Partisan tensions are running high:
A Wichita man has been arrested on suspicion of threatening to kidnap and kill Wichita Mayor Brandon Whipple over frustrations with the city’s mask ordinance, the mayor and police said Friday afternoon.
Seems like a good time to raise some money for Democrats in Kansas. It’s a legitimate flip opportunity.
Kansas State Democratic Party
I looked over some fundraising figures for Senators by state and these are the two that need our help the most right now. In many of the races we’ve been giving to (SC, IA, KS, ME), the Democratic candidate has raised more money relative to the size of state than Beta did so they don’t need so much help from us.
Cal Cunningham, North Carolina Senate
Steve Bullock, Montana Senate
Gary Peters, Michigan Senate (incumbent)
You can see all the candidates we are supporting here.
MazeDancer
And Doug Jones up by 1!
You might want to add him.
RaflW
Another option for Kansas: Downballot candidates. When state legislative districts turn out more Dems and Dem-aligned voters, Bollier has more of a shot, and the whole enchilada is to prevent the KS Lege from having a supermajority that could force redistricting.

Good old Glenn.
Goku (Amerikan Baka)
I have an ActBlue account but I made the mistake of putting in my real email address. Can I make another account with a dummy email?
CCL
@MazeDancer: Yay, good news about Doug Jones. Time for me to make another donation.
Repeating MazeDancer’s suggestion, can we add him to this post?
Keith P.
@MazeDancer: You’re kidding me, right? I was just in Alabama a few weeks ago, and there were a ton of commercials for both Jones and Tuberville. I haven’t been paying much attention, since I have just assumed Tuberville would steamroll Jones solely on party affiliation
JPL
@Goku (Amerikan Baka): yup
Uncle Cosmo
(From memory, 50+ years on – one of my college classmates had the Glen Campbell album & I had no tape recorder, so it was memorize or else.)
Jimmy Webb (not the former Senator from VA) wrote some nice songs – this was his first hit . Also at least one howler (“MacArthur Park”) – but I’d give him a mulligan on that one; you never know what’s enough until you know what’s too much.
evap
@MazeDancer: Really? Great news! I will donate right now.
MazeDancer
@Keith P.: The candidate, himself, tweeted it
Those ads he has been running against Coach Quitter have to have had some impact.

@MazeDancer:
Doug Jones, Alabama Senate (incumbent)
LuciaMia
Its a fucking piece of cloth. What the hell is the MATTER with people?
dmsilev
@LuciaMia: FREEDUMB!
Felanius Kootea
@Uncle Cosmo: Cassandra Wilson’s cover gives me goosebumps because of her voice.

@MazeDancer:
Yup.
We need to fight for every seat – especially for good people like Doug Jones.
Cheers,

@Uncle Cosmo:
Right, it’s “searching,” not “looking.”
SiubhanDuinne
I am pretty well tapped out at this point — as it is, I’ve set back my move-west-to-be-near-my-siblings fund by at least a year — but I think I’ll drop what little coin there remains in the coffers of Southern Dems running for Senate: Mike Espy (MS), Doug Jones (AL), Jon Ossoff (GA), Raphael Warnock (GA Special), Jaime Harrison (SC), and Cal Cunningham (NC).
It’s not a particularly strategic approach, but it satisfies me.
dmsilev
Sent in some more money. This is getting expensive. Worth it, though. Definitely worth it.
Bluegirlfromwyo
I’m about tapped out but donated to every fund. We need to win this thing by a couple of touchdowns. Thanks to everyone doing what they can!
HinTN
@WaterGirl: I hit that button, where’s my pellet?
ETA: Doug is the real deal. I hope he mops the floor with that shitstain Tuberville.
Kathleen
@Uncle Cosmo: Wichita Lineman is one of my all time favorites. The song and Glenn Campbell’s rendition make it a masterpiece.
Kathleen
@SiubhanDuinne: I hear you. I donate tiny sums to lots of worthy candidates. When I feel badly I think that if everyone kicked in $3 to $5 a candidate could raise a ton of money. I do the best I can.
PsiFighter37
@Another Scott: If Doug Jones pulls out another win, we have won nationwide by a landslide.
debbie
@LuciaMia:
Honestly, only Trump can stop this bullshit. Of course, he won’t. Because they like him. They really, really like him.
Another Scott
@PsiFighter37: I’ll take it. I’m not greedy.
McGrath won the endorsement of one of KY’s largest newspapers and has outraised Moscow Mitch by $10-ishM.
I want Cotton’s seat too, but I’m not greedy. Not too much…
Cheers,

@MazeDancer:
will do
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
@Uncle Cosmo: I know this is late, but this song is one of my favorites. This jazz cover by Birmingham native Eric Essix is amazing to me.
Ben Cisco (onboard the Defiant)
Also, a heartfelt thank you for supporting Doug Jones. We have a real shot at this, and appreciate the people who didn’t just throw their hands up and say, “Alabama, amirite?”
THANK YOU!
Tom Levenson
Just hit the thermometers for all four. Small amounts, as my wife and I are both fear donating several times a week.

@MazeDancer: And here I thought you were talking about the poster of this thread….
Sen. Jones gunna win re-electy in Rich Man’s Missisppy?

@Goku (Amerikan Baka):
I’ve been contributing to ActBlue with my real email account for a decade or more. If you get emails you don’t want, there’s an unsubscribe link at the bottom.
Use it. It will work.
You can also set those emails to Spam if you want, but the unsubscribe option works better. It really will work. This isn’t Ronco advertising a pocket fisherman tool.
ETA: Don’t you want to receive a receipt from ActBlue? How will you know how much you have contributed without the receipt emails? Do you keep receipts to balance your credit cards? You don’t??!!!
WaterGirl
@HinTN: Thank you may be the best I can do! But I did put a piece of kibble in the mail for you as a thank you, but you know with the post office these days, it may never make it to you.
Punchy
@PsiFighter37: I think ’18 showed just how freaked out the country was. Then C19 hit, Agent Orange became useless and toxic, and now people are just flat-pissed. Early voting lines in surburban KS literally out the door. That speaks to the Dems and turnout. Gunna be a blowout win for the Dems, followed by mass violence by the righties….
Steeplejack
Worth posting Glen Campbell’s original—live lyrics over taped instrumentation on the Smothers Brothers’ show. Campbell was a gifted session musician—a member of the Wrecking Crew, in fact—and did the “guitar” solo on bass guitar on the original recording. Faked it note for note in this video.
Steeplejack
@Steeplejack:
Wikipedia says “baritone guitar.” Bqhatevwr.
frosty
@Steeplejack: Yep, looks like a baritone guitar to me. Nice instrument, a bit more growly than a guitar.

Kansas City hospitals are so full of covid patients they are turning away ambulances while man in Wichita wants to kill the mayor because of mask mandate.

@Uncle Cosmo: That song has been my earworm today since the moment I saw DougJ’s headline. No complaints, it’s a great song, although I wish DougJ had used “searching” instead of “looking”, it was a better word choice. It wasn’t Webb’s first hit, though; I think that was “By the Time I Get to Phoenix”. He has said that all of his early hits including “MacArthur Park” and “Wichita Lineman” were inspired by a disastrous first love affair.
Another Scott
TheHill:
Run up the score!!
Cheers,
Scott.
Uncle Cosmo
It wasn’t “a better word choice” – it was Webb’s lyric. (Which FTR is better in part because it alliterates with “sun”.) DougJ simply misremembered the words & couldn’t be arsed to take 45 seconds to check them. I guess when your job is shilling for cash everything else gets cast by the wayside.
Upon further review, I believe you are correct about “Phoenix” being Webb’s first hit; it wasn’t a song that made much of an impression on me at the time, so I didn’t think of it.
Ian
I still don’t understand why Peters is in such a terrible spot. He is polling 3-5 points behind Biden, he has raised more money than the average senator in this cycle, and is now begging for money after making a 20 million dollar ad buy.
I get he is more the quite type and doesn’t ride the corporate pac circle, I can even admire that about him, but if this were a Republican congressional campaign we would be laughing about the incompetence and probable grift that led to this position. Peters has no reason to be where he is, and I wish I knew why.
Steeplejack (phone)
@Ian:
Someone wrote here a few days ago that Peters’s track record is that he always seems to be in trouble but then squeaks through in the end. I have no idea if that is true. It’s nerve-wracking, especially this year.
MaryRC
@Uncle Cosmo: Uh … OK. I meant that it was Webb’s better word choice. I didn’t actually think DougJ had written the lyrics.
Brian
@frosty: the terminology has changed since that record came out. In the ’60s “bass guitar” meant a 30″ scale six string instrument tuned like a standard guitar an octave down, its lowest note the same pitch as a “Fender bass” (34″ scale) but with a much lighter timbre because of light gauge strings. The most common ones were the Danelectro and the Fender Bass VI, and were never intended to perform the actual bass function provided by (at the time) the upright bass, but to be played by a guitarist with a pick in unison with the upright to give more definition to the note; “tic tac bass” was the usual term. Guitar players, though, also saw the potential of it as a solo instrument; I think “Don’t Worry About Me” by Marty Robbins was the first such use of it. Because “bass guitar” has replaced “Fender bass” as one term for the standard instrument, “baritone guitar” became a catch-all for any low tuned six string guitar type instrument.
