Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

I’d hate to be the candidate who lost to this guy.

Reality always gets a vote in the end.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

The current Supreme Court is a dangerous, rogue court.

Republicans: The threats are dire, but my tickets are non-refundable!

Republicans: “Abortion is murder but you can take a bus to get one.” Easy peasy.

To the privileged, equality seems like oppression.

Humiliatingly small and eclipsed by the derision of millions.

He really is that stupid.

Live so that if you miss a day of work people aren’t hoping you’re dead.

All hail the time of the bunny!

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Not rolling over. fuck you, make me.

Boeing: repeatedly making the case for high speed rail.

Imperialist aggressors must be defeated, or the whole world loses.

… riddled with inexplicable and elementary errors of law and fact

if you can’t see it, then you are useless in the fight to stop it.

You are so fucked. Still, I wish you the best of luck.

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

If ‘weird’ was the finish line, they ran through the tape and kept running.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

America is going up in flames. The NYTimes fawns over MAGA celebrities. No longer a real newspaper.

Here’s what the moon looks like over my house tonight:

One of my dogs licked a poisonous toad or something. Nothing to worry about — it happens a couple of times a year. The downside is, she spends the rest of the night vomiting onto throw rugs. She refuses to puke on the comparatively large expanses of wipe-clean tile or easy-care wood flooring. Nope, she’s gotta find a throw rug upon which to expel the contents of her stomach, and the deeper the nap, the better.

It hasn’t been a good night, what with de-puking the rugs and thinking about the Nazi scumbags converging on Virginia and the larger implications of that. Oh, and being unable to sleep. And the months marred by an undercurrent of formless dread.

Turns out living through a time of heightened madness, painful uncertainty and senseless upheaval is not as easy as adjusting to a shitty job, an irritating roommate or comparable personal calamity. Now I know! Open thread.

Betty, ever tried valerian root? I find it plus a vitamin c often put me into a vey restful deep sleep. Since I’m up so early, I clearly didn’t take one last night! Time to go capture a cat for forced snuggle!

@Alain the site fixer: Valerian root doesn’t work the same for everyone; it makes me wired, I did find a tea that works from Rose Mountain herbs.
But I have found that the most relaxing of teas or tinctures doesn’t work when overwhelmed by idiots.

I seem to recall that when I was-into/had-ready-access-to psychedelics, I required a rug to puke on as well.

Something like that. Memory a bit hazy.

I changed The Girl’s strings for the first time! Alas, I broke one of the new strings — nervousness, I guess. So the string change wound up needing one set of 9-gauge D’Addario XL120s plus the high E string from a second set. (Luckily I’d had the prescience to buy two sets of strings at The Guitar Store in Subang Jaya. I’ll need to buy another couple of sets soon, though. I figure I did about as well as I could have expected.Soon I’ll tune her up; then we can practice chords again and maybe even start on scales tomorrow.

    That Moon is lovely.

    Well shit:

Amazon has not received confirmation from the supplier of your order that they sourced the item from a recommended manufacturer. We recommend that you DO NOT use this product to view the sun or the eclipse.

My goodness, Amazon should have set a deadline for that supplier’s confirmation well enough ahead of time so its customers would have plenty of time to find replacements. Or even better, it shouldn’t have listed the product without the confirmation.

I’ve got plenty of time to let them know but it’s not going to help them and their munchkins. Last night our local neighborhood film group screened

Man with a Movie Camera (Russian: Человек с кино-аппаратом (Chelovek s kinoapparatom), Ukrainian: Людина з кіноапаратом (Liudyna z Kinoaparatom) – sometimes called A Man with a Movie Camera, The Man with the Movie Camera, The Man with a Camera, The Man with the Kinocamera, or Living Russia)[1] – is an experimental 1929 Soviet silent documentary film, directed by Dziga Vertov and edited by his wife Elizaveta Svilova.

    and

Ladislas Starevich’s 1912 classic short “The Camera Man’s Revenge”

    complete with sound effects!

Man With a Movie Camera was interesting but it’s a little long for my taste.

I thought it was just cats would rather puke on any surface that wasn’t bare. We have two kitties that tend to puke, one more than the other. I’ve experimented with different dry cat food and used laxatone for hairballs. One kitty pukes more often because she inhales her food and then steals what is left of the other cat’s food. I’m now trying three rocks in their food dishes to make them slow down eating around the rocks.

I just love how the kitties puke on throw rugs and bedspreads seemingly right after I have laundered them. They have also puked while sitting on chairs. It’s so much fun cleaning up chairs and chair rungs. If I’m lucky, I’ll hear that dreaded sound of a kitty starting to puke and grab it fast enough to get it to the bare floor to unload. After decades of owning cats, I couldn’t count how many times a cat pukes in the night while we were sleeping and we step right on the puke with bare feet when getting up in the dark.

Yet we put up with the downsides. Right now I have a kitty sitting in my lap purring, nuzzling and pushing her face against mine. She’s reminding me it’s time for breakfast.

Great picture of the Moon, Betty. I am having buyer’s remorse about my new Sony Cybershot. I think I should have paid the extra $200-300 and gotten an entry-level DSLR. Even with 24 mpix, my moon pix are nowhere near as sharp as yours. Well played.

One of our Catahoula’s features is that he has some kind of issue with tile floors. For a long time, he would only walk backward on the tile until he got to one of the few throw rugs we had scattered around the house. We finally broke down and spent good money getting several long, narrow runners so he can navigate almost the entire house without having to do the moonwalk…bed to couch, couch to food and water, food and water to dog door, repeat in reverse order.

And, oh yeah, he has always pukes on rugs which can make walking around bare-footed an adventure.

Keep looking up and I hope you snag some good pics of the eclipse, from where ever you experience it.

    “formless dread”

No kidding, I feel that wrapped around my insides every day. It’s an uneasy feeling, slightly malevolent and always circulating through me. Had a mild case of it during the Bush years, but it’s always with me now.

I rely on Colbert to break it up every night, though. His monologues remind me to laugh, albeit nervous laughter.

Yea Betty I know what you mean. Lately I have found myself on overload politically. The open Nazis running the show have made me purposefully shut down politically for short periods. I can’t do it 24/7 & this administration would easily drive someone over the edge. I kinda think that’s part of Bannon’s chaos theory. Eh, karma works just not soon enough for some people. But I come back. We have to. Vacations from it are OK though.

    Raven,

#14 welder’s glass is the darkest and is suitable for viewing the eclipse, according to all the sites I have seen.

I’m going to visit a welding shop and see if they have some, although we have what appears to be correct glasses and filters for both my camera and binoculars. And you won’t want to use any protection during totality if you’re located in the path.

We’re going to W Kentucky to try to see, if the weather holds up.

    @raven:

For a vaguely similar but much more entertaining silent film, watch Buster Keaton’s Sherlock Jr. He has a sequence in there where the character jumps from location to location that’s still astounding today. They had to use surveying equipment to make sure he would be in exactly the right spot in the frame.
