As soon as I was notified via Governor Cuomo’s office, I got the NY COVID app. Several people I told about it, like my baristas or checkout people I’ve known for a while, also have it. It is reassuring, and you don’t even need service: it’s all Bluetooth.

It’s bad here in the OC – 2,025 new cases today. The new stay at home order started at midnight, and since restaurants aren’t going to be allowed to have outdoor dining for at least three weeks the teen’s dishwashing job has gone bye-bye. His stepdad is still quarantined in the garage. His mom is worried about finding toilet paper. Same old, same old.

Yesterday, China reported 3 new domestic confirmed, reported by Manzhouli in Inner Mongolia “Autonomous” Region, all are traced F1 or F2 close contacts already under quarantine. 1 confirmed case has recovered. Currently, there are 30 confirmed, 1 asymptomatic and 1 suspect cases at the city.
This morning, Chengdu in Sichuan Province reported a new domestic confirmed case, an elderly women suffering from coughing and visited hospital on 12/6. Chest CT scan shows scattered ground glass opacity in the lungs, but no fever. She has been clinically diagnosed as a moderate case. Per the by now standard procedure in China, the residential compound where the case resides is in lock down, with all residents to be screened. The outpatient clinic of hospital she visited is temporarily closed, and the hospital is not accepting new visitors. Epidemiological investigation has started, traced F1 & F2 close contacts are under centralized quarantine.
Shanghai Municipal CDC has shared the epidemiological investigation into the source of the 6 positive cases reported from 11/20 – 11/23. Case #s 1 – 3 work at FedEx at the Shanghai Pudong International Airport, with Case #1 coming in contact w/ freighter flight crews arriving from overseas (the US is implied) within 14 days of symptom onset, as well as entering the cabin area. Case #4 is a UPS employee at the airport, and come in contact w/ freighter flight crews arriving from overseas (the US is implied) within 14 days of symptom onset, as well as entering the cabin area. Case #5 is the spouse of Case #1, & Case # 6 is the spouse of Case #4. All 6 cases have SARS-CoV-2, L genotype, European family, sub-branch II.1, highly identical to each other. Therefore, it is believed that Cases #1 & 4 were infected by either the flight crews or the cabin environment of the freighter flights from the US. The remaining cases were infected by the 2 index cases. All viral genetic sequences of the 6 cases are of a different sub-branch from the 2 positive cases reported by Shanghai Municipality and Rongcheng in Anhui Province (luggage handlers at the airport) on 11/9 – 11/10. These 2 clusters are considered to have been seeded by separate introductions.
Yesterday, China reported 12 new imported confirmed cases and 6 imported asymptomatic cases and 2 new imported suspect case:
Yesterday, Hong Kong reported 78 new cases, 7 imported and 71 local (29 of whom without clear sources of infection). There are 36 cases currently in critical condition.

Greetings from a cold United Kingdom where the temperature at 3pm is still -1. I’m later than usual in posting the UK update because I ended up having a long phone conversation with a friend whose brother is wishing himself on her over Christmas due to having been kicked out of his girlfriend’s. She isn’t sure whether to let him come or put her foot down and say no and the discussion just went going round and round.
Anyway, yesterday in the UK we had 17,272 new cases. This is up from 15,539 on Saturday. The R number is still showing 0.8 to 1.0 but the downwards trend has flattened and is showing early signs of increasing. Cases by home nation,
England – 14,294 (up @1600)
Northern Ireland – 419 (down 32)
Scotland – 643 (down @130)
Wales – 1916 (up @250).
Deaths – There were 231 deaths yesterday. 201 in England, 11 in Northern Ireland, 5 in Scotland and 14 in Wales.
WARNING – These are all weekend figures and will be depressed due to weekend reporting delays.
Testing – not updated at weekends.
Hospitalisations – On Thursday, 3 December there were 14556 people in hospital and 1274 were on ventilators on Friday, 4th. Trendlines still decreasing.
That’s all, folks.

@YY_Sima Qian: I do not understand what is going on with Charlie Baker. I can only guess that he’s looking at the state budget and the knowledge no help is coming from the federal government, and has decided that businesses will stay open despite the number of people that will suffer and die.

@bluefoot: That actually, and unfortunately, makes sense. And MA is far from the only state between a rock and a hard place.

@YY_Sima Qian: I can’t imagine a scenario where more sickness and death is sensible because political expedience.
Mass. like most states pays millions in corporate welfare, dig that out of the budget before choosing inaction that ends up costing citizens more sickness and deaths.
