Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

This has so much WTF written all over it that it is hard to comprehend.

Come on, media. you have one job. start doing it.

“woke” is the new caravan.

Dear elected officials: Trump is temporary, dishonor is forever.

Be a wild strawberry.

Innocent people do not delay justice.

The press swings at every pitch, we don’t have to.

Second rate reporter says what?

When tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty. ~Thomas Jefferson

When you’re in more danger from the IDF than from Russian shelling, that’s really bad.

Stop using mental illness to avoid talking about armed white supremacy.

There are some who say that there are too many strawmen arguments on this blog.

“They all knew.”

Republicans got rid of McCarthy. Democrats chose not to save him.

The desire to stay informed is directly at odds with the need to not be constantly enraged.

Tick tock motherfuckers!

The republican ‘Pastor’ of the House is an odious authoritarian little creep.

I’ve spoken to my cat about this, but it doesn’t seem to do any good.

I would try pessimism, but it probably wouldn’t work.

Republicans: slavery is when you own me. freedom is when I own you.

The unpunished coup was a training exercise.

Our job is not to persuade republicans but to defeat them.

Wow, I can’t imagine what it was like to comment in morse code.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

I didn’t go all in on fundraising for the NC-9 special election earlier because I had heard the poll numbers didn’t look that good for Democrats a few weeks ago. They look pretty good now.

The survey, conducted Aug. 26-28 by Harper Polling and Clarity Campaign Labs, showed McCready (D) with a 46-42 percent advantage over Bishop (R), and two third party candidates receiving a combined 3 percent. When leaners are included, McCready’s advantage extended to 49-44 percent.

Trump won this district by 11 points in 2016.

If we can flip this seat, expect a pretty big Republican freak-out and some more retirements. There have already been quite a few. So let’s raise a little more. I think this is a real opportunity.

John Schimkus announced today that he is retiring in southern IL. A friend of mine ran against him in ’18. It was beyond a Hail Mary, but at least the Republican had to campaign and not just fully coast.
Not really a pickup opportunity unless a massive wave is forming, but it’s another open seat, and those cost the Republican machine extra money, I’d think.

@Raoul: I’d imagine so, since if nothing else, there’ll presumably be a contested primary and that costs money.

McCready is the perfect candidate for this district which a Dem should have no prayer of winning. He should have won in 2018 but… . This election may do more to measure the intensity of the electorate and I hope the Dems are ready to crawl over broken glass and radioactive waste to vote. If that’s the case, one chamber of the General Assembly may flip and we might have some sane governing here for the first time in a long time.

Why is there no Paypal option to donate on the ActBlue page? I always use that option cuz I’m to lazy to get up and get my credit card.

Fellow jackal Tata and I have been writing Dem GOTV postcards for the NC special elections (NC-09 for Doug McCready and NC-03 for Allen Thomas) – along with many, many other people. It’s pleasant to think that our work may have been helping in NC-09!

This is good news! Been giving small bits to McCready for a while. This can happen. And the idea of the GOPers shitting their pants when it does will make it all the more sweet.

@Renie: I’d prefer PayPal as well. I have one card I use on the Internet. I memorized the number. Every 4-5 years, I have to insert a new expiration date and security code into my memory, but it works!

So now I’m told I COULD use PayPal? I’ll have to hunt around for that. It’s a ton more convenient.

What’s odd is I couldn’t use Paypal on ActBlue for McCready today but I was able to use it when I donated on ActBlue to Warren today.

    @dnfree:
Thank you kindly! I’ve been doing a few here and there, and enjoying it a lot. Their website is very informative: PostcardsToVoters.org

Unlike some of the samples posted on their website, my cards are super boring and not artistic (unless you count the occasional decoration with white-out, to fix my mistakes). Fortunately, “boring and un-artistic” is explicitly mentioned as being OK.

Good night, and happy Labor Day Weekend to all….

    Thank you! from North Carolina.

Another purple state that is gerrymandered and voter-suppressed to make it seem red …

Don’t forget there is another race too — we’re also voting now in NC-3 to replace the seat vacated when Walter B. Jones Jr. (R) died. Allen Thomas is the D candidate.

You are welcome. I have been a fan of hers since I saw her cover of Heart Shaped Box where she ad-lib loops about thirteen tracks. Amazing, really.

Another Radiohead cover: Fake Plastic Trees.

She has many Youtube videos, including original songs.
