I warned commentor and kitten-fosterer Marc that yesterday’s escapee looked like they might have some Siamese genes, and Siamese-type cats are noted for being “insanely acrobatic”. So today I got another email:
Does this count?
Insanely Acrobatic…the early days.
White-ish kittens have a bit of those markings. I’m thinking they may be female, and the three orange ones are male, but I’ll let the vet have the final say.
Apart from our moment of kitten respite, what’s on the agenda as we wrap up another week?

I just saw this BBC story from last week: an American company is selling flamethrowers, a weapon banned under the Geneva Convention, as a toy for adults. Another company sells them as agricultural tools, for burning unwanted crops.
SMH.

I was pointed by my news feed to a column in The Independant that is arguing for something that I have seen feeling for quite some time: Why it’s time to take the T out of LGBT
Actually, I would like to see the B go as well.

@Mustang Bobby: Heh. I bought a squirrel proof feeder last winter. It worked. Very well. They eventually gave up on trying to feed from it and satisfied themselves with what the birds left on the ground. But then somewhere along the lines this spring, one of them got pissed. I mean really pissed. Sat on the damn thing gnawing and pulling and clawing at each of the 4 openings for probably hours, until finally it was jammed shut.
“Fvck you. If I can’t eat from it, then nobody’s eatin’ from it.”
Mustang Bobby
@OzarkHillbilly: At one point Dad said the hell with it and set up a squirrel feeder: a little shelf with a corncob stuck on a spike. Guess what: the birds got to it first.
raven
@Keith G: From what I saw on Colbert his heart isn’t in it and I don’t blame him. Fuck the American people, they don’t deserve him.
Another Holocene Human
@Keith G: Total rot. Transgender people got a whole passel of rights on the skirts of gay people’s struggles for civil rights and so did bisexual people. And bisexual and trans people were on the front lines fighting for those rights. Trans people are still fighting for their rights right now and major LGBT organizations are fighting for them. The lobbying infrastructure, the fundraising, etc, is still there.
Just because Caitlyn Jenner is full of shit doesn’t mean that all sexual and gender minorities don’t face overlapping issues, often the very same issues.
Also, complete bullshit to claim that biologically, LGB and T are totally different. More research is needed but there’s plenty of evidence of some spectrum stuff going on in fetal development. We define these things differently in our society but some societies didn’t–and don’t. Food for thought.

My niece lives in Japan. Moved there about 4 1/2 yrs ago. To Sendai. Just before the earthquake and tsunami. Survived all that but spent about a month as a refuge, first from the EQ and tsunami, then from the Fukushima meltdown.

Fears that rising water levels could threaten the city of Sendai prompted authorities there to advise – though not order – more than 400,000 residents to leave.

Woke up after midnight, MSNBC on the telly, and they were running their September 11 programming.
Except they’d changed it.
It’s genuinely moving to watch the broadcast as it happened — just the recorded program — as the scope becomes clear, and Katie Couric did an incredible job that morning. [Tom Brokaw was declaring it “terrorism” in his anchorman voice relatively early in the day, and ready to unleash our dogs of war. That’s alarming, in retrospect. Brokaw helped shape the response.]
Watching it as people were still grappling with what has occurred — the story’s not in yet, and what is known seems so unbelievable — brings back the loss.
But MSNBC had edited the stuff, and now it was Matt Lauer and David Gregory (gag, both) recalling how the day felt to THEM.
It’s all about THEM. It’s about the corporate identity and assets (one since discarded). Not a tragedy; it’s another network promo.
Turned it off. Fuck MSNBC.
Another Holocene Human
@Keith G: I think that’s already happening in terms of education, if you look at what’s going on in the youth space with youth activism.
But when that bathroom bill came through in Florida, EQFL, the organization that fought for gays and lesbians to be able to adopt and SSM in Florida, was right there. They’ve recently hired a transwoman on staff and she was good. (Believe it or not, one of EQFL’s best lobbyists is straight and cisgendered.)
As more and more trans people find their voices, there is going to be disruption within the activist community. You do run into quite a few transwomen who are all “I’m a conservative” yadda yadda, because apparently reality hasn’t caught up to them yet. There’s a split between those who transition early in life and those who transition late, a split between trans people of color and white trans people, a split between those who identified with the gay community and those who never had anything to do with the gay community. In one week I had dinner with a trans woman who, while by no means a right wing jerk, was bewildered by the gay community and the state of trans activism, and with a trans woman who identifies closely with the GLBT community (and has pretty much lived all four letters). If you passed as a straight white guy in America for 30 years or 40 years or 50 years you are still inhabiting this entire memeplex that doesn’t go away just because you transitioned.

@Keith G: I’m not persuaded. I thought the whole point of the LGBT movement was to get society (or it’s reactionary members) to stop discriminating against people in those groups – not that they were all the same or had the same views on issues. That they don’t fit in the “traditional” boxes doesn’t mean that they’re somehow defective and deserving of being treated differently than “normal” people.
Separating out Ts from LGBT seems to me to be a mistake.

Back again, out on the deck. It’s sweater cool in NoVA today; yesterday’s rains took away the recent mornings’ mugginess.
Highly recommend seeing Rosenwald, Aviva Kempner’s superb documentary in theatres in limited release this week and next.
Film not limited solely to millionaire Julius Rosenwald’s financing schools for African Americans throughout the South (over 5,000 built by the mid 1930s) — there was a Rosenwald Fund that nurtured up and coming artistic talent too. Marion Anderson studied for two years in Germany, then returned and was denied the DAR Hall for a concert. Langston Hughes and Ralph Ellison and Gordon Parks received Rosenwald funding, as did many whose works you will see in the film clips and stills.
Great overview of American history and culture, even Sears & Roebucks history (Rosenwald owned and managed S&R). Depicts period when some people cared more and wanted to do more for people who were not themselves. It’s an indictment on how far we have fallen — hoping Justice John Roberts and Anthony Kennedy see it and feel shame for their work in dismantling the Voting Rights Act’s protections.
Entertaining, intelligent film. Julian Bond interviewed; a fellow moviegoer told me they’d planned to use him more in film promo before his too early demise.
Think I might see it again! Ms. Kempner appears at the Avalon in DC on September 15; would love to see a Q&A. Maybe we can round up some fellow Juicers.
She opens the movie in Baltimore at the Charles Theatre tonight.

I am wondering about this latest, last-ditch attempt by the Republican party to stop the Iran nuke deal. Those side deals between Iran and the IAEA must be about the logistics of inspections and things like that which are pursuant to enforcing the main deal. The IAEA is not an agency of the US Government, so as far as I can see the latter is not directly a party to these deals.
Is Congress now claiming the authority to review arrangements between a foreign power and an international agency, on the grounds that they relate to a deal the US is party to?

And so it begins . . .
Cervantes
@Amir Khalid:
The documents the Republicans are demanding from Obama are confidential agreements negotiated bilaterally between the IAEA and Iran. They address the agency’s previous investigations of Iran. They have nothing to do with “enforcing the main deal” that was just negotiated.
Among the House Republicans are a few bright sparks who genuinely think they must pursue these IAEA documents; and then there’s a bigger group making these noises in bad faith. There are also Republicans in the House who know the noises need to stop (1) insofar as they are made in bad faith and (2) because they are legally ridiculous.

Sanders supporters are not anti-Clinton (crazy low estimate of 2% are ABCs).

@Full metal Wingnut: Most of us are doing as our candidate is doing, and not flinging poo at Clinton in threads and editorials and such. It’s counterproductive and she’s one of the better choices if the only choices are the Republicans, Trump, and her.
I don’t think the Clintonistas are quite so restrained. Pretty much the same as with the stadium-filling, Bernie has the numbers but it’s still a bit early to do anything other than mudslinging. Since it’s all mudslinging at the moment you won’t see as many Bernie voters.

@Thoughtful Today: That’s what I thought, but the harm is only temporary if Biden doesn’t run.
Unless of course other Dems on the sideline see Biden’s decent polling as an indication that Clinton is vulnerable and jump in. But who could jump in 4.5 months before Iowa and seriously challenge Clinton for the nomination? Who has the suction to pull that off? In terms of the mainstream I don’t see Cuomo crossing the Clintons. Gillibrand would be a good choice-smart, young, attractive (sadly that’s important), female-but I don’t think 2016 is her time.
Sanders pretty much owns the left flank, the only Dem who could seriously challenge him for that is Warren if she jumps in.
