Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Today’s gop: why go just far enough when too far is right there?

He seems like a smart guy, but JFC, what a dick!

It is not hopeless, and we are not helpless.

“They all knew.”

Pessimism assures that nothing of any importance will change.

The republican speaker is a slippery little devil.

Every reporter and pundit should have to declare if they ever vacationed with a billionaire.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

Lick the third rail, it tastes like chocolate!

It’s always darkest before the other shoe drops.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

Speaker Mike Johnson is a vile traitor to the House and the Constitution.

Sadly, there is no cure for stupid.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

Accountability, motherfuckers.

Hey Washington Post, “Democracy Dies in Darkness” was supposed to be a warning, not a mission statement.

A democracy can’t function when people can’t distinguish facts from lies.

Many life forms that would benefit from greater intelligence, sadly, do not have it.

Never give a known liar the benefit of the doubt.

Giving in to doom is how we fail to fight for ourselves & one another.

Bark louder, little dog.

“The defense has a certain level of trust in defendant that the government does not.”

You don’t get to peddle hatred on saturday and offer condolences on sunday.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

On the Road is a weekday feature spotlighting reader photo submissions.

From the exotic to the familiar, whether you’re traveling or in your own backyard, we would love to see the world through your eyes.

Submit Your Photos

Good Morning All,

So far, this feature has been about travel, with the occasional “local” picture or two. I think limiting this to just travel is just that – limiting. So I’m changing this up a bit to include neat, colorful, funny, interesting, poignant, etc. pictures that don’t require travel – for you!

As always, if you’re on a trip or have a story to share, you can just pitch in below. Please hold off sending new pictures as the new form will launch Monday.

Travel safely everyone, even if it’s just down the hall for that second cup of coffee. Most importantly, have a great weekend!

I attended a classic car show Wednesday with my beloved 1953 Pontiac Chieftain at the Greene County’s fairgrounds in SW Ohio. I’ve been to some shows over the past two years with her and it’s a blast. Car collectors are fun and friendly people and the shows are a mutual admiration society.

So at the end of the event, the awards in each car class were announced and my car won first place in her division! Wow! It was a first for me and very exciting. The “trophy” is actually a plaque, and it will hang in my guest room.

My car is periwinkle and white, which are new colors, not original, but she has the original interior and it’s pretty good for a car her age. She gets a whopping ten miles to the gallon and drives like a tank, but I love her!

Awesome what a thing of beauty!

Who: ET
Where: 7th Street on Capitol Hill in DC
When: 4th of July 2017

These are from the parade on the Hill. The Marine are from the Marine
Barracks just down the street and that includes the Band members.

There were some Hill schools and groups including a dance troupe from a
local public housing community. My favorites were the Samba group (gold
with the skirts) and the Bolivian group (green). All the groups big and
small felt really American.

Great, wonderful shots – thanks ET!

And, to wrap up this week, a little critter:

This is Buddy. He is a big reason that I have been kept relatively sane, in the wake of Superstorm Sandy “recovery”. It was taken a few minutes ago. Bradenton, Fl. Jim Parene

What a gorgeous friend. I swear, without my animals (cats), I can’t see making it through much worse than a hangnail. They keep you grounded, fill your heart with wonder and love, and touch you like no person can, if you’re lucky. I can tell you are.  Thanks Jim, and do share more!

See you next week everybody

I.m off to see the in-laws this weekend, which means:
    1. I miss a softball game tonight against our arch-rivals.
    2. I won’t get to watch either the Tour De France or the Open Championship, basically 2 of the things that I love most on TV.
    3. I get to listen to my BIL, who still supports Christie, and who is 67, diabetic, and needs knee replacement surgery, rant against Obamacare.

My car is periwinkle and white,

Every time I see that word, I can’t help but think of Mickey in Snatch: “She’s terribly partial to periwinkle blue Boys.”

Love today’s pics! Greetings from Pine Knoll Shores (Bogue Banks, Southern Outer Banks of NC)! Off for an early morning beach walk with Poco! It’s hot here…but not like the heat we fled in St. Louis. Have a great day!

We just landed in England to see the inlaws. Virgin Atlantic is at least still providing free international booze. The weather in Oxfordshire is much more comfortable than the recent east coast heat wave. On our way to Wales later this weekend. Hopefully Trump doesn’t embarrass the country more than 2-3 times while I’m over here.

We are heading to London, too, and stratford on avon and oxford and bath. Haven’t been there for a couple of years and we are taking our daughter as a graduation present (she’s a mad shakespeare fan) and meeting our other daughter after her six month stint in spain. So I’m excited but also filled with the ennui of having to get things ready for departure.

@OzarkHillbilly: He’s Antoine Batiste in Treme. If you haven’t watched it I think you would enjoy it. We have one episode to go on our second time around and it’s even better. Clarke Peters is also incredible as Big Chief.

@MomSense: You are sweet! I felt that the use of the word ennui was a bridge too far and no one would forgive me! I am very excited to do this trip–we will see Julius Ceasar and Antony and Cleopatra while in Stratford and then Hamlet at the Barbican and two other productions at the Globe (that I’m so much less excited about that I’ve forgotten what they are since we have seen them many times, of course often as god awful student productions!) We have all been so busy this year, or so apart from one another, that this trip will be wonderful even if we just hang out and do nothing together in libraries, bookstores, and cafes.

That car is so beautiful! And the plaque is striking — visually interesting and not just the usual rectangle with etching.

This week, we are going to apply for antique plates for our not so beautiful 1991 Volvo station wagon — the car we used to bring our first child home from the hospital, and then, so many years later, to move her into her college dorm.

    @aimai:

Lists are your friend when packing up a family for a big trip. Then subtract about half of what you think you should bring because lugging a ton of stuff around is the worst.

Some friends of mine just came back from London and managed to see Much Ado About Nothing at the Globe. They were beside themselves with glee. Can’t wait to hear about your trip.

Yesterday a tornado hit the area 10 to 15 miles from home. Thankfully there were no injuries or deaths. It propelled Gov. Cuomo to visit the damage on the fairgrounds and to reassure all will be ready for next month’s county fair.

Love the county emergency system for sending me a warning on my cell at 12:58 pm to take cover while the all clear was 1:00 pm.

Great photos and love the car.

@Van Buren: We subscribed to NBC Sports Gold through our Roku so we could watch the Tour de France on our schedule, and as much of it per day as we want to. We will miss it after 3 weeks, but getting to bed at a decent hour will be a welcome change.

There were some screaming good deals on flights from Denver to Zurich a few weeks ago, so we’re headed there in mid September to do some via ferrata’s (klettersteg) and mountain biking in Austria. This time we can just bring outdoor gear instead of our other big trips that were half serious city tourism and half mountaineering, so I’m hoping for much lighter bags.
