@Randinho: @Randinho: I am so stunned by how much rain I get. Buckets loads. People around me have gardens. You can come take as much water as you want. They don’t seem to get my point.
