I’ve been a little disappointed in the low level of vitriol n’ derp so far in the Democratic campaign, so I was glad to see Susan Sarandon say maybe Trump would be better than Hillary because revolution.
Of course, the reality is that almost no Bernie supporters will vote for a Republican in November if Hillary’s the nominee and almost no Hillary supporters will vote Republican in November if Bernie’s the nominee.
On the other hand, I’m not so sure about the #NeverTrump people. I originally thought they’d all come around to Trump if he’s the nominee (I don’t think it’s a given he will be) but now I’m not so sure. Federal Republican office holders and national GOP party operatives have to back him because it’s the smart move (Tessio was always smarter), but I wonder if the conservative punditocracy can use the Trumpocalypse to prove to the world that they truly are independent-minded Burkeans of no clique or party.
Is there any chance that we could see a post-Both Sides Do It campaign? I’m not talking about the real dead enders — I know Ron Fournier will be in a bunker tweeting death to the duopoly for years after our current political system, as well as twitter, have ceased to exist. But now that Cokie herself is committing journalism against Trump….

I fall into the camp that suspects that he doesn’t want to be President, was looking for some yooooooge publicity and was then surprised to find himself viable. Trump loathes losing, so he can’t just drop out, but if the nomination is “stolen” from him, all of the missed filing deadlines would allow him to run as an independent while allowing him to define “winning” as “preventing a Republican victory.” So, he’d be able to claim victory without actually having to be president.

Al worked with Abbie Hoffman until Hoffman’s death and was a pretty serious radical. Up to now, I have completely stayed out of the Bernie vs. Hillary wars because I think both candidates have things to recommend them and think they’re fundamentally both decent people. I think the party needs to get Bernie’s message through its thick skull and it needs to pull out of its neo-liberal crouch, but I think Hillary brings a lot of talents to the job that Bernie doesn’t. Neither is at all perfect. In the end, I voted for Bernie in my state’s primary (for all the good it did), and I have continued to believe that his continued strength actually helps the party, despite the nastiness that has occurred among supporters in recent weeks. Susan Sarandon is now making me question that.
I find her comments horrendously offensive, particularly the comment about a Trump election “bring[ing] about the revolution immediately”. The revolution she’s talking about is not the revolution Bernie is talking about – at least not the one I’ve heard him talk about. The revolution she’s talking about is people dying in the streets and blood flowing in all of our cities as the people rise up against Trump and our country burns to the ground. Maybe things will be better (for the survivors) after such a revolution, although I wouldn’t want to bet on it. Revolutions rarely turn out the way you hope for, and, just like any war, they leave lots of people dead and maimed in their wake.
Bernie is calling for regular citizens to rise up and take control of the democratic process away from the powerful elites – a goal that I think most Democrats would embrace. Sarandon, whether she even realizes it or not, is calling for the pain and suffering of lots of other people with a pathetically naive belief that “it will be worth it”.
Fuck you, Susan. Anyone who could say what you said is not a Bernie supporter, but a nihilist. Go ahead and vote for Trump – he fits you. And congratulations. You’ve made this Bernie voter “ready for Hillary”.

@Face:
In 2012, 54% of voters were female. Simply put, women are more likely to vote than men.
Of that 54%, 56% voted for Obama vs 44% for Romney. So, assuming party loyalty among women doesn’t switch away from Clinton to Trump then 30% of the electorate (.54*.56) are already a lock for Clinton. I’d argue that is going to both turn out new voters and party switchers. 30% is already a pretty big advantage for Clinton. Remember, the GOP already needs to pick up demographics that they lost in 2012. They lost women and they lost Latinos both in large enough numbers to re-elect Obama. They need to win both categories back over 2012. I see no possible way they will even match their 2012 numbers with those two groups and there simply aren’t enough white men to get them to 50%.
This creates huge downticket problems for the GOP. They can’t gerrymander women. If this shifts the women vote even a little bit, the GOP is fucked in all of their races. They won a lot of seats by just a few points – that’s what gerrymandering does – it trades a few landslides for a lot of narrow victories.

This is where I have to disagree with Cole and the rest of the front-pagers. You folks think that even if the Republican party nominated a reanimated pygmy skink the rank-and-file Republican voter will dutifully pull the lever for that candidate…but, amazingly enough, Republican voters are people, not cartoons. There are limits to what a Republican voter can stomach.
We saw that in 1912 when the Repubs crushed T.R.’s effort to run for a third term — lots of Republican voters bolted the party and never came back. They formed part of the New Deal coalition 20 years later. In the late 1970s, many Republican voters couldn’t bring themselves to vote for Gerald Ford after he pardoned Nixon. They too left the Republican party for a time.
We’re seeing the same thing here. Hair Furor is just too much for many Republican voters to stomach. They’re going to either sit this one out or vote for Hillary. Once they switch to voting for a Democrat, many of ’em won’t came back to the Republican party. Because…c’mon, folks! Does the Republican party look like it’s getting more sane to you?
If the Republican party keeps riding the current crazy train and applauding candidates who say we need to let people who can’t afford health insurance die in the streets, a significant chunk of current Republican voters are lost forever. Third parties don’t often arise in U.S. politics, so those voters will either drop out of the electorate altogether in disgust, or they’ll vote Democratic.
Either way this has larger implications for the makeup of the senate and House.
None of the front-pagers seem to have realized this. But you will, once the extent of the Democratic landslide in the 2016 presidential election becomes clear.
Nate Dawg
@mclaren: I think everyone is being cautiously optimistic given the inherent difficulties of winning a third term, and the volatility of the GOP race and Clinton’s epic fuck-up in 2008.

I have friends who are military officers who are died-in-the-wool right-wing Republicans but loathe Trump. I suspect they actually will go vote for a third party if Trump is the nominee. If Trump somehow does win he is going to find the military (and probably the intelligence agencies) difficult to deal with, which maybe is reassuring. Or maybe it means that the military will stage a coup two years into a farcical Trump presidency.

Doug: “…but I wonder if the conservative punditocracy can use the Trumpocalypse to prove to the world that they truly are independent-minded Burekans of no clique or party.”
As soebody put it, by August, they’ll be stroking their beards in a showy show of deliberate thought and backing Trump – ‘because Hillary is sooooooo bad!’.

Not without some decidely extracurricular hijinks.
FTR here is the relevant text from Amendment XII:
If third-, fourth-, …nth-party candidate managed to win enough EVs to deny either of the two major-party candidates a majority in the Erectoral Collage, then the House would choose between the top 3 in EVs, and no one else. So in order to be (s)elected as President, the ZEGS would need to receive, not just one or 2 EVs for USACEO, but a sufficient number to finish in the top 3.
I can’t come up with a plausible scenario for that. The closest (in the same sense as Proxima Centauri is the closest star not our sun, i.e., not very fucking close) would be something like–
Yeah, not bloody likely.
