This weekend was the anniversary of the nationwide March for Our Lives rallies led by survivors of the massacre at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It seems much longer ago somehow. Here’s Emma González’s speech at the event last year:
She doesn’t speak for most of her time at the microphone, commemorating with her silence and tears the six minutes and change it took for a deranged shooter with an AR-15 to end 17 lives. Then she said this: “Fight for your lives before it’s someone else’s job.”
I went to a local March for Our Lives event last year, as did our late jackal friend Schlemazel. He sent me some photos of the march he attended in Minnesota, including this one:
Here’s what he wrote about it:
“It was a gorgeous sunrise this morning and it gave me hope.”
The March for Our Lives founders went silent on the anniversary of the massacre last month. Via The New Yorker:
“It’s about recognizing that we need to take time for ourselves because we’ve been going so strongly for the past year without a breather,” Jaclyn Corin, a senior at Stoneman Douglas and one of the co-founders of the movement, told me in a recent phone call. “We’re giving ourselves that time to be with our friends and our family.”
It still amazes me that those students were able to pull together a movement that resulted in nationwide rallies just a little over a month after the trauma they endured.
The cost was terrible for all of them, and for some, it was unbearable. Last week, two Parkland students committed suicide. The father of a murdered Sandy Hook first grader, a man who created a foundation to prevent violence through research in the wake of his daughter’s senseless killing, was found dead today; he also apparently took his own life.
Those three names won’t be added to the tally of the victims of mass shootings in America, but they’re part of the toll. So now, speaking up for gun safety is our job, not theirs.
Open thread.
Mr Stagger Lee
Damn the NRA, the gutless politicos, and the Ammosexuals. Plus on the death of the Sandy Hook father DAMN ALEX JONES!!!!!
trollhattan
Just learned of the second Parkland suicide this morning and now, a Sandy Hook parent? We have no answers, do we? How can such pain be if not vanquished, countered in a way that life is still worth living? These deaths extend the tragedy and haul the murders front and center all over again.
As NZ’s amazing PM notes, we should never pivot out attention to the murderer, but keep it for the victims and the fight against this madness.
Gravenstone
When the first suicide was reported, my immediate fear was that this might prompt a wave of them as other survivors succumbed to their ongoing struggles. I fervently hope that is not what we’re seeing, and that those who continue to suffer can find the support they need.

I recall reading a blog post by a journalist (wish I could find it again) that claimed that when it came to this movement, everyone reporting on it was glossing over what anyone who works in or around politics knew: that the needed resources had been pulled together by anti-gun groups prior to the shooting in the knowledge that some event like this would happen sooner or later and that a movement could be crystallized around it. (If this is true, I personally applaud the foresight and planning involved.)

Good post, Betty. No one needs a damned assault weapon outside of the military. If you want to hunt, do it with a hunting rifle. A .22, a 30 odd six, a shotgun, whatever. If you can’t use one of those tools to take down a deer or a pheasant, well stay out of the woods. We don’t let certain people drive cars in this country b/c of physical illness, or they got caught driving drunk, but any bone head can get their hands on a gun. Pathetic.

Jeremy Richman father of Avielle Rose Richman took his life this morning in front of the old Newtown town hall. He and Avielle’s mom started a foundation in their daughter’s name after Sandy Hook.
From the foundation’s website:
“The Avielle Foundation has been created in honor of our loving daughter — along with all the others who fall victim to violence — to foster an understanding of what leads someone to engage in harmful behavior, the risk factors, and conversely to identify and engender protective factors that lead away from violence and toward compassion, kindness, connection, community, and resilience. We are working with world leaders in four broad areas: brain health research, public health, community engagement, and education.”

I have to say this again and again. It was just great New Zealand could ban assault rifles and schedule a buy back program in just two weeks. We’ve had 288 school shootings and still we sit and wait for something to be done. Its really fucking shameful and ridiculous, I don’t want to hear how great we as a nation are when we have to worry about our kids in school… This article is from last may https://www.cnn.com/2018/05/21/us/school-shooting-us-versus-world-trnd/index.html

A false narrative? Coming from the man of 9,000 lies. Besides, he’s the presidents. Based on the comment below from Trump in 1992, it would be hard not to speculate about his attraction to a certain demographic group of females:
Donald Trump can be heard making inappropriate remarks to a young girl in a video from a 1992 Entertainment Tonight Christmas special, given to CBS News. The holiday show was filmed at Trump Tower and includes a group of young girls. Trump asks one if she is going up the escalator. When she tells him she is, he says: ‘I am going to be dating her in 10 years’
Please, Donald, come after me!

That said, I agree with your basic point. There’s no good reason for ordinary people to own military-style weapons like the AR-15. The US military used to sell military surplus rifles at least in part so civilians would be more familiar with them and be easier to train in the event of a draft. That does not apply in the case of the AR-15 because:
1) There is no realistic chance of a draft.
2) The AR-15 has fewer realistic civilian uses than WWI/WWII style rifles, which work well for hunting
3) The AR-15 is being sold by gun companies in pursuit of profit, not as military surplus

Glenn Greenwald has gone completely insane and sounds exactly like Sean Hannitty.
We’re about a week away from him taking a regular weekday slot on Fox. His books (which liberals were buying for a decade) were probably profitable for him, so now he’ll need a new niche. He’s the brave warrior against the Democratic Party, which will probably work on Fox.
All of the people who defended him, along with believing that Wikileaks was a “transparency org”, really need to reconsider.

After the people of New Zealand grieved for a week, a week where the people there stood in solidarity with the Muslim community after the massacre–people there protected mosques during prayer, sent food, flowers, escorted those who felt unsafe–all the political parties agreed to significant gun control measures.
The lack of response in the US must be so painful for survivors of gun violence–there is still no national consensus of what gun deaths signify (no way to prevent this…), no change in gun laws, no signs of a way out of continuing gun slaughter. Support on an individual level isn’t enough, there must be a way to bear the pain together. The country is unraveling, slowly and painfully, and will do so until we come together and make the necessary changes.

Almost completely O/T, but the “coward of Broward”, Scot Peterson, the yellow cop who hid in the bushes during the Parkland massacre, gets an annual pension of $105,263. That is way in excess of what his annual salary was, and he only contributed $21,267.53 to his pension plan over 32 years.

Roger Moore
@Amir Khalid:
With almost any description of a round, the first part refers to the caliber, i.e. the diameter of the bullet. If it’s a metric round, the size will be given in mm, so a 5.56 NATO uses a 5.56mm (nominal diameter) bullet. If it’s an America (or British) round, the diameter is given as a fraction of an inch, so a .30-06 uses a .30 inch (7.62mm) bullet. Beyond that, though, there are a lot of different ways of describing a round. The .30-06 is called that because it was originally designed in 1906; it replaced the older and not entirely satisfactory .30-03. Other rounds are named based on a gun they’re used in (e.g. 8mm Mauser), their manufacturer (e.g. .308 Winchester), a military that adopted them (e.g. 5.56 NATO), or the length of the cartridge (e.g. 7.62x39mm).
J R in WV
@Amir Khalid:
The .30-06 is a fairly high-powered rifle cartridge, fairly popular for a very long time. You can get semi-automatic deer rifles in the caliber, but they typically only have a 4 or 5 round magazine., and they don’t reload really fast either. IIRC, mostly one round at a time through the top of the rifle.
So not as useful for mass-shootings.

@Mandalay: I have a close friend who is a cop in Florida. My understanding is that they are supposed to get the average of their three highest payed years. As to the contribution amount versus payout, is that the pension plan is defined benefit. It is not a 401K. Adam L Silverman
@VeniceRiley: There’s a lot of overtime they’re always cranking for. Florida has some really weird rules on these things. For instance, my friend who is a very senior in terms of time on the force and experience, as well as based on past assignments, is basically stuck with his current agency. If one of the other departments or agencies in the area, or even the state agency Florida Department of Law Enforcement, tried to and were successful in recruiting him away his pension doesn’t follow him. They are all agency specific and tethered to them. So he’s about five or six years away from being fully vested. If he were to make a move, even for a significant promotion, he loses what he’s accumulated because he’s not fully vested. Also, the time to achieve fully vested in Florida is longer than in most states. So we have a lot of cops from the northeast or the midwest who were able to fully vest in 15 or 20 years, retire where they are at the age of 40 or 45, move down here for the weather, get the abbreviated LEO certification because they’re retired from agencies in other states, and go right back to work. So they’ve got full pensions plus what they’re earning in their current jobs. That’s not something they should be punished for, but it gives them a leg up on their colleagues who started in Florida.

@trollhattan: My understanding is that the rockets from Gaza are being shot by Palestinian Islamic Jihad members. PIJ is backed by Iran, is headquartered in Damascus because the Assads gave them sanctuary as another Iranian proxy, and could care less what Hamas thinks. What someone really needs to look into is whether the under the table connections the Israelis use to deal with the Iranians, including selling them stuff, going back decades are being used to create a fait accompli on the ground that benefits both Bibi and the Iranian government. Bibi is good for the current leadership of the Islamic Republic and they are good for Bibi in terms of Israel’s and Iran’s domestic politics.

Us Broke a Big Box Office Record—Consider It the Umpteenth Reminder that Black Narratives Are Marketable

The movie that had one of the best marketing campaigns known to man (shout-out to the scissors and fan art, just to name a couple), was helmed by a man debuting a highly anticipated follow-up to his first feature (a huge hit!), and dominated every social media feed for the past few months since its trailer dropped…did really, really fucking well on its opening weekend.
Quelle surprise!
According to TIME, Jordan Peele’s Us raked in $70.3 million in its opening weekend, making it the largest-ever debut for an original horror film. The only films it trails in the genre, It (2018) and Halloween (2018), were a remake and sequel, respectively. The now-blockbuster Us made back its $20 million budget and then some in just a couple of days; and thanks to the classic word-of-mouth marketing technique (which creates major FOMO), that number is only expected to climb—and fast.

None of that makes this right but it is also a mistake to forget the history that got us here in the first place as there is some of the population that seems to think that only the original concepts and ideas are acceptable, and who hold that no change from that is acceptable, even as they misunderstand those original concepts and ideas.
