… when Jake Tapper used the phrase “Republicans in Disarray” during the evening newscast. He was talking specifically about Paul Ryan’s pas de derp with the House Freedumb Caucus, and you could tell it was a struggle to force such heresy through his clenched lips.
I'm not clear on how this whole, "Paul Ryan has many demands that must be met by people who hate him" thing works.

Apart from schadenfreude, what’s on the agenda for the evening?

One has to imagine Ryan laid out this list of conditions as a way to get out of actually becoming Speaker. Given the insane amount of pressure he’s been under from his fellow Republicans and how they’ve basically crawled begging to him on their knees, he has no choice but to at least consider it. But he also really, really doesn’t want the job, in no small part because he wants to ensure he still has a future. So he lays out these conditions, knowing the Tortilla Coast Gang will never approve them and when they shoot him down, he can go, “Well, I tried, but these guys are lunatics. Blame them, not me.” And then he goes merrily zipping off Roadrunner style into the sunset to the safety of Ways and Means while the GOP House caucus goes full blown Lord of the Flies.
The next few days will be interesting. But the early reaction from the Cuckoo Caucus isn’t good.
Turgidson
“conservative ideas that would give any direct help to families trying to make ends meet”
Of fucking course they haven’t offered any such ideas. By definition, ideas that offer direct help to non-rich people are not conservative ideas. They’re…liberal ideas.

sempronia
The who-should-be-VP thread downstairs is pretty dead, so I’ll just ask here – why isn’t anyone mentioning Russ Feingold? Wiki says he’s not that old (62), and he’s just chilling in Africa somewhere as an ambassador, unlike Brown, Warren, or Kaine, e.g., who are holding down the Senate. Would we rather have Feingold back in the Senate? Looks like he’s running again in 2016, against Johnson, the RW crazy who unseated him last time. He would make our left wing happy, he isn’t that old, and he’s got undeniable experience. Don’t know his record that well, but I’d want a VP who would moderate Hils’s hawkish tendencies. Julian Castro just seems too inexperienced to be second in line to the presidency, and I don’t think he would stand up to Clinton if he disagreed with her.
JMG
Tapper doesn’t get it. The point of the Republican party is to make those who aren’t Republican suffer as much as possible. It’s the party of sadism.

Both republicans and dems are in disarray. The only way this world ever improves is if there is a concerted effort to encourage heterosexual, monogamous, religious based long standing marriage where there is a strong mother and father. A mom who pays attention to her kids activities. One who encourages athletic and academic success and isn’t afraid to say no. Says no to bad influences such as the media and Hollywood and video games and the internet. A mom who let’s her kids know through actions and deeds that she cares more for them than herself. And a dad. A dad isn’t afraid to work. A dad who isn’t afraid to take risk. A dad who is consistent and caring. Until this happens, it will all spiral downward.

Probably no one reads them, Real pros like Fox News stick to screaming that Sanders will hike taxes to 100 percent and take all the white people’s money and give to Those People and snotty lazy college kids. And pay Russia, China and ISIS to take all our military equipment.

@Roger Moore: I don’t understand why Ryan’s conditions are anything for the Freedom nutcaucus to worry about. If they cannot get what they want, all they want to do is obstruct, and that is very compatible with taking a good long time getting some chump to be the Speaker. Johnny Bones said if necessary he would hang around until he pushed through a debt ceiling increase, and not much they can do about it. So, good time for a tantrum, and why should Ryan’s demands get in the way of that?

@David Koch: Biden is a natural politician, and probably very hard for him to say goodbye to all that politicking for good. Surely it tore him apart.
But now that Freedom caucus is signalling they are not all that impressed with that Ryan and his impudent demands (and Ryan’s demands are pretty impudent, except in the face of the Freedom caucus) and who gives a rats ass about having a Speaker anyway, Biden saw Ryan drifting aimlessly into oblivion, and Biden saw that his work was done and that it was good. On another note, I think it’s high time baseball put into place a new rule that states that both New York teams begin the year with 40 losses each. The 40 wins can get spread around the rest of the league. Either that, or just pack up the God damned teams and put them in Buffalo and Louisville or Providence or somewhere. My understanding is that the Freedumb Caucus is essentially up to their old tricks, but within the Republican party rather than the House as a whole. They’re trying to use their ability to block election of a new Speaker to extract concessions that will make it easier for them to push forward their active policies. And don’t let the talk about them being nothing but a bunch of obstructionists fool you; they’re limited to that now because that’s all they have the power to do. If they can actually get some real control, they’ll move on to a policy of actually tearing stuff down and blowing it up, rather than just preventing maintenance and waiting for it to collapse from disrepair.

@gf120581: After the assassination of Franz Ferdinand in June 1914, the Austro-Hungarian government badly wanted a war with Serbia, but first it presented that country with a diplomatic ultimatum filled with absurd demands they knew would be rejected.
The Freedumb Caucus will come up with something similar to cram down Paul Ryan’s throat.
jl
@Roger Moore: I agree that they would be very dangerous if they got control. But what does the House need to do for now after debt ceiling is reached. Apparently they can’t oust Boehner and he said if necessary he will stick around to push it through. So, if that is the case, it seems like stalemate to me. The FC won’t let a halfway sane person become Speaker and the the halfway sane reactionaries and RINOs have no reason to give in to their demands.
So, I see continuing stalemate as a possibility, unless Boehner wimps out and sneaks out of town late at night before the debt ceiling is taken care of.

Re the Cubs, here is an interesting statistic: in every playoff series the Cubs have lost, they have done so by dropping the three or more games in a row. In 1984 they won the first two against the Padres and then lost the next three. In 1989, the lost the first game to the Giants, came back and tied it, and then lost the next three. In 1998, 2007 and 2008 they were swept three games to none by the Braves, Diamondbacks and Dodgers, respectively. And in 2003 they took a three to one series lead against the Marlins and then lost the next three games and the series. And right now they’re on the verge of being swept by the Mets. No matter how good the team may have been through the regular season and the playoffs, at a certain point the pressure always gets to them and they completely fall apart. There has to be some practical way to stop them from doing that, but what it might be, I can’t imagine…

@gogol’s wife: Mel Brooks was everywhere a couple years back, I forget what boxset or book was released, and he talked disappointingly little about Zero. I’ve always wondered, if the role wasn’t written for him (which it seems to be, but you’d think somebody would say) if Mostel’s physicality and vocal inflections and and eyebrows and everything else reshaped the character as they filmed.
I like Nathan Lane in just about anything, but those shoes were just a bit too big.

So, Rachel reports the Freedom Caucus is “supporting” but not “endorsing” Paul Ryan.
Because it takes 80% yes votes for caucus to come out for anything. (It’s in their by-laws.) Sounds like Freedom Caucus not taking the bait of staging antics that would allow Paul Ryan to say, see, they’re impossible, they didn’t give me what I wanted, I’m not taking the job.
So, not clear what will happen.

@Mandalay: but you are using logic about rational actions by normal people. I don’t have any idea what that has to do with the GOP House caucus. I predict ass backwards march into Boehner II.
randy khan
@Patrick: The Mets were something like 11-1 against the Dodgers in 1988. Regular season records mean less than it might appear. (Also, all the games were pre-Cespedes, pre-mats, maybe pre-Syndegaard and while Wright was on the DL.)
MazeDancer
@jl:
Possibly so.
Apparently, it was a 2/3 yes on Ryan at the Freedom Caucus, but not the 80% they require for an endorsement.
Ryan issued a statement of thanks. And says it was positive for GOP unity. He’s looking for reports from 2 other cauci.
So, if the other 2 go yes, as assumed they will, looks like he will enter his name. And that means he will get elected. But no Hastert moment. Also not clear what happens with Ryan’s “request” for rule change to no e-z dumping the Speaker.
If there is no Hastert Rule, the Freedom Caucus has no hostage clout. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Paul Ryan dumps the Hastert Rule to save his weekends?

True. I think the Cubs were 3-4 against the Dodgers and 7-0 against the Mets. Based on that, the Chicago papers were hoping for the Mets. But like you said, post season and regular season are two different animals.
Randy P
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: Actually, Phil Silvers was supposed to do the lead in “Forum”, but was dropped from consideration because he insisted on wearing his glasses onstage and the producers or writers or somebody thought that would be too inauthentic. I believe he got to do the role on Broadway later in some revival. With glasses.
Another “Forum” story I’ve heard is that it was a complete flop in tryouts, because audiences were confused about whether they were supposed to be laughing or not (apparently the togas made them think they were supposed to be serious). Jerome Robbins was brought in to doctor it up, and he had Sondheim put in the “Comedy Tonight” number and made it very slapsticky to hit the audience over the head with the message: “Yes, it’s comedy”.
I’ve also heard that Mostel greeted Robbins when he showed up with “Hiya, Loose Lips”. Robbins had testified to the House UnAmerican Activities Committee. Mostel was blacklisted by them.
Randy P
@jl: It would be nice if they just blew themselves up, but didn’t blow up the country while having their drama.
Is that too much to ask?

You probably know Ornette Coleman died day before yesterday. Invented a whole new kind of music. Quartet of sax, trumpet, bass and drums. People got into fist fights over whether it was a great new invention or not any of those things.
One member said someone set another guy’s car on fire outside the club. A famous musician punched another musician in his face in the kitchen of the club during a break between sets.
Not my most favorite style of music ever, but pretty much totally worth while inventing. RIP, Ornette, and keep on blowing your horn!

@efgoldman: He did do a revival, in the 1971-72 Broadway season, and in fact won a Tony for it (as did Mostel, and Nathan Lane later in the 90s — it’s, along with Mama Rose in Gypsy, the most Tony-winning role).
PurpleGirl
@Jim, Foolish Literalist: I saw Nathan Lane in a Broadway stage revival of “A Funny Thing.” He came close to Zero’s genius, not completely but so close. But god, yes, the movie version is so good — and not Zero, but Phil Silvers, and Buster Keaton, the whole cast was so good.
PurpleGirl
@Tom Q: Mama Rose was supposed to be the focus of Gypsy — the ultimate stage mother role. With Ethel Merman in the lead role on the stage, Mama Rose was the dominant role. In the movie, Gypsy became the focus when Natalie Wood was cast as Gypsy Rose Lee opposite Ros Russell as Mama Rose. I didn’t see Gypsy on Broadway but growing up I was a follower of Gypsy when she was on the Tonight Show.

So I leave for a few hours, to watch the Mets stomp the Cubs, and I find that Right to Racism is now back as Racism Above, and still making shit up regarding polls.
The Bloomberg poll that has Jeb! at 10 percent (as of a day or so ago) had him at 13 percent a month ago. A few more “surges” like that, and Jeb! will be in negative numbers.
But, at least we’ll always have a racist, Jeb-supporting troll to tell us that Up is Down, War is Peace, and We Have Always Been at War with Eastasia. The only question is what nym/nom/numb/name he’ll pick next.

Don’;t get me wrong, I’m glad we have the film, but it has always been an oddly choppy and lifeless production. (There was even an attempt at a sort of sequel, which flopped tremendously. Called, IIRC, Hero. Best forgotten.)
