@NotMax: It could be they are giving the vaccine to everyone who lives and works in the City, so take the 3500 number as the people vaccinated and then assume they were given a 2 dose vaccine. That takes us to 7000 vaccines administered.
Then assume that the Vatican opened up vaccinations to workers families (not everyone who works there is a priest or nun) and they could very easily have reached a total of 10,500 individual doses in people’s arms.
That’s the only explanation that seems to make sense, at least to me.
NotMax
@Sloane Ranger
Thing is that would be a vaccination rate of 100%, which while not inconceivable has a better than even chance of not being factual. That’s basically the source of my confusion.

Tuesday in the UK we had 7673 new cases. This is an increase of 38.8% in the rolling 7-day average. New cases by nation,
England – 6486 (down 161)
Northern Ireland – 115 (up 28)
Scotland – 974 (up 213)
Wales – 98 (down 149).
Deaths – There were 10 deaths within 28 days of a positive test yesterday. This is a decrease of 12.5% in the rolling 7-day average. 8 of the deaths were in England and 2 in Scotland.
Testing – On Monday, 14 June a total of 930,123 tests were conducted. This is an increase of 6.3% in the rolling 7-day average. The PCR testing capacity reported by labs on that date was 579,459.
Hospitalisations – There were 1136 people in hospital on Sunday, 13 June and 188 people on ventilators as at Monday, 14th. The rolling 7-day average for hospital admissions was up by 22.1% as at 9 June.
Vaccinations – As at 14 June, 41,831,056 people had received 1 shot of a vaccine and 30,209,707 had received both. In percentage terms this means that 79.4% of adults in the UK have received 1 shot of a vaccine and 57.4% were fully vaccinated.
General – It looks like the government is going to require that all workers in care homes be vaccinated or face being sacked, and is seriously looking at requiring the same of all NHS workers. Trade Unions are opposing this, wanting a campaign to persuade hold-outs to get vaccinated instead. Several people are also pointing out that there are already difficulties in recruiting people into these roles and if people refuse to get the vaccine this will lead to a crisis is those sectors. I have just been listening to a couple of non-vaccinated care workers on the radio and, I must say, they sound hysterical. It’s all about their rights, nothing about their responsibilities and while one claimed to have researched the issue and said that she wasn’t one of those people who thought the vaccines contained a tracking device, she then went on to repeat every other anti-vaxxer point word for word! Let the lot go and pay more to get new people in to replace them!
Having said that, I know from speaking to a friend, that while all the staff at the care home where her mother is have been vaccinated, she is worried that the husband of it’s manager and a number of her adult children are not, so that’s also an issue.

@rikyrah:
In the Copa America football tournament in Brazil, over 50 people involved — players, team staff, workers — have tested positive. The summer Olympics is a far bigger event, involving tens of thousands of athletes — from all over the world, not just one continent. The potential for a big outbreak in Tokyo that spreads around the globe is real. A majority of Japanese people naturally wanted the Games cancelled, but the corrupt IOC and its corporate sponsors don’t seem to care.
mrmoshpotato
@Amir Khalid:
Yup. And, sadly, Japan can’t tell the IOC to piss up a rope.
Robert Sneddon
Scotland — 1,129 new cases of COVID-19 reported, one new death. Test positivity rate is 3.4%. Hospitalisations and ICU bed occupancy rates remain about the same as the last few days.
Over 44,000 vaccinations were reported overnight although this total might include some vaccinations missed out from yesterday’s reporting. They are split roughly 50-50 in terms of first and second doses. Scotland should reach 80% of the adult population having had their first vaccination in the next day or two. The 12-week maximum interval between shots is being reduced to 8 weeks, assuming supplies of vaccine continue to arrive on schedule.
Scottish elder care homes will not be required to ensure all staff are vaccinated, unlike plans for this requirement in England as mentioned by Sloane Ranger in a post above. The rationale from the Scottish government for not enforcing a vaccination requirement is that Scottish care home staffs are nearly all vaccinated already, with over 100% recorded as having had their first vaccination (there’s a large turnover of staff in care homes hence the overage figure). How well this works out going forward is another matter but generally in the UK vaccine hesitancy is not a big issue.
Matt McIrvin
@Cermet: Starting in April, New Hampshire explicitly opened up vaccination to out-of-staters–a logical thing to do since it’s a small state that gets a lot of non-resident visitors, including a lot of people from Massachusetts with vacation homes there. It was on the same day that Massachusetts opened up vaccination to all adults and a lot of places starting taking walk-ins soon after, so I’m not sure they got too many takers, but it was a fine idea
(Also, judging from how things have gone since then, out-of-staters might well be less vaccine-hesitant than New Hampshirites. NH is doing very well on vaccination by national standards but they’re the laggard in New England, and it’s not for lack of access.)

@Amir Khalid: OT, but has it been confirmed whether the Chinese Air Force flew 2 transports deep into the South China Sea in the direction of Malaysia, or 18 transports? Malaysian Air Force initially reported 18 transport aircraft, and Malaysian, international and even Chinese media ran with it. Since then, the number of aircraft in the formation seem to be under dispute, and Chinese media has been coy on the subject.
18 large transports would be a very large operation for the Chinese Air Forces (unprecedented, I think), and Malaysia would be a very odd target for such a demonstration, as Sino-Malaysian relations has generally been stable. 2 transports would be consistent with a training mission that doubles as a declaration of de facto Chinese control over the South China Sea, even to its southernmost reaches.
Matt McIrvin
@Ken: Probably. Mind you, compare it to, say, the sparsely populated red counties out West and it looks decidedly pro-vax. There are places in the country where the fraction with one shot is below 20%, and in NH it’s a majority even in the most wingnutty areas.
VOR
Perhaps comparing the number of COVID dead to the population of a city is a good way to visualize it. At 600k dead, that would be the 30th largest city in the US, bigger than Milwaukee or Baltimore. The next on the list is Louisville at 618k. 650K would move the COVID death toll ahead of Memphis. 700k would put it ahead of Boston, Detroit, Las Vegas, and Nashville. (Note, these are cities, not metro areas which include suburbs.
Edited to add: Could use states too. Wyoming is 577k population so we have more COVID dead than the entire population of Wyoming. Vermont is next on the list.
