Professional sports writer Corbin Smith, at the Daily Beast:
… There are a dozen reasons I can give you why this is racist and idiotic. LeBron James is wildly successful, a dude who has leveraged his gifts into a multi-pronged empire that will, in all likelihood, pay out for the rest of his life. He is publicly beloved, charitable in a way that goes beyond dollars and actually sells a vision of a better world. James is a tremendously brilliant basketball player, an on-court weapon whose tremendous physical gifts are transmogrified into pure competitive heroin by dint of his ability to see the entire court at all times and milk the absolute most efficient play out of nearly every possession he has.
Anyone—anyone—calling him stupid like this is being a goddamn racist, plain and simple—casting aside a body of tremendous work because the color of his skin doesn’t line up with the assumptions that a racist society has about what black men can accomplish. In the case of Trump here, it goes beyond blowing a dog whistle and resembles more of a dog trumpet, an audible blast cascading over the mountains and sticking up the arm hairs of every member of his impressionable, white, QAnon-humping, Extremely Online base…
… We’re living in the goddamn #content presidency, where the president is operating like a sports blogger, watching a goddamn LeBron James CNN interview on Friday night and hunting for some shit he can write about for clicks and attention and juice…
— Brandon Scienski (@dagreatscienski) August 4, 2018
Professional sports-politics writer Cindy Boren, at the Washington Post:
… [H]ere’s the thing about the president’s hot take: It’s too late if his hope is to quash athletes’ commentary and accomplish anything other than resonating with his base.
When it comes to political and social activism, athletes of all colors and genders are finding their voice and refusing to remain silent, whether in vocal, physical or social media demonstrations. The activism may not please the president or owners like the Dallas Cowboys’ Jerry Jones, but it is cascading. Just look at what happened Saturday, after Trump’s tweet about James gained loft.
This is hardly a new development, of course. Athletes, such as Bill Russell, Muhammad Ali, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Jim Brown and others spoke out during the 1960s and helped raise civil rights awareness. But over the last few years, as unarmed black men have been shot to death by police, athletes have been more vocal. Even Jordan, who has scrupulously avoided speaking up about political and social issues, has refused to remain silent…
A revealing moment from @DonLemon's interview with LeBron:
LEMON: What would you say to the president if he was sitting right here?
JAMES: I would never sit across from him.
LEMON: You would never, you don't want to talk to him?
JAMES: No. I'd sit across from Barack, though.— Brian Stelter (@brianstelter) August 4, 2018
Lebron James built a school for children and paid for it himself.
Donald Trump said he would build a wall and make Mexico pay for it but he failed miserably, so instead he separated children from their parents and put them in cages.

A thought exercise: look at the birth circumstances, schooling, life opportunities and inherited wealth of Lebron James and 45 and tell me which of those men can say they’re self made.

Donald Trump, the first troll president. Except of course this is how the Dotard’s brain really works.

There is no Hell hot enough for Donald J. Trump.

I have a feeling LeBron James could beat Agent Orange at anything…..Trivial Pursuit, arm wrestling, curling, Iron Chef, you name it. Let’s try. It can be a reality show.
Unrelated: it’s hot. It’s so hot. I don’t know if I can leave the house tomorrow. It’s so terrible.

@Enhanced Voting Techniques: I think Reagan was 90% troll, 10% diminished capacity (at the beginning of his first term). We can argue on the percentages but not the basic makeup.

@Platonailedit: He’s a terrible businessman. I have no doubt his liabilities exceed his income to such a degree he files negative income tax returns every year. And his accountants get every single refundable credit they can. Remember when Dolt45 qualified for a housing credit in New York that is only claimable if you make under $500,000? The press totally ignored that little factoid.

He’s trying to juice up his base turnout in November with his greatest hits of racism. Hope it’s doing more to turn out LeBron fans and teachers.

Trump has now taken to trolling the State of California, saying we’re responsible for all of the wildfires in the state. He seems to think we have plenty of water and just let too much go to the ocean.
Bruuuuce
At this point, Lebron James is worth his weight in gold to his team.
At this point, Alleged President Trump isn’t worth even the weight of his own turds to his team.
The comparison of real value is left to the student.
The Dangerman
@?BillinGlendaleCA:
When I hear Trump, California, and, most importantly water, I look for Devin Nunes behind it. If I had to guess, it’s about keeping the snail darter alive and not, you know, giving the water to farmers.
Brachiator
@Mary G:
Also, Trump says this stuff because he is a flat out stone cold racist.
Trump is a strange, spiteful little man. If he were still a private citizen, his little spats and feuds would go no further than an occasional episode of TMZ or Entertainment Tonight.
But he is president and demands that everyone show him affection, or at least deference, and continually praise him. Failure to conform invites punishment. And the punishment is always more severe when it involves a black person.
Trump is sick. Unfortunately, because he sits in the White House, Fox News and Trump’s supporters will hustle to come to his defense, and will happily fan the flames of racism to prove their love for their Dear Leader. Any midterm election bounce is a bonus.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: All we had to do was open Shasta Dam all the way up to 11, and the water would have rushed down and taken care of all the California fires. Put them all out if an hour or two. But loser environmental regulations and the low energy Jerry Brown wouldn’t let us. MAGA!
Shasta Dam has huge doors on it, just like the Let’s Make Great DEELZ show, and if you open them up, you can see the prize. Very few people know that. Believe me.

Today’s Boston Glob has an Alex Bean (staff writer) op-ed, which, according to the blurb, says Shitgibbon is a Sooper Jeenyus. Beam is conservative, and sometimes tolerable, but I will be dipped in shit (as the saying goes) if I give that fucking no-longer-liberal-not-even-close rag any clicks, so maybe Beam is not being serious (which is sometimes how he writes).
The Glob ain’t as bad as the FTFNYT, I think, but I remember what it used to be like, and fuck John Henry and the-no-longer-there Mike Sheehan.
SFAW
Although I am still on the Baud!2020 train, I think it would be interesting if LeBron announced he’s running for Pres in 2020. It would drive Fuckhead-in-Chief nuts.
Self-made man, worth more than Tinydick, has not bankrupted any businesses (let alone six or however many Fuckhead has bankrupted), does not need Russian fuckery to be viable. (Although LeBron may not go to Wisconsin?)
On the other hand, the suffering that the RWAs would inflict on LeBron and his family would be pretty fucking bad, so that idea works better as a daydream than anything else.
SFAW
Not to be nit-picky, but wouldn’t “Peon Don” be more fitting

I think the story on Trump University [it is laughable to even type it] is incomplete without clearly saying that the Orange POS got off lightly and that much more money was scammed off of people by use of Dumb*ss Donny’s name and the ignorance of his marks. Pathetically sad.
Jack the Second
@Suzanne: What has LeBron ever done to you, that you want to make him spend so much time around Trump?
If you want someone to suffer for reality TV, you put the whole Trump family in one small house and have them compete with each other in a variety of inane challenges. Winner gets the first chance at a plea deal with Mueller.
Ken
@Jack the Second: When you say “inane challenges”, do you mean a creepy puppet-doll appears on a screen and growls “to escape this room, you must play a game….”

A churl was a revolting peasant (in the Marx Brothers sense). Using the term is the mark of reading a lot of Bernard Cornwell historical novels (or similar). (Peasants were uncouth and unsanitary, hence the derogatory connotation that has usurped the original meaning.) Well-used, I say.
Another good word for Trump to be found in BC’s “Saxon Tales” would be “earsling”.
JWL
I’m not a hoops fan. Still, when James was in 8th grade, I’d heard about him, because NBA scouts were already talking about his potential. If ever a person was set up to crash and burn from being lied to about how great they are compared to everyone else, it was him. Who would have been surprised if James had turned out to be just another young athlete with his head stuck up his ass? What’s he end end up doing? Building a school for kids. General Sherman once wrote of Lincoln that
he possessed more elements of greatness, combined with goodness, than any one he had ever met. I’m not going overboard to equate James with the Rail Splitter. But I discern those same elements in him.
So does Trump, of course. But being Trump and conspicuously lacking those virtues, he resents James for being the man he can only dream of ever being. Oh, and LeBron James is a black man. That too..

James has that cool Lincoln beard, too.
Your points are very well taken.
Ocean dude
Within the basketball universe there is great debate about who is the greatest of all time- Michael Jordan or Lebron James. Jordan rarely made any social commentary. He was criticized heavily for this, Spike Lee being one of the more vocal critics. Trump’s “I like Mike”, is an attempt to ingratiate himself with Jordan fans. It is offensive flattery. It is part and parcel with his history with black american athletes, and for a large segment of white america as well. They love their athletes on the field but lose their shit if they make note of social injustice in racial america. On a hopeful note Muhammad Ali became more beloved as time passed. Not sure if Jordan has commented on the tweet.
JDM
@Ocean dude: Jordan did, succinctly saying “I support LJ”. I’d bet Jordan wasn’t happy with Trump’s attempt to set him up as the “good house negro”, but he’s too classy a guy to not be subtle in his response.
