Malaysia’s daily numbers. Two new cases. One from local infection, a Malaysian hospital patient screened ahead of referral to another hospital; one case of imported infection, a Malaysian returning from Egypt. Cumulative total 8,639 cases.
20 more patients recovered and were discharged, total 8,354 recovered or 96.7% of the cumulative total. That leaves 164 active and contagious cases, all in hospital for isolation/treatment. Four of these patients are in ICU, one is on a ventilator.
No new deaths; it has been 16 days since a Covid-19 related fatality was last reported here. We’re still on 121 deaths. Infection fatality rate is 1.40%, case fatality rate is 1.43%.

The Florida guy in that video looks too young and not creepy enough to be the Ron Jeremy.

@Amir Khalid: Having actually seen the Ron Jeremy*, that’s not him. Ol’ Ron has some pretty serious legal issues right now, he’s been charged with 3 counts of forcible rape.
*I was kind of surprised that he’s about my height(real short) and about my age, cause he looked about 10 years older than me and was using a cane.

One thing I’ve noticed from looking at the LA County statistics is the drop in the daily number of deaths, it’s about 1/2 to a 1/3 of what it was several weeks ago. I’m guessing that most of the increase in new cases are among the young(20 somethings). Though there is the several week lag between new cases and deaths.

@Amir Khalid: It’s mind boggling that the guy in the Florida video says “It’s not that bad here.” The concepts of exponential spread and delay between exposure and symptoms seem lost to him.
I was a kid when polio was spreading. It was terrifying because you couldn’t see it but people would disappear and you’d hear later they were paralyzed or in an iron lung. It wasn’t anywhere near as contagious as Covid-19 but it was as capricious. We felt helpless. When the bodies start piling up and the “long haul” becomes more common I suspect the fear will begin to creep in.

Yesterday, Beijing reported 7 new domestic confirmed and 1 new asymptomatic cases. All seven cases are vendors or workers at the Xinfadi exchange, and have been under centralized quarantine since 6/12 or 6/13. At this rate, we will probably see zero new cases by next week.
Shanghai added a new domestic confirmed case yesterday, connected to imported confirmed cases. Mother and daughter (both Indian nationals) arrived on a flight a week and half ago. The mother tested positive during the mandatory quarantine, and was diagnosed as a confirmed case. As she had to be sent to a hospital for medical quarantine and treatment, the father (already living in Shanghai), requested to enter quarantine to take care or the daughter. Both father and daughter tested positive on 6/28, and were diagnosed yesterday.
I still don’t know what prompted Xin’an County in Hebei Province to lock down. There are only 9 active confirmed and 3 active asymptomatic cases (from local transmission) in all of Hubei Province.

From the Australian Dept of Health:
‘As at 3pm on 30 June 2020, a total of 7,834 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Australia, including 104 deaths and 7,037 have been reported as recovered from COVID-19.
71 new cases today, 4 duplicates removed. 64 cases in Victoria, with the remaining 7 cases in quarantine in two states. The AFP story above tells the story of the lockdowns in suburban Melbourne. Some of the other states announced that their planned border openings will not now include Victorian residents. This has thrown the Australian Football League schedule into some confusion.

@?BillinGlendaleCA: I’ve been wondering that in general. The deaths just aren’t coming in the way that was keeping me up at night.
I have a ton of theories about that but I think the two most likely is that it’s much younger people being infected and/or that we have better techniques discovered during the lockout which is helping.
YY_Sima Qian
How do we even know if the current infected demographic in the US actually skews younger, compared to the wave that hit the Northeast from Mar. to May? Back then, testing was so limited that it was only targeted at those being hospitalized, which would skew toward the older end of the spectrum. All across the States, those with mild to moderate symptoms were told to self-isolate at home, mostly without testing, and that population would skew young. The asymptomatic cases were not being detected, either, and I would assume those skew young, as well. The worst hit places are prisons, slaughter houses, farm worker housing, I assume those skew young to early middle aged, too? I can only hope the nursing home population is better protected now, or if herd immunity has already been reached there.

It is two weeks (16th June 2020) since New Zealand started getting more COVID-19 cases. Until then we had gone 24 days without any new cases.

0 cases in ICU
22 Total Dead (34 days since last death)
Total Cases: 1,178 confirmed
350 probable
Combined: 1,528

The Guardian‘s football section reports that with lockdown reimposed in the city of Leicester, English Premier League club Leicester City may see its remaining home fixtures moved to another venue. Lester are third, eight points behind Manchester City, and in contention for a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
Sloane Ranger
For the first time since lockdown began death rates in the UK have returned to normal and lockdown measures are gradually being eased. I have a hair appointment in July. Must wear face mask and wait outside until invited in.
However, restrictions have been put in place in parts of Leicester where there’s been a spike in cases. This is causing confusion as people try to get their heads round it. Can you travel through the lockdown area on your way to or from work, for instance? What if you live just inside the lockdown area but your nearest shops are just outside it?
As usual, our government is useless when it comes to details.
zzyzx
@YY_Sima Qian: maybe not but there at least is some evidence for it. I wrote this (just for my friends) back on June 21 when I first started to notice that the deaths were doing something weird. It’s been 9 days since and it’s still doing that. Here are all of the theories I was able to think of:
zzyzx
@zzyzx: I have some friends who are health care workers who got on the better techniques idea a little bit but is that enough to explain everything?

@Sloane Ranger:
What has become of the contact tracing system since BoJo’s people made a total pig’s breakfast of it?
Sloane Ranger
@Amir Khalid: It’s been thrown out. They’re now looking at off the shelf versions companies have already developed for other countries. By the time they actual settle on something, the pandemic will probably be over.
In the meantime we’re back to the old fashioned physical track and trace by public health officials. Which is a joke. Local Government cuts have meant most Councils have reduced their Health Departments to 1 person and the office cat. After all we’re a 1st world country, we don’t get contagious diseases anymore!
Anyway, BoJo has moved on. He’s now pushing his “Rooseveltian New Deal” of infrastructure spending to counter the forthcoming Depression. The fact that the amount of spending he’s proposing is minuscule compared to what Roosevelt actually spent doesn’t enter into it.
