Thanks for helping my sister out, she met her goal. Dinner was great, and this about sums up the general mood at Casa de Tunch:

This is a much better version, but you can’t embed it. Dunno if I have ever mentioned how much I like Waylon and actual real country music, but now I have. One of these days we will have to talk about the relationship between outlaw country and their defense of rap musicians, but we can leave that for some other time.

They don’t make ’em like Waylon anymore.

    Well, hell, finally! I didn’t think from earlier discussions about music on this here blog that anyone had any use at all for any county.

    I grew up on this stuff. By high school I was into headbanger everything, but when I quit drinking at 26 I decided a change was in order and headed back toward county. I like the outlaw stuff, and some of the modern stuff and even some bluegrass. This is one of my all time favorites.

    I’m trying to talk my husband into going with me to see Dylan and Willie at Summerfest in Milwaukee in June, but he’s not big on concerts and daughter for all of her eclectic taste in music, does not have a real appreciation for this type of music.

    Now, of course, I love it – the music I grew up with: Bakersfield, Outlaw, Hank Sr., Possum, that kind of Country music.

    You might like Ben Elton’s stuff, though it might be kind of hard to find in the States. He had a hand in a fair amount of Brit TV comedy in the 1980s, stuff like Blackadder, but his books are much darker (no less funny). Not very sci-fi-ish, IIRC – even Stark, which is about a space travel venture, is actually about the reasons behind it and the people involved.

I guess their commercial sale are good, but outside of David Allen Coe and Reba McEntire- Fancy, what anthem for country music can you think of? For me, it all went to hell when I was forced to listen to that god damned Lee Greenwood song on AFN every 20 minutes when I was in theatre. Other than Allison Krauss and a few others, I would almost give up on the entire genre.

    I used to hate country, then I started playing in a Country-Punk band. It expanded my view of Country from the rock-pop-yodel of Garth Brooks to Nelson, Hank, Waylon and Coe.

    Check out Straight To Hell by Hank III. F’n awesome modern country record. The flat pickin’ on that record is amazing.

IMO some of his best work (and hers) outside of what he did with Willie Nelson or his band the Outlaws.     When I lived in Phoenix, there was a liquor store and a non-desrcript building next to it with an old pepsi sign hanging off the front. It took me a while to figure out that it was a bar. On a halloween night I stumbled in there looking for a night cap.

    As I walked in, I saw two really HOT chicks talking on the phone. I walked up to the bartender and ordered a Bud, he said that’ll be a quarter.

    I’m like, HOLY SHIT!!! WHY HAVE I NOT BEEN A FIXTURE IN THIS PLACE!!!??!

    So I’m sipping my bud looking around and I noticed the hot chicks had left. The more I looked around, I saw it was all guys…getting cozy with each other.

    Well I ain’t getting laid I thought, but I sure as hell am getting drunk off of quarter beers. I was a fixture there ever Thursday night on quarter beer night.

    About 10 years later I moved to the Castro in San Francisco. I’ve lived in most areas of the city, and the Castro and Mission are my two favorite, although my wife used to get a little annoyed when the guys would steal her People magazine, read it then return it to the mailbox.

    Yeah apparently SF has become a DJ mecca along side of the UK. I suppose that makes sense when you think of the 60s where the majority of music came from either England or San Francisco.

    I know a lot of DJs, some of the tops in the Bay Area, and I’ll admit it, I don’t get it. I get electronic music, I love it, I get playing in a band ( I do ). I even get scratch DJs who make the turn table an instrument.

    I do not get why people follow certain DJs that simply mix other people’s music into a flow of music for an hour. I mean I used to DJ on radio. I did it quite for quite a few years. I understand how to program a show, how to fit the mood, but it’s really not that hard and I don’t think takes anything more than keeping in touch with what’s popular and then dictating a tempo.

    Yeah I get that it takes some thought, but I scratch my head at the thought that some douche makes $$$$ a night at Ruby Skye, while a band that can write a tune, works their ass off to perfect the performance gets paid…usually a beer.

    …and yes there are a lot of shitty bands playing shitty songs. But there are also a few bands playing some awesome songs. Yet some guy gets up on a platform puts a few CDs in and he’s a rock star.

    Often you are right. There are a lot of DJ’s in dance music where I just don’t see the value add. Pete Tong, for example, is shit. He can barely mix, and has no idea about track selection.

    Admittedly, I have no idea of any of the above, and like I said I know and understand how to create a mood and flow, but simply doing a segue (and maybe that’s not all they do) seems like a pre-requisite for calling your self a DJ.

    Some do – for many it’s just five seconds while one track stops and another starts. A good DJ (and I know little except what I like) will spend an inordinate amount of time carefully mixing the two or even three or four tracks together in a seamless mix.

    When it comes down to it, it is just playing other people’s tracks one after the other, but some people do it damn well.

    The idea was that you couldn’t hear the transition.

    All of which is to say I wouldn’t scream if you forced me to sit through the director’s cut of Dances with Wolves–unlike anything by Michael Bay. I mean, c’mon, you want “never forget, never forgive.” Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, The Island, Transformers. There are worse criminals walking around than Kevin Costner.

    Ninerdave, Way late in responding to your comment but I was a full-time musician (drummer) in the mid and late 70’s when disco was moving into the bars and taking away our gigs. I know exactly where you’re coming from. ‘Star’ DJs tend to piss me off too.

    In the early days of disco at Sam’s (the bar that was to become First Avenue), they used to hire a drummer to play along with the records to augment the beat. Lol, what a gig from hell that must have been. That was in the days before sound systems became huge and deafening.

    I found it incredibly strange when I found out that Bob Mould from Husker Du had become a DJ in the DC area.
