The Washington Post reports:
Rick Perry, whose presidential campaign is struggling to raise money and is no longer paying its staff, lost his Iowa campaign chairman on Monday.
Sam Clovis, one of Iowa’s most prominent conservatives who had been leading Perry’s campaign in the state, confirmed in an interview that he had left the Perry campaign in part because he was no longer being compensated. He said he is in conversations to sign up with another Republican candidate.
“I feel bad for the campaign and I feel bad for Governor Perry because I think he’s a marvelous human being, he’s a great man and it was my honor to be a part of this, but it was just time to move on,” said Clovis, who is a talk radio personality, professor and former U.S. Senate candidate…
Clovis said he has entertained entreaties from “several” rival campaigns in the two and a half weeks since Perry stopped paying his staff. He said he expects to sign on with a new candidate in the next few days. “I’m going to go where there’s the best fit,” he said.
When Clovis signed on with Perry, he said the “finalists” he considered were Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, former technology executive Carly Fiorina and businessman Donald Trump. Cruz would be a natural candidate for Clovis to settle on, as would Trump, who has rocketed to the top of polls and is building a costly and aggressive ground campaign in Iowa…
I guess the thumbsucker takeaway is: Does Clovis jump for the easy Trump dollar, or bet on Teddy the Cross for the long-term grift?
(Not that I think Cruz is liable to win the GOP nomination, but his candidacy for God-King in the Republic of Gilead is a safe money bet at least through next year.)

¡Jeb! isn’t good at this.

It’s pretty common for the people who print the signs and provide sandwiches at the meetings to get stiffed. Senior campaign staff get paid or they’re gone.

I don’t see where the link tells what this Clovis does, read that Trump already has as many ground operatives hired for Iowa as Jeb!? does. So if he moves to the Trump campaign, I’d suspect that he already has a preliminary offer and is not going to cold call. Is that too cynical?

The Washington Post story adds to the sense that Trump really is in it to win it. Whereas Perry, still carrying the stigma of idiocy from 2012, was always among the no-hopers in this cycle. Mind you, I’m far from impressed with the other candidates Sam Clovis was thinking of working for.

Yes, because insulting Asian-Americans, who were already trending towards Democrats based on previous Republican idiocy, was clearly the smart move here.

I think the last holdout Asian-American group that was still voting majority Republican is Vietnamese-Americans, at least here in Southern California. I’m guessing that will change PDQ if Jeb! gets the nod.

‘ well, you better do it before I become President, because I’m going to shut that down. ‘
THAT is moderate?

@rikyrah: Even though it is early in the campaign, and I think most of the officially media sanctioned dire make-or-break primary crises will be forgotten a year from now, I think some GOP candidates have done themselves serious long term damage already, and one of them is Jeb!?. Or should we call him just ‘Jeb?’ by now?
From my conversations with friends and students, people in the Asian-American community are just as attuned to immigration issues as Hispanics are, even if you don’t hear as much about it. As soon as people hear what he has been saying, Jeb!? will be written down on ‘Dead to me politically’ lists and he won’t come off, for a lot of people.

I was thinking about this earlier, because I truly am a political junkie/geek: On paper, or in a world where people noticed the Iraq War, Rick Perry should be a much stronger candidate than Jeb!, but he clearly is not.
Considering his wheels are spinning again, considering–even without Trump– he’s losing not just to Bush, but Li’l Marco and Ted Cruz and Walker and in some polls Kasich. My first thought was why not sit this one out and try again, but he is older than I thought (65). All the more reason, in that case, to go off and graze in the tall grass, were I the former governor of Texas and Friend to Plutocrats.

@BillinGlendaleCA: My understanding is that there was an Obama administration policy on use of government email system. In retrospect, the administration says that exceptions were allowed if that policy could not be followed. So, seems to be conflation between an administrative policy and some regulatory law. my two cents on Jeb! flubbing his insult of “anchor babies” to include Asian-Americans. Way to insult TWO general ethnic voting blocs with the same insult, Bushie Numero Tres! http://noticeatrend.blogspot.com/2015/08/in-jeb-said-what-category-today-and-its.html
At this point I’m waiting for Jeb! to say something insulting about Greek-Americans so that I can enjoy the sight of Jeb! getting burned in effigy up and down the streets of Tarpon Springs.
As for Rick Perry, I’m surprised a Rich Republican Texan hasn’t volunteered to be the home-state sugar daddy for Perry’s SuperPAC hopes and dreams. Has all the SuperPAC money gone to Jeb! or Walker or Cruz or what?

If anybody in Florida knows the procedure to send a friendly brief to a court judge, I would like to send a letter to the one overseeing the gerrymander case – Judge Terry Lewis, 2nd Circuit in Leon County – to suggest he use the map created by the Addicting Info website as the best non-gerrymander Congressional map.
I’d also suggest to the judge that he hold the state House Speaker in contempt for 90 days or more. The Florida House has been so ineptly and grossly managed this year it’s been an embarrassment to the state. And this is with Rick “No Ethics” Scott as our f-cking governor.
Current news about the case is that there’s a meeting scheduled Tuesday afternoon: http://miamiherald.typepad.com/nakedpolitics/redistricting/

@rikyrah:
Jeb’s reputation as “The Smart One” comes from the fact that he succeeded in his business opportunities where Dubya failed. Even though both of them got where they were in business and politics due entirely to their family connections with Poppy as their daddy.
It turns out Jeb had better partners: looking at his business career he was never a solo act. And being in commercial real estate in Florida during the 1980s was akin to being in the midwest steel industry in the 1880s: you couldn’t fail even if you tried.
PaulW
@jl:
thing is, the SuperPAC in theory (and practice) can cover so many external expenses – especially ads – that would have killed previous election cycle campaigns, the regular campaign could run even at a bare minimum of fundraising and get away with it.
For Perry to mismanage this badly is telling in three ways: 1) SuperPAC money is not as effective as feared, 2) there are too many candidates pulling away too few fund providers, 3) he’s really really bad at campaigning on a national level.
How many other Republican primary candidates are having this problem? I heard Christie is looking to drop out soon… any others?
