Balloon Juice

Come for the politics, stay for the snark.

Thanks to your bullshit, we are now under siege.

We do not need to pander to people who do not like what we stand for.

“Jesus paying for the sins of everyone is an insult to those who paid for their own sins.”

There is no compromise when it comes to body autonomy. You either have it or you do not.

Republicans want to make it harder to vote and easier for them to cheat.

Fucking consultants! (of the political variety)

Conservatism: there are people the law protects but does not bind and others who the law binds but does not protect.

Trump’s cabinet: like a magic 8 ball that only gives wrong answers.

A norm that restrains only one side really is not a norm – it is a trap.

Fuck these fucking interesting times.

We need to vote them all out and restore sane Democratic government.

Shut up, hissy kitty!

Dear legacy media: you are not here to influence outcomes and policies you find desirable.

If senate republicans had any shame, they’d die of it.

Prediction: the gop will rethink its strategy of boycotting future committees.

American history and black history cannot be separated.

Republicans are the party of chaos and catastrophe.

The poor and middle-class pay taxes, the rich pay accountants, the wealthy pay politicians.

Authoritarian republicans are opposed to freedom for the rest of us.

There are more Russians standing up to Putin than Republicans.

Shallow, uninformed, and lacking identity

The lights are all blinking red.

I like political parties that aren’t owned by foreign adversaries.

Radicalized white males who support Trump are pitching a tent in the abyss.

GOP Stupidity Open Thread: Countdown to Trump’s Tulsa Rally

From local news station KOCO-5:

The Oklahoma Supreme Court today heard arguments on whether to step in and delay Saturday’s rally in Tulsa for President Donald Trump that is expected to draw tens of thousands of people.

Attorneys Clark Brewster and Paul DeMuro filed a lawsuit arguing that holding the rally as scheduled would endanger public health.

“A perfect storm for over-the-top disease transmission,” DeMuro said.

He said COVID-19 cases in Tulsa and across the state have dramatically increased since June 1.

“This is not a question of whether additional people will be affected and dying in Tulsa, it’s just a question of how many,” he said…

Attorneys for the BOK Center and its management company agreed that the rally ill-advised but said the contract they have with the Trump campaign leaves them no wiggle room.

“We don’t argue that the CDC classifies events like this as the highest possible risk,” one of the arena’s attorneys said.

But, he said, the campaign and arena have the legal right to hold the rally…

The court will meet tomorrow to discuss the request.

The Big Name Media actors are already cranky:

there is currently a mutiny on my flight to tulsa (via dallas) because a guy is refusing to wear a mask and the flight can't take off

It was postponed to Saturday out of “respect for Juneteeth”, which many are taking to mean “no one was signing up for Friday”.

“Supporters of President Donald Trump amassed outside the arena in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Thursday, two days before he is scheduled to hold a campaign rally expected to draw at least 100,000 people.”

I may be wrong but if I were betting….I’d take the under on the 100,000 attendance figure.

Two bits, four bits, six bits – hey, where’d the bits go? (WaPo link)

Here’s a new crisis the coronavirus pandemic is responsible for: a nationwide shortage of quarters, dimes, nickels and pennies.

The economic shutdowns to stem the spread of the novel coronavirus, spurring the deepest recession in decades, have had the unintended consequence of halting the flow of coins through households, businesses and banks, the head of the Federal Reserve confirmed Wednesday.

As the economy ground to a halt earlier this year, “the flow of coins through the economy has gotten all — it’s kind of stopped,” Fed Chair Jerome H. Powell said in a Wednesday hearing before the House Financial Services Committee.… Source

@Martin: I still can’t believe he said this.

The postscript where he says his aides all had no idea what Juneteenth was is equally bad, and it’s topped when trump stops the interview to ask his aide if she’d ever heard of it. And she says “Yes, and we issue a proclamation for it every year.”

I think she might be fired tomorrow, if Trump understands that she dunked on him.

Your good thoughts for Tamar are much appreciated. She’s a sweetie and a beautiful girl and I didn’t even know grapes were bad for dogs! I never would have left them out if I’d known. Mario Johnson is a black minister in North Tulsa, the historically black area of the city. He founded Black Lives Matter Tulsa, supported by his friend Terrance Crutcher. (That was the man murdered by the white female cop when she found him by his stalled car. ‘In fear for her life’, she was found not guilty.)

There’s an extensive article on Johnson in The Oklahoma Eagle, a black newspaper in Tulsa , an article that can be found through Google. The article also contains much infoabout the difficulties faced by blacks in Tulsa.

The Oklahoma Eagle was founded in 1936 by a man who bought the name and property of the Oklahoma Star. That had been the newspaper in Greenwood, the Black Wall Street. It was bombed and burned down during the Tulsa Race Massacre.

    @Red Cedar: It’s scary.

Years ago our Sophie grabbed a loaf of raisin bread off the counter and ate half of it before we came home from work.  She spent 3 nights with IV fluids at the emergency vet as a precaution, but seemed none the worse for wear.  The vet said that raisins and grapes don’t seem to affect some dogs while they are very hard on others (and they don’t know in advance which ones will have issues).

    Fingers crossed for your pup.

    Hang in there.

    Cheers,
    Scott.

In the least surprising news of the day, the mayor of a rural Oregon town was identified as the asshole who drove his car into a group of protestors.

So on June 1st someone drove into a crowd of protesters in Phoenix, Oregon. On Monday, multiple people came before the city council saying the man who did that was the MAYOR. Here’s one account

Bynum, the mayor, has done a pretty good job trying to get people to observe basic care in dealing with the virus.

But IMO he is in a bad position. His family is part of te city’s power structure, tied t om yhe city and state GOP. His grandfather LaFortune and his uncle LaFortune were both mayors of Tulsa. An ancestor  Bynum was mayor of the city before Oklahoma became a state in 1907. Bynum himself w OK rked as an intern for Inhofe, I believe, who himself was at one time mayor of Tulsa.

@scottinnj: The venue holds 19,000. I’m guessing it’s basically a hockey arena with 2 levels. About 5-10,000 will show up, they’ll close the upper tier and crowd everybody down to one end to make it look full. Screw social distancing.

    FYI.

Watchmen premiered nine months before the recent mass protests against systemic racism and police brutality happened around the world, but the show feels more timely than ever. Now, HBO is making the entire nine-episode series available to anyone to watch for free this weekend.

…The series starts in Tulsa 1921, demonstrating the events of the Tulsa massacre in which a mob of white Americans attacked black residents and businesses in Tulsa’s Greenwood District.
    [snip]
Notably, HBO is making the series free beginning on June 19th, otherwise known as Juneteenth, a day that many people and some companies celebrate and honor as the day slavery ended in the US. Watchmen will be free from June 19th through June 21st on HBO.com. Source

They are incredibly smart and motivated when they want to do something, which is great   That “something” is frequently something that they absolutely should not do, like eating a bowl of grapes or climbing down onto a dirt cliff above a raging river (one of oh so many heart stopping experiences I’ve had with mine) or eating cat shit until they vomit.

So, my hopes are with you, and my sympathies, because these dogs are heartbreakers and frustrating as hell, and oh so lovable, personality for days, and I frankly doubt I could ever own another breed again.
