Winnable House Races in Purple Districts (OH-13)

This post is in: Open Threads, Targeted Political Fundraising Fall 2022

FacebookTweetEmail

In our last post in this series, Balloon Juice peeps made the case for adding Emilia Sykes (OH-13) to our list.  She has been added!

About Emilia Sykes, from the comments yesterday:

Our candidate is is Emilia Sykes.  She is great with years of government experience in the statehouse. Their candidate is basically Marsha Blackburn with a law degree. Also with a beauty degree. Also on RWNJ talk radio. I think she had her own show.

I am in the new 13th, too! And Emilia’s opponent is totally unqualified.

Yes the most recent filing shows Emilia had $40,000 less than Gilbert but that was in June. I just got an email that said she was $13,000 short of her goal for the quarter. I know they always say that! But I contributed anyway! I am so excited there is a chance to be represented by a Democrat!

Always good to see yet another awesome Black female politician in the early stages of a great career.

Unless you customize the amounts, donations to this thermometer will be split 9 ways.

These 4 have reached over $4,700 each, so they are currently paused on the list.

*Marcy Kaptur  (OH-09)
*Sharice Davids  (KS-03)
*Gabe Vasquez  (NM-02)
*Elaine Luria  (VA-02)

Current Recipients

Susan Wild (PA-07)
Josh Riley  (NY-19)
Marie Gluesenkamp Perez  (WA-03)
Eric Sorenson  (IL-17)
Tony Vargas  (NE-02)
Yadira Caraveo  (CO-08)
Susie Lee  (NV-03)
Mercedes Krause  (NV-02)
Emilia Sykes  (OH-13)

 Winnable House Races Purple Districts

If you want to learn more about the folks on the list, click on the Targeted Political Fundraising Fall 2022 tag up top and check out some of the other posts in this series.

NOTE:  Mercedes Krause (NV-02) was added to the list yesterday, and we have a $1,000 match offer for her donations.  Mercedes is kind of the exception to our rule.  Her race is not a toss-up, but the folks at Four Directions think there is a chance that she may be able to pull it off.  Bret said that the Native voters are VERY EXCITED about Mercedes, as she is a great candidate and is Native herself – so even if she doesn’t win, they believe she will help bring out the native vote for Democratic candidates up and down the ballot.

Bret will personally match $1,000 of Balloon Juice donations to Mercedes.  I will watch the thermometer on the back end, and as soon as we hit $1,000 for Mercedes, he will add his $1,000 to the thermometer.

Here’s where we’re at right now:

Winnable House Races in Purple Districts (OH-13)

Reminder:  our next thermometer will be Election Protection in Key States, which will be a series like this one.  Only we’ll be rolling out key races that have a huge impact on election protections, like Secretary of State, Attorney General, Governor.

Reminder: all of the targeted fundraising thermometers for this fall (so far) are in the sidebar, and also at the link below.  I have a link to each one in the sidebar now.  The link doesn’t show the thermometer itself, but it takes you to it.  I thought it might be easier to remember what all the options are if they are listed.

Glad we’re also focusing on Nevada.  For a barely purple state, Nevada – rather remarkably – has three Democrats and one Republican in its Congressional delegation.  I’d hate to see what happened in Iowa happen to Nevada:  Three of four seats in Iowa were held by the Democrats coming into the 2020 election, but the fucking Republicans flipped two of them, including the District with Iowa City.

I’ve been donating to most of these candidates through ActBlue, and I really appreciate the guidance toward races where my paltry resources might make a difference. These outlays are a bit difficult with my current financial situation, but this is our lives we’re talking about. Carry on!

Is it not possible for act blue just to take my money and stop adding me to every candidates frigging email and text spam list? This is kind of pissing me off, getting begging emails every day and texts every day for candidates outside my state (AZ) that I still want to win (my home state of OH for example). Venting a bit but damn the thirstiness of elections.

But I get that it’s annoying.

I’m not sure that it’s ActBlue that does it, though.  I imagine candidates share their lists, with everyone trying to boost everyone else.

AZ Dems have a one seat majority in the state lege.

This asshole is gonna ruin it. Via @bobbybigwheel

SD-22 is a safely Democratic seat in Phoenix but the Democratic nominee suddenly, without telling anyone on the ground, quit the race so he could become a lobbyist for a utility company

Under Arizona law he remains on the ballot and any votes for him are null. Which means the parties need to run write-in campaigns for the seat. And Diaz could lose votes because lot of Democratic voters will end up voting for him unless they hear that they need to vote write in

The one thing all successful write in campaigns have in common is that they have a lot of resources to get the word out. So this is now the most important campaign in the country.

I’m not keeping up with the jackaltariat these days, so I’ve no idea if this has already been posted, but:

Eva Diaz, the current D candidate in Arizona state senate district 22 (a blue district) needs some money right away. This is a chance for small contributions to make a big difference.

    WaterGirl

The Arizona Senate is one of the most closely contested chambers in the country, and flipping just one seat would end unchecked rightwing control of it.

And that’s critical because nearly every GOP State Senate nominee in Arizona has indicated that they’re willing to throw the results of an election out if it’s not won by a Republican.

However, the abrupt departure of an incumbent means supporting the write-in campaign of Eva Diaz is the most impactful donation that you can make right now.

Senate District 22 is normally a safe seat but, shortly after winning the primary and without giving a heads up to anyone on the ground, nominee Diego Espinoza resigned from the legislature to become a lobbyist for a utility company.

Under Arizona law he [the Republican] is the only person left on the ballot and if we don’t get enough voters to write in Diaz then there’s a chance a Republican would end up representing this heavily Democratic seat in the next legislative session.

We’ve researched successful write-in campaigns in the past and the one thing they all have in common is that they had enough investment in order to get the candidate’s message out to voters.

Which means this is the donation that goes the furthest right now, more so than anywhere else in the country. Keeping the Arizona Senate out of the hands of people who would end democracy depends on it.

Very late to this thread – and very excited by the addition of Emilia Sykes to the list, and the matching-funds challenge for Mercedes Krause!

Thank you as always to WaterGirl, who’s doing great feats of organization and logistics behind the scenes.

It gives me great hope for the country when I stop and consider the variety of intelligent, skilled, determined candidates and incumbents on the Democratic side of the ledger… if we had time and money enough, we could probably find hundreds who deserve our support! Which is our good fortune, and the USA’s.

@H.E.Wolf: We have met the $1k challenge for Mercedes, and the match money has gone into the calendar.

So as we speak, Mercedes is at $2,068.09!

I really hadn’t thought of matching for these, but if anyone else is really invested in a particular person on the list, and they want to put up a match for their candidate, we can do that.

Two races which are important for election protection are the Secretary of State elections in Nevada and Arizona.  In Nevada, Cisco Aguilar is running against Jim Marchant, who said he would not have certified Biden’s win in Nevada if he had been Secretary of State in 2020.  In Arizona, Adrian Fontes is running against Mark Finchem, who as a member of the Arizona Senate tried to get the state legislature to replace the Biden electors chosen by the voters with Trump electors.

Also of interest:  the House race in Alaska is competitive this year; fivethirtyeight gives Democrat Mary Peltola (AK-1) a 49% chance.

  44. 44.

Mary Peltola (AK-1) probably belongs on this list.  I had forgotten that she had to run again, starting about 45 minutes after she won just recently.

@WaterGirl:”Do we have any sense of whether money helps? Do judges run ads?”

All 3 of them have ActBlue donation pages, which surprised me. It may be related to this:

The Ohio state legislature passed a law requiring party affiliation be listed for judges, after Jennifer Brunner (former OH Secretary of State) was elected to the Ohio Supreme Court in 2020.

If you’d like more information on the Three Judges, I can send you some details in email later today. If Balloon Juice will have its collective plate full with the fundraising campaigns already planned, no need to add these 3.
