I dropped Steve off at the vet yesterday morning for a teeth cleaning, and man was the house empty yesterday. It’s funny how even though I still had three dogs in the house, it was just very obvious he was not around. At any rate, I picked him up this morning, and the vets said everything went well and one vet tech even held up his bloodwork and said “Look at this, everything is in he green, that’s abnormal,” so he is a very healthy beast.

Since he went through some trauma, I let him spend the day outside under the back porch re-centering, and it has been a busy night of activities since. We had a little tuna for dinner, then a furminating, and then he spent some quality time facetiming with his BFF Tammy and Charlie:

He’s spent the rest of the night sleeping on my chest/stomach (I’m to the point where I don’t know where one ends and the other begins):

When I pet him I make sure I tell him what a magnificent beast he is. And he is!

    My 93 year old dad had a couple of weeks in the hospital then rehab. His cat is phucking traumatized. Sitting alone in a dark house. Waiting for food deliveries. No chance to go outside. No one to cuddle with on cold nights.

    Dad came home, and cat is ecstatic (in his restrained feline way.) Sitting with Dad all day, and purring like a motorboat.

    I was out today — Doctor appointment and shopping.

    So I’m catching up on the days events — with my cat on my lap. He has the same look on his face as Steve’s.

    A year ago I was in the hospital and then a skilled nursing care place. Cat didn’t see me for over a month. He hasn’t gotten over my abandoning him and so he glues himself to me when I get back from being away — even for just an hour.

    My cat has taught me a whole lot about cats — they are sensitive. They become attached to humans and they miss us. It is much more than the fact we feed them. Steve knows this — so does my darling cat.

    Appreciate him John. I had to put my baby Buddy to sleep yesterday at age 19. His organs just gave out but he was a wonderful, sweet and beautiful cat and I miss his companionship and independent but loving presence.

    A super quiet Valentines Day up in the canyon. We had a nice dinner, filet, baked potatoes and peas. Mrs J made her signature salad. We ate some heart shaped chocolates, watched some pairs figure skating, those Germans killed it didn’t they? And they both immigrated to Germany, she’s originally from Russia and he’s from France, how about that?

    Mrs J is sound asleep after a busy day, Anze the Dog is sleeping and I’m wondering while I’m still awake. Oh, and that Steve is one hell of a cat.

    I got home and heard Keaton snarling and howling (which is bad in a cat). Charlotte had trapped him in the bedroom closet and wouldn’t let him leave. I eventually had to close her up in the bathroom and carry him out.

    Tomorrow they get separated while we’re at work.

    @Sab: My son’s company struggled following the crash in 2008, partly because Arpaio refused to pay them for work they did for him under contract when Arizona’s governor said there was the need to tighten belts. His hours were reduced to about 25 hours a week and he relied on SNAP for a year or so to be able to eat. He’s been fully employed for a while now, some of their clients who were in arrears have paid up (not Arpaio’s contract yet) and his company has been catching up with the back pay they owe him, but it’s still thousands of dollars. But anyway, he feels that SNAP saved his life during the underemployed and underpaid period.

    I’ve watched a checker ring up someone on SNAP and WIC who had two kids and a baby with her. It was a view into a different life. The checker sent the bagger to find the correct item when the one that should have been allowed wouldn’t ring up. She was kind to this lady and she made eye contact with everyone in line behind her letting us know that she wouldn’t put up with any guff from some self-righteous twit.

    Our son could have moved in with us but he’s in his 40s and not enthusiastic about that prospect.

    @Elie: so sorry, Elie. We’ve lost two, one in December and one in January, both lived long, happy lives—but it hurts to say goodbye.

    @opiejeanne: Last year I was behind a young woman in line at the grocery store in Maine as the checker and two managers went though her items and took out those she wasn’t allowed to buy. For instance, she could have shampoo but not conditioner. I had them put all her disallowed items with my purchases and then gave them to her. I actively look for similar opportunities. People should be allowed to allocate those limited funds as they chose.

    John Cole, I’m the one who ought to be sedated when my cats go in for dentals, as I always worry something will go wrong. Happily, nothing ever has, as my terrific vet has an anesthesia protocol fit for humans. Every time I see the glorious Steve, I pine for my beloved departed Maine coon cat, the world’s most perfect cat. May you enjoy his awesomeness for many, many happy years.

    @Skepticat: That was very kind of you. I thought of doing that for this lady but we were pretty broke and payday was several days off. I did buy a car battery for a couple who were broke and thought their battery was still under warranty. I was waiting with several other people to have two new tires installed. Managed to not be the obvious purchaser when the clerk ran to the parking lot and told them it was covered.

    @Sab: I was in the hospital for three weeks and since I’m her primary caregiver, my wife had to go to respite care while I recovered from surgery. (NOTE: we had a cat sitter who came in once a day to make sure they were okay.)

    Our two cats freaked out when I came home. Henry, the older male, hid while Emma, the younger one, followed me around for a few hours, sniffing at me. Finally, she climbed up on my lap and this let Henry know I was okay and he climbed aboard as well.

    I think I was gone so long I didn’t smell ‘right’ anymore.
