The flooring is starting to go in. We’re starting on the top floor and working our way down. Here’s the third floor hallway leading to the staircase (which will be carpeted):
And here is third floor bedroom #2:
This is the bedroom across from this bedroom:
I love the orange (I should, I picked it out) and with all the white on the ceiling and the wood it looks GREAT! Obviously the quarter round is not in yet. The floors are going to look so good I am almost excited enough I can stop thinking about money!
And, as a bonus, here is Harry and Chatman’s pig Coop dressed up for the holidays:
Winning, my friends.
Baud
I’m floored.
MazeDancer
The floors are gorgeous.
As is the pig.
Villago Delenda Est
The pig is AMAZING!
Floors aren’t bad, either!
Steeplejack
That pig looks like Newt Gingrich.
Jim, Foolish Literalist
Some pig
Baud
The pig should be in show business.
Kristine
Floors are lovely.
Pig is awesome.
debit
Looking good, JC. The pig too.
SiubhanDuinne
I am in love with Coop.
I want to marry him and have his piglets.
Origuy
SOME PIG!
SiubhanDuinne
@Steeplejack:
No such thing! You hush now, hear?
Auntie Anne
Those floors are gorgeous! What kind of wood, John? And are they engineered hardwood? I’m jealous – all I have is 1950s parquet.
Yarrow
@Steeplejack: What did that pig ever do to you?
Manyakitty
Those floors came out fantastic, and what a fine looking pig!
Hungry Joe
Is there a sign-up sheet for crashing at Cole’s new place?
BillinGlendaleCA
Now I’ve got this song playing in my head.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Hungry Joe: Nah, just show up.
Baud
@Hungry Joe:
@BillinGlendaleCA:
And bring a mop, or a jar of mustard.
SiubhanDuinne
Given your earlier “Angry River” post, John, it was easy enough to read this one as
Omnes Omnibus
Why would someone do that to a pig?
Mike J
I used to be concerned about John posting pictures with exif data still in, including icbm addresses, but after this morning’s post I know not to worry.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Baud: It’d be rude not to bring an appropriate house warming gift.
Kay Eye
Wait. Is that pig in your house? Not a good idea. He sure is cute, but still…
Lizzy L
I think the orange is great too, and the flooring looks beautiful. As does the pig.
SiubhanDuinne
@Baud:
Or a Subaru.
John Cole
@Mike J:
If they want to fuck with me they can COME AND FUCKING GET SOME.
Baud
@Omnes Omnibus: Beats the alternative.
Neldob
What a good expression on that piggy’s face.
Soonergrunt
Nice floors!
La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes)
Love the floors. Cut pig.
Next Christmas we can have a meet up chez Cole!
raven
@Mike J: Like it would be hard to find him in Bethany.
BillinGlendaleCA
@John Cole: Just bring mustard.
BillinGlendaleCA
@raven: Just listen and when you hear, “God Damnit Rosie”, you’ve found Cole’s abode.
raven
@BillinGlendaleCA: Or just listen for a “thud”.
Iowa Old Lady
This house is going to be so gorgeous.
The pig, not so much. But he’s comfy in his pigness.
JPL
I’m still in love with the molding. The house is gorgeous and may you have many happy years there. Don’t eat the pig, because that will cause bad luck.
SiubhanDuinne
@La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes):
Is that like sliced pork?
Darren
The carpeted stairs is a very good plan for when Steve trips you at the top
EBT
Pigs always seem so much cooler with costumes than cats, dogs, or ferrets.
p.a.
Orange is my favorite color, but the closest I’ve had the balls to use in my house is terracotta/aztec red as paint accents. A kitchen redo may have walls of Matisse orange (think the orange in Black Philodendron and Lemon) instead of the current yellow.
Emma
Oh. Coop looks exactly like my own beloved Bubu, who passed into Summerland three years ago. They are fun pets.
BillinGlendaleCA
@Emma:Summerland, CA?
schrodingers_cat
I have to say that I like the orange better than the pink, sorry thistle!
schrodingers_cat
@SiubhanDuinne: Pancetta.
Mike in NC
Flooring in first picture looks much like the wide, distressed looking Mohawk laminate we had installed throughout the house last month to replace 14 year old off-white carpeting that had been abused by three cats and us red wine-spillers. But having a real Christmas tree means pine needles end up in every room in the house.
La Caterina (Mrs. Johannes)
@SiubhanDuinne: Erm, cute. Sorry Coop.
MomSense
@schrodingers_cat:
I introduced my mom to Salman Khan tonight. She’s a fan.
rikyrah
LMAO at the pig pic.
The floors look good.??
raven
Ezikial Elliot just jumped in a huge Salvation Army Tub in the end zone!
Aleta
Coop the ridiculed pig said it first.
MomSense
@p.a.:
My friend painted her kitchen a tangerine color and it is gorgeous. I was not expecting to like that choice but it really is pretty.
NotMax
Ought to be a no-brainer, but know of people who did otherwise. As the baseboards weren’t removed and reset and the plan is to put in quarter round, stain it before installing.
Found some beautiful quarter round mahogany molding at the Habitat store one time. Never know what they’re gonna have (for next to no money, too!).
raven
@NotMax: On Maui?
John Revolta
Well, I’ve been suspecting it for a few days and now it’s official. Cole has No More Fucks Left to Give.
opiejeanne
@schrodingers_cat: Which looks lilac to me. I chickened out painting the guest room lilac, took the bucket back to the store and had them darken it, so now we have a purple guest room.
Everyone laughs when I tell them I have a purple guest room, for some reason.
schrodingers_cat
@MomSense: Did you know that he is a relative of mine? Which movie did you see?
opiejeanne
@Mike in NC: We have an artificial tree at the cabin, and there are REAL pine needles on the floor under it. We just can’t win.
schrodingers_cat
@opiejeanne: It reminds me of Tinkie Winkie
Woodrowfan
the pig pic made my day!
opiejeanne
@Mike J: I’ll have to go look for this morning’s post.
opiejeanne
@schrodingers_cat: Hehehe.
NotMax
@raven
Yup.Never know what’s gonna be there; it’s a treasure hunt. Last trip there they had 50 or 60 brand new Hamilton Beach 5-cup coffeemakers at three bucks each, roughly the same number of brand new (and very stylish) oval wastebaskets for the office at $2 a pop. Sadly, had no use for either.
Best prices on the island for light bulbs, when they have them. Also used power tools.
Spanky (ex P-man)
For some reason I’m getting a hankerin’ for a ham sandwich.
With mustard.
raven
@NotMax: Wowzer!
Mart
Floor looks great.
Assume you know that you need to install a sturdy hand rail. We all should remember to use handrails – no matter if an clumsy old or not..
I did slip on ice yesterday afternoon (not a handrail related incident). Just took my mind off being careful for one step. Feel like hit by a truck. Left shoulder is a mess.
ThresherK (GPad)
@SiubhanDuinne: You’re not the only.one whose brain read that.
@MomSense: Our previous house had this peachish and white paper with…asparagus bunches on it? We could never figure out. But the kitchen was on the west wall, had 1 small window, and didn’t get a lot of light, especially in mornings. That hideous wallpaper did a great job of maximizing and managing the natural and artificial light.
NotMax
@raven
Neglected to mention that bought several 8-foot lengths at a whopping seventy-five cents each. Too good a deal to pass up.
Mike J
@opiejeanne: He posted a map of his one horse town with his current house, his new house, and his parents’ house all circled.
As Raven pointed out, anybody who came to Bethany looking for him probably wouldn’t have much trouble even without a map. I can still worry about him even if he doesn’t.
Aleta
@raven: Boy Maui sounds good tonight. Black ice, temperature going down screaming,wind buffeting anything it pleases.
Corner Stone
There aren’t any hand rails or anything on those stairs?
.

RIP Cole
raven
@Mart: My wife is in the 5th week of her broken wrist. She’s still baking away in there while I sit on my ass scratching the pups and watch the Pokes.
raven
@Aleta: Maui always be good!
Corner Stone
@John Cole:
I would, uh,…like to come and get some. Or is that not what you meant as an old?
Mart
@raven: Do not think anything is broke. Just bruised and torn. First time in my life I hit the deck on the ice (aside from skating). Usually got away with a twenty or thirty step tap dance. Hate getting old.
JPL
@Corner Stone: On an earlier post, he mentioned that would be taken care of.
Steve is going to have so many places to hide in that house, John will besides himself trying to find him. Good Times!
NotMax
@raven
No ka oi, brah.
:)
Retr2327
What, no lipstick?
NotMax
@JPL
Three story cat tree.
raven
@Mart: Torn can be worse than broken, especially that labrum.
raven
Jamois is dumb as shit.
Corner Stone
@JPL:
Sorry, but given the specs on that old house, Cole will find it impossible to be beside himself in basically everywhere except the porch.
Mart
@raven: Now you made me Google labrum. I guess I will try rest. “Treatment for a labral tear can include restricted rest, physical therapy or surgery, depending on the needs of the individual and severity of the injury.”
NotMax
@raven
Based on your recommendation, am slowly working my way through The Time In Between. Not uninteresting, however when it comes to some parts, have seen glaciers move faster. The collection of period autos they use is fascinating.
My Spanish is decidedly rusty but can pick out discrepancies between the dialogue and subtitles that presume are due to laziness. Netflix subtitling is too often inconsistent in accuracy, and the spelling lackadaisical. The latter irks me more.
satby
@Kay Eye: Pet pigs can be housebroken. Just saying.
Zinsky
The pig has a startling resemblance to the president-elect!
satby
@John Cole: That’s right!
And I love the orange too. The floors look great, and this house will be wonderful.
rikyrah
@Corner Stone:
Oh man…You are right.
Where are the railings, Cole?
NotMax
Pink carpet on the stairs would tie the whole shebang together.
/couldn’t resist
lamh36
A blue room!!!!
I approve! I love that color blue.
What room is that?
opiejeanne
@Aleta: Are you in Lake Arrowhead? Because that’s what we have.
Larkspur
Don’t you have to have railings? I mean, building code-wise. I guess it depends on the town or county.
Sometimes it gets icy around here, first thing in the morning. One time I’d just started a new house-sitting job, and as I was taking the dog out into the yard, I remember thinking “Huh, those steps look shiny. I’d better grab the rail….” But suddenly I was airborne and then thumpety-thumpety thump and I was flopped onto the brick landing. Ow.
Bless her heart, the dog came over and did not laugh at me. Nothing broken or torn, just some spectacular bruises I couldn’t show anyone but the dog. I coulda used a couple of Vicodin that night, but they don’t give em out very freely around here. Especially if you have a pesky psych history like I do. I don’t experience “pain”. I go straight from “discomfort” to “drug-seeking behavior”. Luckily I have no serious chronic pain issues.
Omnes Omnibus
@Larkspur: It is a work in progress. I am guessing that railings are on the agenda.
Dave
@Steeplejack: looks more like Hilary to me!
Larkspur
@Omnes Omnibus: Yeah, I looked at the photo again and the stairway simply looks pre-railing, not railing free.
Yarrow
@Larkspur: Cole stated in an earlier post that yes, there will be railings. I think they are waiting until the other stuff is done so the railings don’t get in the way.
J R in WV
@Mart:
Ice at first, it will really help the pain and reduce swelling. Not playing a doctor, but whenever I hurt something, I ice it down, just as you see on the sidelines at any football game. Ice it down.
ETA: Tomorrow you might want to get it looked at, even get physical therapy arranged once it’s ready for that. Shoulders are hard to get right if they get F’ed up. So don’t mess around with it.
J R in WV
@Larkspur:
Here in WV, while there is a building code, enforcement is limited to more developed and/or urban areas.
Seriously, I know a guy who built a tree house, multi-story building in several oak trees, and lived in it for years. Had a hoist for firewood and water… also keeps horses, but not in the treehouse.
Sometimes you want to be strictly to code, and sometimes you want to be more freehand, and you can do that here. I know a guy who builds log homes, starting with cutting down trees in the woods. They’re built like dove-tailed jewelry boxes, it takes him years to do one.
Another neighbor built a 3 story home, every piece of wood was a tree on his farm, he built a sawmill first, with 19th century iron parts, found an old-timer in his 90s to teach him sawyering. Then he cut trees, let them air dry, and cut them into lumber. Nice house.
Interesting folks. Good neighbors. I’m sure it’s similar in Bethany. And I’m sure there will be railings on the stairs AND the front steps.
We need a rail on our front steps, but it’s hard as they’re curved and stone. I’m pondering how to do it.
Mnemosyne
@J R in WV:
Not only did this make me laugh, I read it out loud to G and he laughed, too.
Steeplejack (tablet)
@Dave:
Them’s fighting words around here, matey.
Larkspur
@J R in WV: Great story.
You know, to be perfectly honest, I think that I don’t do this commenting thing very well. I think I sound critical or snippy when I really mean to – I don’t know – lighten things up a little. I think I need to give my participation some more thought.
But that tree house sounds so great. I imagine going to sleep and hearing the horses around below. I’d want to have the dogs up with me, though.
opiejeanne
@Larkspur: You’re doing fine. You don’t sound snippy to me.
Larkspur
@opiejeanne: Thanks, opiejeanne.
